Not Just An Album - But A Gift.......2007-07-16
It seems that the purpose and context of this Album has been lost on more than a couple of people, mainly those calling for a "remix" or complaining about the "sound quality".
Historically, Rush live albums have been highly polished affairs, known for their musical perfection, thanks to the magic of post production cleanup. In fact, Exit Stage Left does not have much of a live feel as the entire album feels like a studio album with applause scotch taped to the beginning and end of each song to give it a "live vibe"
And as a result, this is what we've come to expect from "The Three Stooges". Studio and Live albums that are mixed and played with perfection, but lacking, sometimes in soul.
Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense, is arguably one of the best live concert movies ever produced precisely because if feels less like a movie and more like a concert. When I first saw it in a Movie Theatre, the entire auditorium treated it as a live event, with dancing in the aisles, and lighting of bic lighters (much to the dismay of the theatre manager). However it's resulting CD suffered because of the perfect nature of its recording and mix. The "I was there" aspect did not translate well from "movie" to "CD"
The same, thankfully, does not hold true for Rush In Rio. Due partly to weather conditions beyond the band's control, and partly due to a conscious decision made on the part of the band, Rush In Rio, feels more like being at a live concert than any album I have heard to date.
The energy and enthusiasm of 40000 rabid Rush fans is truly captured, and it is evident that the "Boys" fed off the energy of the evening. What you hear, is something that Rush has not been noted for: Emotion.
Emotion, in the fact that this may have been farewell show for the band (thankfully not). Emotion, in the fact that Neil Peart, having overcome great tragedy, reunites with the band and plays his heart out. Emotion, that the band is overwhelmed by the love of the fans that they received on their first ever trip to Brazil.
Rush In Rio, therefore, is not just an album, but a gift back. A gift back to all those rabid fans that experienced a once in a lifetime concert in the torrential tropical rain. A gift to all Rush fans who have stayed true to this band throughout it's 30+ years of performing. And a gift to themselves: a souvenir of a truly special night, never again to be repeated. A slice of life, to cherish and hold on to.
Those who prefer the more glossy live stuff can find nearly the entire setlist on Rush's other albums (All The Worlds A Stage, Exit Stage Left, A Show Of Hands, Different Stages, and the R30 album).
However, for those who wish to have an experience of a single night, with all it's emotion, humanity, and yes even the occasional drowning out by the enormous crowd, this album is for you.
Rush has given us, in Rush In Rio, what few bands have the guts to do. They give us a complete document of one special night, a true concert "on the go" for us to enjoy time and time again, anywhere we please.
For those who wish to have their live music sanitized for their protection, I offer you this advice (My apologies to "The Stooges")
"You can choose to berry pick your live tracks from I-Tunes...I will choose the path that's clear, I will choose RIO".

Oddly enough their new CD Snakes and Arrows is mixed just as badly as this one is. If you like your music muddy, crowded, and sounding musically claustrophopic and dreadful, then buy this CD and Snakes and Arrows.
Rush is one of the best progressive bands ever to make music and it is a disservice to not be able to hear the music clearly. A remix/remaster as soon as possible will reinvigorate this CD. I don't know what they were thinking when they mixed and mastered these discs for release in 2003, but make this right, now.

Ms Anders has a very pleasant Jazz styled voice and her singing is relentlessly sensuous! (whatever THAT means! ;-))
Gabriela Anders' instrumental ensemble adopts a very suave and low key Latin approach. There is some very tasteful acoustic guitar, keyboard and accordion playing on this album. Some nice random ambient elements also keep the instrumental aspect of this album agreeably and tastefully "left of centre".
Needless to say, this the sort of thing that Robot-of-Romance, Norah Jones, was probably trying to do on her hapless first album. Gabriela Anders is the real thing and a 'class act' unlike her aforementioned peer. Last Tango in Rio is ideal late night listening - with a glass of wine, candle light and someone you fancy!
Less smooth jazz, more tango ... works for me!.......2005-03-13
In reading previous reviews I noticed one reviewer who first heard of this album in the L.A. TIMES as I did, but was not happy with the results. While I'm a satisfied customer, this disc may not be for those who are looking for a more traditional jazz vocal approach. Granted, there is a perhaps-confusing "FILE UNDER: JAZZ" reminder on the back cover. Yet Anders' style is much more in line with the current generation of Brazilian singers (Bebel Gilberto, etc.) than with most so-called jazz singers. RIO is nothing like Diana Krall's albums of pop standards, for one. While Anders does interpret a number of pop classics that jazz vocalists have frequently turned to ("Love Is Here To Stay," "Body And Soul"), they are reconfigured to fit Anders' style. The difference is particularly striking on "God Bless The Child," which in my opinion is one of the album's highlights but may be too big of a change for some. To each their own, and in my case RIO is much more in line with what I want to hear than the other Anders album I mentioned.

