About the Artist
Sara Riviera is not your usual jazz singer. She is a multicultural, multi-talented vocalist with the pipes to belt out huge blues numbers as well as the dramatic subtlety to bring her audiences to tears with a torch song. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, Sara can also bring the house down with a sizzling Brazilian samba or mournful Argentinian ballad.

With a musicologist for a mother, Sara grew up immersed music – from gospel to opera, folk to Motown – and was always singing along. She spent years in both Spain and Brazil, picking up a marvelous Latin repertoire as well as impeccable Spanish and Portuguese. Later she earned her Masters degree in World Music, specializing in cabaret.

Now Sara brings all those influences together in a unique blend of blues, jazz, and world music. In her first CD, Tangerine Blue, Sara takes listeners on a passionate musical journey with 13 exquisite songs spanning 50 years and 3 continents.

4 out of 5 stars Finally some stability.......2007-06-19

After Peter Baumann left TD for good in 1977, the band struggled, not only musically (for example, the critical and commercially unsuccessful "Cyclone" in '78) but they also struggled to keep a "regular" third member of the band.

Many session musicians came and went in '78 & '79 (Klaus Krieger, Steve Joliffe, Michael Hoenig)as the band tried to "find themselves" again.

Enter Johaness Schmoelling. Schmoelling helped breathe new life into TD's sound that brought them into the '80s. The band hearkened back to the older days with this latest release in the fact that the album contained only two tracks that each took up an entire side of an LP (or cassette - don't even get me started on 8-track!), but this time, the music was brighter and more vibrant. The new decade heralded a new Tangerine Dream with a more modern feel.

Edgar Froese's guitar is present during some passages and Chris Franke's sequencers are upbeat and aggressive. Schmoelling adds bright and warm synthesizer melodies to complement Edgar's dark and brooding ones.

This album was a turning point for TD and it proved that most of the fans were willing to follow them into the next decade and beyond...

5 out of 5 stars essential 80s TD.......2007-02-06

One of their best, this album is full of warm, classic synth sounds married with outstanding compositions. Tangram part1 in particular is one of the best analog workouts ever, featuring polyrhythmic sequences of the highest possible personality, mystery and charm. This is more structed, proper 'music' than their 70s output. Some feel that their earlier magic may be compromised by the newer structures, but here the Dream are at the peak of their powers compositionally and so I feel much is gained.
This is easily one of the best all-synthesizer albums ever made.

4 out of 5 stars A new sound.......2006-05-03

When Johannes Schmoelling was brought into the TD fold, he brought with him a sense of musicality and tunefulness that was lacking in much of TD's earlier work. Tangram does contain many of the characteristic effects and sequences that made their earlier work so noteworthy, but Schmoelling's contribution took the album to a soulful and emotionally appealing level. This made TD's sound more appealing to listeners who wanted a more visceral, organic experience. Purists will not be dismayed: this recording still retains driving synths and loops; but instead of letting these rhythms take over and dominate the album, there is a sense of cohesion that ties it all up very neatly. It's a beautiful album, and for a person just jumping onto the TD train, a nice introduction to this important band. It is not mainstream, and, like a lot of TD's work, will take some getting into. Yet, if the listener is willing to hang in there, (he) will find this album appealing, innovative and facinating.

4 out of 5 stars Too Incomplete to be called "Definitive".......2006-01-23

I'm not even sure how the definitive edition differs from the original version, they both sound the same to me. I think they missed a golden opportunity by not adding an extra track which I believe was recorded for the album. It was a pretty awesome prelude simply titled "Intro" and it only appears on an out-of-print LP from a small record label called Crescendo Records. If ANYBODY out there knows where I can obtain that track on CD (or anything by Michael Garrison who was another synth pioneer) please contact me!!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, brooding bookend to their 1970s output........2006-01-16

Released in 1980, Tangram marked the beginning of the Johannes Schmoelling period and ushered Tangerine Dream forward into the new decade, while simultaneously glancing backwards at the 1970s. Although the synth tone colors used on Tangram are "newer sounding" than the brooding mellotron and synthesizers used on their 1970s works, they are still very somber and organic sounding and impart a gloominess to the album that I find very appealing. The album consists of two lengthy pieces including Tangram Set 1 (19'51") and Tangram Set 2 (20'22"), which are fairly interesting and feature the spacey sections and trademark pulsating sequenced synth bass lines that were characteristic of their late 1970s output. Instrumentation consists predominantly of Moog and Oberheim synthesizers, some string synthesizer, with acoustic and electric guitar parts here and there. Percussion is absent. All in all, this is an excellent Tangerine Dream album and forms a nice bookend to their 1970s recordings. I guess that my only complaint is with the shoddy CD reissue packaging, which features a thin paper insert without a single liner note apart from the track listing. Otherwise, this is highly recommended along with all of their albums from 1970-1979 (yes, Cyclone too!).

