Maestro Lenny was at his best in this extroverted, highly rhythmic music. The Batuque by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez will be a discovery for most people, a tremendously exciting orchestral showpiece. There's lots more excitement in the pieces by Guarnieri, Revueltas (a stunning performance of the great Sensemayá), and two pieces by the tourist Aaron Copland. (This version of El Salón México is Bernstein's stereo recording; Sony has already reissued his earlier mono one.) The late Netania Davrath sings beautifully in the familiar Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Sony's remastering is really first- rate. But there should have been more than 53 minutes of music, even on this mid-priced reissue. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars An exotic delight.......2005-05-14

With the exception of the Copland pieces, these are the works of Latin American composers looking for--and finding--their own voice within the tradition of 20th century orchestral music. Four pieces are particularly noteworthy: the justly beloved Bachianas Brasileiras #5 (superbly sung by Natania Devrath), the propulsive Batuque, Sensemaya (a Mesoamerican "Rite of Spring"), and Chavez' "Sinfonia India." This last is not "misplaced geographically" (contrary to an earlier, otherwise helpful review); Chavez, writing in 1936, used the word "Indian" to refer to the native inhabitants of Mexico. He wrote that he and his colleagues in Mexico had to "free ourselves from the stuffy conservatory tradition, the worst kind of academic stagnation. We have found ourselves by going back to the cultural traditions of the Indian racial stock that still accounts for four-fifths of the people."

When I was a lad I went to a Young People's Concert in Manhattan. Bernstein trotted onto the podium and launched into Batuque, followed by many of the works on this disc. This recording was made right at that time of this concert and captures its joy, its sense of exploration, its energy.

4 out of 5 stars South of the Border, With Panache.......2002-01-11

Jaunty. Fanciful. Riveting. Mysterious. Ominous.
There's a very wide range of emotions embodied in "Latin American Fiesta", a first-rate tribute to five Latino composers (and one Gringo) represented within this excellent collection. Bernstein and the Philharmonic really lay into the pieces that call for it, so much so that you may glance over your shoulder during "Sensemaya". "Batuque" is commanding; "Dansa brasileira", playful and way too short. The last work, "Sinfonia India", is misplaced geographically (not by the composer's ethnicity), but it's a highly evocative journey into the Subcontinent and a fitting capstone.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable musical excursion.

5 out of 5 stars my hero, Maestro Lenny.......2001-02-25

The re-mastering of this CD is amazing, and these recordings deserved the technical wizardry. It's the kind of music Leonard Bernstein was at his most incredibly brilliant at...rhythmic, emotional, and full of energy.

His interpretation of Copland has always been known as the "definitive" one, and in these two pieces, you can see why. The next three selections are by Brazilian composers, the most well known being Villa-Lobos' "Bachiana Brasileira # 5", here sung so beautifully by Netania Davrath.

Silvestre Revueltas' "Sensemayá" is fabulous. Reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in parts, though 100 % Mexican in feeling. It throbs with vitality, and the intensity of its rhythms is astounding...it's also a hard act to follow, which is Carlos Chavez' lot here with his beautiful "Sinfonia India". This piece may take a few hearings to fully appreciate, as there's a lot going on in it, like complex counterpoint, etc.

In my student years, I found a way (not telling how !) to hear the N.Y. Philharmonic rehearse, and would sit in total awe of Maestro Lenny...his genius and his humanity. He was my first hero, and though I never met him, my "father figure". This CD just exudes his presence...it's a special treat for anyone who ever saw him "make music" in person, and experienced the magic of it.

