The ultimate blues and boogie band!.......2006-10-27
Just like there's no mistaking Simmonds' guitar, the same can be said for Chris Youlden's voice. And this two LP combo on one CD gives you a few of Savoy's best tracks.
First, I think 'Tell Mama' is one of my all-time favorite songs PERIOD! Here it is from the Street Corner Talking release. 'Let It Rock' is another goodie. 'Can't Get Next To You' is a Motown ditty that's been redone a time or two by different folks. I think Rare Earth did a great job on it, but Savoy Brown does a darned fine job, as well.
'Troubled By These Days And Times' and 'If I Could See n End'... Hmmm. Prophetic titles, eh? (Hockey term)
'Wang Dang Doodle' is spectazmagoric! I made that up, but I think you get the idea.
But to round out the whole thing is the epic tale of the 'Hellbound Train.'
"I'm goin down the road on the hellbound train. Take a last look baby 'cause you won't see me again."
What to expect? Very good guitar. Unique vocals. What I classify as psychedelic blues. Extended jams to showcase Simmonds talent.
What not to expect? Mainstream, Clapton/King blues. Foghat-esque boogie. Two or three minute songs. Can't tell a good story in that length of time!
When you get tired of hearing the various 'new' bands who sound the same vocally or sound the same as far as guitar is concerned, etc., just grab any of the early Savoy Brown albums - this pair is a great place to start!

Customer Reviews:
When does listening to Doo Wop not make you feel better?.......2005-05-05
Actually, while all of these albums are done in the Doo Wop style of four-part harmony, very few of them were originally considered Doo Wop songs (e.g., "Sh-Boom" and "Blue Moon"). Yet you will be hard pressed to remember that songs like "Fools Fall in Love," "Teenager in Love," and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," were not always considered Doo Wop songs once you hear them done by the Mighty Echoes. "Monster Mash" is a prime example of a song that you could well like a lot better than the original, while "Remember When" and "What Time Is It?" are other candidates as well. As you would expect, this is a fun album, and if you are like me you can pick and choose which of the four vocal parts you can try and sing along with (I can never stick with one for long and usually end up touching on all four by the time the song is done). The Mighty Echoes also push the envelope a bit in terms of the Doo Wop style on songs like "Do You Love Me," where the lead vocalist goes off of his own a bit more.
The Mighty Echoes been performing since 1986 and the current line up for the group consists of bass Charles Davis, tenor John Lathan, high tenor Jon Rubin, and baritone Harvey Shield. "Doo Wop Til You Drop" is apparently a re-released of the group's third album, "A Cappella Doo-Wop, Vol. 2," which was originally released on Primarily A Cappella. Hopefully the move to a new label will result in their other albums getting a second chance with a bigger audience as well. If you have enjoyed the Doo Wop style for a long time, and it is not exactly a musical approach that is continuing to gain fans today, then you will want to check out this album.

Customer Reviews:
The "new" best VW Symphony 8.......2003-01-03
That this recording is by Barbirolli should not be too much of a surprise, as he was in fact the symphony's dedicatee, and a favorite conductor of Vaughan Williams himself. There is a natural rapport between the two, which allows Barbirolli to go beneath the surface of the music, and find the deeper meanings not at first evident on the page.
The first movement of the symphony is stately in its grandeur, like other recordings, yet even at its triumphant climax, the music still feels somewhat restrained. This same sense of foreboding--which Vaughan Williams himself pointed out when asked about the symphony--lasts through the defiant Scherzo for brass instruments, and the heartwearming Cavatina for strings, until the very final moments of the concluding Toccata. Even here, Barbirolli manages to make the collection of "all the 'phones and 'spiels known to the composer" even more lively and prominent than does Haitink or his other rivals. However, compared to other recordings, the final bars of this performance hold one more surprising detail, which confirms that the symphony is in fact in a minor key and also supports the idea that there's something deeper than the "Turandot"-inspired tintinnabulation. All in all, a tour de force. [Listen to this recording, and the endings of all other performances will seem like a cop-out.]
There's much more to this disc than the Eighth Symphony, and happily most of it is on the same inspired level. The Rawsthorne and Bax works are new to me, but very welcome additions to my collection. I also enjoyed the Delius, and while Walton's "Crown Imperial" is fervently played, the orchestral ensemble is not quite what it could be. And, while I'm glad to have another recording of Kathleen Ferrier, the recording of "Land of Hope and Glory" does have a lot of background noise to filter out. Without the liner notes, one would have thought that "Land" was recorded in the mid-1930's, not the early 1950's. [All the other works were recorded between 1967 and 1969, and are in perfectly good sound.]
This disc is a must-have for Barbirolli enthusiasts, RVW fans, and anyone interested in hearing British music in a non-pastoral vein. . . .
