    Album Description

Ian Dury, like Ray Davies and Paul Weller was a very English talent. The colorful, metropolis-inhabiting characters like Billericay Dickie or Plaistow Patricia he sung about, and the ever so cockney music hall accent he chose to sing in, were a big part of that. But mostly, it was the detailed, poetic way he cataloged English life and the melting pot of musical styles he used to do so, from punk and funk to jazz and rock'n'roll, which left no doubt that Dury's work could only come from one place: the very heart of England. So few were surprised when after his death Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Madness and more all lined up to pay their respects with cover versions of some of his best loved songs. You'll find plenty of them here, in their original versions, culled from his entire career from the mid-'70s with pub rockers Kilburn & The High Roads through the golden years with the majestic Blockheads right up to the last studio recordings at the start of the '90s. 2 CD set is comprised of 34 tracks. Music Club. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Ian at his Best indeed.......2007-01-09

I love this album for many reasons but the first and foremost is that it gives the listener a taste of the raw and unpolished talent of this man as well as the very polished music he produced.

Ian Dury was unique in both voice and talent and anyone who studies or simply enjoys learning about music should listen to this album. It will broaden your horizons.

4 out of 5 stars How The English Did Punk.......2001-12-17

Yeah, you know "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick". It's not poetry, it's not vague, and it's not literate. But it IS funny, it IS energetic, and it IS a good tune. Ian Dury never took himself too seriously with his music, and the message he usually gave (well, besides "I am horny") was simple: "Lighten up!"

Listen to "Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3", "What A Waste!", and my personal favorite, "There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards".

You won't hear great guitar licks, nor drum solos, nor political angst, and you will NOT hear any "I-paid-my-dues-and-it's-lonely-at-the-top" tunes. Ian Dury is NOT going for your heartstrings. He's going for your funny bone... and your naughty bits.

5 out of 5 stars Reasons to be Cheerful.......2005-08-11

Ian's death certainly left a void in the music world. Ian introduced a break-water ripple to the new wave scene. That is, Ian is the master of good fun "pub punk." What Benny Hill is to British comedy; Ian Dury is to music -- cleverly provacative and entertaining. Ian Dury employed a mixture of lyrics and music to generate songs that either increased awareness on a social issue (such as "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll") or were simple pub tunes to cheer you up -- such as "Reasons to be Cheerful" and "Hit Me With Your Rhythum Stick." This CD features rarities of some of Ian's classis. You will love the way Ian effectively uses his deep voice to create the English "pub singer" atmosphere. True, Ian's voice is "limited." But, he uses it to absolute perfection. I definitely recommend this CD. After one listen, you will be hooked on Ian Dury and the Block Heads.

    Album Description

Following on from his highly acclaimed debut Len Parrott's Memorial Lift, Baxter proves that this was no fluke. His new album Floor Show sounds like it was recorded in St Paul's Cathedral, with vocals added in the whispering gallery. Narratively, it's seems to be about a disintegrating relationship, although this is no confession booth cupboard emptier. Guitars float like ectoplasm, Wurlitzer's spin beneath mirror balls, summoning the presence of spectral beings, swaying to luxurious, narcotic music that predates trip hop by a good sixty years. Stand-out tracks include the single 'Lisa Said', 'Cocaine Man and the wonderful 'Francesca's Party. The album was produced by Baxter, Nick Terry and mixed by Craig Silvey (The Coral, Magic Numbers) in West London in the winter of 2004 / 2005. The band are Damon Reece on drums and Mike Mooney on the electric guitar- both former members of clean living combo Spiritualized. Rough Trade. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Proof That Baxter Is The Better Dury.......2005-10-23

Just Great! The second CD by Baxter Dury puts him firmly on his own musical feet and takes him permanently out of the shadow of his famous father, Ian Dury of the Blockheads. Dad was famous for rauchous anthems like "Sex and Drugs and Rock N' Roll". Baxter is much more understated and broody, more mature, more thoughtful and alas (for him), not really commercial. This music is too high for the masses. "Floorshow" has collaborators from Spiritualized, but it has that same dreamy, stony, psychedelic feel that Baxter's first "Len Parrot's Memorial Lift" had with members of Portishead. Melancholic, isolated, lonely lyrics, very British...ironic and clever but not depressing, stories about other people on drugs...and he has the street creds to write it. His music is like the best of other people: Wire, Joy Division, early Pink Floyd, Thunderclap Newman, John Lennon, the psychedelic side of Ween or Supergrass. He has found a retro style that is in no way derivative. Trancy vocals on an understated but driving beat with catchy rhythm, psychedelic guitars and synthetic effects that create an atmosphere condusive to what I refer to as "zoning out". When you listen to this for the first time, you'll immediately listen to it again and again...it's that good. Then you'll run to get his first album and the EP "Oscar Brown", they're all equally good.

