4 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce Classical Music.......2002-06-05

This compilation Album represents the best that the Hooked on Classics series have to offer. THis is an excellent way to make Classical Music interesting to those who might think Classical Music is "boring".

Louis Clark has arranged some of the most popular composers and their most popular works in a way that will keep toes tapping and hands clapping to the fast tempos while some of the slower tracks (Hooked on Romance) become warm melodies to the ear.

As usual, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of londa, plays the arrangements with seeming ease and perfecton. The orcehstras ability to play these arrangements is more than just "playing along with a Rock beat" but, a wonderful demonstration of musical perfection.

Louis Clark createtd the hooked on Classics world, with Albums 1 - 3 and has been followed by others who try to copy his recipe (Hooked on Classics 4 - Hooked on Baroque and Hooked on Classics 5)but never seem to capture the gleam of the original three albums.

Take time to sit back, relax and let Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic Orcehstra take you on a Journey through the Classics with this wonderful compilation!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dusty Springfield.......2007-06-08

This is a great 2-CD set of Dusty Springfield, from when she first began recording through her tragically short career. For Dusty Springfield fans, the sound is crisp and clean and the songs bring back many fond memories...what's not to enjoy??

4 out of 5 stars Who Puts These Things Together?.......2005-10-20

While one can't argue with the price of this 2-CD set, one wonders why all these redundant compilations of Dusty's music are necessary? And, since most of them were released after her untimely death in 1999, there's a certain aroma of crass cashing in by serving what this writer calls the Necrophiliac Music Market. It seems every time a musician dies, their record sales skyrocket. It happened with Elvis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, et al. In other words, who's raking in this dough? Certainly not the late great artist. And, therein lies the tragic irony of Dusty Springfield. It would appear Dusty has had more albums released after her way too early demise than she ever did in life. This is but one of many postmortem compilations floating around.

While the song choices cover just about every phase of Dusty's 40-year career, including her early days with The Springfields, their chronology has been totally ignored. Why this album doesn't begin with the Springfields' tracks followed by Dusty's first solo hit "I Only Want To Be With You" defies logic. Why the first disc ends with the Kurt Weill-esque "Soft Core" and the second disc begins with the insipid, non-Dusty hit "Close To You" is but one example of the disjointed, herky-jerky musical progression of this album. With no prevailing theme and no natural segues, this album leaves the listener confused and unsatisfied.

This writer gave it 4 stars only because it's Dusty. However, if you're truly a Springfield aficionado, might I suggest you pay the extra money and purchase the brilliant 4-disc compilation, "Simply Dusty" - the nearly 100 track, well-thought-out, chronological remastered compilation of Dusty's finest work.

Dust was one of the 20th Century's most gifted vocalists/musicians. While this album will give the listener more than a glimpse of her incredible talent, the way this set is organized will not accord the new Dusty Springfield fan the opportunity to hear how Dusty grew and changed as an artist. "Simply Dusty" tells the whole story - this set is merely disjointed fragments of a fantastic talent's life's work.

5 out of 5 stars Great 2CD set for Dusty fans and afficionados.......2005-03-06

"Classics and Collectibles" isn't simply yet another Dusty compilation cos it offers the original now-rarely-heard mono mixes of all except three of her British 60s singles and some genuine rarities that should appeal to fans and afficionados. Her biggest hits - inevitably the big ballads - are collected on the "Classics" CD. Her less well remembered hits - mostly uptempo numbers - are culled to accompany the rarities on the "Collectibles" CD.

If I had to pick one song from the "Classics" CD that truly stands out, it's the mono mix of "Goin' Back" - it's a thrilling experience listening to it because this long forgotten singles mix is aurally so different from the conventional stereo mix we have come to know and love.

The "Collectibles" CD is for afficionados where the goodies are at. Rarities to set the hearts of fans aflutter include "They Long To Be Close To You" with its Bacharach-styled musical intro restored, "The Corrupt Ones" preceded by a sequence of atmospheric studio chatter, an unedited "Heartbeat", alternative vocal takes of "Nothing" and "If Wishes Could Be Kisses", "Standing In The Need Of Love" (possibly the first song Dusty ever recorded as a solo artiste in late 1963), the original soundtrack version of "Sweet Ride" in terrific stereo, the rare singles mix of "Little By Little" (with distinctive backing vocals that go "ooh ooh" mysteriously excised from the stereo mix) and a much stronger stereo mix of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" featuring alternative vocals from Dusty and audible background singers to close the CD. For completists, there's also the rare but much maligned "Sometimes Like Butterflies".

