By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out of the bland smoothness that typified the conductor's later recordings of this music (and just about everything else). In 20 years, music notation software with masterful samples will sound exactly like this: the most perfect and beautiful sounds a computer can generate. These performances are soulless.
Give me Bernstein/VPO or Solti/Chicago any day over this rubbish.

I was most pleasantly surprised to discover that the sound quality is phenomenal for a 1963 recording, it is better than more recent ADD records. The sound engineering is also very good, it is like having the full orchestra play for you in youor living room. The deep notes of the double basses go right through you while the violins tease your ears in a most pleasent way. So, the sound quality is just great.
I also would like to talk about the CD design, which is something very important for me. I know it is strange but I like to own CDs that have good design. Of course the included material is a lot more important but... Anyway, there are two CD cases with the first one including the first 6 symphonies on 3 CDs, and the other presenting the remaining three on 2 CDs, with the last CD contains the 9th. CDs have mirror surface with the classic DG logo and the contents are listed on the CD itself as well as the booklet. The booklet offers a good read on the 9 symphonies and the cycle presented with the set.
I hope you will enjoy the set as much as I do...

symphonies feel a bit rushed in my view, the tempo seems just a
little fast. Other than that, this is an excellent set of
Beethoven's 9 symphonies, well worth it.

Thousands of analogue and digital discs later, I again purchased the same 5th and eight others on this CD set.
Karajan lived through the eternal dilemma of the all artists who came after the great predecessors.
At his last Saltsburg Festival, after conducted "Don Giovanni"He said to his wife,
"Furtwangler would have said it wasn't all that great."
She consoled the Maestro,
"It was! It was!"
Karajan had a life long struggle with legacy of Furtwangler and was not too sure if he won.
Well, his style and interpretations are definitely non-Furtwangler, or to more precisely put non-German.
It seems to me that Karajan tried to avoid playing Beethoven's music in conjunction with German culture and spirituality.
Whether his attempt was successful one or not, has been a topic of many music critics and connoisseurs.
Personally, I have a mixed feeling toward this cycle.
I like No.1, 2 and 7 very much. However, there are some flaws; for instance in the fourth movements of 5th and 9th,
cello, bass, tympani and all lower notes suddenly disappear. All you hear is the first violin all the way to coda with painfully
bright tone.(This is more obvious if you own high resolution Audiophile stereo system)
Wonder if this deletion of bass is a part of Karajan's interpretations or a fault of old analog recorder, which is incapable of
recording loud passages?
In each symphonies, the first violin is always exaggerated over other instruments. I think that is the reason why some people
call these recordings "light" Beethoven.
If you must listen to Karajan's Beethoven Symphonies, I would recommend SACD reissue, which is more expensive and bass is
still thin but tonal quality is somewhat more acceptable.
And if you want to listen to the best Beethoven cycle, do yourself a favor:
Obtain the 9 symphonies by Furtwangler.
This set is not my first choice.

