Same quality as always.......2007-06-27

I always find it interesting when people pan these albums, I mean seriously even if it's not your favorite it should get a minimum of 3 stars just for the quality of the music and honestly how can you know in one day if you are going to like it over all. Good music takes time to settle in and establish itself, if you want disposable pop, you are in the wrong place. 1 star would mean a terrible album and this is not that from any angle, like it or not the musicians are all top notch. That being said, this is exactly like versions 1-8 before it, so chances are if you like them you will grow to like this. You may prefer others, but they are all very similar. This one has some hauntingly beautiful music and some thumping chill burners. It's a very good selection for the buddha bar family. Highly recommended although not at $64, you can download it for much less.

I get so excited when the new Buddha Bar CD's come out and rush to get them as fast as possible. This time and the last few hasn't been as deep and strong as the ones in the past. Still a nice collection of unique music but a bit of dissapointment for me.

Sorry to say, buddha bar 9 is the most dissappointing in the series.

Ravin continues to amaze me as a DJ starting with his early days on the George V record label. His style continues to evolve from one album to the next and he has delivered yet again. Though Buddha Bar III is still my all time favorite out of the previous 8 albums, I can see myself making this one a close second. Sophisticated mixes with delicate layers laid with artistic flair that only a true artisan can enamor. This series has gathered a lot of fame over the years, and I am really glad that Buddha Bar IX is here to keep that flame alive. Buy this album without an apprehension...pure sonic bliss.

Largely the work of formidable musician-arranger Mulatu Astatqe, the 14 instrumentals here were originally issued on two LPs in 1972 and 1974 in Ethiopia, and represent a curious blend of soul-jazz and R&B with just a smattering of Ethiopian roots breaking up the stabbing horn lines, wah-wah guitars, and simmering electric piano. Curious, because at the time jazz was not very popular in Ethiopia, but that is no reflection on the quality of these primitively recorded sides of idiosyncratic Afro-funk. The grooves are long and laconic, the sound reminiscent of Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" paired with Cannonball Adderly and Roy Ayers. But, as with all things Ethiopian, the music retains its own unique and unmistakable identity, one somewhere between a late-night jazz hole-in-the-wall group and a supper club belly-dancing combo. There are some very inventive arrangements and vigorous soloing, rendering a highly articulate and listenable music that was, at the time, doomed to go nowhere. I bought this CD on a whim after it was recommended by Amazon, and I really like this album. Fans of Fela and other Afro Jazz / Afro Pop will probably like this one. The difference is that this is EAST African. While the music is primarily jazz and R&B, there are very clear local influences, which sound somewhat Middle Eastern to my uninitiated Western ears. It's unlike any other CD that I've ever heard, but it's familiar sounding enough to enjoy right away.

The sound quality is what it is! It's from Ethiopia more than 30 years ago! The sound quality is relatively primitive, but it's not something that should keep the open-minded listener from thoroughly enjoying this music. I could even argue that the sound gives it another unique touch.

My daunting challenge for me now is to determine which one of the other 19 volumes of this series to get next.

This is powerful, mystical, ancient, ethereal, psychedelic stuff, wrapped in the raw familiar shapes of jazz, blues, funk, and pop. The horn melodies are dark and hypnotic, punctuated by guitar tones ranging from raw and distorted to reverb wah-wah, joined by electric piano, flute, and various percussion. I love most of the pieces, I think I realized around track #4 that this was special. And listen to track 5, the horns kick it off for the first 2 seconds, then they go away until a sax comes in at 1:22 and plays for awhile as the rhythm just pounds away in the background, finally the horns rip back in at 2:20 and keep at it until the end with a great repeating riff. The last track even approaches a sort of Stooges 'LA Blues'.
I also really love the Ethiopiques albums with Mahmoud Ahmed, I think they are #6 & 7 in the series.
The real charm of this music comes from the way it sounds, the way it was recorded. Raw and low-fi and brimming with soul, the needle pushing into the red. Dig it.

