4 out of 5 stars A True New Wave Genius.......2007-06-19

"The Pleasure Principle" is the album that contains Gary Numan's biggest chart hit, "Cars". And "Cars" is the only commercial-radio-friendly song on the album. The other tracks, however, are works of pure genius, especially "M.E.", "Engineers", and the masterpiece "Tracks". "Tracks" might be the best two minute song I have ever heard.

Numan is only now being credited for his work practically inventing the entire New Wave movement, and this album certainly stands the test of time as one the classics of the genre. Order it without hesitation, slip on your headphones, and prepare for a real listening treat.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2007-04-24

Someone once asked me what my favorite album of all time is. That is of course a very difficult question to answer. But I'll have to choose Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle because it is the only album of which I've been in continuous possession of for the past 25 years; first as a cassette and then a CD. I can't say that of any other album and I've listened to hundreds. If you like this record then go get Replicas and Telekon. If you like those two then try out I, Assassin.

5 out of 5 stars We're so exposed..........2007-03-30

Numan's sole association for some is still his 1979 hit Cars. It's a shame, because the album it hails from is an excellent record and holds up remarkably well all these years later.

This is a notable rock achievement---a rock album with no guitars. The synthesizers (Minimoog and Polymoog) are put through some guitar pedals and create some big, fat, fuzzy sounds that are pitched, distorted, swished, whatever. The bass and drums are `real', and Numan continues the sci-fi-robot-future-Phillip K Dick-inspired rock. As on Replicas, the hooks seem effortless.

There are a number of Numan classis in addition to Cars, some of them still regularly performed live. Films, for instance, is a funky, menacing number. Metal is a live staple, covered and remixed numerous times and still working. Conversation is another rambling, robot-inspired number with a long synth breakdown at the end, similar to Cars. M.E. is another dark and menacing number, now well-known for the Basement Jaxx use of the sample riff.

Many folks now acknowledge this as an important, influential album, yet Numan remains cult (if at all in the US). The Pleasure Principle is cohesive, the sound has aged incredibly well, and it's ahead of it's time for 1979--not bad for a kid. The remastered and reissued Beggar's Banquet discs are all excellent. The b-sides (three of them) are atmospheric and completely in line with the mood of the album--kind of dark, mechanical, but effortlessly catchy. The live tracks (four) are of excellent quality and come from the Living Ornaments series of live albums (also highly recommended). With a `distant' sound, warm synths, and dark lyrics, Numan was in his own world.

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem.......2007-03-08

The Pleasure Principle, the 1979 New Wave outing from synthpop pioneer Gary Numan is a very enjoyable affair. This is almost-pure (Numan adds electric viola, bass, and acoustic drums to his huge Minimoog sound) cold and melodic synthpop that sounds both modern and dated.
Highlights include the songs "Metal", "Films", "ME", "Observer", and the perennial New Wave favorite "Cars". The sound is excellent and this reissue from the fine UK indie label Beggar's Banquet contains extensive liner notes and photos. Ah...that Minimoog sound!

5 out of 5 stars Another Album That Changed Pop Music........2007-02-19

There were many synth pioneers before Gary Numan: Brian Eno, Wendy Carlos, Pierre Boulez and John Cage among others.

Numan's contemporaries like Ultravox never had a hit in the same stratosphere as "Cars".

What makes The Pleasure Principle so crucial, so pivotal in Pop music was that through "Cars", Gary Numan was able to introduce the mainstream audience to synthesizers better than anyone before him. "Cars" brought them to The Pleasure Principle, and The Pleasure Principle introduced them to synthesizers.

David Bowie's Berlin trilogy of Heroes, Low and Lodger(which included Brian Eno playing on much of them) preceded Numan , but they were more ambient(Heroes and Low) and eclectic(Lodger). Hits like "Heroes" had prominent guitars.

The Pleasure Principle has zero guitars.
It does however have Viola.
And Billy Currie of Ultravox also played Violin on a couple of tracks.