This moderately priced package gives you the best of Herbert von Karajan's Tchaikovsky performances, and when he was "on" with this composer, he was very impressive indeed. My very first classical lp was Ormandy & the Mormon Tab choir doing the 1812 overture with "Russian Church Bells" and canon. I have always loved Tchaikovsky. I have recently gotten into his solo piano music and if you have never you are really missing out--Chopin esque to say the least.
I love Beethoven for the thunder and the beauty, often at the same time. Tchaikovsky comes just about as close as anyone I have heard to matching Beethoven, though not as often. These cds are a royal trip. I went for about an hour walk the other day and had them in my mp3 player and rewound the 4th movement of symphony five 3 or 4 times! The percusion from the kettles and the brass really kick butt. Karajan brings out the beauty, the power, and the glory of Tchaikovsky. I enjoy the Abbado CSO complete symphonies, but Karajan easily tops them. Symphony 4 is almost as much fun to listen to as 5. The 3rd movement of symphony 4 features ALL of the STRING instruments being plucked, not bowed, throughout the movement and when that movement ends, the fourth movement starts with thundering power. Few can weave melodies like Tchaikovsky and few can bring down the house as he can. WOW!
These symphonies are superbly played and directed and the recording is top notch. The DVD's match them for sound, but I still favor the cd over the dvd except it is interesting to watch them performed.
This 2 fer set is a great value.
Very good, but with some disappointments.......2007-02-25
In the fifth symphony, I do have a beef with the clarinetist in the first movement. It's a simple part to play, and there's really only one big mistake you can make with it -- and this clarinetist makes it. It's fine in the soft passages, but above mezzo forte, it's overblown in the chalumeaux register to the point of distorting the timbre from clarinet into klaxon horn. That's not pleasing, and in fact, is sort of "junior high school." Other than that, though, the fifth symphony is as well-done as the fourth. Particularly pleasing are the swirling rises and falls of the lyric melodies, where von Karajan has the strings and woodwinds not just playing together, but emoting together.
It's in the sixth symphony that I'm most disappointed. In certain places in the first and fourth movements, I'm tempted to say out loud to the venerable Herr von Karajan, "Uh, Herb, don't you think that's a little fast? Like, you're taking the pathos out of the Pathetique, I think." Strangely, this seems to happen every time the main subject is a legato theme in the trombones -- so consistently that I speculate that the BPO might have a problem with short-winded trombonists.
In summation: I'm glad I own it, but there are many better recordings of the Pathetique, and better clarinetists for the fifth symphony.
Much too fastly played for a true Russian flavour........2006-05-24
For the price this is going, I was convinced to have a good deal, only to be disappointed by the resultive playing. You wouldn't expect such a renowned conductor and orchestra slander through such well known classical pieces, but unfortunately, that's what you get here.
Therefore, I'd recommend taking either the Gergiev or Jansons for the 5th, while Pletnev for the 6th remains the best choice still. For the 4th, Jansons seems to be the best bet too.
But, please, do yourself a favour, and let this Russian master delight you in a better way than these recordings can offer you. You'll be thankful, I'm sure.
The best recording of von Karajan.......2006-05-08
To me his position was not on serious side of vast universe of classical music.
Not until I heard the Path?tique symphony recorded by Karajan today.
My younger brother and I were sitting with my parents in our living room watching Toshiba black & white TV set when Herbert von Karajan first visited Japan to conduct NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1950s.
They were playing Beethoven 5th, but I was too small, five or six years old then to appreciate the music.
However, I clearly remember the profound silence followed the last coda of symphony.
I suspect my mother was crying. That was how we found the German conductor.
In college, I listened to Furtwangler.
I thought Karajan was lightweight in comparison with his great predecessor.
Especially for Beethoven, his interpretations were too modern and international, sans German spirituality.
But this performance of Path?tique has changed my perception of Karajan entirely.
The energy and passion is incredible, it equals to that of Eroica symphony recorded by Furtwangler in 1944.
Simply amazing!

If you love Mozart and want to hear some beautiful works played by masters of their respective instruments(at an unbelievable price) buy this CD collection. You will love it! The sound is great too belying the age of the recordings. They sound, to me, as if they were recorded very recently. In other words, great transfers to the CD format!

Perlman's playing is wonderful. At times it seems (to my untrained ear) that he may use a bit too much vibrato (or perhaps it's just too fast), though I'm not familiar with classical violin playing conventions, so this may be the proper way. Nonetheless, his tone is still rich and full and his technique is flawless. The pianist's playing is clear and accurate, and the two musicians make a perfect team (both technically and stylistically).
I'm not quite sure how these pieces fit into Mozarts body of work (stylistically, chronologically), but to me, they seem to have a youthful energy and vibrance that I've not heard in his later clarinet works. You will really enjoy them!

Horowitz Returns to Moscow at the Age of 82.......2007-05-06
This recording of the live performance of Horowitz is superb. You will sit with your body rigid, with your hands cold and clenched, and with a smile of anticipation glued on your face, and will wait for the great maestro to play. Here you are, imagining that you are in Moscow, right there and then, and you are moved to tears by the music. What is it about the great performers that they make you breathless with the anticipation of the next note, although you know all these timeless favorites so well? In the search for an answer, I have gone so far even to read the books and articles about the biological foundation of music. I did find information about the neuronal connections and developments of various areas in the brains of the musicians. However, I did not find an explanation as to why is it that the average listener gets uplifted and enriched so much by the music when it is played by the great performers, but may be completely uninvolved when the lesser musicians play the same music. Do we have some sort of music receptors that can be triggered only by the selected few? In the absence of a scientific explanation, I have temporarily accepted that there is some sort of magic, which flows through the performer, and every soul in the concert hall. The great performers know how to make this magical connection with the average listeners. Somehow, I believe, the performer and the audience feed on each other.
I remember reading somewhere how Horowitz loved to perform. He said that he could make people in the audience hold their breath while his hand is up, in the great anticipation of his hand coming down to the keyboard. Yes, it is true; I was literally dying in the anticipation of the next note in many passages. Mr. Horowitz is a great master of passion. Just when you think that you cannot take any more passion, he tones it down, but he never lets the momentum of passion be lost.
You will love to death Horowitz's selection, each a real gem: Sonatas by Scarlatti and Mozart, Preludes by Rachmaninov, Etudes by Scriabin, Chopin Mazurkas, and much more.

