This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006
The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.
Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24
There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.
Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.
All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.
Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18

Celebrate Love And Life!.......2005-02-06
The album has gone on to sell almost three million copies in America and more than 600,000 in the UK. These sales will add to Crow's already impressive world sales of 15 million considerably and will see her continue long into the future. The Very Best Of also featured a few new tracks. The lead single was "The First Cut Is The Deepest," a cover version of the Cat Stevens original. I didn't like this song very much, but there was another new song on the album called "Light In Your Eyes" which I bloody love! The song is funky, upbeat and very happy. It reminds me of the singles from Sheryl's second album, because the guitars just sweep along.
The song opens with drums and guitars aplenty. Sheryl starts singing the first verse, "Something is happening, everything's different but everything is fine, yeah! This is the good stuff. Yesterday's only what you leave behind. It's only in your mind." This rather brief and simple first verse is followed by the catchy chorus, where Sheryl sings, "You gotta talk to the one who made you, talk to the one who understands. Talk to the one who gave you all that light in your eyes. All that light in your eyes." The second verse then starts and Sheryl sings, "There's no use pretending. You never existed until you saw the light, yeah! Well you're just beginning. You haven't missed it, it's all ahead of you. And you know what to do."
The drums then float a little bit before the second chorus begins and you really hear, for a brief second, the catchiness of this song. Sheryl then sings the second chorus before a beautiful bridge where she sings, "Here comes the world and she is beautifully mysterious. She's got it all and you say 'Give it to me!'" A short instrumental then plays before the song dies down and Sheryl sings, "Nobody's happy. That's not the world I knew inside. Where everybody hides." Sheryl then sings the chorus again a few times before finishing the song off with "Yeah, thank you, thank you! Yeah, everything great and small! Yeah, thank you, thank you, for the light in your eyes. Yeah, thank you, thank you. Yeah, everything great and small. Yeah, thank you, thank you, for the light in your eyes. For the light in your eyes."
The song then ends and always leaves me feeling happy about life. Does Sheryl have some sort of religious significance hidden in the lyrics? Who can say - all I know is that it's a celebration of life, and we should embrace it. I haven't seen a video for this song and I'm not sure if one was made, but if one wasn't, one should have been because this song is great. Sheryl's vocals are softer and more rounded on this song than they are on some of her other songs where her voice is grittier and more raw. Overall a fantastic song which I'm sure I'll be listening to for years to come.

I can't go as far as to say this CD is flawless (pardon the usage of words), but Flaw's first album is definitely one you might keep playing for a while. I know I can't just say go buy this album and you're going to love it. Not everyone likes all types of music. However, for a band to establish a unique sound right off the bat is something awesome. Personally, really hard rock is not my favorite, but this album has something different. If you enjoy listening to Mudvayne, Seether, Disturbed, it's along those lines. It's a change of pace to listen to the deep lyrics in the music. This isn't poppy, happy go lucky music that makes you just want to give the nearest person a big hug. This music has true feelings in it, and I can honestly say that. You almost feel the emotion in every song. The song "Whole" is written about the suicide of the lead singer's mother when he was a child and lyrics about it also turn up in the song "Best I Am".
Flaw played on the Ozzfest Tour 2002. They mainly played all of the harder, more pumped up songs. But you can't stereotype Flaw as the same old metal, they play all types of music and a lot of the softer stuff is what I think sets them apart. This band has so much talent for a newcomer it's scary. The harmonious slower stuff can still hit hard parts so if you think that its truly not rock, you're wrong. Not only are the songs good, but the lyrics tell about the realities in life and what really happens. Unlike some other albums, where every song sounds the same, Through The Eyes has so many different sounds to it. The bassist has tremendous talent and the rhythm of guitars and drums absolutely stuns me. All in all, this is a great CD and a must buy in my opinion. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
