Climbing on the burly shoulders of the No Limit record label, New Orleans's Cash Money Records leads the Dirty South's second assault on the ears of the rest of the country. But it wasn't until Juvenile's conversational "Ha," a furiously paced monologue dwelling on the details of everyday life, broke that the label was able to establish itself with a single that would snap northern necks. 400 Degreez, the album from which "Ha" is drawn, marks a high point in the South's musical output. Producer Manny Fresh--who's responsible for all the Cash Money production--rarely strays far from the region's bass roots, blending it with strings, keys, and other layers to make it more palatable to the masses. And it's Juvenile, with his hurried slurs, who dances the shimmy best, from the anthemic "Run for It" to the New York-ready braggadocio of "Juvenile on Fire," on which Fresh shakes it up like maracas on Cinco de Mayo. --Jon Caramanica

3 out of 5 stars anthem king indeed!.......2006-06-14

Read the below review Street-Hop-1977 wrote titled "Street Anthem King."

That pretty much sums up all there is to say about Juvenile and 400 Degreez.

Yeah, Juvey's good for a few hit party singles from time to time. Yes, he a Southern rap legend and yes, 400 Degreez is considered his classic.

Juve got skills, but Wayne is better now!

3 out of 5 stars Street Anthem King.......2006-06-14

I'm not hatin' on Juvey ... he do got skillz (well, more than most at what used 2 be his Cash $$$ Millionaires Camp -- well, okay, Wayne on top now).

I'm a hardcore hip hop fan but I do listen to different kinds and from different regions. I'm a casual Juvenile fan at best, so please take that into consideration with this review.

Juvey was introduced to mainstream with anthemic hits like "Ha", "Back Dat A## Up" and "Follow Me Now" from this album 400 Degreez.

And what have we heard from Juvenile since this 1998 LP?

More anthemic jams like "U Understand", "I Got Dat Fire," "Mama Got A##," "(Move In) Slow Motion", and "Rodeo."

If you 13, you'll probably think there's no better album out than this one.

If you just into hip hop for party jams, you'll probably enjoy this album as well.

But if you're 25 or just a little more mature, this album will sound dated and loose some steam after 10+ replays.

Juvenile will rightfully go down as one of the legends of Southern rap music, but me personally, I just have to be in the mood to hear Juvenile -- otherwise I'm rockin' some other sh%t.

But, overall, if you can listen to some rap music without taking lyrics too seriously other than just having a good time, this album is recommended.

Also, considering so many of his subsequent albums have been hit or miss, 400 Degreez is THE Juvenile LP 2 cop.

5 out of 5 stars Snuggly Naptime Fun.......2006-05-01

I really can't add any more than what has already been written about the classic 400 Degreez. My children love it dearly, along with several other Juvenile albums and videos. So let me just add this information I learned about Juvenile's music. By the way, his excellent earlier albums and first video should have received more awards but had not reached full popularity yet like his later albums:

5 out of 5 stars Best Juvenile Cd........................2006-02-22

Folks from places other than New Orleans have said that Juvenile raps like he's deaf. Maybe it's the lazy-tongued drawl. Maybe it's how he randomly adds and subtracts syllables. Maybe it's because some of his favorite words have no written equivalent, or precise meaning - words like whoalay or shipe. But it's no speech impediment. It's New Orleans Third Ward Ghetto - a second language. Juvenile's not deaf. He's bilingual.

Folks outside of New Orleans have also said that Juvenile can't rap. Truth be told, he can't. Not in a Rakim, KRS-One sort of way. But to those who live in and around the Magnolia Housing Project of Uptown New Orleans, not only can Juvenile rap, Juvenile and his fellow Hot Boyz - B.G., Lil' Wayne and Turk - are rap.

New Orleanians have an odd habit of adding affirmative or declarative words at the end of sentences. "I can't go tonight, no." "The test was hard, yeah." Or as Juvenile begins "Ha": "That's you with that bad-a** Benz, huh?" (It's written "Ha." He means "Huh?" As in: "Right? Don't you agree? Isn't it so?") "Ha" is the first single - an updated, remodeled and better version of Juvenile's regional hit, "Solja Rag."

