Acoustic Alchemy are the British acoustic guitar duo of Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale, and with "This Way" they are celebrating a remarkable two decades since their debut with 1987's Red Dust. For all this time they have been a quiet phenomenom, constantly topping the jazz charts in the USA, being nominated for GRAMMY's and touring the world. Following the pop-soul vibe of 2005's "American English", the duo have delivered their most aggressive and swinging, hard rocking and artfully jazzy disc to date. The regular touring/recording band of Terry Disley, Snake Davis, Fred White, Julian Crampton and Greg Grainger are joined by guests such as the buzz-of-today pianist Neil Cowley, trumpeter Rick Braun, saxman Jeff Kashiwa and, on the reggae-tinged Ernie, the great Specials Trombonist, Dennis Rollins. Just two tracks, "Out of Nowhere" and "This Way" feature only the duo - the rest are a fine mix of old-school soul/jazz, funk, reggae, and rock with a mixture of electric guitars, acoustic guitars and the horn section all combining to create a smooth but completely passionate album of classy jazzy guitar music.

Not one of Acoustic Alchemy's best albums.......2007-07-15

I bought and listened to This Way, and also went to Acoustic Alchemy concert in Phoenix on June 23rd, which mainly promoted this album. It's very listenable, but it's fair-to-middling alongside the rest of AA's 20-year oeuvre. More significantly, it's not very much like the Nick Webb-era material, except possibly for the title track. Other good tracks are "Love Is All There Is," "Ernie," and "Carlos the King" (named that because, according to Greg Carmichael, it was influenced by Carlos Santana). They played "Ernie" and "Carlos the King" at the concert, but "Carlos" wasn't so great live, because the album version has a substantial trumpet part and they didn't bring a trumpeter on the tour. The worst tracks are probably "Slampop" and "Egg."
The current state of AA is like what an Amazon reviewer said about Pierce Brosnan's last 007 movie--that it bore little resemblance to the original Bond. I'm disappointed, although this album is decent enough that I'll probably keep it. Look at the first review of this album; I agree with it.

When was the last time you enjoyed every song on a CD? Acoustic Alchemy is about
to change your mind about CD purchases! From beginning to end, every track grabs your
attention and excites one emotion or the other. Well versed, well timed, well written and
very well executed.

In listening to this work of art, it is clear that this troupe had a great time producing this.
Everyone whom I have shared this with has fallen for it, and I suspect - no - predict you will too!!

I gave it 4 out of 5, only because I wanted more! Another 3-4 tracks like these would have been
perfect! I just have to wait for their next compilation!

Come This Way.......2007-07-03

This Way has been a long time coming. It is fabulous, and has alot of older Alchemy sounds plus great new tunes. Fantastic guest artists. Bought 2 so I don't have to share. We knew it would be great when we heard them play Ernie in concert. Been waiting since then for its release. Thanks to Amazon, received it within 6 day to my front door. You did it again, AA and so did you Amazon.

Who are Acoustic Alchemy?.......2007-07-03

Acoustic Alchemy is, or was based on the foundation of two acoustic guitarists with a simple standard format around their playing. Drums, Bass guitar, and some keys. Contrary to an earlier review, when AA bought their flight to the States from England by winning a talent competition to play aboard American Airlines(also AA...cute~), they did so as Greg Carmichael and the late Nick Webb... not Miles Gilderdale. Nick actually recruited Greg to form AA. Gilderdale did not enter until after 1997's Positive Thinking (which Nick contributed some song-writing to help in the transition that Greg would continue forward and keep AA alive). Nothing against Miles, and not to nit-pic about detail, but one cannot mention Acoustic Alchemy in the same breath without Nick Webb...but the fact is, the music that was truly AA unfortunately died in Nick's absence.
I've loved these guys since I bought the 1987 MCA Sampler LP that also included Larry Carlton and other up and coming instrumentalists. The element that made AA was the 'focus' on the acoustic guitars through the fresh, infectious melodies of Nick and Greg. They fused many styles, but always with a catchy hook and melody. I was fortunate enough to see these guys live in 1993 prior to their release of 'The New Edge'and also met them after the show(as they often met with fans for autographs) & was a definite highlight as far as live shows go. Really nice English lads! ((Get the 'Best Kept Secret' DVD!~and the counterpart CD, 'Arcanum'! ie: a nice moment when they were in Florida for a gig, and visited the launch of the Columbia Space Shuttle, inspiring them to dedicate a song to the awe that is 'Columbia')).
Since Nick passed on however, it appears to me that the formula that created AA was lost and to cover up for it, the acoustics that would grab you, draw you in and not let go, suddenly became mulit-layered, multi-instrumental, I-hate-to-say-typical, pop-Jazz that only leaves me wondering. Sounds good, and I'm glad that Greg's getting recognition through awards and all, but only pales in comparison to the years prior to the wishfully optomistic 'Positive Thinking'. I applaud Greg for continuing the dream, and I certainly wish him the best, but I'm sad to say, AA has left behind it's 'Natural Elements' for a more safe and formulaic environment.