To cap it all, Universal used a rare but beautiful shot of Dusty (circa 64/65) indulging her musical tastes in her Baker Street flat. For once, the record company is making an effort with the packaging.

A great product. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Gems!.......2004-12-14

What a fabulous collection this is! Now, though I am not happy that they released some of her rare classics in mono mixes, I am still - however - glad that they put some huge rarities on here.

Awhile back, I ran across her 'Stay Awhile/I Only Want to...," CD, and found the unreleased song 'Standing in the Need of Love' just wonderful. Too bad it wasn't released years back when it was recorded. The other thing I like are the never-before-released stuff: The full-edit of '(They Long To Be) Close To You,' the stereo soundtrack version of 'Sweet Ride,' a previously unreleased song, 'I Have Found My Way Through the Darkness,' an alternate vocal take of 'I Am Your Child,' the single mix of Dusty's 1978 comeback song, 'I'm Coming Home Again,' another unreleased song, 'Sweet Inspiration,' an unreleased edit of 'The Corrupt Ones,' and, uh, at long last... the unreleased stereo version of Dusty's timeless hit, 'I Just Don't Know What To Do with Myself.' I am so glad that this is finally being issued; at last!

Get this CD, folks! I promise you... you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A Release With More Questions Than Answers.......2007-02-23

It is a bit surprising that a bootleg release taken from a concert is so readily available, as Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider have taken tremendous strides over the years to protect the artistic integrity of the band.

Taken from a 1975 concert, the four cuts sound as if they were recorded directly from the sound board with no post-production work. The cuts are Kometenmelodie, Autobahn and Morganspaziergang (Part 1 & Part 2). Though the title for the last number may be incorrect, it could be the way the band had it identified on the song list.

Concert Classics is really of interest to Kraftwerk fans and demonstrates how transfering the studio work to a venue was difficult back in the day. At one point, Hutter apologizes to the fans for the technical glitches.

With the brevity of the CD - and Morganspaziergang Part 2 being faded out - it makes one wonder if the entire concert was recorded, or this snippet was the only material that made it to tape.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2005-10-17

This is what I would call "classic" Kraftwerk, Kometenmelodie, etc, meaning their work before The Man Machine and Computer World. It's a very good album. It is recognizable as the song from the studio album, but has enough live improvisitation to make it interesting. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good CD.......2003-05-13

A short but very good recording of Kraftwerk in concert. There are a few pops and buzzes that in no way take away from the music. Other than that the sound of the disc is clear. The songs were played in a crisp, spirited, and professional manner. Kraftwerk obviously wanted to get them right.

I played the disc more than once and still want to hear it again. It sounded to me that they enjoyed playing that show, and were having some fun as well. Nothing wrong with that.
Makes me wish for more live work from Kraftwerk.

5 out of 5 stars Wish there was more.......2003-01-10

Well, a slice of live KW from their early period. The technical shortcomings of this recording are soon forgotten as the music takes you into the surreal world of Ralf and Florian. I always wondered how they did it live. Anyhow, after you've heard Autobahn and other albums from this period, get this album. The sound is actually quite good, very stark with no post-production so it's very honest. The performances are excellent, there is of course some improv and the versions differ from the originals enough to stand alone. Also, listening to this you can appreciate the fact that the audience was hearing and watching something extremely unique at the time, a live band playing totally electronic instruments. There is also an intimacy of the performance that is nicely captured on this recording, which doesn't seem to have any reference as to where/when it was recorded. The technical shortcomings are a bit of hiss, some hum, but I found that once they get rolling on a tune it's not that noticeable. Recommended for KW fans of any period.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for devout Kraftwerk fans, 3 to 4 stars for others........1999-01-11

