1 out of 5 stars super sarod, sloppy sitar.......2003-10-25

Listening to this cd one wishes he could just hear the impeccable sound of the sarode by Tejendra Majumdar and somehow be able to block the sitar. The playing of Tejendra majumdar reminds us of the Late sarode Maestro Vasant Rai who played the most beautiful meends and slides.Tejendra like Pandit Vasant Rai concentrates in the form and depth of the raaga unlike other sarode players who rush into fast techinical aspects right away. However listening to this album one can hear it is possible for a highly trained classical musician such as Tejendra Majumdar to be able to play with a non classical or folk musician like Shujjhat. An intresting duet would be Tejendra Majumdar and Ustad Shahid Pervez Khan Saheb (According to the times of india one of the greatest living sitarist) here Tejendra would be able to unfold his true abilities.
I reccomend this album because the sarode is just superb

4 out of 5 stars An excellent "sequel" to Charukeshi!.......2003-08-03

Until today I hadn't listened to any Hindustani music for quite a while (aside from the Bhattacharya-Brozman cd, Mahima, which isn't straight Hindustani). Just not in the mood, I guess. I didn't necessarily think I was in the mood today either, but I saw this on one of my shelves and decided to pop it in since I hadn't heard it in so long.

I made an excellent choice, if I do say so myself!

First thing is first. I'm not a fan of the way this cd is listed on this site. This is not just a Shujaat Khan cd. This is one of the jugalbandi (duet) cd's between Shujaat Khan (sitar) and Tejendra Narayan Majumdar (sarod). They are the best and most accomplished jugalbandi of their generation. This is their 2nd of 3 cd's. I think they have 3 now... the two I have had for a couple years and then a newer one.

Here we have Shujaat, Tejendra, and Samar Saha (tabla) taking us for a ride in Raga Lalit. It's been an equally long time since I listened to Shujaat and Tejendra's Raga Charukeshi cd so I won't be giving a real head-to-head comparison but I remember loving that one enough to get this one.

These two just have something together that can't be put into words. Besides just the fact that I am a sucker for the sarod-and-sitar combo, these 2 guys are excellent together. I think this one really starts to take off around the 10 minute mark. The tail end of the alap is gorgeous, and the gats do not disappoint.

If you've never heard a jugalbandi before, this would be a fine place to start, and if you've heard these 2 separately but never together, you really should get this.

Go for it! The greatest living Sarodiya alive! The taans, gamaks...everything is superb. Two superb morning raagas with the emotions of longing...beautifully depicted by Pt. Brij Narayan. Zakirji provides excellent tabla accompaniment.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2006-07-18

I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN GETTING AHOLD OF THIS PYRAMID RECORDING (MARWA) I HAVE A STAGGERING COLLECTION OF RAGA MUSIC AND WOULD READILY SWAP COPIES WITH SOMEONE.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Performance.......2000-12-13

While Ustad Ali Akbar Khan remains the undisputed world master of Sarod, Brij Narayan is certainly a force to be reckoned with. In this recording, he brings a youthful vigor and intensity into his playing that makes the hair on the back of my kneck bristle. Now add Zakir Hussain, who is arguably the worlds best percussionist, and you have an intensely satisfying performance.

These two also teamed up on the CD "Indian Classical" (Pyramid Records)which includes an an awe-inspiring rendition of the labyrinthine Raga Marwa. Also highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Flute.......2004-01-25

Hariprasad Chaurasia is undoubtedly the foremost proponent of Indian classical flute music. His work rate and output has been immense, and this is reflected in the number of CDs featuring his bansuri. But he is not a studio musician or a panderer to western taste, he is to be seen and heard at many concerts and festivals in India, where he faces the informed and critical audience regularly, and woos them with his superb long raga performances.

We are fortunate to have in this recording a lengthy exposition of one raga, Lalit. Too often Hariprasad's CDs are issues or reissues of short and comparatively shallow performances, but in this Nimbus recording, although it is studio-based, we can get a glimpse of a full performance of what is a beautiful but difficult morning raga.

