Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars New Yo-Yo Fan.......2006-07-09

I had never listened to Yo-Yo Ma before (that I knew of) and then I was at a dance recital a few months ago. Two little ballerinas danced to "Simple Gifts" with Alison Kraus, and I had to have that song. I really enjoy playing this album when my family is just hanging out reading or playing with the baby in the living room. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way. Simple Gifts is still my favorite piece on the album, I only wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!.......2006-06-04

I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the lyrics sung by Alison Krauss it was a wonderful choice. Her vocals matched the cello incredibly well. Track 8 is a wonderful song that I love to hear being played on the cello. For any person who loves classical music or cello music this CD is a good choice to buy. It will be well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-20

While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical. Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply foolish. And while this is technically a solo album, the way Yo-Yo brings in guest artists to perform with him shows his flexibility as an artist. His version of Simple Gifts is so much more than a school chorus; it is an amazing cellist playing the accompaniment on a song that is meant to be sung.

On a more positive note, I found every track beautiful, from the elegant solo cello in the Bach cello suite to the haunting vocal line in the Bobby McFerrin piece. Yo-Yo Ma gathered a wide range of intriguing pieces to make this fantastic album.

2 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2004-02-10

This is a compilation of many different styles; look Yo-Yo can play bluegrass! Not really "Classic" Yo-Yo.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you're not familiar with Yo-Yo Ma.......2002-12-27

This CD is a good sample of what yo-yo ma has acheived in his musical career, if you want a more in depth listening of his talents than I suggest getting the simply baroque CD. The only thing that I didn't like about this cd was that the compositions were to mixed up in the genres. There was a bit of classical, some movie works, a great song by John Williams, and some of The Tango series music. If you would rather listen to one genre, get a CD that just has Classical or Contemerary, don't get a jack of all trades cd.

Classical guitar lovers looking for a jazzier change of pace shouldn't be disappointed by Nylon & Steel, Manuel Barrueco's album of duets with Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, and Andy Summers. But ironically enough, it's the two solo tunes that bookend this disc, Barrueco's "Odeon" and his solo guitar arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Rodeo," that are the real highlights. His three cuts with Di Meola are a mixed affair, but the interplay between the duo seems to gel on the longer "Azzurra." Steve Morse's electric guitar is loaded with Bill Frisell-like effects, but on "Wolvesville," he and Barrueco create an inspired and unleashed fusion between rock and classical music (the inspiration for the piece is a Villa-Lobos étude). Three mellow collaborations with Summers round out this set of intriguing guitar instrumentals. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of quality music........2005-04-14

The tracks on this recording vary from exuberant latin-american jazz - like 'Beyond The Mirage'- to more introspective music like 'The Grand Passion'. 'Northern Lights'is very sensitive as well, it makes you a little bit melancholic. Between all the noisy dance-music we have nowadays, 'Nylon & Steel'is an oasis of quality and high standard.(Though there is no classical music played on this cd - apart from Villa-Lobos - don't let that spoil the fun). Something about this music reminds me of the piano-music of Brad Mehldau: it sounds familiar and at the same time it's something new.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-06-04

I didn't think I would like this CD. However, after the first listen, I had to admit this is a fantastic CD!

4 out of 5 stars cool classical/rock/jazz fusion.......2001-10-29

This is a very interesting combination of the classical and rock/jazz worlds of guitar playing. All four guitarists have amazing chops and they're all quite tasteful on this recording. If you're a fan of Barrueco, DiMeola, Morse, or Summers, check out this CD. I had heard Barrueco and Summers before, and knew of DiMeola and Morse by reputation, so I had an idea of what to expect...but "Nylon & Steel" surpassed those expectations. Very cool, indeed.

1 out of 5 stars A Disaster.......2001-09-08

Except for the two Barrueco solos, this CD made me nauseous!!!Listening to it reminded me why I stopped listening to most improvised music.

Throughout tracks 2 to 4, DiMeola struggles futilely to come up with anything but comical latin cliches. DiMeola's mindless noodling is an affront to Barrueco's musicality. Summers playing on the other hand, while somewhat musical, is mostly syrup.

Villa-Lobos' Etude 1 duet hurt the most. I have played this piece for years and, though an etude, I find it quite entertaining (as do most classical guitarists I think). During most of the piece, Morse simply plays scale-exercise filler and obliterates all the musical ideas in the piece. Listen, Villa-Lobos was one of the most original and masterful composers of this century. It is criminal to think that playing this electronic fluff over Villa-Lobos' etude does it justice.

A word to the uninitiated - buy Sergio and Odair Assad's "Latin Music for Two Guitars" and learn something about the depth and beauty of serious latin guitar music.