Some of "Ha" is funny - "That's you that can't keep a ol' lady 'cause you keep f*****' her friends, huh?"

Some of "Ha" is cruel - "That h** don't know when to shut her mouth up, huh?/You gon' knock that h*** teeth out, huh?"

Some of "Ha" is criminal - "You know how to work a triple beam, huh?/It ain't hard as it seems, huh?"

Some of "Ha" is just life - "Some of your partners [are] dope fiends, huh?/You don't really wanna f*** wit' them n***** huh?/You come up wit' them n*****, huh?/You stuck wit' them n*****, huh?"

"Ha" may be either a subtly nuanced work of genius or a beautiful accident. Or both.

If you're looking for complex rhyme schemes, complicated flows or advanced subject matter, keep looking. Juvenile raps are strictly rhyme/rhyme, switch. Rhyme/rhyme, switch. His idea of a complex rhyme is status and at/us. (Get it? Both syllables.) His topics are basic and you've heard it all before - wine, women, weapons. The usual. Repeatedly.

Despite these limitations, what keeps 400 Degreez interesting is style. Juvenile chants/sings/raps his lyrics in a deceptively simple way that makes you think maybe you could be a rapper. But you'd best believe that it takes talent. If it didn't, this writer would be a Hot Boy too instead of just writing about them.

In varying combinations, the other three Hot Boyz appear on almost half of the album's 13 songs. They too, sound like average rappers. You'll keep hitting your repeat button though. B.G. has an ominous, dark drawl that makes everything he says sound dangerous even when it's not. Lil' Wayne has the nasal whine of a kid and a funny tendency to say words in pairs - his diamonds don't gleam, they "gleam-gleam." He's not riding on twenties; he's on "twenny-twen-twens." Nothing he says sounds particularly dangerous even when it is. ("All my enemies/See me comin'/All my enemies/Pew! - Be runnin'." From the gunfire, he means. Yeah, right. You'll be laughing. Wayne's laughing too - "I crack myself up," he says.) Turk is the most conventional rapper of the four and he's not half-bad either.

Cash Money has only one producer, Manny Fresh. True to his name, Manny's tracks are fresh - unsampled and uninterpolated that is. They don't call these guys Cash Money for nothing. Forget clearing samples, these guys are collecting 100% of their publishing. Manny's tracks won't change the course of rap production, but they won't bore you either. He likes to place snare drum rolls in unexpected places and he punctuates every song with keyboard stabs that all sound the same except that they're not.

Juvenile and the Cash Money Millionaires are about one thing - entertainment. They're not trying to stimulate, provoke or educate. They're not trying to uplift the race or free the mind. They're just trying to entertain you enough that you'll buy their next record and tell all your friends to buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Vivaldi: Cello Concerti, Vol. 2.......2006-08-23

Excellent performance and high quality recording. Arrived in great shape and in a very short time. I'm quite pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner in the Vivaldi cello series.......2005-12-12

This is volume 1 of a 4-volume set on the Naxos label comprising all of Vivaldi's 27 cello concertos. I have only heard volumes 1 and 2, so cannot fairly evaluate 3 and 4 yet, but I can tell you that the first two volumes are terrific performances of this wonderful music. Vivaldi was very inventive in writing these, so they never seem repetitive, and the good blend of tempos keeps them from seeming either too hurried or too sedate. Raphael Wallfisch on solo cello performs with enthusiasm and precision, yet always tastefully in accord with how the music was written. The recording quality is very good too, warm and well-balanced. If you trust the writers of the Penguin Guide as I do to rate classical recordings, they sum up their attitude to all 4 volumes of these recordings with the statement: "a remarkable achievement, standing very high in the Vivaldi discography," and give their very highest "Rosette" rating to volume 3.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful performances of gorgeous pieces........1999-02-16