    5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2006-01-16

I bought this on cassette when I was a 10th grader in 1979 at a little music shop in Center City Philly. What was I doing walking around Philly at that age? Don't ask. If it wasn't for this cassette and a few others, I would have committed suicide. I have the album and still play it. As soon as I got a record player I bought the album which is one of the best in album art ever. It will always cheer me up. The CD is crisp and the extras a lot of fun

    Melt the guns
    Dismantle the bombs
    Love your neighbour
    Wherever they're from

Nobody writes lyrics like that anymore.

    5 out of 5 stars I'd give this 10 Stars if Possible.......2005-06-12

This album is my fave Ian Dury & the Blockheads. This is the one album I can count on to get ME out of the doldrums. I knew of Ian & Co from New Boots and Panties but this is THE one to own IMHO. It's so slick and wonderful and I'm not really a fan of slickness. But the competancy of the musicians and the insanity of the lyrics makes me smile from ear to ear (or ear to arse).
Playing it almost 30 years later (!) reminds me of how many different bands and people were releasing incredible and interesting music back in the day. They don't seem to do that anymore. Which is probably the reason I'm listening to music that is almost 30 years old...

5 out of 5 stars 'Do It Yourself' best captures the spirit of the times.......2004-12-07

This release best captures the spirit of the times with its quirky sound of fused punk, new wave and disco.
Most people know the song "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll," another Dury song that captured the era, but the songs on Do It Yourself blended the mental state of the club kids I best knew at the time.
Alienited(sp) and counter-culture but not wanting to do much more than spend the evening on the dance floor.
I regard this album along with Remain In Light by Talking Heads, and the first B-52's album as the best reflection of the care-free times of my college days. ***Also: give Ian's son Baxter Dury a listen. His debut CD is fantastic.***

5 out of 5 stars New wave jazzy disco.......2001-04-17

I bought this album in the early 80's to check out Ian Dury's take on "new wave." What I heard wasn't what I expected. This album sounds like very jazzy disco powered by a slick, tight band. At the time, I didn't think much of it, but now it just seems so unique and fun. The band is great, and Ian is a terrific vocalist, although not a terrific TRADITIONAL vocalist. The original album had only the first ten tracks listed above, so I'm not sure where the other tracks are from.

5 out of 5 stars Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick.......2000-07-20

4 out of 5 stars Listen to it a couple of times.......2002-11-30

The first time I listened to this album I was somewhat disappointed. However for some reason the next morning I started to hum some of the new versions of the songs, could it be that my subconcious was kicking in to pop the cd into my car again.

Are all the songs great, no. Are some of the songs fantastic, yes!!!! I have never been a big Mcartney fan, however his version of "I'm partial to your abracadabra" is incredible. Billy Bragg's indian inspired version of "Billericay Dickie" is comical. Listening to Cerys Mathews version of "Woman" is rocking to say the least. "Arseholes..." is performed magically. I could have done without Robbie Williams out of tune version of Sweet Gene Vincent.

THe album is great, it was definitely worth buying

4 out of 5 stars Smashing performances from Robbie, McCartney, & Sinéad.......2001-11-19

This is an essential purchase for fans of Ian Dury, Robbie Williams, and Paul McCartney. Luckily I fall into all three categories so this was right up my street.

The concept was to re-record Ian Dury And The Blockheads' 1977 smash hit album with the annoying title "New Boots And Panties" with the Blockheads supplying the instrumental talent and a group of guest vocalists replacing the late Ian Dury. It could be seen as tasteless to replace the very person to whom you're paying tribute, but because Dury's talents lay as much in the field of songwriting as in performing, this isn't the case. That said, some performers, especially Madness take their vocal inspiration directly from Dury's style and thus their offerings are as much tributes to the singer as his songs.

The album opens with Sinéad O'Connor's sexy version of Wake Up And Make Love To Me. Slight changes in the lyrics and Sinéad's inimitable voice render the song completely different from Dury's carry-on naughty-humour original, yet retain the integrity of the piece.

Robbie Williams, a great chum of Ian's in real life performs Sweet Gene Vincent possibly better than Ian himself, while the Blockheads rock it up in the style they perfected over years of live performance. This would make a great single if Robbie's record company would agree.

Another contender for strongest song on the album is Paul McCartney's Partial To Your Abracadabra. This is the Paul McCartney who sang Long Tall Sally back in action and the piano accompaniment is reminiscent of Lady Madonna. It's astonishing how well he fits in with the Blockheads.

Madness perform without the Blockheads, but this is all right, because their band set-up, the use of the saxophone, and some of Suggs's vocal mannerisms were copied directly from Ian & The Blockheads, and the band makes a polished imitation of the original.

Then it all goes horribly wrong. Yes, Billy Bragg is a cockney too, but he lacks the charm of Ian Dury, and his backing band is less cohesive than the Blockheads. His version of Billericay Dickie is just annoying.

Wreckless Eric's Clever Trevor manages to be funny and interesting, with a very toppy vocal, and the last four tracks are unremarkable, if competent covers.

I would give this album 5 stars for the first four songs, three for the last five, but Zero for Billy Bignose, hence my average rating of ****
