5 out of 5 stars efficaciously relaxing.......2007-06-27

This is exactly what I was looking for. I now have some music to play at work that is soothing and keeps me focused. It also keeps me grounded as to what is really important in life. Highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars very calming.......2007-01-19

these gregorian chants are very calming . If your riding in your car, walking , or just sitting . it makes for excellent listening.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-08-28

Beautiful. Just like the first Chant. This is my "mellow out", puts me to sleep music. I didn't care for the applause at the end, but it's still a beautiful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Same Question As Before.......2003-04-24

The music is flawless. Haunting, spiritual, engrossing, and above all gorgeous. This disc is nothing short of amazing. Yet I gotta ask. Why is it that a recording of BENEDICTINE monks has a cover photo of men in FRANCISCAN robes?

Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."

Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley

When I purchased Mario's DVD I had never heard of him. I was actually browsing Josh Groban items when I noticed the [...] suggested items below and had a look.
What a find. Mario Frangoulis is an outstanding performer with an incredible voice. The quality of his concert is excellent with a full orchestra and top notch audio quality. I have watched this performance 7 times and can't wait to see it again.

I had borrowed this CD from a co-worker a couple of years ago and was so thrilled to find it available here. Mario is wonderful and so easy to listen to. If you like Josh Groban, Russell Watson, Andrea Boccelli than you'll love Mario Frangoulis.

One of 1998's better soundtracks also follows the most simple of formulas. Nicola Piovani's score for Life Is Beautiful is an impressionistic soundtrack at its finest--a delicious mix that sounds inspired by both simple folk melodies and Morricone's Cinema Paradiso score. Throughout, Piovani's themes are like a kid in candy store: bright-eyed and innocent. Tension is gradually introduced on tracks like "Il Treno Nel Buio," but ultimately this score is light and pleasant. The lone vocal cut, Monserrat Caballe singing on "Barcarolle," just makes this disc seem all the more Italian. Piovani hasn't created an epic score, but he has accentuated the difficult themes of Life Is Beautiful exceptionally well. --James Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars La Musica E Bella.......2005-07-01

Piovanni made a masterpiece with this soundtrack. This music won the Oscar of Best Dramatic Music in 1998. All the tracks of the CD have a special feeling. Through the seventeen tracks the CD shows a great range of feelings. It serves to create a perfect atmosphere for an Italy of the SWW. Next the highlights of the soundtrack:

*BUON GIORNO PRINCIPESSA shows a lethargic, romantic and beautiful theme for the movie, the solo of guitar are really nice. This is one of my favorites.
*LA VITTA E BELLA, well this track is a masterpiece, the main theme of the movie. It shows a colorful atmosphere, it demonstrates a pretty sense of the italic provinces of that time. It is wonderful, and it is one of my favorites.
*VIVA GIOSUE is a really nice variation of the main theme, with a little bit of innocence feeling. This variation appears also in IL GIOCO DI GIOSUE and GUIDO E FERRUCCIO, this second with a piano addition really nice.
*GRAND HOTEL VALSE, this is the first dancing track of the CD. This waltz uses an orchestra, so the music is more colorful, also it has a bit of magnificence. The track has a very good rhythm, and it is one of my favorites.
*GRAND HOTEL FOX, the second dancing track, a really good fox trot. This melody initiates the dance in the Grand Hotel. Is a really nice piece, it has all the elements to be an excellent track. This is another of my favorites.
*ARRIVA IL CARRO ARMATO is a piece that gives a winner feeling. It is a march variation of the main theme. Also it serves as a tribute to the American soldiers that ended the cruelty of the fascism. The innocence feeling appears again, one of my favorites.
*VALSE LARMOYANTE is another masterpiece of the CD. It is a more lethargic and romantic variation of GRAND HOTEL VALSE, with more string instruments. The opening with the violins is really beautiful and romantic. It is marvelous and beautiful, one of my favorites.
*L'UOVO DI STRUZZO (DANZA ETIOPE) this track makes a really oriental atmosphere. It is so colorful and beautiful, and the magnificence appears again. It is one of my favorites.
*KRAUTENTANG, this track shows a German march. It makes a really Germanic atmosphere. It is a really good track, and one of my favorites.
*BARCAROLLE, the Offenbach's piece has a good arrangement.
*ABBIAMO VINTO, the final track in the CD and in the film. It is a variation of the main theme with a peaceful and hope sense. The first part is really moving, and the second part is the main theme. It is a masterpiece and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd for a great movie!.......2002-02-07

