5 out of 5 stars I Only Wish I Could Have Met Him.......2007-01-18

Like the title suggest, I wish I had met hime before his death in 2001. Even though this disc is of original, "poorer quality" recordings, you can still hear Mule's mastery of timbre and vibrato. You can also tell that Mule was originally a violinist from his use of vibrato. I had fellow musician listen to these recordings without telling him who it was and the instrument, and he immediately thought srings. I recently had the opportunity to met and play with Eugene Rousseau, a former student of Marcel Mule and a saxophone genius. I also have the honor of studying under a star pupil of Rousseau, Anna Marie Wytko. Rousseau discussed Mule and through these recordings and my meeting him, I understand why Marcel Mule is called "Le Patron".

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recordings of Vintage Music.......2005-01-05

This recording is fabulous. Marcel Mule's vibrato while considered outdated, is beautiful, his sound is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Technique, intonation and articulation are some of the best ever. His playing is light and accurate. His playing reflects a sound, that should be strived for, even when playing contemporary music. When he plays fast passages, it is still musical. The recording does not leave an empty feeling of, "WOW, he played and tongued really fast!" But one of awe at his ability to control and manipulate the saxophone is to doing whatever he wants. Since all of these Mule recordings are dated between 1930 adn 1940, they were recorded on LPs, and the background noise that is heard the noise that would be heard if listenting to an original LP, it most likely hasn't been taken out to preserve the original quality of the recording to prevent the loss of certain pitches and overtones that are contained in the recording.
This Marcel Mule CD is one that should be owned by all saxophonists.

5 out of 5 stars THE essential saxophone recording........2003-07-31

I can now truly understand why Marcel Mule is considered "Le Patron" after hearing this album. On every single piece, he performs with impecible musicality: tight articulations, great breath control, nice understanding of volume, and tone and vibrato that a great violinist would kill for. Another interesting aspect is the excerpt from Francois Combelle, showing a history of how the instrument used to be played as if it were a clarinet.

Every single saxophonist should own this album, for it is a perfect example of how the saxophone is supposed to be played.

4 out of 5 stars A Foundational Recording for MOdern Saxaphone.......2003-01-27

Marcel Mule was one of the founding fathers of the "classical saxaphone." Becasue of it's youth, the saxaphone is many times disregarded as a legitimate instrument. If nothing else, Mule has gone beyond the call of duty in this wonderful cd to prove any and all of those accusations wrong.
Mule has conquered some exraordinary compositions on this recording. He has taken such a youthful instrument and has given age which in turn, encompasses the soul and feeling that classical music presents in almost any setting. For an insturment that was so scientifically crafted, Mule has given the saxaphone life and colors. His intonation is almost infallable. He has a dark, deep and rich sound that resonates on every longer tone. And his vibrato just sings as any stringed instrument would do.
While the recording is a little fuzzy, which is probably due to it's date of recording, and, or that the recording was done from a distance, and in a hall, the purchase is well worth it. To be able to hear one of the leading forerunners in this still somewhat sub-cultural group of performers is a wonderful experience. So much can be learned from this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Energizing, top-notch music.......2005-09-26

I can't believe I waited to buy this CVD cd so long. What the CVDs did for "White Room" is genius. It will always be my favorite version of the old classic, and it bears little resemblence to the original (no offense Mr. Clapton, but you've been outdone). This cd is pure enjoyment, my other 2 best picks were the last 2 cuts "Joanne" and "Lighthouse". I've listened to this cd about a dozen times in 2 weeks. These guys are incredible musicians and cross over way beyond bluegrass.

    5 out of 5 stars it's been too long.......2003-02-25

A few days ago I got my old turntable out of storage and had great time playing music I hadn't heard in well over a decade. One of the first albums i reached for was the cache valley drifters. I was a dj on a station in san luis obispo and we played these guys all the time. Today, on a whim i went to cdnow to do a search and I find this new album. although i haven't heard it yet, if it comes close to what i heard at the spindle and the various places i used to love to hang out and listen to the drifters, i'm sure i won't be disappointed. and if ya see walt, tell him doug says "hi."

    5 out of 5 stars A Soulful String Band.......2002-07-24

Bluegrass purists will be interested only if they want to broaden their horizons. But that's not a bad thing. After all, when Bill Munroe invented the style of country music now known as Blue Grass (after Bill Munroe and His Blue Grass Boys) he was trying to develop a technique and tone that was his own.
The Cache Valley Drifters' White room foregoes the often copied high lonesome sound of traditonal bluegrass for something more their own -- call it the warm mellow sound. Unlike much of blue grass music that you can hear, their playing never sounds rushed. The traditional influences are clearly there -- not just blue grass but "mountain music" laments, folk ballads, and an assortment of traditional and more modern elements.

But it all comes together in a pleasurable style that doesn't try to knock your socks off. But that's not to say that there is anything lacking in technique or talent. Listen to the mandolin on this CD -- calling this fellow proficient is like calling David Grisman adept.

I, too, remember listening to this band, or one of it's iterations over 20 years ago in Santa Barbara. Back then they were usually missing a banjo player but they had two guitarists, a flat picker and a finger-picker. What a combination! that band was hot hot hot!

On White Room, the band isn't trying to excite a night club audience that's knocking back pitchers of beer. It's a more studied and artful approach. The title track is a stark case in point. They have taken an old Jack Bruce tune from the days of the original hard rock trio "Cream" and put it to their own use. It's the first track on the album -- if you start out expecting pure bluegrass, this track will give you pause. But relax and give it a chance. Treat as an acquired taste. Open your mind and the CVDs will fill it with warm soulful sounds.

