This deserves a spot on any soul/funk fan's shelf. I had Umbagarrauma on a complilation CD and wanted to hear more. I am familiar with other Brazilian styles and the unrelated Rock en Espanol styles but this one is the king. You can party to it, work out, or just groove to this man's genius in your car. I went through the Starbuck's drive through and the kid said,"who is that." Who says the best funk n soul comes out of America? Buy it you won't regret it.

Jorge Ben's sleek vocals and wah-wah funk style applied to samba, latin rhythms and afro-percussion are summary contained in this great album. I, a brazilian fan of black music, do believe in a 'world black music' whose universal conscious jazz also stated long ago, so that now is cheerfully expressed in multicolored palletes of percussions and blues. Jorge Ben also felt the groove as well as Curtis Mayfield did in USA: as Mayfield went through a protestant education, what means 'soul music' in his veins (like Marvin Gaye for example), nevertheless Ben's style is more softly, catholic as old samba can be but wicked as it can be too.

Musically gorgeous and unique, great rhythm, Jorge's voice is amazing, the album has a lot of musical depth, is uplifting, tropical. It's an amazing work of his!

Bumpin' Brazil.......2003-04-12

...So I throw this thing in my CD player for the first time and instantly I say to myself "I have NO idea what this guy is saying--but Damn! is this funky."

From the ridiculous, syncopated funk of "Ponta de la Africano (Ummbabarumba)" right into the bubbling bassline intro to track #2 "Hermes..." this things from Brazil straight cooks, man.

I'm not exactly a stranger to Brazilian soul music. But if you are, this is a sweet starting point. Best way to sum it up is a cross-pollination of latin smoke, jb funk, island rhythms and African stylings.

The funk flew outta of Brazil in the 70's so if you ain't hip and you're not sure, start with this Jorge Ben album and keep diggin...

- just a nice album. One other guy said it well, a "Sunday Morning" type, perhaps - - - not a big deal, but nice.
Another nice addition is her "live from the Blue Note" -- also very unspectatular, yet, with some really neat chord changes (guitar) and what I'd call semi-delicious, okay?

Gal Costa,one of Brazil's greatest female vocalists released this album in 1980 as a tribute to Brazilian songwriter Ary Barroso.The product was an interesting and refreshing collection of 1940-1950 classics that were born again in Costa's unusual voice.Check out E LUXO SO and the duet with Caetano Veloso,NO TABULEIRO DA BAIANA.The ballad TU and the danceable FACEIRA only boast Gal's ability to perform a wide array of genres.

Ary Barroso was one the great traditional composers in Brazil. His only international reference is his song "Brazil" as recorded by Frank Sinatra besides Carmen Miranda's renditions of some of his songs.

So this is an Ary Barroso songbook album.

Features Caetano Veloso on "No Tabuleiro da Baiana" in a delicious duet with Ms. Costa.

Overall, you'll hear Gal Costa in her cool performances of Barroso's material. No brilliant arrangements to feature.

Gal Costa is blessed with a voice that at once soothes, energizes and pleases in a lyrically tuneful way. It's no wonder she is so popular. This recording is a collection of lovely and lush songs, a perfect accompaniment for a sunny Sunday or to brighten up a cloudy morning. Even on the faster, brassier numbers like the first cut, E Luxo So, Costa massages you with her breathy seductiveness. Perhaps not as brilliant as the great samba masters, this is nonetheless a prize of a recording that my wife and I have enjoyed many times, while sipping coffee and reading magazines, etc. It never fails to please, even after repeated listening. An excellent purchase.

There seem to be a lot of greatest hits collection of Sergio Mendes that frankly aren't ... but this qualifies. If you love old school 60's bossa nova-fun trip hop-easy listening and sunny pop, this is a great collection - these are really their greatest hits ... though the 2-disc "Very Best of Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 [IMPORT]" (also from Amazon) also contains all these tracks plus another 20 or more tracks so if you love Sergio, that is an even better deal!