1 out of 5 stars A less-than-brilliant 'best of' release.......2000-06-01

This is a reasonable survey of Tangerine Dream's albums "Le Parc" and "Underwater Sunlight", with some chunks of "Poland", "Tyger" and "Livemiles" thrown in. It doesn't contain enough of any of these albums to be worth having, though, nor is it sufficiently representative (especially of "Poland" or "Tyger") to be a useful way of finding out whether or not the full albums are worth having! Personally, I'd recommend putting the money towards copies of "Livemiles" and "Poland", if you don't have those. Or, if you're interested in the "Tyger", "Le Parc" and "Underwater Sunlight" tracks, go for the 5-CD "Dream Roots Collection" instead. It is more expensive, obviously, but it has a better mix of tracks than here, (from the same albums) and has some otherwise unavailable tracks on it too.

5 out of 5 stars Tangerine Blue Review: We Want More!.......2003-01-06

We thoroughly enjoy the music and are still discovering new sounds, phrasings, colors and emotions in these songs. Sara Riviera has a wondeful voice which breathes new life and energy into these selections. Without hesitation, we highly recommend this cd and look forward to hearing more from this bright new artist.

1 out of 5 stars Please Don't buy this CD.......2002-11-26

All I could hear was a woman trying (not Sucessfully) to sing. Her voice is strained, manufactured, and without any emotion whatsoever. No heart, no soul

5 out of 5 stars Tangerine Blue.......2001-05-21

I bought this cd a couple months ago and it just keeps getting better! The song mix is diverse and eclectic, combining jazz standards and blues with gorgeous brazilian ballads and some rarely heard gems. Sara's soaring range, brilliant phrasing and passionate interpretaions bring new life to familiar classics and turn unfamiliar tunes into old friends.

5 out of 5 stars Eclictic tour.......2001-04-09

From Brazil, through Argentina, to A USA cabaret with detours to Russia and the American midwest Ms. Riviera's superb, clear voice, fleawless execution, great range, burning passion and sense of humor takes the listener on a great musical adventure. Excellent back-up wraps the package.

4 out of 5 stars great sound quality.......2001-03-19

I thought my cd player was (...) until I heard this cd. Crystal clear - like I'm in the room with the musicians. And it's lots of fun too. I especially like the song about brazil, "Aquarela do Brazil".

3 out of 5 stars Vol 1 of an OK compilation.......2000-07-05

There are different kinds of fans of Tangerine Dream music, so to understand my reviews, you must understand my tastes. I prefer their later works, with songs that are harmonious, rhythmic, lyrical, and "pretty." Their first excellent album for me was Underwater Sunlight. You might find (by reading lots of reviews) that the people who love TDream's early work dislike the later albums; people who like the later albums don't like the early stuff. I am the 2nd type. Of my 22 or so TDream albums so far, the greatest ones (in approximate order) are: Le Parc, Underwater Sunlight, Architecture in Motion, Private Music, Goblins' Club, Optical Race, Melrose, Lily on the Beach. OK albums are: Tang-go, Force Majeure, Exit. Unpleasant albums are: Turn of the Tides, Rockoon, Stratosfear, Phaedra, Atem, Alpha Centauri, Elect. Meditation, or anything else pre '83. This is actually Volume 1, and there will be a Blue Years, Volume 2. If you have Le Parc, and Underwater Sunlight, you have the best part of this compilation. There are 3 other tunes, but they don't catch my ear. I would STRONGLY recommend getting Le Parc and Underwater Sunlight, instead of this album. Le Parc has lots more great songs besides these. But any album that has Scuba Scuba on it I cannot pan much.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointing collection!.......2000-06-13

There are endless numbers of 'Best of Tangerine Dream' collections; selecting between them is often difficult and invariably confusing. It is not helped by the fact that the band has been contracted to so many different record companies over the years. Each label naturally feels it necessary to keep repackaging THEIR material as the best! Castle Communications/Essential Music has the rights to the band's output during two of their main periods: the "Pink Years" refers to their early 1970's pre-Virgin era, and covers the albums "Electronic Meditation", "Alpha Centauri", "Zeit", "Atem" and "Green Desert". The "Blue Years" covers the band's output immediately after their period with Virgin Records, when they signed with the now-defunct Jive Electro label.

Tangerine Dream's "Blue Years" cover the band's output from the live "Poland" double-album of 1984, through to Chris Franke's farewell concert with the band in 1988, released on the "Live Miles" album. Also included are the three studio albums "Le Parc", "Underwater Sunlight" and "Tyger". The "Best of Tangerine Dream: Blue Years" collection has bleeding chunk extracts of 'Horizon' from "Poland" and 'Livemiles: the Albuquerque concert', and a couple of tracks from each of the other albums, but the selection is poor and hardly representative. Go for the "Dream Roots" collection instead, if you can afford it - much better value.