No guitars, mostly synth, some violin and viola.

Does that sound like a hit record?

My favorite track is still "Airlane." It is a simple and beautiful piece that opens the album perfectly.

The single Cars was heavy in synths, (even used synth drums) and yet followed a more pop sensibility.

It's not going to have the complexity of a great Philip Glass work or a Brian Eno album.
And that's the point. The Pleasure Principle was an electronic record that showed a whole new audience how beautiful a synthesizer can sound.

A lot of Electronic bands owe a bit of appreciation to the legacy and influence this album left -including Evening Ocean.

The Pleasure Principle is a classic CD that is still amazing today.

Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Average Effort.......2007-06-24

It's unlikely that an album such as this is going to win over new fans - I'd guess most people buying it are fans from the past. So I'll address the three things those who are considering upgrading will care about:

1. Does it sound better?
2. Are the bonus tracks worthy?
3. Is the booklet any good?

Is the sound better? The quick answer is YES. However, it's a MARGINAL improvement only. It's much louder, so if you play your music with the stereo turned up to 5, then you might only need this disc on 3 (if that makes any sense). There is EVER SO SLIGHTLY more clarity, and the bass is tighter. However, probably only audiophiles will care. It is NOT a "night and day" difference. When you adjust volume levels so the old disc sounds the same loudness wise, the differences are very minor.

Are the bonus tracks worth it? Well there are four here. The first "In the Mood Live" is actually quite bad. Plant's vocal is out of tune on the harmonies, and the mix loses instruments every now and again, pushing the guitar to the back. The second "Thru with the Two Step Live" is pretty good though. It clocks in at 10 minutes, with an extended intro of more than 3 minutes. The mix has settled, and it's a good listen. The third is "Lively Up Yourself Live", a Bob Marley tune. This is a good song, and while Plant simply covers it (not major changes really) it's a fun tune, and it's done by musicians clearly having a good time. Finally, there's "Turnaround", an outtake from the original sessions. This is by far the best bonus track here. I wish they had put it FIRST among the bonus songs, so we could have enjoyed the sessions rather than have to wade through the live stuff first.

All in all, the bonus material is okay. The studio track is great, the live stuff is nice, but not essential.

Finally the booklet. They have taken the notes straight from the booklet of the box set from wence this came - they're not exhaustive, sadly. Still, tey beat the original release.

All in all then, this is a minor upgrade to a classic record. Those expecting something revilutionary sound wise will be disapointed if they do a close examination. The bonus tracks are't terrible though, and Plant is always great.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Plant Continues Where Zeppelin Might Have.......2007-05-06

With PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS, Robert Plant continues to move forward musically and lyrically. On this CD, Plant continues on the path to where Led Zeppelin might have gone had drummer John Bonham not died in an alcohol-related choking incident in 1980.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time..........2007-05-01

Great songs, production and playing; but in all honesty, a lot of what you're listening to is Foster, Waybill and Toto. Lukather and the Pocaro's were all over this thing - "Talk to ya later" being the highlight. But there's still a lot of energy and great vocal work from the Tubes themselves. Foster did for The Tubes what Todd Rundgren did for XTC - he produced their best album. Period.

5 out of 5 stars This Sort of Garbage BURNS ME UP!.......2007-03-11

This has GOT to be one of my favorite albums of all time. I have no earthly idea WHY whomever is putting this piece of junk CD out is rearranging the sequence. Like the "Chewbacca Defense", This does NOT make sense! The original song arrangement on the album just flowed from one song to the next, and after hearing it so many times and playing it in my head to get through nights on guard duty in the Army, seeing that a publisher has released the album in an altered order just makes me flipping sick.

I wore holes in two LP copies of this album, probably one of the greatest (and undersung) albums of the entire 80's decade. Receiving far less exposure than it deserved, this Tubes masterpiece produced by David Foster ranks right up there with Gary Numan's "Pleasure Principle" or DEVO's "Are We Not Men?" albums.