All four volumes of these twenty-seven Vivaldi cello concerti are masterfully and sensitively performed. The style of Vivaldi pours through the flawless playing of both the orchestra and soloists. The tempi chosen for each movement seem to bring out the most in the music--never too slow and never too fast. Although all four volumes are beautiful, the second volume contains prime examples of Vivaldi's style--that relentlessly tense and elegant rush. The Double Cello Concerto in G minor, RV 531, recalls the urgency of Vivaldi's first movement in his "Winter" concerto, except here, two cellos perfectly contending with the orchestra give this piece more material and substance to listen to. The slow movement that follows is gorgeous, giving way to the relatively joyful ending. On the same volume, the Concerto in C minor, RV 401, also gives a beautiful glimpse at Vivaldi's unmistakable style. The works in the other three volumes do not really match the intensity and delicacy of the pieces in the second volume--especially the double cello concerto; however, all four volumes, each at such a humble price, are golden additions to the collection of those who love Vivaldi's music.

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive Scarlatti.......2007-05-26

I've been a Scarlatti fan since I discovered the Ralph Kirkpatrick recordings on Columbia when I was in high school--some 40 years ago. Over the years I have played some of them on the piano and collected numerous recordings, performed on both harpsichord and piano. I first purchased Scott Ross's complete collection after sampling the 3-CD Scarlatti Anthologie and being pleased with what I heard. After listening to about a third of the 34 CDs on which the 555 sonatas are recorded I can say that Scott Ross's performances equal or exceed anything I've heard from any other performer on harpsichord. There are recordings by other performers I rate very highly--Wanda Landowska's characterful pre-WW II recordings and Andras Schiff's superb piano recordings of the sonatas come to mind--but Scott Ross has it all. Meticulous accuracy, a truly engaging sense of rhythm--so critical in bringing out the character of the sonatas, a superb sense of the Spanish idiom Scarlatti uses, elegant ornamentaion, a masterful selection of stops, and the wonderful recorded harpsichord sound all make this set a thoroughly satisfying musical experience for the Scarlatti lover. Bringing all of this quality to the formidable task of recording all of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas is a tremendous achievement and a true service to the music loving public. In addition to the pleasure of having such a treasure trove of great Scarlatti performances, the complete collection has afforded me the oppotunity to discover many elegant gems among Scarlatt's lesser known sonatas--the kind that stay in my head days after hearing them. That Ross died at the relatively early age of 38 was a real loss. If you're a Scarlatti fan, treat yourself to this complete collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2005-10-20

This recent re-release of Scott Ross's complete recordings of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is truly a great a accomplishment. The 34 CDs contain all 555 sonatas. The vast majority are played by Ross on the harpsichord, or harpsichord's I should say. Four different harpsichords were used, one Italian and three French. While various groups of Sonatas might sound a bit different it doesn't take away from the experience at all.

And what an experience it is. Ross's harpsichord playing is bright and lively when required, relaxed and subdued at other times. While it's hard to imagine that Ross was able to become intimately familiar with 555 sonatas over the year it took to record them, his performances do not show any signs of boredom. The sonatas are overall focused and well performed.

In addition to the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas, there are also recordings of Scarlatti's five sonatas with string and woodwing accompaniment as well as his three organ sonatas. All keyboard parts are played by Ross.

The packaging of this set is very compact. Each CD is in a thick paper cover, the whole of the set in a single box. There is also a 255 page booklet that contains a short description of nearly every sonata. Additionally there is an interview with Ross from 1986.

This is a wonderful set for any fan of Scarlatti and Ross. And at the price, it would even be worth it for anyone who enjoys Baroque harpsichord music but isn't familiar with Scarlatti. I highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic moody trance song!.......2005-10-30

This is a great trance song, its still played quite often 5 years after its released. It spent 2 weeks at #2 in the UK charts only stopped by the cheesy Mariah Carey & Westlife duet - ROBBED! Anyway get this, its an anthem for all clubbers!