The concert was held during Horowitz's first return to Moscow, and the emotion of both artist and audience seem audible. Anyhow, the playing is inspired.

Well, reader you must forgive me for my stupidity, because for some time I realize the greatness of Maestro Horowitz, and the importance of his playing in Moscow, his hometown and homeland after 60 years.
I bought this album because I remember the hoopla in 1986. I was not dissapointed. The playing is emotional and incredible. Horowitz really was an amazing piano player - the ability to hold rapture over the audience is captured here. Those fingers -connected to a difficult, sole-eating, slight, Russian man - were magic. Wow. Those beautiful notes he plays hold in the air like ripe fruit. A master at work!
This was an inspired performance by a magician on the ivories. If your wondering what the fuss was about, or you want a CD that expresses how classical music can move the soul - then I recommend this CD very highly. Along with the Three Tenors IN Concert, it just has some inherent quality to move you.
Horowitz may have made better studio recordings, and better live recordings, but I am convinced this is just a good. I join along with the gentleman who can be heard yelling "BRAVO" at the conclusion of several pieces. BRAVO!

Horowitz does things with the piano that are practically impossible to emulate or duplicate. His control over color, sound and pedalling dynamics just boggles the mind. He balances left hand right hand accents in a unique way. Horowitz reaches what is in my opinion the most technically challenging accomplishment, namely being ablt to play multiple voices simultaneously as if they all are autonomous one from the other, namely, playing three voices in which one has a crescendo, another a descrescendo and a third staying the same. I challenge any pianist to go to the piano and play 10 different level of marginal volume differences. starting from forte to pianissimo. For non musicians... this is like a shotput thrower throwing the shotput 100 times and hitting 50 feet, then 50 feet and 1/4 inches, 50 and half inches (you get this point) back and forth. This control over volume is just unparralled in the world of music. It is as if Horowitz fingers have their own brains and can do things that boggle the mind. This is akin to inducing schizophrenia in mice. There is NO ONE in the solar system who can play like this.

He conducted Mozart with real love and affection, maintaining moderate tempos, allowing each work's gorgeous melodies a chance to sing and breathe. Mozart's symphonic music has its roots in the opera house, and so did Bohm. Listening to the witty woodwind interjections in the finale of Symphony No. 39, for example, you can readily imagine the witty exchanges of different characters in one of Mozart's comic operas. Considering the age of these recordings (early- to mid-60s), they also sound remarkably clean and clear, and all of the parts can easily be heard; although I would credit Bohm with some of this as he was always excellent at creating space and keeping all of Mozart's many layers exposed to the listener. I have a number of different accounts of Mozart's last six symphonies (Marriner, Bernstein, Karajan, Szell 35, 39-41, Mackerras), but pound for pound, this one is the best. If you still aren't happy with the versions you own, this set may be your stopping point.

The Symphony No. 41 in C major Kv 551 best known as Jupiter retakes and maintains the most representative epic spirit of Mozart like any one Symphony. It breaths liberty, Dionysian pleasure and that essential rapture so common in the masterpieces. And under Bohm's baton exudates full aristocratic sound.
In spite of the fact it has been recorded so many times, just a few directors have been able to extract and carve in relief the majestic splendor of this K.
On the other hand the version of the 38th Symphony is simply majestic and radiant. Bohm never abuses of excess of elegance and his pristine lyricism may be easily realized.
Karl Bohm was indeed, one of the most representative Ambassadors of the Mozart symphonic repertoire. The Berlin Philharmonic, fortunately still maintained the noble sound inherited from Furtwangler and then Fricsay and that was a decisive fact to his favor.
Wonderful Sound Quality and Precision .......2006-03-24
As to the sound quality, Deutsch Gramophone spent extra time and resources into reissuing these originally analog recordings. It is nice to be able to hear every woodwind in balance and the string sections in their glory. The sound does not seem forced or artificial and the quality is absolutely superb.
These recordings were completed during the height of Bohm's time as a conductor. His interpretations are truly "viennese" in that tempos and structure are very precise and meticulous. Some may think his tempi are slow or plodding, but they offer a very nice interpretation that perhaps was accepted in Mozart's era. The 35th, 39th, and 41st symponies in the set are my favorites.
I would also suggest looking at George Szell's performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, for they offer a different interpretation but are also superb.

