When a guitar is a poem.......2001-05-05

Atahualpa Yupanqui, the immortal father of Argentina's folk music, demonstrates in this CD how his music does not need lyrics to become a poem. This delicious CD gathers an amazing collection of Don Ata's best instrumental guitar pieces. I can't stop enjoying "Triste No. 5." If you are on the right mood you'll find yourself looking away, perhaps longing for those long gone childhood years. If his Argentine upbringing conforms the platform where Don Ata builds most of his themes, sometimes there are those Bachian undertones. Of course Bach's "Jesús Alegría del Hombre" demonstrates his admiration for JSB, but this admiration pervades even in "Estudio la gota de agua" or "Canción del Abuelo No. 2." You'll see why many of my Argentinian countrymen still think that Don Ata never died and never will. CD's like this, will prevent that from happening.

Beautiful selection, great musicianship.......1999-07-08

Steve Novacek's performances of the pieces on this CD are the best you'll find. He plays them with warmth and technical brilliance. The Romance Criollo is one of my favorite pieces by Jorge Morel - a real masterpiece of modern counterpoint.

Noguiera's "Choro Chorado" is another beautiful piece. I heard Steve play it as an encore in concert once - it was enthralling. I highly recommend this CD as one of the best recordings I've ever heard.
