Not what I was expecting.......2007-06-04

I bought this CD several years ago even before it went on market in U.S., aftering finding out that she has a new CD coming out on her website. I was so excited that I ordered this CD from amazon.uk, paid twice the money too, as it was being released there several months before it was to go on sale in U.S.

However, after I listened to this CD, I was hugely dissapointed. While it has a great production value, orchestration, and showcases Vanessa-Mae's violin skills, I found most of the compositions to be nothing spectacular... and frankly, tedious... This failed introduction into Vanessa-Mae's work actually prevented me from trying out her other CDs for the past several years until now. For newcomers to Vanessa-Mae, I find her "The Violin Player" and "Best of Vanessa-Mae" to be immensly more superior CDs than this one.

I absolutely without thought purchase all of Vanessa Mae's CDs'. The best aspect of her genius is her creativity and passion - you hear it in every note! She is without a doubt a first-class violinist who shoves traditional boundaries aside and absolutely roars like a muse - unrivaled.

Vanessa Mae is an amazing violinist. Her notes literally dance and you can hear the spirit in the music. But I did not enjoy the music chosen on this CD. The tunes are not exciting.

Definitely liked it. She's always been a great violinist. the improvement is in the background composition. the score with music by Vangelis is awesome and the rest of the tracks are amazing.

Pretty nostalgia from the most beautiful girl you'll ever see.......2006-05-12

I have listened to this charming album around four times now and I found it very enjoyable and stylish. Arielle Dombasle has a very light and fragile voice, in another life, she'd be a soprano. Her music is a mix of Jazz standards, nostalgia and movie musical music from the thirties and forties.

Arielle Dombasle is one of the most beautiful looking women I've ever seen and I am sure she would be utterly compelling in performance in a nightclub.

Mademoiselle Dombasle's album is not great, but it is a very enjoyable and entertaining one.

Beautiful Modern Nostalgia........2005-06-23

This cd is not for everyone, but you will find it absolutely enjoyable if you are more than passively into the artistic world and if you are multicultural. Guilty on both counts, I love this album even more than I do Arielle's previous crossover opera outing, Liberta.

Here is Arielle, backed by a wonderful orchestra that sounds straight out of yesteryear as she sings old pop standards in Spanish and English, yet manages to make them all sound French! It's the stuff old hollywood musicals are made of, and the musicians play noticably lovely arrangements while never overpowering Arielle's soft and very effeminate French vibrato. The mood of this album is an unmistakably sensuous, romantic rondezvous for lovers as much as it is a beautiful European escape for the infinite dreamer who wishes to travel abroad.

The best songs on here are "Quien Sera (Sway)," which I have recently also heard by Rosemary Clooney in a more Cuban style, "Perfidia," the fun old wartime song "Rhum and Coca-Cola," which won't leave your brain for days once you hear it, "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (the version with Julio Iglesias)," but my absolute favorites have to be the gorgeous and heart-searing delivery she gives "I Wish You Love," which has to be one of the sweetest and most beautiful old pop standards I have ever heard, and the short, but sexy, and nostalgic "Whispering."

I must also commend Thomas Gizolme for the beautiful and nostalgic photography of this petite, yet grand on so many scales, talented beauty that so fits the atmosphere of this beautiful album. Lyrics are also included, and I love the fact that this time, she has sung a lot of them in espanol since I know some. If you love these wonderful old songs and want some decent versions of them, invest in Arielle's gorgeous Amor Amor. She does them, with a French attitude, the way they were meant to be performed.

I discovered this cd quite by chance and I'm really happy to have done so. Arielle has a very traditional (stereotypical) high pitched `vibrato', French voice, and sounds as though this was recorded in the 30's, because of the style of vocal.
This covers album, sung mainly in Spanish and often English in a French Style (confused?) is a beautiful, quaint and relaxing album, which often reminds me of the music from the fantastic French cartoon / film `Belleville Rendezvous'. Highlights include `Amor Amor', `Rhum and Coca-Cola' (and upbeat but relaxed Rhumba sung in English), `Pefidia', `I Wish You Love'and you should look out for the `Quizas, Quizas, Quizas' (Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps) at the end of the cd which is a duet with Julio Iglesias.
NB: for those who remember the series `Lace' in 1984, Arielle is the French actress!
And a special mention for the beautiful inner sleeve, filled with stunning and evocative pictures and lyrics.

Nowhere is the success of 'self-invention' more celebrated than in this elfin beauty. A nigh-on four decade life of divine indulgence that only the sublimely beautiful and rich can live suggests the wispy fabrics woven about Miss Nicks are mere hand-me-downs from Ms Dombasle.

"Who told her she could do a latin album??"...well.who told her..she...couldn't ..is more to the point.

Rather than an overpowering assault on the rhythms with a 12 piece Mariachi gaggle fresh from a 6 Margarita lunch, a sitting with this album is like being allowed to sit quietly in the corner, in the boudoir of a famous courtesan and listening to her gently hum and calmly sing while she dresses for a dinner somewhere in the Left Bank...and you hold your breath praying she won't notice you because you know you'll be tossed.

In order to enjoy the complete fantasy, don't fall prey to imposing Celine's vocal standards here.