From "Talk to Ya Later" with Roger Steen's blistering lead guitar to "Sushi Girl" and the burning, moaning wail of "Mr Hate", through the grinding jagsaw rips of "Power Tools", this album grabs you by the inner ear and rips your brain out to leave it twitching in rhythm on the floor. Fee Waybill's warbling, yodeling vocals cry out in agony and angst again and again, and Bill Spooner's plaintive ballad singing in "Dont Want to Wait Anymore" just absolutely stand out, as do Rick Anderson's thump-and-pop bass and the twin keyboard stylings of Vince Welnick (God Rest His Soul, he passed away after joining The Grateful Dead) and Mike Cotten (who is currently working on a documentary, "The Tubes Project". Prairie Prince absolutely blows doors on his double-bass drum kit, and all in all, this incredible, badly underrated band is still out there, in a somewhat smaller version, still cranking away and just flooring audiences (and when in the HECK are you coming to Colorado, guys?).

Anyone who had a chance to see The Tubes on SCTV's "Fishing Shack" doing "Sushi Girl" and "Talk to Ya Later" saw what an absolutely serious but imminently humorous band can do with national exposure. I was working at Record Town when this album came out, and it was played religiously at least twice a day for many, many months.

The Tubes were one of the best bands EVER to record an album, and if you love this one, then you have got to also find a copy of "What Do You Want From Live" double live album that features the teenage anthem "White Punks on Dope", "La Vie en Fumer" and "Don't Touch Me There".

This album was The Tubes' "corporate rock" album, and they later reject the business suit/corporate image on their following album, "Inside/Outside" with another incredible tune, "Out of the Business".

Of all the overlooked talent in the 1980s, The Tubes are probably the most talented, and for those who only know The Tubes by their hit "She's a Beauty", don't just scratch the surface with this band. Far more listenable music than that hit can be found on their earlier albums such as their eponymous "The Tubes", "Young and Rich", and "Now".

I would give this album a 100% recommendation, and I could jsut not live without this treasure in my album collection. I also have a DVD of the Laserdisc they released of Completion Backward Principle (nyah nyah nyah)

"As I mentioned near the close of the last record, this record you are now playing is another example of The Completion Backward Principle; if you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting. WHAM!"

2 out of 5 stars puzzling remaster...........2006-06-22

I have to hand it to BGO (Beat Goes On Records) for salvaging worthy out of print records, but why do they continually botch up the process? This is a brilliant record, one of my favorite Tubes LPs (of the Capitol Years, that is...) and they have reshuffled the tracks, re-edited segues with pointless crossfading and the like. What gives? I have quite a few LPs on CD that BGO has faithfully put out, but very few are flawless.
I don't understand what is so hard about restoring a classic album. Just go out and find the original vinyl copy, A-B it with what you've done, add some nice picture scans and put the puppy out... Quality control is much needed here.
If you're in love with the original version, burn the vinyl copy to CD or find the original Capitol CD. Heck, they've botched it so bad you can't even correct the mistake by programming in the correct sequence!!! Unforgivable!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Please play both sides at one meeting.".......2006-03-11

The Tubes' first effort for Capitol Records is their breakthrough album and possibly their best one, too. Producer David Foster gave the music a slick, polished feel to it with pounding drums, clean-sounding guitar, and zany synth licks. "Talk to Ya Later" and the Top-40 hit "Don't Want to Wait Anymore" were the stand-out songs, but the rest of the record is awesome. "Sushi Girl", "A Matter of Pride", and "Power Tools" are great rockers, "Let's Make Some Noise" is a top-notch dance-rock tune, and "Think About Me" is an entertaining stab at new-wave. Though it may not be as zany and experimental as their first two albums, The Completion Backward Principle isn't any less entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Crafty.......2005-06-09

