A Young Tenor's Tribute to his Homeland.......2002-10-22
A vibrant and touching journey through American music, from the Old American Songs of Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber's Sure on this Shining Night and Simple Song from Leonard Bernstein's Mass, through crossover Broadway tunes such as I Gotta Get back to New York and Putting on the Ritz, to heart-stoppingly patriotic hymns such as America the Beautiful and Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Unique, entertaining, accessible, listenable.......2002-05-08
...Other reviewers called this album hip hop, but I think that's an oversimplification of this album, since I don't particularly care for hip hop (fun to dance to, but not not much of it would I buy normally). It's really a fusion of a lot of different styles, which is what the Japanese are very good at in different areas of life, like cuisine and technology. For example, a lot of the album is very jazzy (esp. the parts where the lead singer Lisa sings--she has an incredibly smooth voice that could easily be part of Manhattan Transfer), while it's the other male members of the group who provide the hip hop flavor ("flavor" being the most appropriate word, I think). This album made me realize that Japanese is a great language for rap because of its syllabic, not-inflection/accent-dependent (vs., say, French, which is very nasal, and Chinese, which is dependent on rising/falling tones). An American hearing it for the first time may not even realize the rapping is switching from English to Japanese and back because it's so smooth and seamless. So the fact that much of it is sung in Japanese should not turn people off too much. The rap is very light--kind of a pop-rap--you don't feel like the rapper is an angry, persecuted man who wants to hit back at society. Your mother probably won't mind if you played this CD in the living room. This is not meant to slight the CD--it's a unique fusion of a variety of styles with very high production values.
Japanese Hip Hop: The Next Generation.......2002-01-30
I would have to say is that this CD was the one that truly changed the face of Japanese Hip Hop and truly seperating it from American hip hop. Dragon Ash did attempt the same earlier but m-flo was around in their own indie days, and they were GOOD! And they still are! This album released in early 2000 is one I highly recommend to all of you. You start out with a funky little Global Astroliner intro which goes on in and out through the album... what a way to complement a themed CD! Then you gotta hold on to your hats as 10 Below Blazing comes on, and it doesn't stop there. Lisa gives you her soul with Come Back To Me, Verbal, Taku, and friends go all out with saywhatchugotta, and then the songs which combine the melody and rap like Hands and Love Or Truth. Must I not say that this CD was the catalyst for the new flavah generation of Japanese Hip Hop? Did I hear Steady & Co, the hottest Japanese hip hop group of late 2001 (and their number one selling single in Japan "Shunkashuutou"), and Rhymester? Let's not forget the many others. This CD started it all. And it still goes strong on my stereo system today. Get it!
It's Alien, but cool!.......2000-12-04
m-flo (mediarite-flo) is a Japanese Hip-hop/Soul group comprised of three members: rapper, verbal (a.k.a. Far East Representative), composer, taku, and lead singer, Lisa (a.k.a Unika). The bilingual group is known for seamlessly blending Japanese and English in their songs. In their debut album, Planet Shining, m-flo integrates tracks from various genres (including Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz, Poetry, and J Pop) and surrounds them with clever interludes, which mimic an entertainment system on board a Global Astro Liner voyaging towards "Planet Shining".
Japanese popular music has evolved from Enka (folk) to adapt a western influence in music. R&B and Alternative artists such as Utada Hikaru, Glay, and others have all been compared to artists in the United States, but m-flo has avoided this tradition by reinventing Japanese Hip Hop. By writing, producing, and performing all the songs in Planet Shining, m-flo shows off their ability to create original work. This talent can be found in songs like "Come Back to Me", a moving slow jam about mistakes and forgiveness in love, "saywhatchagotta", a pure Hip Hop track, "Deep Within", a profound poem performed in English, and tracks like "Been So Long", "Ten Below Blazing", and "L.O.T.", which combine different styles of music. This works very well because Lisa and Verbal alter their voices in different songs to convey the emotion that the song is meant to arouse.
If you're looking for innovative and entertaining Japanese music or any kind of music at all, consider Planet Shining.