Finally a live Kraftwerk CD. Now if only a CD of their 1998 tour were released. This is an excellent CD for hearing Kraftwerk before they were the extremely polished live act they are now. The album starts with Ralf Hutter saying, "We're going to play a song called Kometenmelodie", followed by bells, a synthesized voice (Florian Schneider) and some classical organ segueing into Kometenmelodie. Kometenmelodie on this release is actually parts 1 and 2 from the Autobahn album and the only word to descibe it is beautiful. The electronics combined with glockenspiel make this a truly pretty and warm song. "Kometenmelodie" alone is worth the price of this CD. Next is "Autobahn", which sounds surprisingly good considering the level of technology available at the time. The perscussion and car sounds are just one of the highlights of this Autobahn version. If you believe the information on the CD, "Morgenspaziergang" parts 1 and 2 complete the CD. This is incorrect. After Autobahn comes "Klingklang", a dreamy and slighty hypnotic piece with the glockenspiel taking the lead. "Klingklang" is from a pre-Autobahn album. This gives many a look at Kraftwerk in their experimental stage. It's a very pleasant and relaxing song. Closing the album is "Tans Musik". It's a happy sounding song with more glockenspiel, electronic keyboard and percussion. It's a nice ending for an enjoyable album. For some reason, "Tans Musik" ends by being faded out. That's a strange way to end a live album. One of the charms of this CD is the long pauses, technical problems, clicks and pops as the next song is being prepared and the conversations in the background between songs. Ralf Hutter even explains to the audience the reason for a long delay; a problem with the electronic drum kit. This album is essential for the true Kraftwerk fan. Fans who's obsession with Kraftwerk started after this period and think of Kraftwerk only in terms of "Computer World", "Radio-Activity" and "Man-Machine" may not be as enthusiastic as me. I love this CD. If it were an LP, it would be unplayable by now because of wear. Then again, I could say that about any of my Kraftwerk CDs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a deal!.......2005-11-15

What a deal. You get the very best of the worlds greatest rock and roll band Aerosmithat the height of their carear in the 1970's and a classic live album of the band from the 1980's and all together for a pretty low price, what a deal!

This is Aerosmiths great hits from 1973-1987 (not 1988!!!) and you get it all. 'Dream On' 'Walk This Way' 'Let The Music Do The Talkin' its all here. Every song on the album is a classic. The original greatest hits left off over half of these songs. No 'Let The Music Do The Talkin' 'Mama Kin' 'Lightening Strikes' (even though it wasnt really a big hit). And it also had poor edits on 'Kings And Queens' and 'Sweet Emotion' cutting off the classic intros and killer jams at the ends of the songs. Well this version still does that but it is still good.

Aerosmiths Classics Live is also included here. While this is not one of Aerosmtihs best live recordings its still a Aerosmith classic and is essential to all Aerosmith and rock and roll collections. Some songs were recorded with Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and some are with out and have Rick Dufey and Jimmy Crespo playing guitar, while that is my biggest complaint because Joe Perry is my hero and I dont think you can have Aerosmtih with out Brad Whitford and certainly not without Joe Perry, as I am sure most will agree. My other small complaint is these are bad selections, I mean Steven is really high and the band isnt really tight, they could have been better but they were all high or drunk or both. But these small problems dont bother me too much because I still think this is a great live album from Aerosmith.

So to conclude this is a great deal you get Aerosmtihs best and Aerosmith live, for the average fan you couldnt want more, but as a hardcore fan like myself I must recomend to you that you buy all the bands albums as they are all truly fantastic with the exception of Rock And A Hard Place, which is still pretty good in itself.

Don't expect this to be a collection of top opera stars. It is Sarah Brightman. And it is a great Sarah Brightman. At first it seems relaxing. However you can get caught up in the music and find that instead of backgrounds music you are listening to Sarah. A real plus is the fact that all the tracks fit together; you are not going to find the odd track that has horns or drums. I am not going to go through the list or the technical of this CD. Let's just say that it is well worth the price.

Sarah Brightman was a name I heard on occassion. And when I did, it was linked to Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, after buying her CD "Timesles" I fell in love with her music. I now have 3 of her CD's the latest being -- "Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection". However, I do think that "Classics" is by far the BEST. Her choice of songs are perfect. I highly recommend any of her alburms. She is good music to relax to after a bad day. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the best of gifts -- MUSIC BY SARAH BRIGHTMAN

5 out of 5 stars Bassey sings the standards!.......1998-09-10

This 24 track compilation recorded between 1961 and 1968 shows Bassey at her best, singing such classics as What Now My Love, her No5 UK hit from 1962 as well as No Regrets and Tonight, both UK hits in the mid 60's. Other popular tracks from that era include Moon River and The Days of Wine and Roses. Bassey gives her own unique treatment to standards such as Fools Rush In and The Nearness of You and includes some rarer tracks such as I Believe In You and Let's Start All Over Again. The recordings here do not suffer from the shrillness/over production found in some of her work from this period.