If you like string bands -- listen to this one.

    3 out of 5 stars Drifters.......2001-03-19

I, too, used to go to Cal Poly, SLO. The first time I saw these guys was at the Great American Melodrama, in Oceano, in the midst of a terrible Pacific rainstorm. They were singing Russian River.

Later I saw them many times at the old Spindle, by the mission. Great music.

I went to College in San Luis Obispo, California in the mid 70's and these guys were regulars in the college taverns and bars. I can remember many wonderful memories of listening to this great music in College, what a treat to find them available on CD

4 out of 5 stars Pretty much what you'd expect from Stereolab.......2005-09-13

If you're reading this, then you're already in the small Stereolab niche market, and I don't need to tell you who Stereolab is or what they sound like.

I will make this pure and simple. The two tracks on this CD single sound like Stereolab doing the French vocals thing, and if you already like them, this CD will not disappoint you. You'll get pretty much what you expect: two songs that sound like Stereolab. That said, I only have three more things to add.

First, Fontaine's vocals on the first track are quite nice. She definitely blends with the group well.

Second, the Amazon entry lacks a tracklisting (what's up with that?) so I'll give the track listing here:

      01. Calimero (Stereolab and Brigitte Fontaine).mp3
      02. Cache Cache (Monade).mp3

Third, while I love the ethereal quality of these two songs, they do sound similar. On the other hand, I'm sure someone who didn't appreciate Stereolab might make the accusation that ALL their songs sound similiar. But to this fan, they do take on a similar sound.

      4 out of 5 stars Very good.......1999-09-18

Brigitte's sultry voice contrasts wonderfully with the groove of the son

5 out of 5 stars MOUSE ON MARS MEETS STEREOLAB.......2003-03-12

Cache Couer Naif came about as a side project between Laetitia Sadier of stereolab and Jan and Andy of Mouse on Mars when Jan and Andy were producing a couple of tracks for stereolab's remarkable and essential 1997 'Dots & Loops' (Mary Hansen, who will be incredibly missed, does backing vocals on one track). Melding the laidback, oh-so-cool, french and english vocals of Laetitia with the bouncy blippy bloppy electronics of MoM, Cache Couer Naif comes across as a crisp cool breeze on a warm summer day.

'cache couer naif', the opening track, is a short and sweet opener, good but not the most memorable track on this four song EP.

'schnick-schnack' is a laidback six minute groove with crackling beats, steel drums and laetitia crooning in French in a peppy poppy sing-a-long manner. You may not know what she's saying (dans la television, c'est moi talk talk???) but you'll find yourself singing along anyway. This track also appears as a stripped down remixed "house" track, 'schnick-schnack meltmade', on the duos 1997 disc 'autoditacker'. My personal favorite.

'lazergum' has familar melodies, blips and blops from either 'disopthek' or some other track (I can't remember at the moment) from "nuin niggung". Think of that track with vocals and you essentially have this track.

'glim' is a simple instrumental track which also makes an appearance on the Japanese import CD of MoM's 'glam' soundtrack.

Overall this is a wondrefully fun albeit incredibly short EP which leaves you aching for more. I would love to see a full length disc of Laetitia and MoM. Worth picking up, however MoM's recent offering 'rost pocks', a collection of early EPs, contains all the above tracks with the exception of 'glim'.

4 out of 5 stars love the vinyl version.......2000-02-01

i'm a late newcomer to mouse on mars and have only recently purchased this ep. All the snob rock/quirky music fans out there would enjoy the French lesson. Because French is hip now, right? ;) I think this ep is a bonus to any late night drive home.

5 out of 5 stars Mouse on Mars get sentimental!.......1999-06-11

This is my favorite work by Mouse on Mars. There's enough 'blips' and 'bleeps' to keep your head on edge, hours after listening. It's some of the catchiest electronic stuff I've ever heard, and, by far, the warmest of all minimal music. Youth, take note, this is the album you want to remember your high-school sweet-heart by: it's the perfect soundtrack for nostalgia.

3 out of 5 stars Historical enthusiasts only.......2007-07-15

Obviously, This was recorded many years ago. The sound is barely passable.
I've read about her and supposedly she was da "BANG" way back when. I've never ben a great fan of these old recordings since they often times tell little of the actual greatness of these singers. Her biography was more fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Silver! Forever, Germaine!.......2006-09-24

Aha, I have found a soprano that had it all, everything: physical and vocal beauty, the softest and roundest pianissimi ever without being fake or narrow, a gigantic middle voice, power, passion! Germaine had enough of everything. Lubin is without question unbeatable. The timbre of her voice is interesting, but beautiful. She has enormous volume, yet the sound is very light, it moves fast, like mercury or quick silver. Her voice flows, but the metal in the sound, the depth of the sound, the height of the sound is just completely unique and utterly impressive.

The Siegfried aria "Ewig war" is so beautiful and delicate, with a high C that was plain too easy for any dramatic soprano to think about singing, but there it was. The trill? Perfection!!! I agree with Hitler that she probably was the best Isolde in the world. I don't think that there is or was anyone to touch La Lubin! Even the Faust aria is sublime. She was GREAT!

Her life was NOT easy and it is difficult to disassociate her musicality from the tragedy she was forced to live; imprisonment, the death of her son, a certain lack of acclaim from France, and a divine appreciation for platonic love "I fell in love with men spiritually, they fell in love with my body.", which she could not reciprocate. All that must have been dreadful to live with.

Ok, Madame Lubin -- no one ever surpassed you in my book! You remain a Goddess of Art and even old France had to eventually admit that. Brava!!!