Where have these guys been all my life........2006-07-27

I got this CD after viewing Broken Flower, the movie. I loved the soundtrack and went to Amazon to find the CD. They helpfully showed me the Ethiopiques CD, and I liked their cuts on the movie soundtrack, so I thought I'd take a chance. Everyone I play it for wants to know more about them. I know very little, but love everything on this CD. I will definitly try more of their stuff. My daughter says, "this music makes me happy."

Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.

A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals. I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father! Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it. Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.

This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...

Slack key has come into it's own, many prominent guitar players are following these talented Hawaiians around, learning their new tricks and their old traditional ways. (In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)

This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.

That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise!

Top quality Salsa in an unforgettable selection.......2007-05-25

As you can see, it would result unuseful any speech about the quality and historical significance of all these top songs and also about the artists (all of them stars around the world). Everyone is a must-have song in any collection of this kind of music. It is a lovely selection recorded with original sound and in a very danceable sequence. Very difficult to say what is better than other but the only song a little bit "out-of-focus" is "Lloraras" because of that it has been recorded live and the sound is not original (but excellently interpreted by Oscar de Leon, as well). Strongly recommended!!!

This is a release that has got to be heard...a smoker front to back. Every single track included is among the best salsa ever, every single track is on the mark. All of the songs were top hits on their own and are now included here in one cd. The line-up alone is testament to it's dancing power. The songs in this cd have both Puerto Rico's grooving criollo style of salsa and New York's funkier, jazzy style. From New York City: Ruben Blades, Cheo Feliciano, Hector Lavoe; Jose 'El Canario' Alberto; Tito Puente/Tony Vega; Richie Ray; Larry Harlow; Ismael Miranda. For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's "Breezin'," a lite-funk relic from 1976, or "Emily" from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. It reaches back to 1983 to remind us of an ahead-of-its-time display of Celtic mysticism from Clannad ("Theme from Harry's Game"), and it both opens and closes with superb selections from one of the genre's most admired artists, Loreena McKennitt--very appropriate since, one could argue, discussions on the future of New Age should both begin and end with McKennitt's name. Despite its few warts, Pure Moods II is a good listen overall. --Terry Wood

I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.

Stunning and extraordinary compilation, a must have!.......2006-09-11

What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.

Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.

"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.

Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.

Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.

The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.

This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.

If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.

I bought this based on the cover, I was at a flea market and loved the purple and intersting artwork. Now I have lost the cover but know where the cd is at all times, only 4 songs are songs I could live without (11-14) the rest are wonderful, amazing and truly a joy to listen to. I will be checking out the samples of the other pure moods, to see which one I will make my own, next. A great way to relax after a stress filled day, or start the day listening on the drive to work.

I liked tracks 6 & 12. The original long version of Batawanees Beek makes the hair on my arms stand up! This one leaves me cold. I think most of this techno stuff is just too busy for me. Frantic, repetitive, and feels like an aerobic class. You can't interpret the rhythm/melody with that d!mn#d overpowering beat! What happened to the emotion? Isn't that the whole point behind art?

i disagree with the reviewers who have branded this compilation as unoriginal and not memorable. they have perhaps not listened to the first five songs on CD1, which in my opinion make the purchase of this album well worth it on their own. and there are some other good tracks sprinkled here and there throughout both discs; in fact i would argue disc one is very strong throughout.

disc two is perhaps found wanting in comparison to buddha bar IV, but it's hard to blame David Visan for running out of some ideas after putting out 2 disc sets in successive years. but let me get back to the first five tracks on the first disc.

starting with David Visan's own Nie Kantshaietsa, the listener is transported into what i picture as a natural reserve, hearing a woman telling a story about.. something :) enter a flamenco guitar, a piano softly in the background, and the voice of the woman talking about something that i can only describe as fascinatingly unintelligeble :P
it is really all quite captivating, cheesy as it may sound. this really is one of the best opening tracks on any buddha bar in my opinion, and fans of the series will know there have been many many a great one.

