Album Description

Few artists have as rich and varied a history with ECM as Dino Saluzzi. The Argentine bandoneon master has recorded 10 albums, and each one tells it's own endlessly inventive musical story. The spirit of Dino Saluzzi's work is derived from the oral tradition of Argentina's music and its value on melody and simplicity.

A 1996 collaboration with the Munich-based Rosamunde Quartett became the starting point for Saluzzi's work with cellist Anja Lechner. Lechner has had her own success on ECM, most notably with her album, the hit Chants, Hymns and Dances. For the past six years, Saluzzi and Lechner have performed in concert all over Europe.

Ojos Negros is the first recording from this magical duo, and creates a richly lyrical dialogue that blurs the lines between folk music, jazz and tango. This is chamber music with Argentine traditions, presented through Saluzzi compositions and the beautiful old tango tune "Ojos negros" ("Black Eyes").

an intense listen. Great communication and interaction . Music as a form of human language has rarely been demonstrated so exquisitely . High Art . While still being an easy but attentive listening

4 out of 5 stars Soporific Yet Satisfying.......2007-06-08

The liner notes in the handsome booklet that accompanies Ojos Negros start with a very telling anecdote involving Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, and it is obvious that the author of the notes intended the putative Borges quote to apply to the music of Dino Saluzzi as well. That is, if you don't understand the work, then its not for you.
That has been the problem for me since I was introduced to the music of Saluzzi through his work with Al DiMeola's world music project. He was so good there, I sought out his own projects. But as hard as I tried, I just didn't connect with any of them until now.
If you are looking for the music of Dino Saluzzi, then its likely that you already know what the bandoneon is all about. There surely is not another instrument with the power to express melancholy, longing and angst as the bandoneon and that is what makes perfect for tango. But in the last half-century, adventurous musicians, Saluzzi among them, have explored the possibilities of the bandoneon beyond the world of tango.
The foundation of Ojos Negros lies in tango. The title of the CD itself is also the name of a tango dating from the time of the Guardia Vieja of the early 20th century, and it is indeed the only composition covered here that is not Saluzzi's. If you know the piece, you will surely recognize it. But while Saluzzi's music is anchored in tango, his collaboration here with German cellist Anja Lechner extends his musical reach deep into the worlds of chamber music and avant-garde jazz and the result is often spellbinding.
I have listened to Ojos Negros at least a dozen times since I bought it. And though I did not like it instantly, its musical secrets gradually revealed themselves to me after repeated listens. This is a work that surely demands that you be all ears lest the key to its mysteries escape you. It is somber, it is stately, and it is often soporific, yet it is ultimately satisfying.
A couple of other Saluzzi CDs I own haven't really "worked" for me. Ojos Negros does. If you have the patience and the time to listen without distractions, you may find that it works for you as well.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant and free-flowing........2007-05-30

Argentine Dino Saluzzi, a master of an accordion-like instrument called the bandoneon, plays moody, meandering music derived from the tango.
He is a virtuoso and a symbol of the music which he plays.
A Master of his instrument, and of his idiom, a defiantly acoustic, 21st-century development of the angst-ridden New Tango.
He has collaborated with jazz masters such as John Surman, and with classical ensembles such as the Rosamunde Quartett. He was a star of last year's Norwegan Nattjazz festival where he was featured in a concerto-like setting with the Bergen Big Band.
"Ojos Negros" features eight duets performed with German cellist Anja Lechner (of the Rosamunde Quartett), all but one composed by Saluzzi. Yet mastery does not guarantee a world-beating album.
The duo's interpretations are elegant and free-flowing, but there's a lack of compositional bite that is not always compensated for by sheer performance.
There are times, listening to these intense and beautifully recorded duets, when the predominant impression is that of eavesdropping on a well-mannered private conversation.
Which is why many people will adore "Ojos Negros".

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing combination.......2007-05-27

This is a fabulous album, combining a couple of excellent musicians performing an interesting tango music with an unusual colour of sound, Piazolla must be thrilled!

5 out of 5 stars pure grace and beauty in sound..........2007-04-15

I've had this recording for 2-3 weeks now, and I can't seem to get enough of it. On first listening, from the first few notes breathed from Dino Saluzzi's bandoneón, I knew I was in for something magical. Even though Dino's `sound' is recognizable immediately, no one should mistake that statement as characterizing him as standing still musically - his art is continuously evolving and growing. Since the issue of his first album for ECM, KULTRUM (1982), I've been following the creativity of his music, and I've never been disappointed. He has worked as a solo artist, in duos, trios and larger groupings - his 1999 recording with the Rosamunde Quartett (again entitled KULTRUM) showed that the bandoneón fit perfectly into a setting that could almost be classified as chamber music.

