This collection features three previously unreleased tracks, but they're beside the point. More importantly what is here are the sickly sweet vocals of Karen Carpenter, the lush '70s style production that's as hip as a wood-paneled station wagon or a wide-lapel polyester leisure suit, and songs that immediately stir up memories of the dentist office's waiting room. It doesn't feature all the hits, but "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Superstar," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (a bizarre late-take on psychedelia) are illustrative of Richard and Karen's abilities to make substantial pop-lite. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Just for Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again .......2007-03-08
Also, if you aren't a huge fan but want many of their best recordings in one place, this is a great place to start.
"Interpretations" has little "New" Material.......2005-08-05
Is it worth the asking price for three additional songs? Each buyer will have to decide that for himself/herself. The fact that these songs were never included on previous albums says something about their quality as perceived by Richard and Karen Carpenter.
As big a fan as I am of the Carpenters, my reluctant advice is to skip this album.

Intrupretating Interpretations............2004-11-25
It's Easy To Miss The Point On This One.......2004-02-25
The treasure here is "Trying To Get The Feeling Again." This is Karen at her rawest. Her vocal lead is allowed to "dry" giving her an edge not associated with her smooth sound. She could "sight read," the turning of the lyric sheet is a strong indicatior of this. Listing to this track almost makes you feel like you're at the recording session or better, listening to a demo as a friend would, the artist later asking fo an opinion or input on the track before it's finished. How intimate is that?
"From This Moment On" is Karen recorded on a mono audio track, Richard would later re-record his concert grand in stereo. This song is from the soundtrack to the 1980 television special "Music, Music, Music." Prior to this version, the song was performed live on "The Tonight Show" and various concerts.
The import version of "Interpretations" contain remixed album tracks and two ballads from "Lovelines." "Sing," "Desperado," and "Please Mr. Postman" are among the remixes, "You're The One," and "Where Do I Go From Here" are the two ballads from "Lovelines." Interesting to note that while this album was a collection of covers, two excellent tracks, "Baby It's You" and "I Just Fall In Love Again" weren't used. A lot of people feel, that despite Richard's comments in the liner notes abount the late discovery of "Trying To Get The Feeling Again," that this album was created to make that song a centerpiece and to "spoon feed" his audience with unreleased recordings. Whatever the reason, the theme of this album is indeed their cover work, which stands to honor the songwriters by their words being given such a beautiful voice.
Happy to be proved wrong.......2002-06-23
I love this album. It includes so many terrific songs that bring back memories. [We started listening to The Carpenters on our honeymoon ...]
Some interesting tracks:
From This Moment On features an interpolation of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier Book 1, Prelude no 2 into Cole Porter!
Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is an excellent version of the Klaatu original. [And some people still think it really is the theme song of World Contact Day!]
The A Cappella version of Without a Song
The songs have been thoughtfully put together to create a great program. Highly recommended.

a timely , definitive tribute!.......1999-11-29
just when you thought nobody could finesse "dancing queen", comes anni frid lyngstad's a capella version. this makes coco lee's version (on the same album) pale, almost literally, by comparison. other tracks worth an average abba fan's time are e-rotic's take on "money, money, money", never a personal fave but its rave beat gives what was originally a schlager flavored tune a new twist, erasure's "take a chance on me", chicago's peter cetera on "s.o.s", a kitsched up version of "hasta manana" by army of lovers and a sparse, minimalist but effective irma on "the name of the game".
I AM A BIG ABBA FAN!..& I am not too thrilled with this CD.......1999-10-16

Customer Reviews:
Eclectic but mellow collection.......2004-09-10
The set opens with the Roches' distinctive cover of Deck the halls, not as upbeat as I'm used to hearing it, but it works well. Next comes the much under-rated Nicolette Larson with Christmas is a time for give. The title track is an original song by Everything but the girl, the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Carrie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of the famous Beach Boy, Brian Wilson) do a fine version of Let it snow. Pat Benatar is in top form doing a bluesy version of Please come home for Christmas. Kim Carnes does a fine mid-tempo cover of Run run Rudolph. The remaining tracks all feature country singers except Karla Bonoff, brilliant on Everybody's home tonight. Of the country acts, my favorite is Highway 101, with Paulette Carlson, providing a superb version of the under-recorded It came upon the midnight clear. Holly Dunn, Juice Newton are also in peak form on their songs. The album closes with the relatively unknown McCarters (a folk-country trio) singing Noel.
Some but not all of these tracks can be found elsewhere. If you are looking for a mellow but eclectic Christmas album, this will suit you - if you can find it.
