Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some amazing songs.......2006-04-27

Del Amitri doesn't disappoint with this album. Several of the songs are as amazing as anything they ever offered fans: "She's Passing This Way," "Cash & Prizes," "Buttons on My Clothes," and my favorite, "Out Falls the Past," which features some wonderful background brass.

A shame they are no longer recording...

4 out of 5 stars It did _me_ good........2005-09-10

More techno-slick than their other albums, but still unmistakably the Dels. Techno-slick is only to be scorned when it's all there is, which isn't the case here. More sharp, dead-on lyrics, melancholy reappraisal, obsession, poignant sweetness (they'd probably hate me saying that, but there it is), oh-bugger-off humor and a disgusted rant framed by those melodies, that music, and Justin Currie's voice. Not just his voice but how he uses it. It's really a bloody shame the band wasn't more successful/popular, particularly in the States. They deserved to be, as I've heard others say (one of them was Russell Crowe). My one regret is that I came to the table too late to see them play live.

Most excellent songs: "Baby It's Me," "Out Falls the Past," "Drunk in a Band," "One More Last Hurrah," "Last Cheap Shot at the Dream," "Just Getting By," "Buttons on My Clothes." As you can see, most of the album. The other songs aren't bad, either.

I'd like to know why they named the CD "Can You Do Me Good?" I have a few ideas, but they're probably nowhere near the mark...

4 out of 5 stars Never mind the samples, there are some beautiful tunes here.......2004-10-04

I don't know of that many Del fans. That doesn't stop me from being one: they're one of my favourite adult alterna (or whatever you call them) rock bands with a flair for pop hooks that I don't find in a lot of 'hot' contemporary bands. 'Can You Do Me Good'establishes that faith. 'Twisted' was a great record, and the Gibson lines come back with "Cash & Prizes"...I don't know why very few people have mentioned that track on this review firum. "Buttons on My Clothes" is another great tune. The lyrical quality of Mr. Currie's sonngs have always been, well, lyrical, for lack of a better word. It's poetry, at its best. "Jesus Saves", for one, "Just Before you Leave", for another. Get hooked.

4 out of 5 stars solid power pop from underrated artists.......2003-08-23

I finally got my copy of this long-awaited CD. I was hoping for a US release, but to no avail. Del Amitri once again prove themselves to be possibly the most underrated band ever. The band cranks it up with "Drunk in a Band," a great head-nodding pub song. The stand out track in my opinion is "Buttons on My Clothes". It ranks among their best and in a perfect world, would have been everybody's favorite song of 2002. Lyrically, Justin Currie is once again at the top of his game. The man just cannot write a lame lyric. You can always count on Del Amitri for great ballads. Here, "She's Passing This Way" and "Just Getting By" are two more great chronicles in the long and sorry love life of Mr. Currie. Songs like "One More Last Hurrah" and "Last Cheap Shot at the Dream" are somewhat prescient in their foreshadowing the band's recent split from their US label. Too bad for the masses, but not if you're willing to dig a little deeper for the truffles. Note: If you're a fan of brit-pop like Oasis, Travis and Coldplay, buy this and every other Del Amitri CD. I guarantee you those bands were listening to the Dels when they were writing.

3 out of 5 stars My Favorite Band, But Not Their Best Work.......2003-04-04

This is a good Del Amitri CD, but it lacked something that I can't quite put me finger on. I think it's that a majority of the songs are simpy good and not great (a first!). However, if you're a fan (and I wish there were more of us out there, so that the Dels wouldn't be currently without a record label) you MUST buy this, even though it costs a little bit more. If you're just a casual listener and are looking for something beyond the obvious hits collections, go buy "Changes Everything".

3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of 70s work.......2002-12-09

I discovered the beauty and power of the Walkers via a compilation of british rock acts.Well,I investigated further and heard their 60s output.I read they reformed in 1976 and put out 3 spotty records, then ended 1978.Well,here's a great CD that covers those years very well. Most of the CD is in the easy-listening/country pop vein and is very melodic and emotional. The latter part is in a more british pop(ie:Bowie)style and features a Brian Eno type soundscape("The electrician") with a spooky vocal approach by Scott.I love it.This CD also features unreleased songs from all 3 albums.Fantastic album, but folks who buy it should be familiar with Scott's solo work from the late 60s to early 70s.

5 out of 5 stars Wim at his best.......2005-08-15

I have been a big fan of Wim for many years.
I bought the box set featuring his 13 first CDs, and this is my favorite by a good margin. While Wim's music can be amazing, consistency has never been his strong point in my book.

The quality of his music varies from track to track, and album to album, but this one is very good throughout, in slow and more lively songs.

I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to experience Wim at his best, especially if you never bought any of his many albums.

4 out of 5 stars piano and voice.......2004-08-24

a GREAT cd. I know his music for a LONG time. This is one of the best. If you like this piano, buy jerimiades....

5 out of 5 stars LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST OF IN A SINGLE DISC.......2005-01-07

There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. This is the compilation Lloyd Webber personally supervised and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: This one is for the British and the European market. There is another one, issued later and digitally remastered, aimed at the American buyers and although some songs are repeated on both of them, they contain different songs or the same songs sung by different artists. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both.

So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:

        1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever.

        2. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is beautifully performed by Julie Covington, who was Evita at the 1976 concept album. She sounds like Madonna, only much better and the London philharmonics are the best orchestra ever used in this song. David Essex sings "Oh what a circus" with a strong voice, in my view, much better than Mandy Patinkin.

        3. From "Tell me on a Sunday" we have "Take that look of your face" sung by Marti Webb. This studio version blends perfectly Marti's voice and the strong back vocals.

4."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. The one here is from the London cast recording, sung by Elaine Paige. I love Elaine's version very much, but this one is not the definite one. Her best rendition of this song, with the much matured voice, can be heard in "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004.

        5. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem". Sarah Brightman is joined by a young boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston in this solemn deliverance. Very pretty.

        6. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs in their single versions. In the song of the same title, we have Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley sounding very appropriate, although my favourite will always be the one with Sarah and Michael Crawford, which can be found on the American version of this compilation. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".

        7. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.

        8. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Jason Donovan with a youthful warmness. Wonderful pop piece.

        9. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this next song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices are a perfect fit. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.

        10. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. "The perfect year" is here in its single version, sung splendidly by Dina Carroll, and it sounds much better with this orchestration than in the show on stage.

        11. As we approach the end, we have an Academy Award winner, that is, "You must love me" with Madonna, from the 1996 movie version of "Evita". This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.

        12. The last two songs are from "Whistle down the wind". The first song has the same title and it's a pop single performed by Tina Arena. She has a really strong voice and the drums and guitars here are a well made combination. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals.

All in all, this CD is a must have for all the Webber fans. It works well as the background music or on the headphones. The booklet contains some pictures and an introductory text. The sound quality is excellent. Every song here really is a pure gold.

        5 out of 5 stars Webber's best.......2002-07-05

This CD is subtitled "The Definitive Hit Singles Collection." And that it is. Eighteen tracks include the best known Webber hits. Julie Covington does "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." If you haven't heard the other side of the Evita story, you need to hear David Essex's "Oh What a Circus," an answer to "Don't Cry . . ." Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley do "The Phantom of the Opera," and Michael Crawford does "The Music of the Night." Barbra Streisand does "As if We Never Said Goodbye," Michael Ball does "Love Changes Everything," Marti Webb does "Take That Look Off Your Face," and Madonna does "You Must Love Me." The rest of the album is not filler; is top notch Webber, truly a collection of hit singles.