"This is it America. Say hello to a whole new way of listening."
The Tubes 1981 effort finds Fee and the boys mocking the Yuppie movement with their new look of conservative haircuts and suits with corporate portraits and a Reaganite corporate speech written on the back cover. Pure corn. The music, however, is some of the Tubes best. "Talk to ya Later" is streamlined and delivered with heavy production (a la David Foster) and one of the best rockers of the 80s, bar none. "Sushi Girl" is another pseudo dance number that pokes a bit of fun at the then growing trendy sushi-bar set (more yuppie stuff). But it doesn't end there "Mr. Hate" is another fine composition that gives a nod to working class struggles and frustrations. Side two offer the quick-paced "Think about Me" showing off the band's ability to shift gears and mock yet another style of trendy music. "A Matter of Pride" is pure Tubes crooning fare. A solid pop number expertly executed. "Don't want to wait anymore" is more Tubes crooning at its best. A lovely slow ballad never straying anywhere near into cliche territory. Production by David Foster is clean and dry with a nod to the bands heavier side. Prairie Prince finally gets a major sound to go with his incredible chops, and Michael Cotten's synths are, as always, tasteful and ever-present. One of the Tubes finest efforts.

3 out of 5 stars This album is fine!.......2007-02-26

Despite the negative comments certain people have left, I believe this album to be fine. It's very atmospheric and the vocals don't sound too much different. It's a first release, so obviously it isnt as good as some of their later albums but really it isnt that bad. And in response to that comment about the keyboards sounding like carnival music: They definitely do not. Far from carnival music actually. Guess that person doesnt know his sounds very well.

For all you Cradle of Filth haters, also:
Cradle of Filth is an amazing band. Not only do they not sound like pointless noise like a lot of other black metal bands, but their lyrics and vocals and instrumentals are all amazing. Who cares if they came to sound more commercial? It's their prerogative and personally I think they came to sound a lot better.

1 out of 5 stars Another band that I USED to like...........2007-02-24

..But now that I've been introduced to some much, much more evil metal (Morbid Angel, Slayer, Hellhammer, et cetera), I could care less about this band. In fact, only one of their albums I still listen to anymore these days ("Damnation and a Day") and even that album gets on my nerves. Dani Filth (pretty accurate name) has possibly one of the worst "evil" voices I've ever heard! The guitarists prevail in churning out some pretty cool stuff once in awhile but that's about it. There's no bass (well, there might be one, I just can't hear it), the keyboards are lame, the drummer feels like he can beat on anything he wants (which does NOT make music, I'm afraid. Nice try, though), and overall, this band just flatout doesn't do it for me anymore.

I know I'm probably wasting my time and you CoF fans will probably bash me (and my good buddy Comrade Ren) with "flamez of DOOM!!" and nonhelpful votes, but not everyone will like this band, you know. Get over it! Just listen to any band that Comrade Ren below me listed. And you fanboys/fangirls try to realize that CoF isn't real black metal (Dimmu Borgir is real black metal, my friends!).

1 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the worst black metal band ever........2007-02-23

Maybe not since Cradle of Cr@p isn't really black metal. This is about as evil and chilling as a crying baby. Harsh and irritating, yes, but evil? Nope. This is f@ggoth nu-metal, "black metal" for your typical nu-metal kids too afraid to listen to real metal. God I hate Dani's voice, and the music is awful. No bass, mediocre guitars, lame keyboards, and terrible drumming. I'd rather rip my d1ck off and throw it in Lake Michigan than listen to these guys.

For truly evil metal albums (not just black metal) listen to Bathory's "Blood Fire Death," Celtic Frost's "Morbid Tales," Nocturnus's "The Key," Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" (this is godly), Slayer's "Hell Awaits," and Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids" for starters.

