5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02

Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

This collection features three previously unreleased tracks, but they're beside the point. More importantly what is here are the sickly sweet vocals of Karen Carpenter, the lush '70s style production that's as hip as a wood-paneled station wagon or a wide-lapel polyester leisure suit, and songs that immediately stir up memories of the dentist office's waiting room. It doesn't feature all the hits, but "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Superstar," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (a bizarre late-take on psychedelia) are illustrative of Richard and Karen's abilities to make substantial pop-lite. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Just for Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again .......2007-03-08

If you are a fan of The Carpenters, you simply must hear Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again, and as far as I know this is the least expensive way to get it. I believe it appeared first on this CD but has later been included in significanly more expensive Carpenters CD sets.

Also, if you aren't a huge fan but want many of their best recordings in one place, this is a great place to start.

3 out of 5 stars "Interpretations" has little "New" Material.......2005-08-05

Interpretations, released on the Carpenters 25th anniversary is somewhat of a disappointment to me, as it only has three "new" previously unreleased recordings, these being: "When I Fall In Love", "From This Moment On", and Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again". The rest of the songs on the album are remastered/remixed versions of previous Carpenter hits.

Is it worth the asking price for three additional songs? Each buyer will have to decide that for himself/herself. The fact that these songs were never included on previous albums says something about their quality as perceived by Richard and Karen Carpenter.

As big a fan as I am of the Carpenters, my reluctant advice is to skip this album.

5 out of 5 stars Intrupretating Interpretations............2004-11-25

I almost fell over in the store when I ran across this album. Seeing unreleased materal displayed on the front of the package yelled out a sure buy!!! I have loved the Carpenter since the late '80s, when I was introduced to them. Up 'til now, all the songes were played on my stero at lest once. I forked over my money and rushed home to listen to the new tunes. I was amazed to hear Karen turn the page in "Feeling". I thought something was wrong with my CD. I never really heard any improfections in any of the Carpenters materal. I then exchanged it and the next one did the same thing. I then refered to the liner notes to find out that the lead would have to be recorded to omit the page truning. An avid Carpenters fan would hear some differences in the remixes this time around. It is a must to have in your Carpenter's music collection!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's Easy To Miss The Point On This One.......2004-02-25

A lot of casual fans feel this album was an erstaz collection of hits, wrong. The point of this album was to pull the covers together. This is the second version, and better mastered, of this release. The first version of "Interpretations" was released with more tracks and longer liner notes in October of 1994 in England and Canada. "Without A Song" is an edited version, the original features Perry Como, John Davidson, and Ella Fitzgerald taking over the leads after the Carpenters overdubbed intro. Oddly enough, Karen and Richard recorded a version for themselves with their singing all the parts. This long version is available on "As Time Goes By."

The treasure here is "Trying To Get The Feeling Again." This is Karen at her rawest. Her vocal lead is allowed to "dry" giving her an edge not associated with her smooth sound. She could "sight read," the turning of the lyric sheet is a strong indicatior of this. Listing to this track almost makes you feel like you're at the recording session or better, listening to a demo as a friend would, the artist later asking fo an opinion or input on the track before it's finished. How intimate is that?

"From This Moment On" is Karen recorded on a mono audio track, Richard would later re-record his concert grand in stereo. This song is from the soundtrack to the 1980 television special "Music, Music, Music." Prior to this version, the song was performed live on "The Tonight Show" and various concerts.

The import version of "Interpretations" contain remixed album tracks and two ballads from "Lovelines." "Sing," "Desperado," and "Please Mr. Postman" are among the remixes, "You're The One," and "Where Do I Go From Here" are the two ballads from "Lovelines." Interesting to note that while this album was a collection of covers, two excellent tracks, "Baby It's You" and "I Just Fall In Love Again" weren't used. A lot of people feel, that despite Richard's comments in the liner notes abount the late discovery of "Trying To Get The Feeling Again," that this album was created to make that song a centerpiece and to "spoon feed" his audience with unreleased recordings. Whatever the reason, the theme of this album is indeed their cover work, which stands to honor the songwriters by their words being given such a beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Happy to be proved wrong.......2002-06-23

I have a distrust of remastering and remixing. So often, something is lost in the process. I hesitated to try Richard Carpenter's remixed tracks for years. But, boy, was I wrong! He has done his task professionally, and has done it with subtlety.

I love this album. It includes so many terrific songs that bring back memories. [We started listening to The Carpenters on our honeymoon ...]

Some interesting tracks:
From This Moment On features an interpolation of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier Book 1, Prelude no 2 into Cole Porter!

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is an excellent version of the Klaatu original. [And some people still think it really is the theme song of World Contact Day!]

