Something more than the sum of it...........2006-08-09

Singer-songwriter Gina Roche's debut CD is a beautiful mix of originals (it's a treat to hear the literate lyrics she's written!) and standards. She's delicately laced her original compositions with lush, sensual Brazilian rhythms--her arrangements are a perfect fit with the great standards by Jobim and Luiz Bonfa she's included in this CD. Gina Roche's voice--a lovely sweetness, a whisper, a subtle throaty touch, a here-and-there tiny moan--is an instrument in the best Brazilian sense, and her flavors prove irresistible. Add something more to the sum of it...well, let's call it taste. Proof? Just listen to her rendition of 'Tenderly.'
Gina Roche is a terrific musician who knows her stuff: she's assembled two great trios--Chico Huff, bass; Allison Miller, drums, and the radiant guitarist, Romero Lumbabo; her piano trio includes bassist Tim Lekan, Miller again on drums, and the vital and vibrant pianist Jim Ridl.
Highly recommeded, a must have CD for anyone who loves real music

Sweet jazz.......2001-02-07

Roche is one of those rare artists who combines unbridled enthusiasm with sweet, sometimes understated melody. The rythms on "Dawning of a new way" seep into your pulse, and you find yourself gently bobbing up and down on a perfect back beat. Although it's a first release, "Dawning" is a mature effort, mixing ambitious originals with covers ranging from warm traditional jazz and Brazilian standards to Bill Wither's "Use Me," a funky break from the heavy stuff. The musicians are excellent throughout, and are given a chance to shine, neither buried by Roche's wide-ranging voice nor overshadowing it. The whole piece flows nicely from one song to the next, although two distinct trios are featured.

It was worth the wait!.......2001-02-07

A wonderful CD by a singer with a fabulous voice who knows how to use it. This CD encompasses some excellent standards, as well as some original music that brings tears to my eyes. The Gift of We is a gift to all of us. I find it impossible to listen to Gina without moving to the music. My favorite tracks change the more I listen, but Use Me and Summertime sizzle off the CD, and the Samba de Orfeu is music that makes my inner Snoopy dance! And that is about as good as it gets.

Amazing talent! Music to really enjoy........2001-02-03

This CD is great! When you're not being mesmerized by the beautiful voice of Gina Roche, the fantastic musicians take over. What Ms Roche does to Summertime is brilliant, and her originals are awesome!! We hope to hear much more of her and her music.
