5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-20

Son de Madera is the widely-recognized premier Jarocho group leading the recent resurgance of this music. They offer an intriguing proposal... they are leading researches in this music genre... and rescue the music, arrangements, styles that formed the roots before Mexican Film popularized it... and affected it. In addition, they recognize the deep African & Afro-Caribbean influences in the music...and chose to embrace them with great zeal... and they see themselves as part of a greater Afro-Mestizo musical reality... and as "Cosmopolitan Nationalists" are also influenced by other music they love such as Jazz & Venezuelan Joropo.

I see them live at Berkeley's Centro Cultural La Pena & even though the group was split (they left half the members in Mexico & were joined by two U.S. based apprentices)... the brilliance was still evident.

On that occassion, it seemed 1/2 of the attendes were less advanced Son Jarocho students from U.C. Berkeley... and according to their terminology... Alfredo Herrero "was all over" the Requinto Guitar... squeezing Chords & Notes out of every corner of the instrument... while smacking it to enchance the percussion section.

Ramon Gutierrez Hernandez playing of the Guitarra de Son... with the complex fanning was simply enchanting.

Their singing was right on & the lyrics were brilliantly allusive.

Unlike the numerous smooth jazz and neo-flamenco compilations (from Narada and other labels) littering the marketplace, Viva Flamenco! features numerous accomplished guitar players who remain far truer to the genre while often experimenting with outside sounds without watering down their music. Notable names here include Gerardo Nunez, Gino D'Auri, and El Viejin. Amidst some traditional numbers (many with vocal accompaniment), some artists here also offer fresh perspectives: Rafael Riqueni integrates romantic strings into the vivacious "Mi Tiempo," Miguel de la Bastide's speedy six-string fingerwork on the edited "El Cambio" (accompanied by flute) flows with a subtle jazz undertow, while Gino D'Auri's agile fretwork on "Barrio Santiago" is accompanied by sprightly tabla playing. Not all of the cuts here are outstanding, but Viva Flamenco! offers a respectable blend of tracks for the uninitiated, particularly since much of this compilation won't fit saccharine mainstream radio formats. --Bryan Reesman

Good Group Of Guitar Players. It would've been fantastic to add to the list the musical group NovaMenco.
In their new CD "FORTUNE TELLER'" NovaMenco is introducing more and more fans to this new style of flamenco.

5 out of 5 stars Los Mejores Gitanos.......2000-11-21

In the mood for some flamenco? Put this on and you'll know that besides the beautiful Espanola on the cover the CD has substance. This a compilation featuring 14 different artists playing nearly a hour! An excellent choice if you're in the mood for some authentic musica Espanola. Each artist is talented beyond words and just a joy to listen to. The frenzy, passion, colors of Jerez, families rooted in gipsy traditions, rhythmic, melodic, eclectic, improvisational, spontaneous and most importantly bound by tradition music is a wonderful representation of the state of the musical genre. The greats are here, featured artists include possibly the best , Paco de Lucia, Pepe Harbichuela and a host of others hailing from diverse locals and backgrounds. The booklet gives you biographical information on each artist and what CD the songs come from. A non stop tour de force this CD is awesome and shows the true character of Flamenco with only momentary side excursions into nuevo flamenco. The vocals and castanets are authentic . The challenge for the listener is to able to distinguish the styles of each player. That said I guess I'll get many listens out of this CD. Until that day when I go to Espana and sit with a bottle of Rioja at a sidewak cafe I'll listen intently. A learning experience taught by the masters I look forward to years of listening to this CD

Ramon Ayala has been the leading proponent of norteño music for almost 30 years, thanks to his exquisite song selection and studio wizardry. Whether melancholy theses on love's departure or life-affirming polka stomps, Ayala's songs are as comfortable as an old glove. Hundreds of bands have tried to imitate him, but few have been able to capture the crystal-clear fidelity he gets in the studio. Each of his albums vibrates with bass-line tension and harmonically rich accordion runs. Heads nod and feet tap even to dark tunes like "Mandame a la Tumba" and the bouncy "Bendita Pobreza," each of which packs dancing grooves funky enough to pull even casual rug cutters to the floor. --Ramiro Burr