Death to Cradle of Filth.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel to pictures at eleven..........2007-02-18

1983 - Plant returned with the same musician lineup except powell & now including barriemore barlow (jethro tull) as pictures at eleven (1982) collins (drums) / blunt (guitar) / martinez (bass) / woodroffe (keys) / barlow (drums on 2 tracks). There are also some backup vocalists here now as well that do some fine work. The album was again produced by plant. the album has the same funky formula as "pictures" but is far more keyboard driven & finds collins much more rhythmically aggressive especially on in the mood & horizontal departure. Plant's voice is in good standing & delivers both heavy & light perfomances well. Big log is a good performance with the standard collins drum machine backing him up(sounds great). In the mood is a great tune with an awesome driving tom-fill solo by collins along with great high-hat work. Woodroffe's keyboard pattern's are much more haunting in this album & have a louder presence than in "pictures". Keyboards are great particularily in thru' with the 2 step & in the mood. Blunt also does some pretty good guitar work especially in messin' with mekon, in the mood, & big log. Bass lines are boring. I usually like barlow (especially in tull's song's from the wood & stormwatch) as he is fairly aggressive but his 2 appearances in tracks 4&7 are boring. overall, great album & I listen to it alot. This album was followed by a tour in 1983 with collins on drums (no dvd though). Plant & collins were good pals & he played drums for zeppelin at live aid reunion in 1985. Plant/Collins duo gave music some depth in early 80s during the techno craze. Too bad it didn't last longer.

5 out of 5 stars Not thru' with the two step yet.......2007-02-18

This is Robert Plants finest work since Zeppelins Physical Grafitti. Robbie Blunt is an excellent guitarist, he deserved way more credit and is a forgotton great.
3 songs...In The Mood, Thru' With The Two Step, Big Log are among the best work of Roberts entire career.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Days of His Solo Work.......2006-05-08

I have loved this album since the day it was released. I still listen to it often, and still love it as much as ever. I have savored profound enjoyment out of these songs. They never fail to put me in a content place. POM is still my favorite out of all his solo work. Pictures at Eleven is absolutely sublime as well. Total ear candy by total eye candy. ;)

5 out of 5 stars A superb album from a legend in full swing.......2006-05-03

I initially got into Robert Plant around the time of his Now and Zen disc and worked backwards from there. And what a treasure trove was waiting. This album, along with Pictures at Eleven, constitute vital listening not only for hard rock or metal fans wanting to check out this guys solo stuff, but also for generic music fans.

Just like on Pictures at Eleven, this is not a heavy metal album, it's just brilliant. Tunes like Other Arms, In the Mood and Big Log are just excellent.

Specific points would be - excellent harmonies and melodies; a wonderful set of backing musicians; an open mind about musical direction; tidy production that hasn't really dated and also the feeling that everyone involved knew that this album was going to be good. It's like it was some sort of karma or something.

Any generic music fan should buy this album, it's a wonderful primer and for those few Zep fans who are unsure as to whether they should explore Plants solo stuff or not - the answer is a resounding yes.

2 out of 5 stars Principle of Moments.......2006-03-15

The one song "Big Log" which should be called "On the Road" is excellent. The other songs in this collection are all second rate.

Album Description

The new issue of Nosferatu contains more than 20 additional minutes of material left off the original release and for the first time appears as the complete soundtrack in the correct running sequence. Nosferatu contains four pieces which rank among the best in the Popol Vuh catalogue, thanks to a serene, mystic, deeply personal stance that basically transposes Hosianna Mantra into gothic music.

All Popol Vuh re-releases are manufactured as high quality collector's series with stickers indicating the bonus tracks. The Digipak spines have a design and when all are put together they form one big picture.

3 out of 5 stars Meditative But Repetitive.......2007-06-12

Popol Vuh is one of the "krautrock" bands I missed when in was in its prime. Now that its back catalogue is being remastered and re-released, the band is receiving renewed critical and listener interest. Recently, I read a review of Nosferatu in an English music magazine that pronounced this to be one of the essential recordings in the Popol Vuh catalogue. Well, perhaps I'd have been happier if I had purchased one of the recordings blessed here with five stars first.
I find Nosferatu an enjoyable CD, deeply meditative but also highly repetitive. Perhaps that is what lends it an entrancing quality. And maybe the repetition is there because this is primarily film music. Certainly, this would not be for everyday listening. But if you just want to relax and withdraw into your inner world, then putting on Nosferatu is a good way to do just that.
I will try out a couple of other Popol Vuh recordings to get a good overall feel for the band. But if this is your first outing with them as it is for me, I suggest you start with a different album unless of course the features I describe here appeal to you.

