4 out of 5 stars sorry for its expensiveness.......2003-12-17

In Japan, CD is very expensive. So when I go on a shopping for CD, I always get the import one. This misic is nice, and also the jacket is, but too expensive because of IMPORT from Japan. I'm sorry for it. I hope this album release in ths US. But this
record company is now under the japanese Sony Music Co., so my hope would not realise.

5 out of 5 stars THE FIRST JAZZ ALBUM I EVER HEARD.......2001-10-30

I heard this album in 1965, when I was 16. Not a bad introduction to Jazz. The best piano player, alto sax player, and drummer of all time. I got hooked immediately. You know I was listeneing to the pop music of the day. I put this on and heard Joe Morello with that outstanding cymbal playing on "Let's Get Away From It All", and I was astonished. I'm still astonished from Joe Morello. This is the best quartet of all time. Three players who are leaders and the bass. I only like Dave Brubeck with this quartet, and the drummer is what is driving him. Anyway, Dave Brubeck doesn't need me to criticize him, so let's move on. I wil tell you that the playing of "Angel Eyes", is absolutely the best reading of this song available. Period. You will feel like you are in a smokey cafe. It's so bluesy; don't tell me Dave Brubeck can't play the blues. It's unbelievable. I would buy the disc for this song alone. "Violets For Your Furs", is also a favorite. Great playing on these songs. The only thing I don't like about this album is the playing gets tedious on the other cuts, but that's my opinion. You may love the playing. The songs themselves are the things that are not enjoyable. In general, it's a great album and it's my first. I looked all over for this disc. I don't care what it costs. I would pay anything to have this. I'm so glad it's available. Also, the playing is extremely user friendly for the new person first listening to Jazz. I treasure this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Brubeck Plays Matt Denise.......2000-09-18

That should really be the name of the album. Since of course every song on here was written by Denise. I guess Brubeck wanted to make another "composer" album after he made "Anything Goes" which was his Cole Porter album. And by the way, that also is a great album! Wonderful teamimg as always by Brubeck and Desmond. My favorite track on the album is "Will You Still Be Mine" which is also my favorite Matt Denise song. "Mine" opens up fast and swinging, with Bruneck introducing the song with a strong 4\4 beat. Soon afterwards Desmond enters and plays his sax in a way ONLY he could. The title track is played quite well with again Burubeck playing the theme. It's at a slower pace then I'm use to hearing it, but none the less, a great version. "Lets Get Away From It All" showcases how well Desmond could swing. After a swinging solo by Desmond, Brubeck comes in with an equally swinging solo of his very own. This is one of the best albums made by the quartet. A must for all Brubeck fans! After hearing this one, try to find "Anything Goes", "Plays Music From West Side Story", and "Time Out". A classic.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Eyes-Dave Brubeck Quartet.......2000-02-14

Have tried to find this in CD format for years. Is as enjoyable listening as any Brubeck album I have ever heard. All of the 7 tracks are outstanding. Recordings ar excellent quality. Great solos from Brubeck and Desmond.

2 out of 5 stars This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12

Type the following into the search on Amazon to find the best English version of The Merry Widow: Léhar: The Land of Smiles; The Merry Widow; The Count of Luxembourg (Highlights)

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006

The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

4 out of 5 stars Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24

THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.

There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.

Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.

All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.

4 out of 5 stars Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18

Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate Love And Life!.......2005-02-06

The release of Sheryl Crow's "The Very Best Of" in October 2003 showcased a true talent in rock music which had reigned for 10 years. From 1993 to 2003, the album was a collection of Crow's best material from four studio albums. The early material from "Tuesday Night Music Club" was evident, where songs such as "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Strong Enough" brought about a striking combination of rock pop and hints of folk and country. The advanced rock pop of her self-titled second album with hits such as "Everyday Is A Winding Road" and "If It Makes You Happy" formed the backbone of the collection, with "My Favorite Mistake" and "Soak Up The Sun" the more recent hits adding to the already sizeable chunk of Crow's body of work.

The album has gone on to sell almost three million copies in America and more than 600,000 in the UK. These sales will add to Crow's already impressive world sales of 15 million considerably and will see her continue long into the future. The Very Best Of also featured a few new tracks. The lead single was "The First Cut Is The Deepest," a cover version of the Cat Stevens original. I didn't like this song very much, but there was another new song on the album called "Light In Your Eyes" which I bloody love! The song is funky, upbeat and very happy. It reminds me of the singles from Sheryl's second album, because the guitars just sweep along.