That recording also marked his first work with Anja Lechner, cellist for Rosamunde - she had for some time loved the music of the tango, and working more closely with Dino allowed her to hear that genre performed in a manner much more authentic than the European derivatives to which she had mainly been exposed. Saluzzi's music, she relates, `...was more profound that just tango. He was playing a music that was really his own...I entered a new world.' She is without a doubt one of the finest cellists working today in any genre - her skill and sensitivity, and her ability to convey emotion and feeling in her playing without overriding her partner make her a perfect match to Dino's work.

The phrase `more profound than just tango' describes the art of Dino Saluzzi perfectly. In his hands, the bandoneón breathes with a life of its own - it becomes a part of him, an alternate voice, a storyteller, a filter through which passes everything he has seen, felt, tasted, experienced over the course of his life. When I listen to Dino play, I can close my eyes and see a mountain path shrouded in the mist of early morning. I can rub the dirt of a country road at twilight under my bare feet, fell wind with a hint of coming rain blowing in early evening, take in the scent of a meal cooking over a fire, hear the laughter of children playing, relax in the embrace of a lover, see the wisdom in the dark eyes of a forest Indian. Dino's music is his history - there are pieces inspired by events, family members, acquaintances, places and times - and the skill, love and care with which he evokes all of these things is nothing short of palpable in his playing.

There are a couple of pieces here that Dino has recorded before - `Tango a mi padre', the album's opening track, is a loving portrait of his father, and first appeared on MOJOTORO in 1991. `Minguito' was recorded on VOLVER, a project he did with the great Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava, in 1986. All of the pieces, save `Ojos negros' - composed by bandoneónist Vicente Greco (1888-1924) - are Saluzzi originals. `Esquina' is a particularly beautiful example of how Dino's memories wind their way through his music. He remembers the time, in his village of Salta, more than 60 years ago: `I still have this very clear picture of my father, sitting on a rock somewhere in our little village. I see him from the back, in his short-sleeved white t-shirt, in the moonlight, playing the bandoneón - and he's playing a song I loved when I was just seven years old, a sad song about leaving a beautiful small town to go to the big city of Paris...'

The bandoneón and the cello complement each other exquisitely throughout the recording - alternately leading or supporting, weaving in and out of each other with the grace of skillful dancers, moving so naturally that the listener might be compelled to suspect mind-reading talents are involved. Grace is indeed involved, but the music is also evolving constantly - Anja Lechner says, `In Dino's music, you never play any phrase the same way twice.' Dino adds, `We are basically playing a music build of rubato phrases - but the conception of the rubato is different at every concert. The pieces change all the time, but the way the improvising is integrated is different from the jazz approach...the composition is an idea that suggests some possibilities...we take a lot of freedom with the forms.' The freedom here is based on structure as a foundation - but the skill of the players never allows the music to descend into anarchy. There is grace and beauty in every note, every phrase - it's a wonderful thing to experience.

Now and then one can hear the rhythm and form of the tango assert itself - it rises up for a moment, as if to remind us of where this music was born, of its lineage, then dances off into the mists of sound created by the players, leaving an audio shadow, a presence that never quite disappears. That being said, one should definitely not go into Dino Saluzzi's music expecting it to be limited to `tango' - that would be a big mistake. When asked if his music should be called `tango', Dino wisely says `Time spent trying to define the music is time taken away from playing it. I always simply say, "I play music, sir", and I hope that is enough...does the music touch you or not? This is what matters.'

I've always felt that the mark of a master musician is the impression left with the listener that the instrument is an extension of the performer's voice, of his or her very soul - a window to their inner being, through which everything that makes them the person they are can be `seen' in the form of sound. This recording delivers on that rare level - and it soars even higher on repeated listenings. It's a treasure in the fullest sense of the word.