4 out of 5 stars Graceful and moving.......2006-03-24

Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable album. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. There is also a spiritual quality about it that evokes feelings of loss, sorrow and redemption. Together with the album Until The End Of The World, Nosferatu is my favourite soundtrack of all time. The music is never less than deeply moving, the epitome of grace and elegance.

3 out of 5 stars Bruder des Schattens truncated.......2005-07-20

When I was in 8th grade I saw Herzog's Nosferatu. I ran out and bought the only soundtrack I could find, which turns out to be the inferior "second" soundtrack, reproduced here in full beginning with track 5. I was disappointed that while it did contain the track On the Way (track 13 here), which featured the men's choir motif that is heard over the main credits (and at other points in the film), it was not orchestrated as the film version was, and did not include the lovely acoustic guitar/piano section. Later I found another soundtrack that featured the same movie poster art as this CD, and featured the first four songs on this CD. I preferred that soundtrack much more because it did contain the entire "Bruder des Schattens" which translated into English means "Brothers of Darkness." (The second part of the title, and I am assuming this signifies the acoustic guitar/piano section, is "Sons of Light."

A warning...this CD edits the Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light" track right after the acoustic guitar and piano begin. The whole thing ought to be about 16 or 17 minutes, and this is only 5:41. It is a real shame. I will tell you that if you really want the entire track, you can buy a wonderful CD entitled Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra, which contains works from two other albums, and does include the entire "Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light." That is what I did.

Overall this is a good CD and the songs are just as I remember them on the LP. Be aware that if you have seen the film but not heard these soundtracks before, very little of the soundtracks are in the movie. Granted, there are rather lengthy exceptions, but as someone else has pointed out, there is quite a bit of Wagner and Gounod, and many of the Popol Vuh tunes are not used in the movie at all. All in all, however, this is a very good compilation of Popol Vuh's style.

3 out of 5 stars Almost Complete .......2005-06-21

This is currently the most complete soundtrack album to Werner Herzog's 1979 movie remake of "Nosferatu." It has all of Popol Vuh's recordings that are associated with the film, BUT with the exception of the first track "Bruder Des Schattens." The album is also missing some other songs from the film.

On this disc, "Bruder Des Schattens" is an exception because it is not the complete song version. Popol Vuh's CD, "Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra," is one cd that features the complete 16 or so minute version of "Bruder Des Schattens." The CD's tracklist may list it as "Brothers of the Shade-Sons of the Light."

Music that ALL soundtrack albums to Herzog's 1979 remake of "Nosferatu" are missing:

"Prelude" from Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold" conducted by George Solti and performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker. The Wiener Philharmoniker is also or perhaps formerly known as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Sanctus" from Charles Gounod's "Messe Solennelle" (ALLEGEDLY the version featured on the cd, "Gounod: Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile; Petite Symphonie for wind instruments." The conductor, Jean-Claude Hartemann, is associated with that cd.)

"Zinskaro" by the Vocal Ensemble Gordela. Song sometimes listed as Tsintsharo, Tshintsharo, Zinzkaro, etc. Group sometimes listed as the Vocal Ansambl Gordela. Both Extremely rare.

A diegetic song performed by a little boy in the film. I'm sorry but I don't know anything else about it. Note: "Diegetic" means sounds picked up by the movie camera during the shooting of a scene.