For more than half the performance we are treated to a leisurely examination of the character of Lalit in the unmetred alaap, followed by the jor, with metre but still unaccompanied.

We then hit a highlight of the performance, a stunning entry by tabla player Anindo Chatterjee, who introduces the taal then gives a dazzling solo before Hariprasad takes up the the bandish in rupak (7-beat) taal. Anindo is a superb accompanist and his crisp playing forms an ideal counterpoint to hariprasad's development of his melodic improvisations. In the final quarter of the performance a fast 16 teental returns us to more well-trodden taal territory for the expected fireworks of a conclusion which shows off Anindo's skill and musicality as well as Hariprasad's unique technique in jhala, with an amazing breath and tongue control over his instrument.

A minor criticism is that this 1988 CD shares with some others of Nimbus Record's studio recordings an echoing acoustic ambience dulling the sparkle of the sound of both flute and tabla, but this is a small price to pay for an excellent performance.

5 out of 5 stars Lalit.......2004-10-06

This CD features Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, performing the difficult dawn raga Lalit. Mashkoor Ali Khan is one of the foremost exponents of the Kirana Gharana. Blessed with a sonorous and melodious voice with crystal clear clarity he is renown for his erudite expositions of ragas. The result is a moving performance which ends with virtuostic taans delivered at breakneck speeds, without ever sacrificing technique or clarity. A performance not to be missed!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing performance.......2005-10-09

This is an exquisite performance indeed. This is one of those few recordings of Sitar music that I truly treasure. His Alaap technique is solidly based to the Dhrupad tradition of Vishnupur and Manilal Nag is a true master of the instrument. Many a time a solid Alaap can be ruined by a poor Gat, not in this case. He chooses beautiful compositions to accompany his excellent Alaap. This one is a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars nicely different.......2001-08-05

Lalit is a fairly familiar raga. Manilal Nag renders it with skill and beauty on this fine recording. His treatment is more delicate and expressive than the usual performances of Lalit. The tabla player isn't bad either. This CD is well worth owning, especially if the only sitar you are acquainted with is the style of Ravi Shankar.

4 out of 5 stars Unique recording from a virtuoso.......2004-01-21

Ram Narayan is acknowledged as the greatest exponent of the sarangi. He is a formidable virtuoso of this notoriously difficult instrument, and his technique is spectacular and unmatched.

This performance dates from 1987, but is still, to my knowledge, unique in presenting a recording of sarangi at the length of over 73 minutes, ie approaching concert length for a single raga. More remarkably, although this is a studio recording, the sleeve notes tell us this was played without edits or retakes, and this adds a special dimension to the atmosphere of the performance.

The uninterrupted format gives the opportunity to hear a leisurely and detailed exposition of the raga, and this is the best insight you will get outside of the concert hall into Ram Narayan's musical and technical virtuosity. The raga - Lalit - is itself a difficult raga to perform and communicate. It has an unusual tone material or scale, and although it does not convey all its beauty at first meeting it has considerable serenity and charm.

In this performance a lengthy alap leads down and up the sarangi's registers until it almost imperceptably converts to a jor. The pulse of the jor is often hidden by the dramatic sweep of the tans which are Ram Narayan's trademark. After almost 45 minutes we have the tabla entry, and the performance continues in a slow beautiful teental bandish. Ram Narayan constructs variations of ever increasing complexity, with increasing length and speed of improvisation. His control and accuracy are staggering as he brings the recording to a close. Suresh Tawalkar on tabla provides a sensitive accompaniment and when invited contributes some fine solo work. A pity only that the length of a cd doesn't permit a further medium or fast gat!

This is maybe not the best introduction to sarangi for those unfamilar with the instrument. Ram Narayan's style is always superbly controlled, never flamboyant and audience-wooing like that of some lesser players. This can make his playing sometimes seem austere at first hearing. But this disc will repay repeated listening, and at each listening admiration for his playing will grow.

A minor criticism is that this is not one of Nimbus Record's best CDs soundwise, the studio ambience dulling the sparkle of the sarangi and the crispness of the tabla, but this is a small price to pay for the unique nature of the recording.