The only 2 I kept are the Walter ,got mine from a used cd dealer in the UK online :-) and the Bohm, complete sym set, which is the way to go for Mozart fans. There's quite a few very good syms in the 1-34.
All that stuff you read about Bohm being a "kapplemiester" (germanic style/cold), old fashioned, tutonic, is very misleading. I hear nothing of the sort and wish these comments would stop.
Though I was forwarned about Bohm being off track in approach with his german orch, I sense there is some anti-german sentiments in these negative comments about Bohm. None of this criticism leveled against Bohm is factual, only a prejudice in their minds.
As to
Details, tempos, instrument quality, sound quality, orch size all are in perfect harmony with Mozart.
. Bohm and the Berlin show forth a understanding of Mozart that none except Walter can rival.
The Klemper/Philharmonia on TESTAMENT, not the EMI release(which are duds) are not too bad, but not in the same category as either Bohm or Walter.
I sat down one day and compred all 3, and concluded the Klemperer were not necessary , for sound issues and also not on par with Bohm's definitive recording.
EDIT: I should mention that i read on a forum recently, he recalled Bohm from his vinyl set that the performances were 'a bit dull". Bohm does not speed read. Any conductor that takes Mozart too fast is doing a disservice to these richly detailed scores. Mozart requires detailed attention, which is what Bohm brings. Yet the life is there, not dull at all.

Mackerras' Prague is not in the same league as the Berlin. Many of the soloists in this Berlin use instruments that bring out a chamber flaor, and also Bohm kept the orch smaller than many other orch's. This smaller chamber sound brings more to Mozart than many other recodings I;'ve heard. Even Walter's Columbia is "big sound", yet Walter's does present a "Mozartian" image. Bohm goes even further. Many other like conductors record Mozart with a "Beethovenian" sound. That us large orch/heavy/darker.

But Bohm's traditional Teutonic conducting sounds pretty limited to me, not because of the "authentic" movement now in vogue but because great Mozart conducting must be joyous, light on its feet, and full of wit and alertness. Bohm is brisk and efficient instead. Bruno Walter was born even earlier than Bohm, and yet he got all those things right. That's why I return to him again and again, not to this set, much as I love the Berlin Phil.

I thought the first symphony was a bit average and dragged a little, but still very enjoyable. Beethoven's 3rd and 7th were the two symphonies I was slow in warming up to. Now I wonder what was wrong with me! Bernstein really nails the 3rd symphony! WOW! The 2nd and 5th are paired on disc two. I have always liked this pairing since the 2nd reminds me so much of number 5. I had my musical moment during symphonies 3, 2, and 5. The last movement of number five, what JOY of life! The 6th is played serenely and very beautifully.
Some Beethoven symphony performances seem to bring out the majesty of the music while others the thunder and excitement. Bernstein nails both of these features, especially in symphyony 5 and the musicians play with such warmth and joy. Don't miss the JOY in Beethoven's music. Even with his loss of hearing, Beethoven did not loose hope, nor the joy of life and this comes through with great passion in these symphonies. "The last enemy to be destroyed will be death." "katepothe ha thanatos eis nikos" Death will be swallowed up in victory.

