Product Description
The music of Curvature is quite simply like nothing you have ever heard before. Well espected in both the jazz and folk worlds, West's innovative and at times brilliant compositions are creating a new musical style that pushes the envelope of instrumental acoustic music. This CD is the first recording by Curvature and as such it documents the first forays into this new musical universe. Continuum is distinguished from other Curvature recordings by it's eclectic sounds and acoustic feel. The original Curvature ensemble herein includes Jack West on acoustic guitar Scott Proffitt on percussion, Calder Spanier (of the Charlie Hunter quartet) on sax, Mike Marshall (of David Grisman Quintet fame) on mandolin, and others.

Continuum is about as apt a title as it gets for John Mayer's third studio disc. Every element, from the peerless guitar playing to the plainspoken poetry of the lyrics to the breathy-sincere singing, makes a return from previous efforts. But to weakly pronounce this another worthwhile effort from an artist the world has come to expect a whole lot from and then call it a day would be no minor misdeed, because it's also the best, boldest disc he's ever made. Taking maturity as a theme throughout, Mayer tackles a batch of adulthood's bogeymen: indifference on the uptempo chart-climber "Waiting for the World to Change," aging on the melancholy-sweet "Stop This Train," and emotional trainwreckage on the big-rocking "In Repair." That's not to suggest he's turned overly introspective--check the Jimi Hendrix cover "Bold As Love," where he hits one home for guitarists who've been living in the shadow of legend everywhere, and the hard-charging "Belief," which benefits from a mesmerizing, liquid groove. Continuum may be the third in a series, but a creative cop-out this is not; Mayer is his generation's musical superman--powerful, unassailable, and magnetic. Hand that man a cape. --Tammy La GorceAmazon.com
John Mayer's third studio album follows the multi-platinum "Room for Squares" (2001) and "Heavier Things" (2003), and marks his first turn as producer. It is his most soulful, cohesive collection yet and he says it's no accident that this project is where all of his efforts, his potential, and his disparate influences fully come together.

Mayer ContinuesTo Mature.......2007-06-29
Mayer moves more towards a bluesier sound on this album than any of previous releases with the exception of (Trio). The lead off track and single "Waiting for the World to Change" has this feel. The song has anti cable news network feel as evident in the line "when when you trust your television, what you get is what you got cause when they own the information they can bend it all they want." Is Mayer paranoid here or is he tired of Fox News' "fair and balanced" tagline?
The following track, I DONT TRUST MYSELF (WITH LOVING YOU) show cases Mayer's amazing guitar talent. He really leans toward the blues guitar throughout the entire album. Roy Hargrove's horns really push this track into the blues. Another fine Mayer track and some outstanding guitar work.
BELIEF is the next track and is a song with anti war message in it. This evident in lines like "We're never gonna win the world. We're never gonna stop the war", "What puts a hundred thousand children in the sand? Belief can," and "What puts the folded flag inside his mother's hand? Belief can" Mayer's guitar again has a blues riff in this uptempo track. One of my favorites.
GRAVITY is the next song and single off of this record. Once again, fantastic guitar playing in a blues key. The lyrics here are really quite clever. Is he talking about the gravity on the planet or a person named gravity? Could go either way!
The rest of the songs on this album are fantastic! VULTURES is a great song with some fine Fender Rhodes and organ work from Ricky Peterson. This track could easily be another single. In fact most of the tracks on this record be singles!
My absolute favorite track on the album is "SLOW DANCING IN A BURNING ROOM". This song is clearly about the end of a relationship with a woman. The lyrics are once again top notch Mayer. But again its the guitar work that shines on this track. Mayer pulls the guitar lick on this track that really sounds like the guitar is weeping! It "sets the mood" for this track. Its John Mayer at his best!
Steve Jordan's drum work and Pino Palladino's bass playing on this album really compliment Mayers guitar work. The make a tight group. Its obvious that their work on the "Trio" album set the stage for Mayer to hook up with these two guys on this album. The musicianship on this album is tight and top notch.
In summary, I can not recommend this album enough. Mayer has clearly matured most notably in his guitar work and also in his lyrics and subject matter. Mayer is really on track to be a great guitarist. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with over then 10 years or so.
GET THIS ALBUM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Topflight pop singer pays tribute to her heritage on this amazing roots ranchera album that also features excellent backing by the world-famous Mariachi Vargas, all under the experienced hand of master arranger-composer-producer Ruben Fuentes. Everything clicks wonderfully here, but numbers that set a new standard include "Tu Solo Tu," an incredibly harmonic love ode; "Por un Amor," on the price of real love; and "Los Laureles," a song of declaration on which Ronstadt soars unbelievably high. These are old Mexican classics, played by arguably the world's best mariachi group and sung by one of North America's greatest vocal talents. Extras include performances by another world figure, requinto player Gilbert Puente, who made trio history when he led Mexico's Los Tres Reyes in the '50s and '60s. In the mariachi-ranchera genre, this CD easily ranks among the very best. --Ramiro BurrCustomer Reviews:

Cuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. González plays a rainbow of Cuban rhythms and prods his percussionists and lone trumpeter to great depths of conversation and great heights of flash. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
An un/rediscovered gem!.......2007-01-10
All the musicians and singers are very special in their own singular, as well as collective right, but my personal favorite is Ruben Gonzalez on piano. What a Gem! I urge anyone who loves Afro-Cuban Jazz to add this to your collection, you WILL NOT be disappointed!
A must buy for anyone that likes Cuban music.......2005-11-28
There is a nice variety. Unlike with some folk music where after you've heard a few songs it starts to sound the same--each song here is a gem of its own. This is one of those CDs where you will like every song.

Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13
The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.
Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

Astor Piazzolla lived and died as tango's bad boy, having almost single handedly invented the music's vanguard, the form known as tango nuevo. It took Piazzolla decades to reach his unequivocal apex, which is captured flawlessly on Tango Zero Hour. When this recording was cut in 1986, some of the compositions Piazzolla and his quintet cued up were standards for the band. Whether it was an epiphanic period or not, the recording captures an ensemble alchemically transforming seriously complex works into goose-bump-inducing electricity. Pianist Pablo Ziegler brings his jazz background into the mix with jarring urgency, just as violinist Fernando Suárez Paz makes quavering classical inflections sing amid Piazzolla's here tender and there blistering bandoneon. For a peak experience in music that challenges the ear to dance and the body to fully listen, look no further than this recording. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Lhasa De Sela has distinguished herself as a singer and storyteller with her debut album, La Llorona. The 25-year-old Montreal resident, who grew up traveling through Mexico while living on a school bus, sings of her tortured heart with the accompaniment of guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers and a cabaret-style band. Already compared to those of Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday, De Sela's haunting voice is memorable on each of the 11 songs (only 3 are nonoriginal) that range in inspiration from Mexican ranchera to Eastern European klezmer. --Cristina Del SestoAmazon.com
Half Mexican American, half Jewish American and all rainbow chile, singer Lhasa de Sela's Spanish-language, world music/alt-rock debut shimmers with honest emotionalism, with no trace of the posturing and whining that passes these days for deep, girlish thoughts. The girl's young, but she's equipped with imagination, confidence, and technique enough to take that husky, urgent alto anywhere she wants. And she goes there. Guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers cloaks all this splendor in rapturous arrangements that include, among other elements, the sound of rain, flamenco-influenced guitar, and a slide bass of his own design. Even if you don't understand Spanish, you can't miss the point ... the feelings. Lhasa's just begun, but her stranger-than-fiction background and dazzling gifts already place her among music's top-rung storytellers. --Elena OumanoCustomer Reviews:

The music playing in the shop got her attention and she asked the owner at the cash register if she could purchase the cd. The store owner agreed and took it out of his CD player and gave it to her half price since it was used. (At least he included the outer cover and the booklet inside).
I first listened to the album while i was chatting late night on the computer with my friends. I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics or the songs, it was just intended to be background music.
I finished the whole cd, i was still chatting, and i wanted to listen it again. I didn't understand the lyrics, but it sounded sad. I felt bad, it made me think that De Sela came from poverty and an unhappy childhood, i thought of South American kids running around in narrow streets.. I realized that i really loved these songs, i don't know what the lyrics are about, it just sounds that there is some pain and love in these songs.. In the 5th song "El Payande" it sounds like she is defying somebody/something and then gives in. And then the next song starts playing, it made me recall a summer in Barcelona.. Gaudi, colors, late nights a touch of Picasso somewhat Don Quixote...
This cd is for people who are looking for a piece of imaginitive music, not intended to listen in the car or whilst jogging..

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick MitchellCustomer Reviews:

This Scottish group is an amazingly talented ensemble, taking salsa traditions and rhythms and infusing them with celtic instruments and traditions. The performances are tight, inventive, and I defy you to listen to this album and not want to dance, even if it's just in your chair.
Their closing rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" is not to be missed. I WILL buy their future albums.
Not bad at all.......2005-05-04
The "Guajira Sin Sol" track is amazing, my personal favorite. This song could play at all the best Latin lounges, it is so smooth and chilling, yet makes you want to jump up and shake your booty.
"Ave María de Escocia Medley" was the third best track, a fun song with great lyrics. Great salsa track, the hardest salsa track on the CD. Great stuff, and you WILL want to dance to this!
The other songs are good, just not as good as those above. The "Cumbia Celtica" track is very innovative, and they actually manage to pull off an authentic Colombian/Scottish feel. These gentlemen are great musicians, and we should be watching them in the future. With just a little more tweaking, they might just be the next top band in Salsa.