A Very Good Sequel - Worth the purchase.......2001-08-06

I stumbled upon the second one at the record store this weekend (sorry ...) just before giving up the hope of finding it in person. This is a terrific CD. The DJ's mixing Bossa Nova titles and Brazilian music in general accompanied by live musicians is quite the thing these days.

The first reviewer was correct in that this cd definitely feels jazzier than the first one. There is far more instrumentation, and all in all some of the tracks are longer. Terrific music, terrific sounds and great if this is what you are listening to on the way to the classy latin night club. This is a great CD - the hardest part is to compare it to another, other than the first cd that came out. If you like the sound of BossaCucaNova's O Barquinho or some of their newer work from Brasilidade, you may like this one. However it differs from BossaCucaNova in that it's jazzier!

After the great first edition of Trip Do Brasil, the sequel, V.2, will again get everybody addicted who likes Brasilian-style vibes mixed eletronically. This one is jazzier and worth a front space in your record shelf (maybe right next to V.1).

If there is one fantastic quality in Maria de Medeiros is her capacity of surprising her "admirateurs". The actress, the movie star, the writer, the film director is now the charming voice in very sophisticated versions, a little jazzy, of wellknown brazillian songs. Besides this, she is surrounded by the right musicians, really a good trio. To be honest and thinking of drinks, this is a mix of an iced caipirinha, topped by the rich portuguese red wine and, why not, by a flûte of a good champagne brut frappé.

Primal Roots-A Splended Sonic Experience.......2002-12-11

This cd blends both Brazilian and African-American Roots into one musical form. The songs are splendid and the sound of this cd puts most American product to shame. Again Gracinha Leporace shines throughout. She is Mrs Sergio Mendes but has nothing to apologize for. Her credentials are solid and the entire ensemble has opportunities to stretch, especially in the course of the cd's magnum opus The Circle Game. Special thanks to Japan for including the bonus cut The Crab.

I'm not a big Sergio Mendes fan, BUT..........2002-08-31

This 1972 release was Mendes' big "I can, too, play traditional!" album... and, boy, could he! A thunderous, kaleidoscopically produced sound with some killer Afro-Brazilian percussion. If you don't want to fool around with the lite pop stuff, but are still wondering what all the fuss was about, then try this one out. (Issued as "Raizes" in Brazil)

Not quite a 5 star album, but some beautiful moments.......2005-12-31

A lot of long-time Brasil '66 fans dismiss this album as the "beginning of the end" of the classic era for Sergio Mendes, but it's always been one of my favorites. True, the album only has one Brasilian tune (but it's a killer--"Ye Me Le", with an incredible flute solo by Hermeto Pascoal and guest vocals by the soon-to-be Mrs. Mendes, Gracinha Leporace), and tends to concentrate more on the American pop side of things ("Wichita Lineman," "Easy to Be Hard"), but there is still sufficient magic that any fan of the early Brasil '66 albums should find it more than sufficient. Sergio's reworking of "Norwegian Wood," with its changing tempi and beautiful Rhodes solo; Lani's playful reading of the jazz waltz "Some Time Ago"; Lani's heartfelt belting on the Marcos Valle penned "Look Who's Mine" (with one of those patented Alan & Marilyn Bergman lyrics); Lani and Karen Philipp tearing into Bobby Timmons' classic "Moanin'" with a great Dave Grusin big band arrangement (this is not your mother's Lambert, Hendricks and Ross interpretation); and the magnificent Dave Grusin orchestral wrapping of an almost McCoy Tyner-ish arrangement of "What the World Needs Now" are just some of the great things listeners have in store on this neglected gem. It may not be "Fool on the Hill," but I for one highly recommend it.

I gave this album a four-star rating because one or two of the songs aren't great, but overall, it's very good. Sergio had a way of taking hits and making them even better. Witchita Lineman and Norwegian Wood are a couple of examples. If you are a fan of his earlier work, you should be pleased with this.
By the way, why is it that it takes a Japanese company to produce many of these old A & M albums?