Astor Piazzolla lived and died as tango's bad boy, having almost single handedly invented the music's vanguard, the form known as tango nuevo. It took Piazzolla decades to reach his unequivocal apex, which is captured flawlessly on Tango Zero Hour. When this recording was cut in 1986, some of the compositions Piazzolla and his quintet cued up were standards for the band. Whether it was an epiphanic period or not, the recording captures an ensemble alchemically transforming seriously complex works into goose-bump-inducing electricity. Pianist Pablo Ziegler brings his jazz background into the mix with jarring urgency, just as violinist Fernando Suárez Paz makes quavering classical inflections sing amid Piazzolla's here tender and there blistering bandoneon. For a peak experience in music that challenges the ear to dance and the body to fully listen, look no further than this recording. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars New Tango.......2006-08-20

Tango: Zero Hour was the very first tango recording/CD I had ever heard. A friend of mine loaned it to me, not ever telling me exactly what Tango was- all I knew to think of was the dancers with the roses between their teeth, where the dancing was more dramatic than the music... So, my first mistake: having never heard tango. My second? Listening to it late at night in the dark. Music had never rocked my world quite like this... It was the most intense experience I had ever had with music. I was shocked. Wide-eyed. Taken aback. The version I had in my hands was the original with the liner notes, not the new shiny one that I now own (and that you can now buy), and the prose written on the card inside was enough to rip me in half without having ever heard the music. Tango: Zero Hour is not for the faint at heart. It is not for the light enthusiast. As the liner notes so eloquently said: "And suffer, Motherf*****. This is the Tango."

5 out of 5 stars Tango evolved to its most abstract and profound expression.......2006-06-16

Im ashamed to say I began listening to Piazzola at my mid thirties... well, better late than never... Im not a music critic, but all I can say is that Tango has a higher dimmension where it becomes universal and mayble the category of jazz (higher jazz that is) is best to classify it.

Tango is tragic and sensuous... listening to Piazzolla is like listening to classical music quintent.. at the same level it is..

5 out of 5 stars A must.......2005-11-03

This is music to breathe and dream to. Piazolla at his best is probably the most enchanting and transcendental. It takes a Master Extraordinaire to make music like this, Piazolla's recordings only get better with age and never outdated because it is made up of the spirit and passions of a life lived richly. The Melancholy laments of the Bandoneon is truly one of the most haunting, nostalgic most beautiful musical Innovations ever made and noone interprets the manic poetry of it like Piazolla. I can't say much more then what the others have said here but this belongs in every serious music afficianado's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The most passionate music I've ever listened to.......2004-08-27

"Tango: Zero Hour" is, according to Piazzola himself, his masterpiece. This album is second to none in passion and musicianship. Listening to "Contrabajisimo" and "Concierto Para Quinteto" and not shedding one single tear is a certificate of one's total lack of emotions.

I gave it four stars to encourage those who like to sit and listen to fine orchestras. This CD may be great for dancing if you are in the clsss with those who danced with the stars. My partner and I are early 80s and dance almost everything else. Then we decided to learn Tango. This album doesn't work for us.

I RECEIVED A CD, THE TANGO CD( THE BEST TANGO ALBUM IN THE WORLD EVER) WAS DEFECTUOUS, SINCE IT PLAYS ALRIGHT UNTIL THE 12TH SONG, BUT THEN THE SONGS STARTS GIVING WEIRD TONES. AND THE 2ND CD ACTS THE SAME WAY, SINCE MY TANGO ALBUM IS A DOUBLE CD.THE PROBLEM IS NOT FROM THE RADIO, SINCE MY OTHER PURCHASE FROM AMAZON IS IN GOOD SHAPE, AS AL MY OTHER CDS.
THE MUSIC ALWAYS STOPS PLAYING RIGHT AT THE SAME TIME OF THE CD, THE 12 TH SONG, SO ITS PRETTY MUCH A CD PROBLEM.
I DUNNO WHATS THE REFUND POLICY, OR CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER, ITS SO BAD , COS THIS TANGO CD IS GREAT. I ENJOYED IT MUCH , UNTIL.........

4 out of 5 stars My review is for ballroom dancers.......2005-09-15

If you're just learning tango and wish to practice on your own, this is a wise investment. You won't have to disrupt your practice running back and forth to your cd player to select tracks. You won't drive yourself nuts listening to the same song stuck on loop play. Basically, this is a good cd of classical, non-elevator tango music that does not beat you over the head with a nausiating DUM DUM DUM DUM beat. (Well, most of the songs do not.)

There are a few lousy tracks within this collection, but it has been my experience that with all cds there will always be tracks you tend to skip over.

Do not let the $14.99 price tag for a two disk set turn you off. This is good music.

I got the feeling that 1/3 of the title were included just to justify the double volume. I would a smaller number of tracks but with more passion.

Piazzola must be the devil.... cause he certainly captured the soul (of tango, that is!)