    4 out of 5 stars A chance to delve.......2006-10-03

Apart from acting as a useful sampler to newcomers to early Motown, the Early Classics series also serves the useful purpose of putting back into catalogue some B-sides and album tracks that cannot otherwise be found on CD, despite the lumbering re-issue programme currently underway.

More than any other performing artist, Smokey Robinson was responsible for getting the Motown imprints off the ground with founder Berry Gordy, his administrative and business skills being matched by his talents as singer, writer, producer and arranger. All of these are clearly evidenced by the 18 tracks on offer here, including eight A-sides, though all of these
are readily available elsewhere. The set begins with the timeless single Tracks Of My Tears and goes out with a bang on the fabulous Going To A Go-Go.

There are three non-album B-sides here: You Never Miss A Good Thing (B-side of I'll Try Something New), If Your Mother Only Knew (B-side of Way Over There) and Would I Love You (flip of That's What Love Is made Of). Would I Love You can be found on Lost And Found - Along Came Love in a longer mix, and in a new stereo mix on The Motown Box, but the others don't seem to be currently in catalogue. The other B-sides also appeared on albums, but not all of these are in print at the moment.

Therefore this album affords a unique opportunity to hear tracks from Cookin' With The Miracles, I'll Try Something New, The Fabulous Miracles and The Miracles Doin' Mickey's Monkey. I had never heard Determination before, knowing it only in a later version by the Contours. I was especially pleased to hear the three dance tracks from The Miracles Doin' Mickey's Monkey, in stereo mixes, these being Major Lance's Monkey Time, the Orlons' The Wah-Watusi, featuring a rare lead vocal from Claudette Robinson, and the Holland-Dozier-Holland original I Gotta Dance To Keep From Crying. Also in stereo are the five tracks from the album Going To A Go-Go, though this album is easy to obtain. Motown love their mono mixes and all the other tracks included are not in stereo.

The earlier tracks, both ballads and up-tempo rockers, have quite a raw quality, which is precisely what I like about them. They have a passion and a lack of inhibition that is far removed from the music Smokey and the Miracles were to make later in their careers. A recommended delve into a rich back catalogue, especially when available so inexpensively.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential collection.......2004-10-06

I own many albums by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, but out of all of the albums and collections, this is the one that I will listen to most often. The songs on here are all essential, and some of them are very difficult to find otherwise. This album comes with my highest recommendation, and if I had to own just one Miracles album, it would be this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of Miracles' output between 1960 and 1967,.......1999-08-03

A wonderful import album for the Motown Fan. This collection does give you different tracks than that of the also wonderful 35th anniversary box set. This disc features the ballad "Would I Love You" from 1964 which was left off the box set. Other cuts like "If You Mother Only Knew" and "Such Is Love, Such Is Life" give the listener a chance to experience the maturation of Smokey as a songwriter and singer. Recommended for the Motown fan like myself.

3 out of 5 stars Fills in some of the gaps on my collection.......2005-04-13

I was really excited to get this one but after listening, I am somewhat disappointed. Convertion and Cheryl Lynn, Candido, Billy Ocean and Change excellent choices; Sandee, SoulIISoul pretty good but the rest are warm up songs for other DJ's that know better. Not sorry I bought it but not happy with song selection

5 out of 5 stars Remember Back in the Day..........2003-11-26

    Remember Back in the Day...
when you would by an album and listen to it over and over and over? This is the first time since i was a teenager that that's exactly what I did... and continue to do. Da Knuckles man is pure genius. Period.

    5 out of 5 stars Godfathers taste.......2003-08-21

There is not much to say regarding this collection: If you know Frankie, the godfather of house, you definitely know you can trust him and his dj-experience since the 70's about what's HOT and what's NOT. - Worth purchasing if you are into deep (house),classics and disco.

4 out of 5 stars Frankie Knuckles - Collection of Classics.......2003-03-26

CD is good, and has a few memorable old school house jams-Back in the day Paradise Garage style songs. Was expecting just a tad bit more from the CD, but it is still worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Party Till You Drop.......2002-08-10

What more can be said about Frankie Knuckles. Growing up in Chicago during the (radio station) WBMX era, Frankie's was a household name. This cd set further demonstrates how that was possible. Not only was the sequencing of the songs brilliant but the mixing was right on -- especially on Disc One (where he has the unenviable task of beat matching disco records: that usually involves live instruments). Old School Househeads will really enjoy this double set!