At its best, this approach yields romantic depth, perhaps not what Mozart intended but valid in its way. I would rather listen to Bernstein's Mozart symphonies than Karajan's (tending to be slick and glossy, although better than reputed) or Bohm's (brisk and faceless). A new listener should know in advance that the slow movements will be expressively drawn out and the minuets often slow and heavy-footed (these dancers are wearing boots). But Bernstein believes in this music, and he is always genuine. That ocunts for a lot with a composer who used to be played as if he were a porcelain doll and is now too often played as if his divine music were written by a Roccoco computer. Four stars.
Mozart: The Great Late Symphonies.......2004-06-16
The reason this album is so good is Leonard Bernstein conducting. As a conductor and a musically atuned soul, he seems to really interpret these symphonies perfectly. He gets Mozart. He has captured every note, every vibrato, roulade, flowing lines and bouncy but balanced joy in every allegro movement, such as the first movement of the Prague Symphony No. 38. For contrast, he understood the substance and darkness that seems to be written into the Allegro of the Symphony No. 25. The first movement is meant to sound furious, anguished and complex, and fast in a darker sort of mood. It's one of those rare moments in which Mozart foreshadows the Romantic Era that would begin with Beethoven. Mozart would also do this with the andante of his 21st piano concerto and the opening movement of the Piano Concerto No. 20. The last symphonies 40 and 41, "Haffner" and "Jupiter" are regarded as Mozart's most mature works for the symphony. The orchestra is more panoramic and produces a less lighter texture. The music is a fully developed Mozart in his later years. The Jupiter is his grandest. Its name conjures up the vastness of the planet Jupiter or the majesty of the Roman god Jupiter. Get this album if you're a fan of Mozart and a fan of the conductor Leonard Bernstein who aptly conducted the New York Philharmonic for many years and the Berlin Philharmonic towards the end of his life.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

This performance is cohesive and the music flows naturally. Gardiner uses a lot of tempo fluctuation and rubato, but he does it naturally and doesn't force anything. He follows Elgar's tempos about half of the time, and if he doesn't, it isn't in blatant disregard. There are no variations that stand out in this bunch, and all the movements relate to each other. All too often Nimrod is given "special treatment" and as the centerpiece of many conductors' interpretations, it becomes bloated. While it was a special variation to Elgar, and Gardiner gives a little more emphasis to it, he manages to "beat the bloat" and doesn't pour syrup all over the music.
I should mention the other selections before I go any further. This was the first time I had heard 'In the South', 'Introduction and Allegro', and 'Sospiri'. In the South is, in my opinion, Elgar's best concert overture, and it has never ceased to thrill me. As another reviewer pointed out, these pieces are not just filler pieces, they are substantial works, and underperformed as well.
After listening to these works for a while, I am surprised at the distinct German style that is inherent in the recordings. The Enigma Variations here resemble Brahms more than any of Elgar's English counterparts. Likewise with In the South and its striking affinity to Strauss - a lot like Don Juan. The program notes even mentioned Sospiri resembling late Mahler in its oblique relationship between melody and harmony. It is clear that Gardiner places at least some of the music of Elgar with the late German romantics, and he chose this program as the best representation of that idea. There are a lot of links already, actually. To name two of them, the Elgars visited Bavaria several times, and Hans Richter, the well-known Brahms/Dvorak interpreter, was a good friend and conducted Elgar's works frequently. Gardiner's conducting style, his choice of collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic, and even the recording style (mentioned by another reviewer) all seem to point Elgar in the direction of German music. Whether or not it is a good choice is up to the listener, of course. In my opinion, there are drawbacks. One is that he mic placements wreak havoc on the balance. There is something else I would also like to point out that hasn't already been mentioned. The Vienna Philharmonic usually doesn't do too much English music. While they are one of the world's best orchestras and respond confidently to Gardiner's direction, they can still be intimidated. The high technical demands this music makes of them combined with the unfamiliar territory lead them to underemphasize the meticulous dynamic contrasts which Elgar wrote. Ususally the brisk passages which are marked ff and fff are underplayed, and as if to compensate for this, the lyrical passages, often marked pp or ppp, are played somewhere between p and mp, and with too much angst (the close miking only makes it worse). This can often ruin a piece, though in this case the VP doesn't do it all the time, and at the same time, they are still technically outstanding and devastatingly musical. I give them four stars. An English orchestra would probably receive 5 due to the experience. Listen to Gardiner's Holst CD with the Philharmonia and you will see what I'm talking about.
Gardiner gets four stars as well for an intelligent and thoughtful interpretation, though sometimes I might not agree with it. The sound gets two stars - bad balance and stuffiness. Overall, this is an excellent recording to which I give the benefit of the doubt (thus 4 stars instead of 3), and I highly recommend it.