My Grade 9 English class just watched this movie in class, and the music caught my attention. I'm an ice skater and i thought hey, maybe I'll skate to this. I think this is a wonderful cd, the music conveys the emotion of the movie excellently, and the movie was very good too. I recommend seeing the movie, and buying the cd!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming and Memorable.......2001-12-27

Before I listened to this, I held Edward Scissorhands in high esteem as the most beautiful score of all time. Life is Beautiful proved otherwise. Nicola Piovani made a charming score with heartfelt themes while still retaining the Italian nature of the film and its controversial subject. There are two innocent-sounding main themes that make up the film, one which is a deep somber theme for the theme of the film, and the other which is a light-hearted charming theme for Benigni's character. Both are used equally in the film and with great effect. Besides listening to the wonderful themes, I enjoyed listening to the Italian-influenced music, such as "Grand Hotel Valse" or "Grand Hotel Fox", which create the time and place of the movie without being intrusive. The music throughout the film is happy but tracks such as "La Notte Di Fuga", "Il Treno Nel Buio", and "Il Gioco Di Giosue" still remind the listener of the Holocaust-influence in the film. After the dark music, the CD ends with an absolutely moving rendition of the main theme, the best rendition of it in the whole film. Anyone who holds foreign films and their music in disregard should see Life is Beautiful. It's the perfect marriage between music and visuals, and it is not the same without Piovani's wonderful score.

5 out of 5 stars Lo mejor de las BSO.......2001-10-09

La mejor banda sonora, para la mejor película. No hay calificativos para esta preciosidad. Roberto Benigni es nada más que un simple genio del 7º arte.

Muy recomendado

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional soundtrack!.......2001-08-16

One of 1998's best soundtracks following the most simple of formulas. Piovani's score is an impressionistic soundtrack at its finest, not necessarily an epic score, but he has accentuated the difficult themes of Life Is Beautiful exceptionally well. This soundtrack goes hand in hand with the one for Schindler's List by John Williams.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Gigli.......2007-03-09

After Caruso's death, Beniamino Gigli became one of the most renowned tenors in the world. His rich voice well justified his reputation. While some of his mannerisms (the little "cries" and "catches" in his voice) can be a bit overdone, they were not atypical of the time. A few reactions to specific cuts.

"Celeste Aida" from Verdi's opera is smoothly sung; his rich voice serves to good effect. As already noted, the little "cries" are unfortunate, but hardly an issue. His higher notes flow smoothly from lower ones, in a seamless fashion. It would have been nice to hear him try for the piano at the end, but he did not choose to do so. Any way you slice it, a nice version of a glorious aria.

"La donna e mobile" is taken at a rather slow pace. It is smoothly sung but does not really catch the spirit of the wretched Duke. He shows wonderful breath control. This is more a workmanlike than scintillating version. On the other hand, "Che gelida manina" is wonderful. Smooth, elegant singing. A very well done high note. An iconic version.

The twin arias from "Tosca," "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle" are very well executed. His rendering of the final "la vita" in the latter aria is, again, noteworthy.

And now for something completely different. . . . "Funiculi funicula" is spritely sung, in good spirits, and it is a lot of fun! Most enjoyable. "O Sole mio," likewise, is well rendered. As previously noted, some "off putting" cries, but the warm, full voice more than makes up for such mannerisms. He does not overpower this song with operatic technique. The end result is most satisfying.

"La danza" befuddled the great Caruso (in his version, his breathing fell apart at one point). But not Gigli. Well sung, good breath control. Bravo Gigli!

Back to opera. . . . "Nessun dorma" is well sung. The vocalization is smooth. Gigli's voice soars over orchestra and other voices. The final "Vincero" rings out.

While this CD is not without some questions, as noted above, it is worth 5 stars for its full portrayal of the work of Gigli. As such, it can be recommended for anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to this singer.