Brilliant music. Exceptional CD!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for the Piazzolla neophyte!.......2000-12-21

I have more than ten Piazzolla CDs and this is my favorite. It's actually the first one of his that I ever bought, and I think that this is probably the best CD that a beginner to Piazzolla and Modern Argentine Tango could buy. It has a generous sampling of the several hundred songs that Astor Piazzolla wrote in his life, and it consists mainly of live recordings, which adds to the intensity of each piece. Interestingly enough, there are nearly 200 CDs of Piazzolla music (if not more), and even the songs in the ones recorded by Piazzolla himself vary significantly from album to album. This one, however, is a real joy and will get anyone's toes tapping.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro!!.......2000-11-27

Oh dear God, how to describe the music that came out of this album? Maybe we should make an exception and allow a six star rating in this case. Astor Piazzolla is for me the best composer of the 20th century and one of the best of all time. The way he can make music dance in you head and trigger emotions from deep within you is stunning. It is impossible to describe the way he puts music together into some of the most powerful music ever heard and at the same time doing it in a way tango had never been done before. Maestro Piazzolla completely changed tango into something new, something some people don't even consider tango anymore. He'll shred your soul and make you lose all hope in your life and suddenly fill you with hope and a sense of awe. Every person who take music seriously and can appreciate art must own something by Astor Piazzolla; and feel the blessing of immersing in its brilliance.

Gustavo Santaolalla is a talented multi-instrumentalist from Argentina who has been extremely involved in bringing new sounds to an age-old culture. Playing a variety of stringed instruments including the guitar, the guitarron, the charango, and the ronroco, Santaolalla bridges the gap between traditional musics and forward-thinking compositions. He reveals an unusually progressive vision filled with cascades of chiming sounds and the understated influences of Japan, Africa, and Eastern Europe, as well as Latin America. Accompanied by his associate Anibal Kerpel on vibraphone and melodia, Santaolalla has made an instrumental album of intense passion and evocative songwriting. Gustavo's rapid picking and constant strumming of strings provide a solid foundation for his melodic innovations as clusters of notes rise majestically and then quietly fall away. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars magical south american guitar .......2007-01-10

This heavenly music is subtle and powerful at the same time. It makes you feel light and and slightly melancholic. It evokes the high land of South America.
This musician composed this type of music also for the movie 'motorcycle diaries'. The music has firm roots in the South-American Indian folkmusic.

5 out of 5 stars IF THERE'S AN ALBUM MADE IN HEAVEN, IT'S SURELY RONROCO.......2006-08-29

The title of this review says it all. This album is absolute heaven for one's mind, body and, most importantly soul. It is a heavenly melem for all of your heartaches, soothing your wounds and renewing you from the inside. Gustavo's music is like nothing's Ive ever heard before! Every time I listen to his albums, I listen to them from a new perspective and cannot get bored with one song or the other. It is inspiring in so many ways. I recommend it to everyone who is experiencing life from the inside, inspired by it in its every aspect. THIS ALBUM CHANGES LIVES.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2006-03-20

I would recommend this CD even if you have gotten the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. It contains the tracks that make this work complete, wholesome.

5 out of 5 stars Spread the word........2006-03-10

Like several reviewers, I first heard of Gustavo Santaolalla via Michael Mann's film 'The Outsider' which made expressive use of the track `Iguazu'. This album (from which 'Iguazu' is taken) is an work of stunning beauty. All the tracks are slow, haunting guitar-driven mood pieces composed almost totally in minor keys. I was expecting `Iguazu' to be the highlight but there are many tracks that are equally exquisite. I recommend this album unreservedly to anyone with an ear for a beautiful melody and a romantic soul - believe me, you will not stop playing this. Quite outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of the Andes.......2006-02-28

I originally bought this CD when it first came out as a result of a review I heard on NPR. Loved it first time but lost it in a move. I was reminded of it when I watched 'The Motorcycle Diaries' a wonderfully evocative memory to Che Guevara's early life before he joined Castro in the Cuban revolution. Santaolalla wrote the soundtrack to the movie, which perfectly matched it, but I wanted to get the original CD once again. Haven't regretted it for a minute. Living in Texas it's good to hear that Armadillos are used for something more useful than just roadkill. That's what Santaolalla uses as the body of his guitar/mandoline type stringed instrument throughout the CD. The whole CD gives a feeling of space, size and airyness. Go buy it. PS he's been nominated for an Oscar for the music for 'Brokeback Mountain' this March. Let's hope that he still manages to produce CDs in their own right in the future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-05-17

