Outstanding Resource - We LOVE This CD!.......2007-07-16
All the tunes are ones you will probably recognize - but hearing the words that go with the music and hearing them in *English* is so helpful! It has been really fun to find out what these songs are really about.
My kids and I often catch ourselves singing opera through the day now, which is really neat. It has helped build their understanding of music in many different ways, and has improved my oldest daughter's voice ability as she strives to keep up with the professional singers on the CD.
The music is beautiful, the words are lovely and give meaning, and this whole CD is just exceptionally good entertainment!

Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.

It's tempting to think these duets, which Handel composed at various points in his career, are just chips from the master's block. But they constitute a delightful hour's worth of music, and when sung with the vocal brilliance and stylishness displayed here by ten top singers in various pairings, they add up to one of those rare discs it's hard to stop returning to. Handel must have thought a lot of them too--since he reused some of this music for oratorios like Messiah--and turned to the chamber duet form in his last years as well. There isn't a weak link among the soloists, though the contributions of Natalie Dessay, Veronique Gens, and Sara Mingardo are especially noteworthy. Whether asked to sing plaintive laments or flashy coloratura displays, these well-matched voices thrill. The accompaniments (harpsichord or organ, lute and cello) are faultless. The appeal of this disc extends far beyond Baroque specialists to anyone who enjoys outstanding singing. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Not a good choice.......2007-02-07
Stellar Females Guide Handel's Lesser Known Arcadian Duets.......2005-05-27
All the women here are excellent. The particular standouts are French sopranos Natalie Dessay and Véronique Gens on the opening duet, "Ahi, nelle sorte umane" with their bright voices intertwined with deep, intense feeling; the lightness of Laura Claycomb's soprano matched with the superb fullness of Sara Mingardo's contralto on "Tanti strali al sen mi scocci" and again on the concluding "Sono liete, fortunate"; and the similarly contrasting performances of soprano Patricia Petibon and contralto Marijana Mijanovic on "A mirarvi io son intento". The two men featured are somewhat disappointing but only by comparison - tenor Paul Agnew sounds a bit unctuous and lead-footed against Petibon's ethereal silvery tones on "Caro autor di mia doglia", and countertenor Brian Asawa, despite a purity in tone, sounds dramatically constrained on "Conservate, raddoppiate", his brief duet with soprano Juanita Lascarro. Regardless, the overall mood of the recording is appropriately sonorous and for the most part, period-authentic except for Haïm's organ which is used to sparing dramatic effect. As she has proven with her wondrous direction of an equally stellar cast on the 2003 Virgin Classics recording of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas", Haïm provides intense musical leadership among a varied set of talents with the able accompaniment of her ensemble, Le Concert d'Astrée.
Something's not quite right in the state of Arcadia..........2004-04-30
I was... not entirely disappointed, but sadly not captivated.
I found some of the accompaniments to the duets to be heavy-handed and almost paternalistic in their approach, particularly when the organ was employed. And stylistically, some of the singing was just... wrong. In particular, the flights of Natalie Dessay (who has done some gorgeous things - her Lakmè is ravishing) jarred. On reflection, I do not consider Dessay to be an ideal singer for the repertoire - she does much better in the 19th century French works and in coloratura Strauss roles, where she shines like a cluster of diamonds.
Although some of the singing here with the various singers was beautiful, it was not uniformly good, and in particular the duet work seemed under-rehearsed. Tightness in ensemble singing, even when it's 2 voices as opposed to more, is a MUST. There was no true blend present with any of the duet singing, but this was a problem that occurred more in some of the tracks than in others.
I could recommend this disc for its rarity value - Handel's duets are splendid stuff! - but not for the performances in the main. I wish I could have been more positive. I can only say that at least this disc is mostly better than another recording of Handel duets which I possess. Perhaps this CD is worth having for the repertoire, and one can always skip the particularly "not very good" tracks...
You'll know them when you hear them. Just listen for the wobble.
Beautiful and artistic.......2003-12-29
I note it is diffucult for me to randomly select pieces from this album. It is best taken like a good meal, from beginning to end.

