"The disappearance of many court raga traditions began with India's independence. For five generations, master musicians of the Pathak family were patronized by the Maharajahs of Cossim Bazar, West Bengal. Ashok Pathak has begun to document his family's unique dhrupad legacy as part of a series exploring their rare and endangered tradition."
This he does with great artistry and skill, performing two beautiful selections on "the Pathak family's surbahar, built c. 1930 by Kanai Lal of Calcutta." The surbahar is basically a bass sitar, typically used in the 'alap', the arhythmic opening section of classical Indian musical performances.
Accompanied here by only tampura, Pandit Pathak's mastery of the surbahar is significant (including extensive use of a technique developed by his father: harmonics with 'meend', ornamental string bending), his obvious love for his music and the instrument evident in every part of these excellently recorded performances. Also, the disc's packaging and liner notes do justice to the music.
Highly recommended.