5 out of 5 stars Gigli Is A Wonderful Singer!.......2006-07-31

It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang. Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality! I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Besides listening to Gigli on Cd, you'd be doing yourself a favor to buy a movie in which Gigli appears and sings. The movie is called "Non Ti Scordar di Me". I'll try to find it on amazon or from "The Bel Canto Society" and give it a "review" also. It's an "old movie" but it has a VERY touching story, is well acted, and you get to see and hear Gigli which is a great treat since he has been gone for at least 50 years. He "comes alive" in this CD and in the movie. You will "thrill" to the sound of his voice. Enjoy! Email:boland7214@aol.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2007-03-24

I first came upon this CD when I was Music Director of a public radio station and I couldn't wait to get it on the air. The response from the audience (@ 53,000) was warm and grateful. This gal not only has a beautiful voice, but also the training to use that voice to its best advantage. There are no swoops and crutches here (like that singer... ah, what's her name... oh, yeah.. Sarah Brightman), just a pure, clear, steady (not a lot of vibrato) almost ethereal voice accompanied by a marvelous instinct for how and when to inject interpretation. The orchestration is great, too, not too much, not too little. Wow, talk about crossover! I hope Summer comes up with another CD soon. I've almost worn this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Who is the artist?.......2007-01-24

Based on the information provided by Amazon.com the featured artist on this CD is Pino Palladino. He is listed as a "performer," along with half a dozen other people. So what does he perform, I wonder? Mandolin? Tuba? The title of the CD is "Summer," so that must mean all the songs are about June, July and August. But the reviewers all talk about a woman named Summer, who is apparently a singer.
More lousy product information from Amazon.com. Nothing new, but worth whining about.

5 out of 5 stars Cross over music that works brilliantly.......2006-03-14

I heard Summer on a sampler cd I got for free from one of the local bookstores. I kept coming back to her song and liked it enough to order her entire cd from amazon. Great purchase to say the least. She moves effortlessly between classical and pop selections. She has a way of working within the song and not overextending - meaning she doesn't showboat. Don't expect any american idol grandstanding at any time. What you get is straight up professional singing from a classicaly trained vocalist. It doesn't get boring thanks to a great mix of songs. The treatment of Sting's 'fragile' is especially nice. Not an essential cd but I still give it 5 stars because it's practically flawless.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD and Good Voice.......2005-04-27

Summer has a very nice sounding voice and her choice of songs is very good. Her Rich sounding voice is just perfect for the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Listen.......2005-02-28

Listen and I'm sure you will buy a copy even if you already have the songs she sings. I did. The next vocal queen.

Amazon.com Classical Music Reviews

With this CD devoted solely to operatic arias--by none less than Giuseppe Verdi, the greatest Italian opera composer of all time--pop crossover phenomenon Andrea Bocelli throws his hat into the operatic ring with the big boys. The hat occasionally fits, and occasionally it doesn't. The beauty of the voice is undeniable, as is the relative ease in all registers. But, regardless of what the engineers do, it is clearly a small voice. For "Celeste Aïda"--Radames's great aria from Aïda--Bocelli opens with fine, as-big-as-possible exclamation and sounds confident; the long diminuendo on the aria's final high B-flat is stunning (whether or not the engineers were twiddling with the knobs, we'll never know). The tenor is more at home with Alfredo's Act Two music from La Traviata; he sings with grace and charm, ending the rarely performed cabaletta (a brief and showy piece that usually follows an aria) with one of the longest, most solid high Cs ever recorded. Elsewhere, there are mixed results: "Di' tu se fedele" from Un ballo in maschera is so free of feeling that it seems digitally produced. A big, unnecessary high D at the close of the Duke's cabaletta "Possente amor" from Rigoletto is screamed, and Bocelli sounds at times as if he's about to collapse from exhaustion during a heavy aria from Ernani. But "Ah si, ben mio" from Il Trovatore is beautiful, as is the Luisa Miller aria; Don Carlo also seems to fit Bocelli well. Needless to say, the singer's fans will certainly want to have this--and it might encourage them to try other recordings of music by Verdi. Newcomers and the curious will find plenty to admire, too. The sound itself remains alluring, and Bocelli has taken steps also towards improving his technique. In short, some nice surprises for the opera lover, and many for the Bocelli fan. --Robert Levine

This CD came perfectly, I just prefer the Amore CD better.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-14