An excellent and exciting recording.......2003-10-18
I Fagiolini sing with pathos, passion, style, grace, fun and grit, when needed. The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble also makes very bold, impressive and colourful noises, too!
The whole thing is quite wonderful and it is clear to me that Andrea Gabrieli is a very worthy composer and I hope that these groups join together again and record more of this marvellous repertoire. Gabrieli wrote a large number of madrigals, possibly more than Monteverdi, and, judging from this recording, they are very fine and expressive pieces of music. Listen to the large madrigal - "O passi sparsi" - on this recording, which is done as a duet for countertenor (Robin Blaze) and high tenor (Nicholas Mulroy) voices with the full forces of the EC&SE (and transposed down a major 4th to make the two top lines of each choir fit the voices and instruments). This piece is almost operatic in its expressiveness. It makes me wonder what Andrea Gabrieli would have composed if he had lived on into the time of Monteverdi and the birth of opera - perhaps he would have given the young Claudio a run for his money?
Nonetheless, works like "O passi sparsi" demonstrate Gabrieli's skill at work painting and creating music of deep feelings.
Well done to you, Mr. Hollingworth, and your team.
Bravo!
I Fagiolini (not Robin Blaze)!.......2003-09-09
I conceived this recording and I direct the group so I'm not the most impartial person to review it - but it has been done with a lot of love, care and at times humour (including two filthy Venetian old men's songs) and I'd recommend it heartily. Go to www.ifagiolini.com for more info.

Booklet includes synopsis, biographies and an article by Steve Cohen about The Philadelphia Lyric Opera. (3 CDs)Corelli sang Gioconda many times with the Met but never elsewhere%GâÂÂ"%@apart from these two Philadelphia performances. These are his only available Enzos, and this is their first-ever release. The CDs were made from tapes supplied by Steve Cohen, the official recording engineer for The Philadelphia Lyric Opera.
Corelli uses a mechanistic vocal method involving manipulating the position of the larynx. In dramatic passages he sings with his larynx lowered to the bottom of his neck, to give his voice maximum heft, core and brilliance. In lyric passages he repositions his larynx somewhat upward.
He sings caressingly in the love scenes with Dunn and with anguish in the third act ensemble. In both performances he is in wonderful voice and even interpolates a high C in Act I and another in Act IV. Above all, as in no other role, he expresses blind fury, in his confrontations with Curtis-Verna and Tebaldi.

A Blast From The Past: Corelli And Tebaldi in Gioconda.......2005-07-31
I'm not much of a music expert per se, but this opera is, to me, a blend of verisimo opera (the vogue of the late 19th century and early 1900's) and Romantic Puccini-esque opera. Tebaldi and Corelli do justice to the lead roles and live up to their own hype. Further to singing with dramatic musicianship, they provide the work with beautiful tone, with the greatest example of how to sing in true Italian form- with deep sultry richness and vocal bravura. Very few tenors truly sing in the Italian manner, and the ones who did were old school- Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli and Giuseppe Di Stefano. Even fewer sopranos sang with Italian fire. Not even Callas had it. Rosa Ponselle and Leontyne Price had it and of course Renata Tebaldi. In this old recording, the sound is not perfect but has been digitally remastered from the old tapes and sounds fair and fresh. This is a rare recording in that it offers the same opera in two different performances. Both have Corelli singing the tenor lead, but the first has a no-name soprano in the lead soprano role. While she lacks the strength of La Tebaldi, that performance is blessed with mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn. Mignon Dunn was one of the more illustrious sopranos of the Golden Age of the Met, and her voice is velvety, deep and dramatic as well. In addition, she was a very attractive woman herself. She immerses herself in her role with dramatic flair. Mignon Dunn should be in everyone operaphile's top mezzo soprano list. Whenever you can, look for other recordings of Mignon Dunn.
The second performance is that of Renata Tebaldi in the soprano role. She interprets the character with more vocal splendor and musical artistry. Callas sang La Gioconda and her "Suicidio!" is far more dramatic but Tebaldi holds her own because she is in fine vocal shape, with none of the whoops and wobble that Callas often used in her singing. Hers is a pure, clean, smooth, creamy, Italian sound. The fact that Tebaldi sang the same roles at the same time (the 50's) as Callas is what lead to the rumored rivalry between them. I frankly believe that there was no rivalry between them. Both artists were simply different in their approach on singing opera- Callas was ever the actress, willing to sound ugly and harsh for the purely dramatic effect in the textual passages of the arias while Tebaldi would rather sacrifice credibility in character in order to sound gorgeous. This same beauty vs dramatic effect was present in the "other" famous rivalry - Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and in the tenor side Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavoratti. This performance is a must have if you're a Tebaldi fan. Tebaldi died around a year or two ago, and she is fondly remembered as a great soprano of the 20th century and her legacy lives on her recordings. Tebaldi and Corelli were on fire on stage, and they had really great chemistry - watch the filmed performance on DVD or VHS of their La Forza Del Destino of the 50's in order to see what I mean, or hear their recordings in which they sang together, among these a glorious Adrianna Lecrouvreur and Andrea Chenier. This is a terrific recording that ought to be more critically acclaimed.