Superb! Superb! Superb!.......2007-06-10

Oh wow! When i bought this CD i have a got feeling it will be a knock-out album. My senses are correct, their latest effort, gave me smiles!!! It's really one of the best smooth jazz releases of 2007! Ever since their "Red Dust" debut, and after 20 years - they are still great as ever. It's a nice way to celebrate their anniversary. I'm sure Nick Webb's spirit knows that with a smile on his face. AA is really AA! :)

Great meditation CD.......2007-03-12

This is my new "go-to" CD for meditation. I'm a fan of vibrational music for meditation, but sometimes the vibrational CD's can get repetitive and boring. This CD has multiple tracks with variety in the music, but with calming vibrationals in the background. Good for meditation, guided imagery, yoga, or great background music for reading.

Following a suggestion from Candace B. Pert, Ph.D. found in her book "Molecules of Emotion," I decided to look for a relaxation CD to help me fall asleep. Because I also suffer from migraines, the word "healing" in the title of this CD intrigued me. It's still hard to believe, but for the past three months it puts me to sleep so quickly that I've never heard the end of the CD! And if I should wake up in the middle of the night I just turn it on again and fall right back asleep. Amazing!

This cd of chimes and bells is an instant avenue to relaxation and meditation. It calms, soothes and balances our chakras. I've used it for myself to meditate and realign my energies; on my staff to calm them on a hectic night at work and over the loudspeaker for the patients to hear when they got up in the morning. Works for me!.......2007-03-23

I purchased this cd because I am a nurse who varies shifts (some days, some nights)and find that my sleeping habits can get very mixed up. I have recently begun to use this cd to help me sleep during the daytime if I am working that night. It works like a charm. The music is so relaxing and soothing. There are no annoying sounds that come out of nowhere. Like it says on the cover of the cd, you will never hear the end of the cd because you are asleep! I can vouch for that. I highly recommend this cd.

Too repetative, made me want to speed up the Brahams lullaby. Just made me agitated. However my 8 yr. old daught listens to it many nights a bedtime and loves it. I like his Chakra CD much better and find it more relaxing.

Great CD For Falling Asleep.......2007-02-09

We have purchased several CDs to help us sleep, but this one is by far the best. My husband and I was able to fall asleep pretty much before the first track is finished or at most the beginning of the second track. I don't think I can even recall what the third track sounds like... It plays Brahms Lullaby in several versions (trio, duet, solo) along with some other songs, but it does it in a way that is very soothing.
I have strongly recommended the CD to other family members and my collegues.

During the first 5 minutes I told myself this is rediculous how is this going to get me to sleep?

Well after another 5 minutes I checked out and went straight to dreamland.
I woke up refreshed and full of energy. I always suffered from not being able to fall asleep, worrying about little things. The cd is great, I can't hear my own thoughts.
I'm a dj and since using this cd my ears are no longer tired and I can mix my music properly. Love it

We have had trouble with our 2 year old staying in bed. She seems to think night time is a good time to bounce off the walls :) We started playing this CD and within 2 nights she was sleeping soundly without trouble. She shares a room with her 4 year-old sister who loves the CD as well. She will ask to have it played every night. It is very soothing background music.

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? Soothing, calming and still works after 11 years!.......2007-05-09

I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.

we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.

I purchased On a Starry Night before our son was born. My husband listened to it and liked it so much that he started using it at bedtime himself. When we went into the hospital to deliver, the CD came with us. All of the nurses commented on how serene the music made our room feel. We've played it for our 2 month old son since birth. My entire family falls asleep this CD each night. It works so well, I don't know what the last few tracks sound like. This will be baby shower goft to all of my friends!!!

I can't say enough about this CD. It is great to meditate to. If you just want to take a 20 minute vacation, it is possible with the help of Steven Halpern's music and sounds then Emmett Miller's soothing voice on this CD. Highly recommended!

The best I've ever encountered.......2006-07-01

This CD is the best I've ever encountered as far as relaxation CD's go. The first time I listened to Autogenic Stress Relief I was scared of feeling relaxed (because I don't know how to relax). The second time I was used to the process and it was wonderful. I can't brag on this CD enough. I can concentrate, I can focus, and I don't worry about things as much.