THIS ALBUM IS ONE OF HIS BEST WORKS. IT TIES HIS CLASSIC SOUND WITH "CASAS DE MADERA" AND HIS NEW APPROACH WITH "SOLO UNA PATADA" THOUGH THE SECOND SONG IS THE ONE OF MOST LIKED BY MANY PEOPLE I TRULLY FEEL THAT THE SYNTHESIZER SHOULD BE LEFT TO THE TEJANO MUSICIANS. SO BECAUSE OF THIS I DO TAKE ONE STAR OFF. THOUGH I AM A LOYAL FAN THAT HAS MORE THEN 15 CD FROM THE UNITED STATES AND FROM MEXICO.

The North Carolina-based duo of Juan Benavides and Jaime Ibarra explore three main musical styles on their debut: traditional flamenco, rumba flamenca, and guitarra Latina; the duo also sprinkle some subtle pop influences into the latter two styles. Three of the 12 originals on Aire y Candela are traditional flamenco and are the most striking pieces. Two of their other songs--"Hierbabuena" and the catchy "Gato Gris"--skirt dangerously close to replicating ideas by one of their acknowledged influences, Latin guitar pioneers Strunz & Farah. And while De Madera are also informed by the guitar mastery of Paco De Lucía and the jovially rambunctious spirit of rumba flamenca, they often sound as if they're diluting those influences into some very even-keeled numbers. The solid musicianship is not in question here, rather the stylistic uniformity of many tracks. Overall, Aire y Candela is a mixed bag; however, the exuberant closing track, "Isabel," closes the album in classy fashion. --Bryan Reesman

3 out of 5 stars Excellent latin guitar duo-they can ACTUALLY play flamenco!.......2001-02-21

Being a flamenco guitarist myself, I am often dissapointed with guitar duos that play "latin guitar", but claim it to be flamenco, which is a very precise and profound music by itself. These guys however, have made an excellent CD in the vien of Strunz and Farah. Perhaps too many rumbas that sound similar for my taste, but prove that they know and play real flamenco with thier own style. Sure if you like Ottmar Liebert or Young&Rollins, you'll like this too, but if you're a fan of real flamenco guitar, you might be pleasantly surprized. Tremendous playing ability, real knowledge of flamenco, and a great sounding product is why I like the album.

I had the distinct pleasure of hearing De Madera at the Don Quijote Restaurant in Charlotte, NC one Saturday evening. While dining on the outside terrace we were serenaded by some of the best Latin/Flamenco music I have heard. Their musical skill and passion was just wonderful. The music took me on a journey that left me wanting to hear more. It is a blend of more than just Latin or Flamenco, but I am not sure just what it was. You have to hear it and feel it to know that this is good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging, exciting music.......2006-06-13

I confess that I had not heard of this composer, nor had I heard any of his music, until I acquired this CD. I am delighted to have it. Chuaqui's music is by turns intense, bright, rhythmically exciting, and lyrical. I am especially excited by the string quartet, Cuarteto Claroscuro, in which he finds surprising variations on relatively simple materials, but I also have really enjoyed the flute solo, "Ancient Wing," and the very lively "Hyperbole," a quintet for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. It is an excellent introduction to Chuaqui's soundworld. Indeed, all five pieces on this disk are engaging and worth repeated hearings. The technique offers the traditionalist a comfort zone while pleasing those who seek innovative strategies. The composer's own note disavows the term "exotic," and I would agree that there is no striving for exoticism, but the music nonetheless is fresh and not narrowly tied to any particular national or theoretical style. This is a welcome addition to my collection of contemporary music. [I was very interested to learn from the booklet that Chuaqui studied with an old friend of mine at Berkeley, Edwin Dugger, but I learned that only after I had listened to the music.]