4 out of 5 stars Finally "Variations" on Organ.......2006-07-04

For most of 30 years I have been searching for a recording of the Ives "Variations on America" played on the organ - and finally found it here. The performance is a bit more ponderous than the live performance I remember from 30 years ago, and certainly more so than the various orchestral and band arrangements that have been recorded. I would have preferred a smaller organ in a a church with less acoustic reverberation (i.e. in a small New England church on a late 19th century organ) but it is still a prize to have. As for the other pieces...I enjoyed the Ives "Adeste" prelude and the Copeland, but the unending "quiet din" of the the remainder of the album was too esoteric for my tastes. Cage is always an experimentalist, and his works for altered piano are curiosities. Before this album I did not realize how badly you could detune a pipe organ; it truely gave me a headache after the first 10 minutes. I have no problems with 20th Century dissonant harmonies (I list Ives as one of my favorite contempory composers) - but to me there is a difference between dissonant and "out of tune" - and the Cage is simply the latter. I gave the album 4 stars primarily for the Ives and partially for the Copeland. I seriously doubt that I will ever listen to this album past throse 4 tracks again...

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Contemporary Organ Disc.......2004-01-04

Along with the ECM disc "Annum Per Annum" this recording ranks as one of the finest surveys of contemporary/avant-garde organ discs. Hans Ola-Ericsson selects several pieces which give his view of 20th Century American music for the king of instruments. From little know pieces by Aaron Copland and the obliggatory Ives' "Variations on America" he moves on to include little known but quite approachable pieces by John Cage and Morton Feldman. This is not a noisy, cacophonous contemporary music disc approachable only by initiates. This is a friendly, enjoyable selection of well-played pieces on a nicely recorded disc. If you like American music this is worth your time and your money.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant work by Cage.......2000-07-19

I bought this for the Feldman piece, which was excellent, but was really struck by the Cage piece. Blew me completely away!

Cage modified an old piece from hundreds of years ago, adding random modifications. The result is like looking at an old shed which has had the usual things happen to it as it ages, cobwebs and structural decay. But perhaps more like a shipwreck, new things are growing in it!

Authentic music.

5 out of 5 stars Be Aware..........2007-07-03

I ordered a copy of this cd online from another seller and ended up getting what I am guessing is an unofficial reproduction of some sort on Old Metal Records. It sounds ok (slightly better than it did on cassette back in the day), but there are noticable differences in the layout and quality of the artwork. It is definately not the original Enigma release from 1989 or the upcoming remastered version from Old School Metal Records. I was ok with this because I just dumped it into iTunes anyway. You may not be. (I listen to my iPod 99.9% of the time these days.)

Just be careful and ask the seller what version they have before buying if this is something that would affect your decision to purchase.

All of that aside, this is great thrash. One of my all time favorites and essential to any metal fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars More Thrash,Less Speed Metal Then Know Your Enemy.......2005-08-14

Laaz Rockit rules, this is more of a thrash album rather then speed metal like Know Your Enemy. This album rules, they do Holiday In Cambodia which is a cover song and it just rules by Laaz Rockit.Fire In The Hole starts the album off and the song is awesome and then to end the album is The Omen which is such a perfect ballad song,it's kind of haunting.I suggest you find Annihilation Principle somewhere else where it's cheaper,if not it's worth paying that much for it.This album is different from City's Gonna Burn and Know Your Enemy,it's heavier and the singing is different. Please reissue all of Laaz Rockit's albums.

5 out of 5 stars THE authority in non-"Big-4" thrash metal.......2005-07-24

This album has some of the best thrash metal you'll ever hear. The power's there, the speed is there, and the songs are even catchy to boot. My personal favorites include Shadow Company, a cover of the Dead Kennedys' Holiday in Cambodia, Chain of Fools, and the closer The Omen. This is a MUST for any thrash metal fan, but I'd suggest finding it on LP for about $10 rather than shelling whatever insane price is currently getting asked.

4 out of 5 stars Jazzy Prog in the Canterbury Style.......2001-02-10

This CD owes more to fusion jazz than to prog, but it's a fine listen if you are into the Canterbury Style of bands such as Happy the Man. It's all instrumental and the band's from Athens, Georgia. Unfortunately they are no longer together. The songs for the most part are jazzy with alot of vintage keyboards.