the second track by Mikis Theodorakis is sort of grandiose, shorter track, that reminds me a bit of his fellow countryman, Vangelis. it too has oriental flavor however and makes a great lead in to the best song i have ever heard on any buddha bar cd (!!!!!) and that is no small honor..

entitled 'Road,' track 3 is a collaboration among a few different artists, and the result is just stunning. the singer's voice is quiet, enchanting, seductive, and the music is there to match it; deep, resonant bass, catchy beat, unobtrusive background synths and sitar, and occasional, well placed trumpet. she sings both in english and some foreign, presumably eastern tongue that sounds delicious to my ears. not since Oliver Shanti's 'sacral nirvana' has a buddha bar track gripped me as this one has.. it is magnificent.

track 4 by trumpet thing does not quite hold the same standard as 'road,' but it is a worthy follow up. slightly over-cheesy on the vocals, the production is nevertheless good, and the bassline is well appreciable on a good sound system.

this review is getting long so i will wrap it up with a few additional comments about the rest of the album. this does not live up to the overall high standards of volumes I and III, but considering how soon it followed the release of IV, much worse could have been expected. and in 'road' it contains on of the all time greats of buddha bar. CD2 is not all bad either. the emma shapplin track is quite nice, as well as the Despina Vandi track, and David's reconstruction of Liszt in 'Czardas' is quite pleasing.

4 stars for moments of brilliance and a job well enough done despite precious little time to do it.

The Buddha Bar sound can be defined as the sound of Asia, put through a Chill Filter, and tuned for Zen relaxation. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:

And these album probably take a deeper step into Asia, possibly because they originate from there.

serene ambient guitar to help aid a stressful mind.......2004-10-27

Lately I've been submerging myself in yoga, morning meditation, T'ai Chi, and massage therapy to help my mind, body and spirit cope with the loss of a loved one. My sister (who raves about this artist) gave me this cd on my birthday in hopes that it would aid through the grieving process and help me relax.

Soon after my birthday, I finally had an afternoon to do nothing but try and unwind. I took my portable cd player outside with this cd and lied in my hammock. A few minutes after hitting play, I closed my eyes and had the most intense visualizations. It was as if each note from this music embraced my soul and projected a movie of warmth and comfort in my eyelids.

A few hours went by as I lay in my hammock listening to this cd repeat over and over. The calming effects of this music, combined with the hammock, had relaxed me beyond words. It was as if the stress detached my world (no pun intended).

As I look through the liner notes, I notice that this entire cd was created with guitars. Never in my life have I heard guitar sound so angelic and peaceful. All of this cd is great, yet the piece of music that comforts my heart the most is Pulse. Pulse has a calm heartbeat sound with this airy guitar melody that dances gently through the notes. Absoulutly beautiful!

I am bringing this cd to my next massage appointment in hopes that my therapist too will feel the heavenly ambiance that this music provides.

Just got volume 2. Delicious! What an encore. Nicely divergent from Volume 1. It seems to be more 'grounded' than the prior work but still retaining the flavors of space. You can tell this artist respects the delicate atmosphere needed for massage. This cd is successful with a client who is beyond picky with his musical choices during our sessions. Muchas gracias!

the most creative musical journey.......2003-12-15

Having had so many incredible experiences listening and working with Detaching The World Vol. 1, I purchased Vol. 2 without hesitation. Although different from the first CD, the musicians style of meditative guitar transforms me and resonates with me similiar to Vol. 1. It seems as if the music puts me in a trance sending me to another place - a place where everything is calm and nothing can go wrong. My thoughts disappear and I capture the importance of being in every moment. This CD is mellow enough for deep relaxation yet also great music to play in the car on a long roadtrip. Either way it is definitely a journey that everyone should experience. I also find it important to listen from beginning to end without stopping - each track almost leads you to the next. It's as if a story is formed in track 1 that sends you wanting to know more in track 2. This continues until the "grand finale" which is a "heartbeat"-like song - sending you immediataly inward on your own journey. This is a beautiful CD.
