Hey Do Right

No false modesty holds Boozoo Chavis back on his new album, "Hey Do Right!" The zydeco legend titles one lazy, hypnotic groove, "Message from the Master," declaring that all the young musicians "want to put me in the pasture, but I want them to know one thing, I'm still the master." On the hard-driving two-step, "What You Gonna Do," he immodestly asks how the zydeco scene will cope once he's gone. Chavis doesn't have the virtuosity of some of his protegees, but there's something ancient, African, and authentic about his hypnotic accordion riffs and uncompromising growl. NRBQ keyboardist and longtime fan Terry Adams produced the album and encouraged Chavis to show off his harmonica skills on "Jump the Boogie," his 12-bar roots on "Mother's Blues" and his knack for witty insults on "You're Gonna Look Like a Monkey." --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Boozoo is the King of Zydeco.......2001-10-12

This album is a good introduction to Boozoo and the Magic Sounds. It includes perhaps his best song, "You're Gonna Look Like A Monkey When You get Old". It's a shame, but in this genre, most people seem to have only heard of Buckwheat Zydeco. This album is fun music, and more real, souful and legitimate than Buckwheat Zydeco. In comparison, Boozoo is Bob Dylan and the Beatles, while Buckwheat Zydeco is O-Town.