Recorded during Iron Maiden's headlining 2001 performance at the Rio Rock Festival, this double CD finds the legendary metal outfit in fearsome form. Revitalized thanks to the return of original singer Bruce Dickinson for 2000's Brave New World, the one-time East London bar band clearly relishes tearing through old and choice new songs in front of 250,000 people--the biggest crowd they'd ever seen. This is traditional metal at its squealing, pummeling best. Established classics like "Wrathchild" and "Two Minutes to Midnight" reemphasize all that is unashamedly great about proper heavy metal, including the rock-solid riffing, the brick-outhouse rhythms, and the outrageous solos. The early 1980s hits "Number of the Beast" and "Run to the Hills" prove that Iron Maiden can deliver a sing-along chorus that will rattle around the inside of your skull for hours, if not days. What really makes Rock in Rio, though, is the near studio-quality production and the rabid reaction of the South American throng, who do their best to drown out the band. Here is proof, if any is needed, that Dickinson and company are up there with the rock greats. --Ian WatsonCustomer Reviews:

Some reviewers here claim that LAD was better because that had the best tracklist, but c'mon, what do you wan't them to do, to make 5 live albums with the same tracklist?
Other complain that it has nothing from the late 80's albums except for 'The Evil Men That Do', and even this sounds better here. I was surprised to not see 'Wasted Years' or 'Heaven Can Wait' here, but 'Somewhere in Time' is actually my least favorite IM album from the 80's so it doesn't really bother me.
Here you have what the 90's songs lacked, and this is Bruce vocals and Adrian's killer solos. My favorite track here is 'Fear of the Dark', and it is the best version ever made to this song, with Adrian's solo. 'Sign of the Cross' is also much better than the studio version, Blaze sang this well but Bruce did it better.
Most of the early 80's songs sound better on LAD with the exception of 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' and 'Run to the Hills', because of Bruce vocals, but the still kick here.
There is also 3 guitarists, and believe me, it helps here. And there is also double bass drumming, which wasn't on LAD, and that really helps in tracks like 'Hallowed be thy Name', but this song still sounds at its best in the studio.
There are some songs that sound even better live like those I listed above, but as well 'Blood Brothers', 'Ghost of the Navigator', 'Clansman' and 'Run to the Hills'.
The production is also good, although on LAD it was better but slightly. It's certainly better than the production crap on 'Live at Donington' and 'Real Live Dead One'.
If I have any complaints, it should be as people said, there are too much songs from 'Brave New World', there should be more songs from 'Powerslave' (the best metal album ever, period). The only 2 tracks I was dissapointed with are '2 Minutes to Midnight', and 'Wrathchild', they sound at their best in the studio and here the vocals don't fit the instruments.
If you like live concerts and Maiden and don't have this, get it now. Don't waste your money on Metallica's or Linkin Park's concerts (Metallica has good stuff, but today their concerts just blow), Maiden destroys them live (and LP in the studio, IM can get away without a DJ and millions of synthersizers to enhance their sound).
Still kicking out the jams!.......2005-11-11

"Tubular bells" has a bit different sound from original and it features diffrrent ending - very funny "sailor's hornipipe" version with crazy commentary by Drunken Vivian Stanhall (master of ceremony in part 1) - a very nice suprise...
If you are a big fan of Early progressive and instrumental music,or just a Mike Oldfield fan this is a must have for you - it is also good for those fans that don't have internet to collect Mike's rare songs...
Mike and Me.......2003-04-05
Superb.......2003-01-31
This CD set is an excellent collection of Oldfield's early work, and the re-mix on Tubular Bells (including the original Sailor's Hornpipe, as opposed to the toned down version used for the original American release) is hysterical (but a bit blind-siding if you're very familiar with the original -- first time I listened to it I almost pulled the needle off the LP so I could check the LP for problems).
Well worth the money, as among other things it includes Hergest Ridge, which is hard to find.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22
Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.
Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".
Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".
The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"
Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".
The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!
Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16
"film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13
Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.
Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.
Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.
On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.
The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.
Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.
When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

APOCALYPSE has been the first Brazilian band signed by Musea for a new record. Released at the end of the Eighties, "Lendas Encantadas" (1989) revealed an exceptional band playing Progressive rock music full of energy, obviously inspired by MARILLION. The reissue includes four bonus-tracks recorded in 1996. The second album "Perto Do Amanhecer" (1995) proves to be in the same vein, but even better ! These twelve concise pieces mix peaceful acoustic moments with more agressive and nearly hard-rock passages. And the Portuguese singing gives the music an exotic and very nice touch. Discover the warmth of this sunny music, when admiring the superb pictures included in the booklet. "Aurora Dos Sonhos" (1996) displays a luxurious Progressive rock music, halfway between influences from the Italian school from the Seventies (BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA) and the recent neo Progressive efficiency. A successful and subtle mixing. "Refugio" (2003) includes ten tracks (Plus two bonus tracks) and a fantastic booklet with photos, lyrics and information about the band. More than the usual quality Progressive rock with symphonic influences, it delivers us those forgotten feelings like peace, love and compassion. It is, undoubtly, an album worth listening to ! "Live In Rio" features the band performing in the Rio ArtRock Festival 2005. That's the occasion to discover a new repertoire, as well as old tracks sung by the newcomer Gustavo DEMARCHI. His particularity is to sing in English, unlike his predecessor. Thanks to this, the music sounds more neo Progresive than ever ! One hour and a quarter of music you cannot afford to miss !