Beautiful Guided Imagery and Music.......2006-06-25

Emmitt Miller leads you thru four different relaxation sessions, each about 20 min. in length. His voice is very soothing and the background music is perfectly in tune with the guided imagery. The music is performed by Steven Halpern. I agree with the previous reviewer that the trip to the beach is the best one on the CD, but the others area very good too. You can use in the middle of the day or before going to sleep to aid in relaxation. Very much worth the money for this CD.

The Ultimate Relaxation.......2005-02-27

I have been enjoying the use of this tape for many years. It has four separate 20 minute relaxation sessions on it. Some have muscle tension progressive relaxation exercises, which are fantastic. But my favorite session is "A Trip to The Beach." It is a guided imagery session that relaxes you, takes you on a trip to the beach, and guides you in seeing your body as healthy and strong. You can use this tape for an afternoon relaxation session, or you can use it as you go to sleep at night. Even though it will bring you "up" at the end, I have never had a problem just sleeping soundly through it when it is bedtime. Steven Halpern has more than 60 recordings in circulation, including audio projects ostensibly designed to enhance memory, wealth, and weight loss. He even has his own trademarked slogan--the Halpern Effect(tm)! (Take that, Mozart.) Thus, it's easy to view Halpern's high-volume output since 1975 less as art and more like a commodity. Gifts of the Angels, a 68-minute compilation (sampling eight albums and adding two original pieces), offers a few nuggets that suggest Halpern's music at times can stand on its own merits, detached from all of its deep-bliss, New Age pretensions. "Celestial Prophecy," is a nicely detailed (which is not to say complex) excursion on solo piano that briefly stirs the senses, and the title track from Higher Ground is a delicate space-music standout. Meanwhile, the 1970s-flashback tonality of Halpern's electric piano (one piece, "Earthrise," can be traced to Halpern's debut release, Spectrum Suite) dates several of the tracks included here. Nevertheless, the disc's pace, which drifts deeper into the ether on each of the last five tracks, is nicely constructed for those aiming to nod off into a state of contented nothingness. --Terry Wood

As a massage therapist, this is the ONLY CD I have used consistently in my practice over the past TEN years. There is something about this particular CD that I absolutely love and that has not been duplicated in other CDs I have used (literally hundreds!) Steven Halpern comes up with awesome music! I have many of his other CDs as well, but NOTHING comes close to "Gifts of the Angels". I am now using my 3rd copy and will buy another when this one is worn out. Many of my clients ASK me to use it in their massage sessions and ask me where to find Halpern's music. Superb.

When much of modern day's rock music and the civilization's pressure on people's lifestyle has a stressful and bad influence on the well being Steven Halpern's music is a blessing. The Godfather and inventor of the New Age music that has a healing and relaxing purpose makes music that puts the body in it's own rhythm and leads into a state of balance and inner peace. Gifts of Angels does all this, but adds an extra dimension with its beautiful angel song, making this an absolute world class New Age album. The music puts the brain waves in an alpha state and sometimes my heartbeat even gets down to 40 beats per minute, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation at the same time as its get me ready to meet my everyday life as a more balanced and happier human being. To have the opportunity to lie down and do nothing, just listen to this beautiful music, and let it fill your entire body with peace and comfort is a luxury that I think every human being should have the opportunity to do and that everybody needs to do once in a while. Unfortunately many people don't have the knowledge about New Age and the way it helps us to a better life. Bands like Rush, Journey and Def Leppard gives us the rush and entertainment that we need to be energetic while going to the gym or driving the car fast on a sunny summer day. I did not expect this but I was really buying this for myself, turns out my daughter likes this at night so she can fall asleep. My daughter is 4 and very active, she never seems to know when to rest and relax.
I decided to play this one night just to ease the mood of the night and she was asleep by the 4th song. We play this cd every night. thank!, you thank!, you thank you!

I love this cd because now I can have her go to sleep at a time that is normal for her age instead of an adult time.

Outstanding CD.......2007-06-05

I can't say enough about this CD. It is great to meditate to. If you just want to take a 20 minute nap, it is possible with the help of Steven Halpern's music and sounds on this CD. I have it uploaded to my iPod and on a difficult migraine night I just pop the ear peices in and go to sleep listening to this over and over again on shuffle. Highly recommended!

Effortless Relaxation.......2007-03-11

This is a very relaxing CD. My husband and I play it while we are working outside or relaxing in the lanai and it fits perfectly with the nature sounds around us (birds). We also use it for background music when friends are over. Everyone enjoys it and wants to know what it is. It would be a great tape to play in the quiet of the evening to fall asleep to, or to play in a guests room for a relaxing ambiance. It is very well spent money. Thank you, Steven

I really enjoy every Cd from Steven Halpern, but this one is really my favorite. It always helps me relax and I use it a lot to drift off into a restfull sleep. I put my MP3 on shuffle because I always fell asleep and never remembered hearing the end of the CD. I would highly recommend this for relaxation. It really melts away the stresses of the day.