It is said that from the age of eleven years, Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901) wanted to write operas. He left his post as organist to study music in Milan, a move made possbile by his patron,Barezzi, whose daughter he eventually married in 1836. Shortly thereafter he composed his first opera 'Oberto" which was so successful that his future seemed secure. However, the death of his wife and two babies some time later forced him into a state of depression. The impressario Mirelli gave him the book 'Nabucco' (Nebuchadnezzar) to read, and he immediately began to write music for it. Therewith he embarked on the career which eventually made him the "Grand Old Man" of Italian opera. In modern slang, he was a "natural".From "Oberto", written in his twenties, to "Falstaff", completed when he was eighty, his characteristic integrity and intensity persisted; as he wrote his 30 operas, his powers of expression broadened and deepened. By the time he wrote 'Aida', commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Verdi was 56. 'Aida' is often named as his greatest opera. The live elephants used in the production, the authentic costumes and musical instruments copied from ancient Egyptian tombs made an attractive picture, and his music made a "Celeste Aida" of the whole.
Lets face it; Bocelli is no Pavoratti, and perhaps it was not wise to choose some of the arias associated with tenors of his ilk, but Bocelli makes the best of his talents, which are considerable. And he has done a lot to create interest among young voice students,(male) and as a voice teacher I make use of his appearance and his youthfulness to engage their interest, and he does that!!!!I think his record sales tell the tale.

5 out of 5 stars Verdi.......2007-01-03

Excellent Verdi selections. As usual, top tonal quality with excellent breath control. The best tenor to come along with such diversification as to sing just about anything presented to him. A superb choice for the connoisseur of italian operas.

1 out of 5 stars The triumph of mediocrity.......2006-02-04

No, Bocelli is not an awful singer, he is an awful OPERA singer, and it shows here. His colorless, uneducated and bland voice make me wonder why people like him so much. As a baritone in training I'm able to say that my voice teacher's STUDENTS sing much better than this guy.
His tessitura is nowere near adequate for singing any of the arias from Rigoletto, "La donna è mobile" sounds much like a kid would sing it. "Celeste Aida" is one of the worst selections, and one of the most electronically enhanced, as it requires a precise voice placement (which Bocelli doesn't posses) since much of it lies very high in the register, and a heavier, rounder voice; if the role is not adequate for many REAL tenors, it is much less adequate for a pop singer. The "feeling" raving reviewers talk about is nothing more than a voice coming (incorrectly) from the throat, and the "beautiful" high D in "Possente amor" is a beautifully screamed falsetto, the same could be said about "Di quella pira"'s C; what's amazing about all this is the fact that electronic enhancement doesn't make his voice sound better. Some have ludicrously compared him to the likes of Vargas, Domingo, and Corelli, even saying he's better; this is nothing more than ignorance and bad taste.
Maybe his fans are tired of detractors bringing out the big names in their defense, so let's be honest: he's one of the WORST opera interpreters out there, I wish great singers like Mariusz Kwiecen, Matthew Polenzani, and René Pape received the publicity he gets, though it won't happen; at least some consolation lies in the fact that these people are true artists willingly and GLADLY offering their art to the people in order to make a living; I'm sure if Andrea didn't make so much $$$$ with his opera experiment, he would've dropped this travesty long ago.

4 out of 5 stars no expert.......2005-12-17

I'm not a genuine, dyed-in -the-wool opera fan. The sound of the soprano voice makes me grit my teeth. Some of the great tenors are very pleasing, but mostly I'm just not especially enthusiastic or impressed. Actually, I think it's rather stupid for good singers to abuse their voices by bellowing. This was necessary before the invention of amplification, but not any more.
So, obviously, I'm not in the position to compare Bocelli's arias to those of the tenors considered the greats. I can hear that his voice lacks the robustness of the Pavarottis of this world. BUT - I like many of the famous arias, and to my ear, Bocelli's performances, electronically enhanced or not, are melodic and pleasant to the ear. As a result of listening to Bocelli, I've become familiar with some great music that I would otherwise be likely to ignore.
So I listen and enjoy and really don't care about all the criticism.

