Product Description
This is the first on-location recording of the folk music of the Garifuna people. The songs reflect the varied history of the nomadic Garifuna, who constantly roam from their home of San Vicente Island. Music and dance are the core of their lives; their music features the rhythmic dynamism and diversity that derives from their African heritage, along with repeated melodies of inherent beauty and simplicity, accompanied by a variety of traditional drums, tortoise shells, clappers, maracas and conch shells, which are used as wind instruments. Aurelio Martinez and Lucas Caldren formed Lita Ariran in Honduras in 1989 with the goal of reinforcing the cultural identity of the Garifuna. Due to modern economic conditions, many of these people have been leaving their villages and their country to seek better opportunities in the U.S. and elsewhere. Lita Ariran are struggling to preserve the gradually disappearing traditions in light of these circumstances, playing a valiant role as the irreplaceable successors of the traditional arts of their people.

What a beautiful CD!.......2003-11-23

I saw this CD in a store and since I had previously heard the group at a performance in St. Charles, I thought I'd buy it. I'm very happy I did. I play it all the time. Beautiful vocals and music. They start with some wonderful John Rutter compostitions highlighting the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra and then move into more traditional choral music featuring American and British folk songs. Shenendoah closes out the CD and is just beautiful. When I heard them do it live they moved out into the church and surrounded the audience. What a moment. This CD captures the feeling of the performance and I'm glad I have it.

Buy this CD.

If you have scrolled this far down the page, you are obviously interested enough to be serious about this genre. I therefore say - you MUST buy this CD. The "Briggs Fair" alone is worth the price, I'd pay half as much again for their recording of the Turtle Dove.

Such a beautiful clear tenor voice, perfect tuning, not too fruity, not too dry. Add to this truly glorious phrasing and overall shape, and the unteachable sense of the shape of the music, and you have an almost impossibly good combination.

The first time you hear this disc you will fall in love with it. You will have to buy it, if it's not yours already. Don't waste time. Addict your friends. Get it NOW!

With some changes in the band line-up, Simply Jane forged ahead, wrote some new songs and ended up in Cannon Falls, MN, home of Pachyderm Studio. Many big names in music--Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Live, Soul Asylum, and most recently, Mudvane, have written and recorded albums at the secluded residential studio. Band members Jana Davis (vocals), Steve Hill (guitar), Mike Zapp (keyboards), Shawn Day (bass)and Jack Shannon (drums) hail from various backgrounds, but all ended up in Sheridan, Wyoming, where Simply Jane was formed. Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.