The A Cappella version of Without a Song

The songs have been thoughtfully put together to create a great program. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Points for trying, points taken away for failing........2002-05-24

I personally like this CD. Unfortunately the spirit of ABBA is lost by some of those so-called artists out there. Some honorable mentions are E-Rotic's "Money, Money, Money" Bananarama's "Waterloo" and CoCo Lee's take on "Dancing Queen." Evan Dando's version of "Knowing me, knowing you" is mediocore, as well as Ash's "Does your mother know." The songs aren't bad, it's just, it sounds like the singers aren't even trying very hard. Some of the tracks sound like they were made in a matter of minutes, while others have careful attention paid to every vocal arrangement. That is why I scored the CD as 3 stars. Some songs are great, some aren't. It's a case of: either you like it, or you hate it. Which is a shame, because ABBA is a group that needs to be celebrated, just not like this. Anyway, I would rather spend the same amount of money on an actual ABBA album, than compared to this CD. Honestly, ABBA has so much more to offer.

    5 out of 5 stars ABBA-rific!.......2000-01-09

I purchased this CD (two in fact and gave one to a friend) and was not certain what to expect. I usually do not care for covers of songs. While I prefer the original ABBA versions, several cuts from this CD were more than pleasant surprises. Bananarama's Waterloo is a lot of fun. Honey Honey by Sofia/Michael Tretow is impressive (and a lot of fun as well). Knowing Me Knowing You by Evan Dando is pretty amazing, playing up the sadness of the song by it's sheer simplicity and melancholy. The a capella version of Dancing Queen is phenomenal! This song is worth buying the entire CD for (the arrangement and the blend of voices in this song are incredible!). Any ABBA fan will not be disappointed with this CD(unless you are expecting the various artists to sing the songs exactly the way ABBA did). This is definitely worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars for the vinyl addicts out there..........1999-12-20

i happen to own both cd and vinyl versions of this album. those who are looking to find liner notes in the vinyl version are bound to be disappointed-there isn't any, but the inclusion of remixes of: "the visitors", "the winner takes it all", "lay all your love on me", "honey, honey" <-the best remix of them all! and "dancing queen" (frida and the real group) might make up for its absence.

    4 out of 5 stars a timely , definitive tribute!.......1999-11-29

what could be a more definitive tribute album than have one fourth of the swedish quartet featured (anni frid lyngstad)on one track?

just when you thought nobody could finesse "dancing queen", comes anni frid lyngstad's a capella version. this makes coco lee's version (on the same album) pale, almost literally, by comparison. other tracks worth an average abba fan's time are e-rotic's take on "money, money, money", never a personal fave but its rave beat gives what was originally a schlager flavored tune a new twist, erasure's "take a chance on me", chicago's peter cetera on "s.o.s", a kitsched up version of "hasta manana" by army of lovers and a sparse, minimalist but effective irma on "the name of the game".

2 out of 5 stars I AM A BIG ABBA FAN!..& I am not too thrilled with this CD.......1999-10-16

I have been a Abba fan for many years and was not too happy with this CD. The only worthy tracks are the ones by Erasure, Banarama, Information Society and especially the one orginal member Frida did of Dancing Queen (probably the last we'll hear a orginal member of Abba sing one of their hits since they broke up) I guess I'm very protective of Abba's music and I think it is flawless and should be not be touched..they'll never be anyone who'll be able to top the orginal recordings. All I want is for Abba to get back together for one night and do a live concert and release it on Cd just once please I beg of you if any members are out there reading this...do something similar to Fleetwood Mac's The Dance, which had glorious results...

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic but mellow collection.......2004-09-10

Recorded at various dates between 1987 and 1997, this unusual compilation is a mix of pop, rock, country and folk music. With six of the twelve artists represented being country acts (if you include Nicolette Larson as country), you might think country is the most strongly represented, but none of them are traditional country - they all have elements of pop, rock or folk in their music. Five of the six country recordings were originally made for the charity, Stars come out for Christmas.

The set opens with the Roches' distinctive cover of Deck the halls, not as upbeat as I'm used to hearing it, but it works well. Next comes the much under-rated Nicolette Larson with Christmas is a time for give. The title track is an original song by Everything but the girl, the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Carrie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of the famous Beach Boy, Brian Wilson) do a fine version of Let it snow. Pat Benatar is in top form doing a bluesy version of Please come home for Christmas. Kim Carnes does a fine mid-tempo cover of Run run Rudolph. The remaining tracks all feature country singers except Karla Bonoff, brilliant on Everybody's home tonight. Of the country acts, my favorite is Highway 101, with Paulette Carlson, providing a superb version of the under-recorded It came upon the midnight clear. Holly Dunn, Juice Newton are also in peak form on their songs. The album closes with the relatively unknown McCarters (a folk-country trio) singing Noel.

Some but not all of these tracks can be found elsewhere. If you are looking for a mellow but eclectic Christmas album, this will suit you - if you can find it.