Fusion firebrand Al Di Meola continues his passion of the 1990s, compositions written and inspired by Astor Piazzolla. What's remarkable is how strong Di Meola's own music sounds next to those of the late Brazilian tango avatar. "Misterio" opens the album and sets the tone with a lush, romantic setting for acoustic guitar interpolated with colorful accents of sitar and winds, triggered by Di Meola's MIDI-guitar. It's a dynamic piece that takes unusual twists, and it sits comfortably next to Piazzolla's "Double Concerto," which follows. Again, using his strangely uncredited MIDI-guitar, Di Meola emulates Piazzolla's inimitable bandoneon sound. The guitarist has assembled a phenomenal group, including bassist John Patitucci, percussionists Gumbi Ortiz and Arto Tuncboyacian, pianist Mario Parmisano, and second guitarist Hernan Romero.

With the virtuosity of his playing, Di Meola is often overlooked as a composer, and The Grande Passion underscores what a fine composer he is. String arrangements color "Double Concerto," the title track, and several other pieces, but Di Meola hardly needs orchestral frills to legitimize his already epic compositions. The guitarist has slipped from critical prominence since the days of Return to Forever, Splendido Hotel and the guitar trio with John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia (try out Friday Night in San Francisco for a great trio outing), but Di Meola spent the 1990s doing some of his best work with his World Sinfonia group and The Grande Passion starts the new millennium in fine form. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy Elegence, fantastic Artistry.......2001-11-21

This album totally surprised me. I had really no idea what to expect. After picking up The Infinite Desire and falling in love with that, this album turns out to be similar in a few respects but ultimately a total new direction. The music is the ultimate maturing of Al Dimeola as a composer and arranger. Tracks are dreamy, artistic, and really relaxing. Several cuts, particularly Grand Passion would make good movie themes. MY favorite were Libertango, Mysterio, and The Grand Passion though they are not by any means the best ones. I loved it all!
I hope people will not expect Al to contiue fusion as it was before. His albums of the last 10 years show that an artist can not and will not simply repeat himself over and over. He has to find new directions and new ideas, or new ways to express himself. Simply put, next to Splendido Hotel and Elegent Gypsy, this may be his greatest album of the last 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars The most essential Di Meola album of the last 15 years.......2001-07-30

After dabbling in a lot of different musical styles in the last 15 years, some accused Al Di Meola of having lost his direction. However Al has really found his feet in the last couple of years by focusing his compositions upon his most central ability: to express himself on an acoustic guitar. As an acoustic guitarist, Al has always played with something like a flamenco or even classical guitarist's flair and one suspects that its his acoustic guitar music which will stand the test of time best. Since 1990 he has also focused upon tango guitar music and drawn a good deal of inspiration from Astor Piazzolla's music. Owing to the greater maturity of his compositions (and the sympathetic orchestral backing), this record captures Di Meola, the acoustic guitarist, at his best. The Grande Passion, featuring a small orchestra and contemporary jazz band, is important because (like what the album 'Secret Story' did for Pat Metheny) it seems to encapsulates the whole spirit of Al's musical career up to now into a symphonic whole. Though heavily produced, this album (unlike Metheny's) never sounds contrived. The music is indeed spirited and passionate and draws (genuinely) upon Latin musical styles, or more exactly Italian, Argentinian and even Cuban styles. The balance between electric and acoustic instruments (including the orchestra) on this record is perfect; a novel achievement. Although synthesisers are used, the total emphasis upon acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and orchestra on all the tracks means the music has an organic quality about it. In addition, the orchestra is not just there for 'dressing': all the instruments in and outside the orchestra play a role in the compositions. This makes the music very vital or 'natural' sounding. The emphasis in a lot of contemporary jazz and pop music is upon SOUNDS, producing records with a lot of samples or guest 'world-music' artists that play one or two notes; the overall effect being a fusion of sounds with no real artistic merit. This album is the opposite of that trend, and notwithstanding the heavy emphasis upon percussion, this album could impress a fan of classical orchestra music with its depths of expression. Di Meola's compositions do indeed stand up well beside the three Piazzolla compositions on this album; particularly the title track which reaches such heights of expression, I feel this track ought someday to become part of the classical guitarist's repetoire (already Manuel Barrueco has recorded it). Di Meola became well known for his loud electric guitar playing from 1975-83. Some would say he has changed a lot since then, but have a listen to some of his earliest acoustic tracks like 'Lady of Rome', 'Mediterranean Sundance', 'Fantasia Suite', 'Two to Tango' and 'Scenario' and you will see that though there was less harmony to the music back then, the spirit of his music has not really changed that much at all. As a fan of DiMeola, this album is important to me in that it has made me realise this. One last thing: The other two World Sinfonia records had a folk feel to them, often with two strumming guitars, accordion and nothing else, with Saluzzi on accordion taking a leading role in the music: this album is more of a Di Meola album (or a group album). For that reason, those Di Meola fans who didn't care for the other World Sinfonia albums should not allow themselves to be put off this one, which is far more characteristic of Al Di.