Dr. Halpern's talents shine on this CD. I had many relaxation CD's, but after hearing this one, I threw away all but this one. Everyone needs relaxation for good health. This CD is the best of the best!

Earthsongs is a curious title for an album that is unrooted in the firmament and seems far removed from any traditions therein. Instead, the duo of Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland make music lost in a gauzy haze of nostalgia and sentimentality. On Earthsongs, they move further from the safely exotic, Celtic-meets-New-Age sound in which they forged their early successes and float down an easy-listening path. Celtic flavors do turn up on a pair of sanitized jigs: "Reel" and "Daughters of Erin," but they have the authenticity of a theme restaurant. Bringing in pop-classical tenor Russell Watson for the maudlin ballad "Always There" doesn't help. With this album, Secret Garden takes a seat in the faux-classical lounge, a room occupied by artists like Percy Faith, Bert Kaempfert, 101 Strings, and other forgotten meisters of orchestral pop who were washed aside by the breaking waves of rock in the early '60s. --John Diliberto

Potential buyer should, like so many had said, get the imported version that has "Silence Speaks". In my opinion, "Silence Speaks" and "Searching For The Past" are two of the most beautiful song tracks on this CD (they balance each other well too - being one heavy on violin and the other on keyboard).

Overall, I found this to be a great music CD. Tracks are well balanced between Secret Garden's signature melodies and other, for lack of words, new age styles/fusion(i.e. Celtic). I do wish their future releases include more of their signature melodies though.

I am a long-time fan of Secret Garden and eagerly awaited the release of this CD. After reading the reviews, though, I was hesitant to spend the money. I just received this CD and I'm sorry I put off buying it for so long. Yes, the music is different from their previous releases, but it shows their growth and willingness to try different things. If you listen to all their albums in order, Earthsongs provides a refreshing change, and you will hear how they have grown over the years. Whether they continue to explore and evolve on the path they have started with Earthsongs, or go back to their previous sound, I will still buy and continue to be a fan. I will always love their music!! (I gave this CD 4 stars because White Stones and Once in a Red Moon are still my favorites)

I've read other reviews touting the CD as to pat and not up to snuff. I've found it otherwise--the music is varied--not all Celtic, but that is refreshing to me, as are the vocals. For guitarists, really, and even then..........2007-06-18

Moments of brilliance, (yes, even genius, on this album), but over all it's a disjointed effort. You will listen to this, if you're a guitar player, and be inspired; but you'll find that inspiration fully realized in Kaki King and Don Ross, not on this CD. To be fair to Hedges, he died too early to do that for himself, but I still doubt he would have achieved the perfection of Everybody Loves You or Passion Session. He was just one of those guys who is hell bent on pushing that envelope, and it was kind of fitting he drove off a cliff one night.

Aerial Boundaries -- An Acoustic Masterpiece.......2007-01-03

Rarely do I find an acoustic artist so gifted as to make a guitar do what it supposed to do: convey imagery without lyrical content, or imply a feeling found nowhere else. This is exactly what Michael Hedges has done in "Aerial Boundaries." Mr. Hedges uses his guitar in what was, to my recollection, the first use of percussive slap harmonic technique I have ever heard. There are more recent artists who currently employ this technique, but I believe Mr. Hedges was the first to do so.

Mr. Hedges was a unique talent whose life was cut short too early in his career, but for the few recordings that Mr. Hedges produced, this is his most recognizable and more debatably, his best. I cannot personally think of another acoustic recording of any other artist that comes close to what Mr. Hedges has accomplished.

I will not described individual songs, as there are some better than others, but the recording "Aerial Boundaries" is best taken by listening to it in its entirety. This is the genius of Michael Hedges; revel in it, be absorbed by it and take it to heart. It is a learning tool for any acoustic guitarist who seeks to find originality, and a marvel to any non-musician who asks himself "How did Mr. Hedges coax the sounds out of his guitar the way he did?"

Prepare to be amazed, delighted, and bewildered by the unique talent known as Michael Hedges in "Aerial Boundaries."

Michael Hedges was an unbelievable guitar player and performer. This is a good cd but, if you are interested in this artist, you are in the wrong place.

Although Hedges is awesome, and there is good stuff here, it is nonetheless a Windam Hill new age album. This is like having a sports car stuck in your garage...there is not enough space to see what this baby/artist can do.

Hedges "live on a double planet" cd or, even better yet, the live Windham Hill dvd is a much better representation of this terrific and unique artist.

"Aerial Boundaries" is boring compared to the other works