The Italian Salvatore Licitra and the Argentinian Marcelo Alvarez are, arguably the two most exciting, promising (they're in their 30s), big-voiced, bread-and-butter (or steak-and-potatoes) "Italian" tenors around. Yhey have proved themselves on the stages of the great opera houses of the world and on recordings. This CD is designed to present them to a wider audience--it is clearly meant to appeal to Three Tenors and Andrea Bocelli fans. And, in fact, it succeeds. These guys have glorious voices: Licitra's is darker and somewhat heavier than Alvarez's, but the latter's shine is irresistible; one might compare them to Domingo and Pavarotti, respectively, to make that point. Neither has any problem throughout his entire range; each has big, secure top notes, and there's an innate musical intelligence at work at all times. Opera fans will relish the fantastic singing--listening to them trade high B naturals in the CD's third song, "Odissea," is thrilling--but will probably be disappointed by the music. It's soupily arranged, sentimental background drivel with catchy melodies (parts of "Salut demeure" from Gounod's Faust show up in something called "Son gli occhi tuoi," complete with a stellar high C from Alvarez), and even the gorgeous duet from Bizet's Les Pêcheurs de Perles (one of two "classical" pieces on the CD, if one doesn't count an instrumental piece by Bach to which trite lyrics have been added) has been re-arranged to include a tinny chorus, when singing it as written would have been a magnificent treat. Their voices are bathed in a phony-pop glow which will please the Bocelli market while continuing to horrify purists. Yet it is impossible not to be bowled over by the singing--a few off-pitch-at-low-volume moments and a mess of a "Je crois entendre encore" aside. In short, two high-power, world-class operatic tenors in their prime, singing, for the most part, music in which the treacle level is obnoxiously--even dangerously--high. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Great CD and Voices........2005-10-18

I love tenors and Italian music. Groban, Safina, Bocelli, Frangolis. These two men are in their category, and one of them even sounds like Safina. Very pleasant to listen in the car and in my office. I can listen more than once a day. You have to listen more than once. Don't expect to fall in love from the first sound.

Some critisizm:
a)One of the tenors is using to much vibrato, since it's popera... otherwise it's sounds great.
b)Duetto needs to be a Tenor - Soprano. These two guys should make separate CDs with two ladies. Groban does it very well!

5 out of 5 stars The young tenors........2005-09-12

The amazing part of this album is that two young tenors can make as much music as three tenors (Carreras · Domingo · Pavarotti) have in the past. Salvatore Licitra and Marcelo Alvarez are the future - there is a balance in how they sing together, adding strength to rather than competing with one another.

5 out of 5 stars UNEXPECTED.......2005-08-09

I bought this CD on suggestion from Amazon.com...I am thrilled with the music. The songs are emotional, beautiful, and well done. It was a great choice.

2 out of 5 stars Pop Op.......2004-05-15

Their voices blend well and the opera duets are a little out of the ordinary. Unfotunately, they have been orchestrated with a Hollywood flair and sung with synthetic flamboyance. What a pity that it is only nice background music. I had hoped for excitement.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2004-02-24

I LOVED this CD. I'm a fan of tenors, but not a serious student of their voices, so I can't attest to the flawlessness of phrasing, etc. However, I found the music to be soulful and stirring, and Licitra and Alvarez's voices full and rich. I have given this CD to everyone I know - my parents, cousins, great aunts and friends, even my massage therapist, and everyone has enjoyed it. I listen to it often, pretending to sing along!

4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-20

So I was on a Renaissance kick for a while and picked this up, first of all, great value. I enjoy listening to a few of these every now and then but can't take too much at once, check out the previews and if you interested, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Not stilted but powerfully alive.......2005-02-24

My idea of stilted is to sing these madrigals in the phony, glee-club RP style endured for so many years, that made precious, quaint curiosities of them. The Elizabethan pronunciation on this CD is an eye and ear-opener. We may appreciate how much of that speech actually endures in regional accents in both the US and UK. More importantly, this CD brings us the sounds of the long-forgotten English human beings of the Renaissance, people who drank, fought and screwed, who brought us Shakespeare and the King James Bible. I love this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Better at Italian than English.......2003-07-25

A stilted style and even more stilted attempts at Renaissance-English pronunciation make the English Madrigal disk a terrible disappointment. All emotional content -- the mellow, lumimous melancholy with flashes of fire that characterizes English music at its best -- has been drained in this attempt to kill, skin, and stuff these madrigals in order to present them as museum pieces. The pronunciation problem is particularly galling -- if these songs are going to be made incomprehensible to modern English speakers, where, then, is their cultural home?

The Italian pieces are presentable, enjoyable, and sung with delicacy and a fine sense of the artifice of the Italian madrigal. Although this recording can be moving, these pieces are performed more with reverence than with love. These are well worth hearing, but the French ensembles sing these with a bit more feeling. Try, say, Ensemble Clément Janequin.

5 out of 5 stars Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31

Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.

Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

Nino Rota's tapestry is fine and the weave is just right...one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen...Rota's music was a large part of the picture...as you sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail...you know right then and there why music is so important for any film.