3 out of 5 stars Late *Brazilian* tango avatar???.......2001-07-19

Oh my God. This is almost as good as Brazil, Buenos Aires D.C. Congratulations, Mr. Editor! You should win a one way ticket to see the Iguassu Falls at the Amazonic Forest...

People: Astor Piazzolla was not Brazilian, and he never lived in Brazil. He was from Argentina. And although Brazilians love tango, particularly in the south of the country, there are no significant tango composers in Brazil. Some Brazilians did compose some tangos, but there is nobody who could be called a tango composer. The tango composers are mainly in Argentina and Uruguay.

Regarding the CD, it is nice, pleasant to listen. In my not so humble opinion, The Double Concerto is the most beautiful piece. But it does not relate much to the spirit of Piazzolla music. It lacks the breath and the burning emotions, and there is nothing that reminds a tango rhythm - latin american rhythms, Brazilian or Hispanics, from Bossa to Salsa, have a cadence that few foreign musicians were able to perform - and DiMeola was not one of them (but Yo-Yo Ma and Barenboim were, look for Soul of the Tango and Mi Buenos Aires Querido).

I do like DiMeola, but even keeping in mind that he was not intending to play tango, that it was only inspired by Piazzolla... saying that this CD is close to Piazzolla is not true. Nevertheless, it is a nice CD.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed..........2001-05-17

I am a 10 year fan of Al DiMeola and have listened to just about every recording that the artist has released to date. I must say that this is one of my least favorite. I guess it's a personal preference issue but i just cannot listen to Al's music played with acoustic guitar and the synthesizer mixed together (Libertango stands out). It sounds too awkward for me. For me, the musician is at its best when the compositions are either all electric or all acoustic (Tirami Su, World Sinfonia, Kiss My Axe, Infinite Desire, Heart of the Immigrant), but the passion is totally lost when digitized music is mixed with acoustic playing. There are some great compositions in this albums, but it spoils the enjoyment when one of my all-time favorite music pieces, Libertango, is not as stimulating as it could have been. Another reason I did not like this album was that, to me, it shared too many similarities to the musician's recent albums (Infinite Desire, Orange & Blue), when I thought this would be an all-acoustic album.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-06-04

Sexteto Mayor is a MUST HAVE in every tango lover's collection. This is authentic Argentinian tango at its best!

    5 out of 5 stars tango y mucho mas...............1999-03-27

Excelente música para alguien con una vida moderna, ancioso de recordar el pasado....!

    5 out of 5 stars Tango Perfection.......2006-12-10

I was searching Rhapsody for "Hernando's Hideaway" and came across this gem. It doesn't get any better, that I know of. It's dynamic, tight, bright, and so rhythmic. It really swings. Delightful.

      Album Description

Known as El Zorzal Criollo, the songbird of Buenos Aires, Carlos Gardel is a legendary figure in Argentina. The charismatic French-born singer's career coincided with the development of that intrinsically Argentine's cultural icon, the Tango: the music, song and dance of Buenos Aires' tenements. Carlos Gardel was, and still is, The Passion of Argentina, and this emotional compilation pays tribute to his musical career.

The classics come alive inthis beautiful recording byJose Carreras. From thepowerful rendition of Wagners "Tannhauser" Overture to the lovely "Lenote de Chopin" and PaulMcCartneys "Celebration",it's a pleasure to listentoo. Jose sings absolutelybeautiful, with lots ofpassion. He sings a wonderful tango "El eco detu voz" and that hauntingmelody of "Starry Night".

Anything that starts off with Shura Cherkassky's delicious account of a Tango by Albéniz has got to have something going for it, and this set seems to score over and over again. It's an interesting piece of programming, since having got off to a Spanish start, we are led through Bach (traditionally the starter), Balakirev (his famously unplayable Islamey thrown off coolly by Julius Katchen), Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Gershwin, Gottschalk, Granados, Grieg, and Handel. One thing they certainly all have in common is the passion of the title, and they are well served by our guides, who include Tureck, Kempff, Kocsis, Lill, Barenboim, Argerich, Michelangeli, De Larrocha, Gilels, and Gavrilov. It is worth mentioning so many, since these are top names in their respective fields and it gives an indication of what you can expect from this set. And while you would rightly expect veteran Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha to give us the full treatment in Albéniz and Granados, listen to her delightful piece of Handel, which concludes the set. Recordings range in time from 1955 to 1998, and the freshness of the playing transcends changes in recording technology during those years. --Keith Clarke

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Classical Piano.......2005-08-04

I picked up this CD because it had some of my favorite piano pieces of Bach, Brahms and Bartok on it.

The renditions on these discs are terrific. And every single selection is really worth listening to- this is some of the best classical piano out there. If you're like me and aren't really concerned about owning the complete Bach, Brahms, Chopin, etc, this is the disc to pick up for a good sampling of it all.

And it's a good value too. Two discs for the price of one!