The song opens with drums and guitars aplenty. Sheryl starts singing the first verse, "Something is happening, everything's different but everything is fine, yeah! This is the good stuff. Yesterday's only what you leave behind. It's only in your mind." This rather brief and simple first verse is followed by the catchy chorus, where Sheryl sings, "You gotta talk to the one who made you, talk to the one who understands. Talk to the one who gave you all that light in your eyes. All that light in your eyes." The second verse then starts and Sheryl sings, "There's no use pretending. You never existed until you saw the light, yeah! Well you're just beginning. You haven't missed it, it's all ahead of you. And you know what to do."

The drums then float a little bit before the second chorus begins and you really hear, for a brief second, the catchiness of this song. Sheryl then sings the second chorus before a beautiful bridge where she sings, "Here comes the world and she is beautifully mysterious. She's got it all and you say 'Give it to me!'" A short instrumental then plays before the song dies down and Sheryl sings, "Nobody's happy. That's not the world I knew inside. Where everybody hides." Sheryl then sings the chorus again a few times before finishing the song off with "Yeah, thank you, thank you! Yeah, everything great and small! Yeah, thank you, thank you, for the light in your eyes. Yeah, thank you, thank you. Yeah, everything great and small. Yeah, thank you, thank you, for the light in your eyes. For the light in your eyes."

The song then ends and always leaves me feeling happy about life. Does Sheryl have some sort of religious significance hidden in the lyrics? Who can say - all I know is that it's a celebration of life, and we should embrace it. I haven't seen a video for this song and I'm not sure if one was made, but if one wasn't, one should have been because this song is great. Sheryl's vocals are softer and more rounded on this song than they are on some of her other songs where her voice is grittier and more raw. Overall a fantastic song which I'm sure I'll be listening to for years to come.

Rob Rock once again hits us with an astounding metal album. All the tracks are beautifully written and arranged with blistering performances being the standard across the board. The one song that will make most people do a double take is the albums closer 'The Hour of Dawn' with its four and a half minute guitar solo including such respected players as Jack Frost and the production mastermind of metal Roy Z. In short if you like Halford, Dickinson, Dio and the like you owe it to yourself to go and check out Rob Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album Gets Better.......2007-05-13

This album is a classic in my opinion, harsh but honest and diverse. If you've only heard a song or two from this album on the radio you really need to see what you've been missing. If you already own the album without these 2 bonus tracks it's still worth the purchase. Their follow up album Endangered Species was pretty good, but they did not top this debut masterpiece in my mind. Singer Chris Volz has stayed strong with side project Five.Bolt.Main, but FLAW is back together working on their 3rd album and fans are hoping it will be a true follow up to this.

            5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-12-31

            5 out of 5 stars i have a question.......2005-01-01

i love Flaw and own both album, but i have question about this edition of TTE. On the normal version there is a hidden song on the last track, a piano ballad of only the strong, my question is: is the piano ballad put at the end of no time or is it still at the end of One More Time or is it just totally removed? thanks to anyone who answers

            5 out of 5 stars I love this band.......2004-04-18

this is by far the best Cd i have ever bought, i don't believe there is one song on the album that i dislike. the vocals are simply amazing (along with the music) oh man. i love this cd and this band and i can't wait for their new cd to come out. i'm tempted to buy this imported cd because the one i have doesn't have the bonus songs, and "recognize," which is one of the bonus songs, is awesome. I'm excited to see Flaw on April 27th at the El Rey theatre.... ahhh <3

            Flaw - Through The Eyes

I can't go as far as to say this CD is flawless (pardon the usage of words), but Flaw's first album is definitely one you might keep playing for a while. I know I can't just say go buy this album and you're going to love it. Not everyone likes all types of music. However, for a band to establish a unique sound right off the bat is something awesome. Personally, really hard rock is not my favorite, but this album has something different. If you enjoy listening to Mudvayne, Seether, Disturbed, it's along those lines. It's a change of pace to listen to the deep lyrics in the music. This isn't poppy, happy go lucky music that makes you just want to give the nearest person a big hug. This music has true feelings in it, and I can honestly say that. You almost feel the emotion in every song. The song "Whole" is written about the suicide of the lead singer's mother when he was a child and lyrics about it also turn up in the song "Best I Am".

Flaw played on the Ozzfest Tour 2002. They mainly played all of the harder, more pumped up songs. But you can't stereotype Flaw as the same old metal, they play all types of music and a lot of the softer stuff is what I think sets them apart. This band has so much talent for a newcomer it's scary. The harmonious slower stuff can still hit hard parts so if you think that its truly not rock, you're wrong. Not only are the songs good, but the lyrics tell about the realities in life and what really happens. Unlike some other albums, where every song sounds the same, Through The Eyes has so many different sounds to it. The bassist has tremendous talent and the rhythm of guitars and drums absolutely stuns me. All in all, this is a great CD and a must buy in my opinion. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
