Mariano Merceron- La Epoca de Oro.......2000-12-30

I wouldn't be bothered writing a review about this lilliputian compilation by BMG, except to say that it is beyond me why the folks at BMG keep re-issuing meaningless little compilations of the same recordings over and over again. I consider this an insult to Mariano Merceron's memory! Mariano Merceron was one of Cuba's leading composers and band leaders. At one time in 1952, he featured luminaries like Beny More, Pacho Alonso and Fernando Alvarez on vocals inhis gigantic jazz band, not to mention composer and pianist Juan Bruno Tarraza on piano! To shelve all those wonderful recorded treasures by Mariano & Guests and just re-issue this microscopic compilation is totally ridiculous and shows how much the present administration at BMG Latin knows and cares about the golden era of afro-cuban music!

La Primera Piedra " is an old song . It dates back from the 60`s. It is still a vibrant song. I have not heard it in the last 30 years. If you can find it yourself and listen to it , you will understand my love for that song. Celio Gonzalez sang it. That`s why I want to get it now. Celio Gonzalez is not a song . Celio Gonzalez is a latin singer.

During the early 40's Cuban clarinet, saxophone virtuoso and band leader Mariano Merceron traveled to Mexico and settled there until about 1950. He briefly returned to Cuba and during the mid 50's returned to Mexico never to leave again, he died there in 1976. Although his big jazz band in Cuba and Mexico featured a varied repertoire, he mostly excelled in playing the danzon and because of it became one of Mexico's leading danzoneras. During the late forties and early 50's the Mariano Merceron Big Band featured Cuban celebrity singers like Beny More, Pacho Alonso and Fernando Alvarez and featured the great composer Juan Bruno Tarraza on piano. It can be said that this great band was at its perfection and talent peak when it featured all of the above in Cuba during 1951 and 1952! In this Orfeon CD, Mariano features "danzon" favorites on recordings made during his post RCA Victor years. Mariano Merceron was definitely one of Cuba's leading musicians and composers, who like Perez Prado and Enrique Jorrin, greatly influenced Cuban music.

Perez Prado, although now many cubans wont recognize him for nationalistic reasons, is a true musical genius. And this recording is Perez Prado groundwork. It a collectors item that merits owning for its historical implications. He was the one and only Mambo King.