Bag of tricks with a large hole.......2006-10-19
Schwarzkopf always sounds like the best singer in a local choral group who has learned enough vocal tricks to convince amateurs that she is a real diva. Her entire career is a testament to the gullibility of the general public. There are plenty of Mozart aria and lieder collections available . Listen to "Ridente la calma" by Lucia Popp or Barbara Bonney (clips available on this website) and then listen to Schwarzkopf again and you can readily hear what I am saying.
Great Mozart singing from early and late Schwarzkopf.......2006-07-13
The second half of the recital comes from 1967, a set of Mozart concert arias that ES made with George Szell as a follow-up to their bestselling Strauss Four Last Songs; there would also be a recording of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs with Fischer-Dieskau that I am not so fond of. In any event, Schwarzkopf didn't retain quite enough voice to throw herself into these arias, but her innate musicality and the fact that Mozart lay perfectly on her voice makes up for any flaws here--just don't expect the young Kiri Te Kanawa. The obbligato piano part in K. 505 is played by Alfred Brendel, who remains a bit cautious, as does Szell, no doubt in deference to Schwarzkopf.
In all, the incomparable Mozart songs should be considered the main attraction, while the concert arias are a souvenir bonus for those of us who cherished Schwarzkopf as an indispensable artist.
Beautiful!!!.......2006-06-08
At The Top of Human Voice.......2005-02-11
Schwarzkopf has got one of the most beautiful voice of the century. Almost all great musicians of her time flocked to accompany her either on the piano or with an orchestra. They included not only Geiseking here, but also Edwin Fischer and Furtwanglar just to name a few, and Glenn Gould admired her voice most amongst all classical singers.
Mozart is the biggest genius in the history of music; and Mozart's greatest achievement are his operas with all those beautiful and melodious bitter-sweet arias. Here with this CD with Schwarzkopf in her best, you will be introduced to one of the most beautiful peaks of the art of singing in human history.
Schubert's lieders are deservingly popular. But the more you listen to Mozart's lieders and arias like those on this CD, the more you will incline to think that the main reason why Schubert become more popular is, Mozart's arias, albeit more pleasing to the ears and soothing to our souls, are technically much more demanding, structurally or otherwise so that few singers could render them as perfect as Schwarzkopf.
The recorded sound of this CD is almost as perfect as any modern recording. For the piano accompaniment, however, all except one were by Geiseking, one of the few greatest German pianists who also excelled in Debussy. He enjoyed in his life time and thereafter such a big name (so much that even Martha Argerich desired and actually took lessons with him )! Yet unless you're really attracted to his playing, his role as an accompanist is really no more intriguing than Gerald Moore or even Parons. Needless to say, Brendel by then still under the wings of Edwin Fischer was in comparison to Geiseking, no more than a new boy. He was nevertheless shining here. It is also noteworthy that most of the arias here were recorded by Schwarzkopf in her very prime. In a nutshell, one can't expect more of this CD.
Wonderful.......2002-12-30
