Although this CD has an interesting lineup of songs, I found the versions of the songs bland and uninspiring. The recording is thin sounding and lacks the rich full sound that makes the steel drums a wonderful instrument.

Album Description

Turn on the radio and there's a good chance that you'll find sounds of the Caribbean permeating the airwaves. From reggaeton and dancehall to soca and salsa, its influence is everywhere. Caribbean music is steeped in African aditions, incorporates European and Latin American sounds, and satisfies virtually any listening palate. With the pop charts currently reflecting love for these genres' growing appeal, Putumayo World Music's new collection, The Caribbean, delves into the roots of the music, its present and its future.

Some of the key artists and tracks on the CD are, The Skatalites, who helped pioneer and popularize ska around the world, contribution to the album, "Freedom Song" shows influences of American jazz, swing, and rhythm and blues. Stanley Beckford, an underground legend, grew up singing in his church choir and winning talent competitions. Now in his 60s, he has experienced a career revival after recording two critically acclaimed albums for French major labels. Breakout star Mika mixes the compass music of his native Haiti with influences of calypso, R&B, reggae and pop to create a gentle breezy groove.

Militant is quickly joining Sean Paul and other Caribbean stars with crossover appeal. This new artist struts his stuff on the track "Hot & Groovy." Using a sample from Putumayo recording artist Habib Koite's song "Saramaya", Militant creates a quintessential soca party song that erupted as an enormous hit in the Caribbean. The Caribbean party flavor of newcomers Jab Jab will also have audiences dancing. Based in Montreal, the band is a unique discovery by Putumayo's Jacob Edgar when he received a three-track demo. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to Wyclef Jean's Yéle Haiti charity in support of their development efforts in the Haiti.

Another nice collection by my world traveling companions at Putumayo! This offering travels all over the beautiful region showcasing the diverse talents and culture and rich history of this area. My only complaint is the brevity! Come on, Guys! Add another 3-4 tracks. We know there is lots of music out there. Liner notes are good, lyrics (and translations) would be better, but I don't want to nitpick. This is nice party music for this time of year and will be getting lots of play during our summer parties along with Putumayo's "South Pacific Islands" and "Islands" Keep up the good work! this c.d.and a cocktail;(may I suggest...) coconut rum and cranberry-tangerine juice. Enjoy! Summer's Comin' !!

Ignore the bad reviews. There is no background noise. The balance between the steel drums and the other instruments is just right. This is an older recording but the sound is clean and the playing is fresh and lively. A really great album at a really reasonable price!

This CD is okay but not quite what we wanted. It has more back ground beat than what we like. For us it is better if it is just the steel pans.

If you want to experience the pop and crackle of old vinyl, this is the rocording for you. This is clearly a poor job of analog to digital transfer. The music content is not too good either.

The collection is very good with a pleasant mix of fast and slow. My only negative comment is that the sound quality is not the best it could've been. But for a great steel drum collection, it's excellent.

This collection makes a strong case that New York has a more ethnically diverse population of musicians than any other city in the world. In what other place can you hear Albanian shepherds' ballads, Cantonese wedding marches, Irish fiddle tunes, and Haitian gospel music, all within a few blocks of each other? This two-CD set includes examples of all of these, as well as music from recent Indo-Caribbean immigrants, a Trinidadian-style steel-drum band, and selections from two separate tribes of Gypsies. I have lived in NY all my life, not in the city,(but very close). The one thing I have always loved about living here is its cultural diversity. People from all walks of life seem to immigrate here. This 2CD set proves that. This is a great world music collection, that includes many tracks by the Latino population. There is a combination of plena, bachata, salsa, merengue and more... From the Caribbean, there is the steeldrums of Trinidad, and Haitian rara(roots music). Asian-Americans contribute some instrumental pieces from Korea and China. Also included is: Celtic, Gypsy, Jewish, Greek, Albanian, and African music. This is a wonderfully inexpensive price for so many different types of music. If you want to learn a little more about the great city of NY, then pick this up!

Very hot compilation of the music of many cultures.......2001-08-23

The New York City Global Beat of the Boroughs stands out as a music compilation on which nearly every one of the 30+ tracks sizzle. I like the CD best because it delivers hot tunes that sound better with multiple listenings - while preserving true, traditional ethnic music styles instead of delivering watered-down, electronic "world fusion". Some of the tracks remind me of the most 'native' world music that a David Byrne or Paul Simon would collaborate on. The music includes Latin American, African American, Middle Eastern, European, and Asian styles. I've seen a related concert in New York City - the artists are equally interesting in person.

I gave this to my aunt for christmas and she raved about it. It's a great fit for tropical christmases. We don't see much snow in south florida and steel drums add a nice flair with the tropical setting.

It may just be me, but I was disappointed in this album when I received it. It just wasn't what I hoped it would be...most of the songs sounded similar and I believe I could have made a better choice. I guess I was looking for a little more "Buffett" in my Caribbean than I felt like I received with this selection...to each his own.

I really enjoy listening to Xmas classics on the steel drums. It really is 100% steel drums on many songs, with no vocals.

I would give this item 5 stars if the recording quality were great. Unfortunately, it sounds rather old and thin.

Even so, I'd buy it again knowing the way that it is.

Got this CD for a Caribbean themed Christmas party that I hosted! It was GREAT! It really gives you the feel of being in the Caribbean and all of your favorite Christmas songs! We even did the limbo to a few of them! If you want a true taste of the Caribbean at Christmas... this is the CD for you!

I may not be an expert on steel drums, but I do listen to Jimmy Buffett a lot! He has a great steel drum drummer. After listening to this cd, I gave it away in a white elephant gift exchange this past Xmas.

Well, after hearing their version of Toto's AFRICA on Radio Margaritaville, I, too, was hooked. I love it.

Be aware, however, that the recording quality is not the best in the world. While the music is crystal clear, it sounds like it was recorded with one mic in the back of the room, so there's plenty of "air" in the sound. You may like it, you may not. I'm just pointing it out.

If you're getting this to use as background party music, you can't go wrong. Here at the Tiki Room, it's in use whenever we have a party. People are always asking who that is when they get to Africa...
I also love driving the Tiki Van around Mayberry with it playing loud. It's like being on some weird asphalt party cruise. Just no booze or babes.

Nothing short of amazing. They are truely an orchestra.

If you like Caribbean sound, and you want a more polished production. "Pan Forever" fits the bill. There are nine tracks on this CD, and the tunes are blends of famous pop songs, the requisite Calypso and some jazzy stuff. The production is clean and professional.

The London All Stars Steel Orchestra has won the prestigious Lambeth Steel Band Championship and other UK contests as well. They represented Britain in the 1990 Steelband Music Festival in Trinidad-Tobago.