I am learning the tango and this CD is perfect introduction to the pantheon of tangueros! Excellent selections of tango standards and milonga favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Tantalizing Tango.......2006-02-04

The CD has nice songs. The only drawback is that only dramatic tangoes are included but not milongas and tango waltz

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-01-17

This music is boring. All tangos have the same tempo. No milongas. What a shame! Trying to do routines to this music would be a waste of time. This CD sounds like background music in a lounge.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for dancers.......2003-07-20

The price is temptimg and the music great. If you are a tango dancer dont think about it. If you are a piazzola fan forget it.
I guess the word classic tangos suits it fine plus the production is really good. A non-regreting buying choice i made.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great bargain.......2007-07-14

Clear and succinct instruction: as good as it gets. Each step is gone over thoroughly, with multiple views that facilitate learning. Though the music CD does not quite match the excellence of the DVD, this duo is a real bargain. For anyone wishing to look good in ballroom tango on the social dance floor, this and practice are all that is needed.

We found this set better than DVD's alone that cost five times as much. Plus, with this DVD, you get a CD that contains all the practice music you'll need. ...A great bargain, indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Great Deal.......2007-01-25

The DVD in this set gives you four beginner and four intermediate moves. The music CD that is also included provides you with decent tango music that has beats that are easy to follow. You get all of this for nine dollars, which is much cheaper than any other dance instruction DVD you will find anywhere. This DVD was a great help when I actually took a tango lesson because I already knew many of the moves. The only reason I didn't give this set 5 stars is that I was left wanting more. It turns out you can get more from the same company, but you will have to pay fifty dollars the next time around.

The dates and facts surrounding the birth of Carlos Gardel, even his real name and nationality, are still argued about--more than 60 years after his death in a plane crash. But his place as the greatest singer in the history of tango is indisputable. Gardel not only nearly singlehandedly defined the tango-cancion (sung tango) and set the standards of interpretation. For many, he embodied the very spirit of tango--urbane yet streetwise, romantic but also tough, sensual but oh-so-cool. This collection, smartly selected and reasonably improved aurally, offers ample proof. North American audiences may recognize songs such as El Dia Que Me Quieras (sung by Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias), Mi Buenos Aires Querido (Iglesias) and Por Una Cabeza (soundtrack True Lies). Gardel brings to his performance impeccable intonation, precise phrasing and just the right pathos. These are the definitive versions by a master at the peak of his powers. --Fernando Gonzalez

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you like tango, this CD is a must.......2007-04-29

Fantastic CD. Really enjoyed listening to it!

3 out of 5 stars The best of Carlos Gardel.......2007-03-28

Brings back lots of memories, but the recordings are old and dated, mono and scratchy, so as memorabilia, is a wonderful compilation, don't know if they could have improved the end product updating and cleaning the original sources.

5 out of 5 stars The Grandfather of tango!.......2006-01-10

There 's a famous Argentine aforism:"Gardel is like the good wine; everydays sings still better".

The tango is winter 's memory; unfinished happiness, indifference ' s smile, old livings and memories either pleasant or unpleasant. Single poetry masked by the collective stardom.

Carlos Gardel `s legend has enhanced through the years. His undeniable abilities and countless virtues, impeccable diction and stage presence gave the tango a special status that surmounted its intrinsic level (Borges called it once a reptile of brothel) and make the definitive leap in the good taste of every melomaniac around the world.

The tango as memory, nostalgia 's matrix, about what it could have been and was not. A musical genre that accounts the little and if you want insignificant anecdotes of unknown and crepuscular human beings; that revives those livings of our vanished childhood and youth; that reminds Mi Buenos Aires with the same sensation of desperate anguish interweaved with hopeless; the appropriate immigrant 's song.

A magnificent selection of Gardel , best known as "El morocho del abasto", where each June 24th of every year in many corners of the world a crowd of people gather with the only purpose to remind his memory.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best sound of the Carlos Gardel reissues.......2005-02-11

Yes, the recordings here are core treasures of Tango. But the audio processing causes there to be resonances at certain midrange frequencies that are harsh and irritating. Better sound, and twice the tracks for 1/3 more, can be found in "Lo Mejor de lo Mejor" (as it is listed on Amazon --- the CD actually is called "Carlos Gardel 40 Temas Originales").

    5 out of 5 stars Gardel rocks.......2002-05-17

What can I say, Gardel was the king!