5 out of 5 stars Netania Davrath is the star of this release.......2001-01-25

In addition to the review mentioned above, the recording of the Bachianas is the star here. Soprano Netania Davrath recorded this right after a performance with Bernstein in New York during one of her tours. This recording pops up in many anthologies which is great as that way it can be shared with more music lovers. Davrath is best known for her complete recording of Songs of the Auvergne on Vanguard. Enjoy Davrath along with these fine works from composers from south of the border. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental Favorite.......2006-11-30

My parents purchased this album back in the sixties, and I grew up listening to it. For this reason alone I love it. Even after all this time I still love these arrangements. Mr. Gould's orchestra give polished performances, the tone colors are varied and vivid. You will be carried to exotic locales by this music. It's a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Fun.......2005-11-23

More soothing renditions by Morton Gould and composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Andalucia" is simply beautiful on this album. It has a strong melody that would sound good in almost any setting. My daughter brought this in for her second grade class, and most of the kids an parents liked the music. Some of it is very cinematic, and I think that's what some of them reacted too...made then think of old films. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars interesting change of pace.......2003-11-06

I had originally purchased this CD because I thought the music was similar to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman (I made this assumption based on the picture on the jacket). I thought it was another "exotica" album. Boy, was I wrong! While the arrangements all have lush melodies, the music is symphonic in nature and have great orchestral arrangements. I like this CD a lot.

Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason Verlinde

3 out of 5 stars Good background music, but a little tame for latin.......2002-08-19

I expected a little more action. I tend to think of mariachi and I got village pan pipes.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother!.......2002-04-15

I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.

4 out of 5 stars A mood-lifter!.......2001-03-29

Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD from the Pops.......2001-02-07

The Boston Pops due a great job on this CD. I really like Batuque. If you are looking for a great CD that will really make you dance this is the one.

The islands of Cape Verde present a unique historical and cultural situation. Uninhabited until the 1400's, these islands were populated at first by Portuguese traders and farm owners, and then later by slaves from Africa as the Portuguese attempted to make a profit on these volcanic rocks that refused to be commercially farmed. During the 17th century, many of the Africans escaped to the hills where they held onto both ancient African customs and some of the Portuguese culture. It is in this setting that batuque and finaçon developed, awaiting Cape Verde's independence in the '70s. Batuque ("to beat") is a percussive musical form developed for dancing and for the islands particular storytelling, called finaçon. While this was traditionally a women's music, one of the few surviving purveyors of the form is a man, Ntoni Denti D'Oro. Playing his drum, accompanied by guitars, a one-string fiddle, and a chorus of women, he weaves complex tales full of hidden meanings in the Creole language of his country; defiant, sexual and religious all in one turn of phrase. The music is rhythmic and folky, a collision of African and European culture with free thinking artistry. --Louis Gibson

4 out of 5 stars Golden tooth, golden music.......2003-11-28

N'toni denti D'Oro (= Antonio with the golden tooth) is the only male performer of the old Capeverdean tradition of batuku. Here, he presents this style in both it varieties, sambuna and finason.
His group includes the rare cimboa, a one-string fiddle, which very few knows how to play properly today. N'toni (77 years old) is the rock star of the batukaderas - I saw him on a concert in Cape Verde - impressing! The girls were shaking, drumming to his directions.
The lyrics in batuku are about historical matters and more educational or moral advice. N'toni sticks to tradition. He prefers to stay away from politics. This is a very good introduction into batuku. I also recommend: Terrero's CD: Xubenga.

Anthologies of Latin American music seem to be a dime a dozen these days and tend to showcase the same coterie of giants. The joy of this Dorian release--beyond its stunning, full-bodied sound--is its inclusion of music from lesser-known composers, namely Arturo Márquez, Javier Alvarez, Marlos Nobre, and Alejandro Caturla. Carlos Chavez, of course, is represented on this disc--which comes as no surprise--but his Chapultepec is a trivial parade-float miniature, a seven-minute effervescence that leads, thankfully, to Oscar Lorenzo Fernândez's extraordinary Batuque, a colorful orchestral romp that is already a classic. Chavez fares much better on this disc with his orchestration of Dietrich Buxtehude's Chaconne in E minor. Credit for this disc's success goes to conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson and her firm command of this wonderful music. --Paul Cook

4 out of 5 stars Alvarez' Metro Chabacano is gorgeous ..........2006-08-29

I ran across this piece on a Deutsche Welle broadcast over PBS - this piece is so elegant, so perfect in its simplicity - an absolute jewel, among the finest string music I have ever heard. I fortunately had recorded it on tape and immediately replayed it. A gem, a rare find.

The rest of the cd - OK from what I could hear from the samples. Of course, not really sufficient evidence ... why they had to include Buxtehude ??? BTW the orchestra is absolutely first-rate. I would pay serious attention to other Dorian releases by them, especially from the better-known composers like Villa-Lobos and Chavez. But who kows - quite possibly there lurk one or more little-known gems like the 'Metro" in those too.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Cool.......2005-04-08

The CD is worth the price for the rendition of Marquez' Danzon #2 alone.

Maybe I am just a sucker for pieces based on Dance rythyms but I would rather listen to any of Marquez' Danzones than a Bach or Mozart symphony any day of the week. Even if that is the case, then I can assure you that if you prefer Berlioz, Stravinsky, & Ravel over Bach, Mozart & Beethoven than you will love this CD.

Its too bad these composers don't get their own album....it is something else to be in the courtyard of THE Zocalo listening to Marquez' four Danzones played back to back by the UNAM Chamber Orchestra in collaboration with the Orquesta de la Ciudad.

    4 out of 5 stars Gotta Danzon.......2002-09-10

This CD was a pig in the poke for me -- I'd never heard of any of the composers except for Chavez, or the orchestra, or the conductor. It was really for my sister, who teaches Spanish. But once I put it in my CD player, it stayed there for several days. I couldn't get enough of it -- especially the title work by Arturo Marquez. It's infectious and intoxicating! A few of the pieces are less interesting, but all are fun.
I've also found out a little about the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, and it's exciting to know that classical music is becoming an important part of life in Venezuela. Bravo -- or should I say ole'?

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary orchestral show-pieces from Latin America.......2001-04-22

When I first heard this extraordinay CD, I immediately selected in my CD player three works to be played again in the following order of my preferences: "Convergencias" by MARLOS NOBRE, "Danzón 2" by Marquez and "Janitzio" by Silvestre. Those three latin-american masterpieces are the best symphonic modern music I had ever heard in the last 20 years! the orchestral sound of the Simon Bolivar Symphony conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson is a joy forever! And Marlos Nobre became my favourite contemporary composer, after hearing this masterpiece of orchestral writing, of coerence, architectural construction and latin-american violence and brilliance. I have now three different CDs with different recordings of this modern masterpiece, one by Lemán Classics conducted by the composer and the New Music Philharmonia;another by Delos with Eleazar de Carvalho conducting the Paraiba Symphony, and the present CD which is a marvelous performance.

5 out of 5 stars More on the Chaconne.......2000-12-30

Excellent disc (if you enjoy modern classical music). I actually think the Chaconne was rightfully included, since it is Latin American in origin. Below is what I found in the Britannica:

"The sarabande and the chaconne were brought from Central America / Mexico before 1600. Both were considered outspokenly obscene in their suggestions of sexual encounters. They became extremely popular in the harbours of Andalusia, where they were polished and their pantomimic literalness somewhat moderated. From there they crossed the Pyrenees and were integrated into the canon of the French court dance."

5 out of 5 stars Roots That Bear Rich Fruits!.......2000-09-09

First off: this is not a "various artists" CD. Grupo Batuque is a collective of veteran Brazilian percussionists, drummers and musicians assembled by Joe Davis of the great Far Out label. This, their third album, is emphatically recommended to anyone interested in Capoeira dancing, or who conducts or attends dance classes with an emphasis on African dancing. This is a rootsy percussion-centric masterpiece guaranteed to strike a chord with all those that way inclined. It's also a great reminder of just how African-rooted Brazilian culture really is. Aspiring percussionists are also strongly advised to invest in this CD ASAP. It's a MUST!!!
