Album Description
The new Decca CD, Mendelssohn Discoveries, contains piano works by Felix Mendelssohn previously unrecorded. Most of these piano works were composed by Mendelssohn during blissful moments in his life - his honeymoon, during times of great financial security; for his sister Fanny's pregnancy and impending birth. No wonder that most newlyweds march down the aisle to Mendelssohn's 'Wedding March' from A Midsummer's Night Dream. One only has to take a deeper look at the composer to understand there was tension and suffering in his work as well. Roberto Prosseda, the Italian pianist featured on Mendelssohn Discoveries, sensed Mendelssohn's darker side. ''I think he suffered a lot behind this apparently quiet life,'' says Prosseda in a recent Wall Street Journal article. ''But he never wanted to show off suffering the way Chopin and Beethoven did, he always tried to keep a certain composure. So when the suffering comes out, it comes out even more dramatically.'' An example of this is the newly-discovered Fantasia in C Minor. Composed at the mere age of 13, Mendelssohn seems to express the intensity and complexity of a much older composer. Decca. 2005.Album Details
Prosseda is a Musicologist as Well as a Renowned Pianist. For his Decca Records Debut, He Presents a Program of Previously Unrecorded Piano Pieces by Felix Mendelsohn Bartholdy. He Premiered These Pieces at a Concert in Milan in December 2004. Many of These Pieces Are Quiet Compositions, but Prosseda Contends that the Music Reveals a More Tortured Soul Lurking Between the Measures. Prosseda's Playing Concentrates on the True Nature and Intricasies of the Music that Reveals Further Depths of Mendelssohn's Personality that is Not Immediately Evident in his Other Better Known Works. Collectively, These Pieces Offer a Fascinating Perspective of the Man that While Shunned in Generations Following his Death Has Been Rediscovered and Studied Intently after the Fall of the Berlin Wall as a Bridge the Classic-romantic Divide, Evoking Visual Stimuli with his Music Previously Unnoticed.Customer Reviews:
Much Too Long Awaited but All the More Welcome Recorded Piano Solo Works of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.......2007-07-15
The works, for the most part, are not quite top-drawer Mendelssohn, but this composer's standard was high, indeed, so musch so that all of his music is worth hearing, these pieces or any others. The only work that was disappointing in its inconsistency is the lengthy Fantasia in the keys of C minor and D major of 1823, but, after all, Mendelssohn was only fourteen years old when he composed this tripartite piece! The piano writing in the lyric portions sounds more like weak Chopin (whose music of this sort, very little of which was at all tepid, dates, of course, from somewhat later years) than it sounds like Mendelssohn at his more typical and best; there is what sounds like an heavy influence, in these plaintively melodious sections, from "bel canto" Italian opera, but, unlike Chopin a bit later integrating Vincenzo Bellini's kind of elegiac lyricism in his own Polish-French style, the texture and pianistic elaboration of Mendelssohn's handling of such Italianate thematic material is too plain to convey the effect that equally fine melodic writing would have had at Chopin's hand later, but when the young Mendelssohn romps and gambols in parts of the Fantasy at faster tempi, the results are utterlyly delightful. The other works included on this disc of rarities are briefer and more surely "Mendelssohnian" in style and treatment, therefore endearingly beautiful. The shorter the pieces, it seems, the more times it pays re-hearing such perfect gems.
Roberto Prosseda obviously put a lot of work into this disc and his playing does justice to the music, with all the technic and limpidly appealing tone for which one could wish. However, at times Prosseda does seem to hold back, to rein in the music at times when a more freewheelingly and grandly vivid range of expression better would realise the sheer potential to excite the listener. One yearns to hear the equally sensitive but, at "big" moments, more "no holds barred" approach of a young lion of the keyboard like Yevgeny Sudbin launching into this music's more grandiose moments without such unwanted restraint as Prosseda's. However, this is a minor quibble and only applies to this music intermittently. Prosseda is a fine artist, and one is grateful that a pianist of his calibre and devotion to the cause of Mendelssohn's music turned to this unjustly neglected music to undertake his project of recording it.
Crystal clear recording and utterly sensitive and steady playing.......2007-02-20
Then there is the playing. Roberto Prosseda offers us an unassuming and deceptively simple virtuosity in his rendering of these rarely played (and never before recorded) works of Mendelssohn, shaping them all into the gems that they really are. His rhythm and tempo changes are solid and spot on, never rushing, never losing momentum, and his touch is always full of perfectly balanced voicings and subtle colorations that simply cannot be described. Perhaps it is fortunate that he plays three selections from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," as one can appreciate how his piano coloration perfectly reminds one of the original orchestration.
I don't know if this recording was ever nominated for a Grammy, but in today's world of neglected quality, I would not be surprised if it were not. And if not, it should have been, as the playing of Mr. Prosseda is as much of a discovery as the Mendelssohn gems themselves.

Flawless expression !.......2006-05-01
We definitively have not had the chance to listen Rudolf Serkin playing Bach with major frequency we desired, and this is a very good option. These Goldberg are musically expressive. They possess the verticality and minutely precision in which the phrasing concerns; lyricism and expression. And, in spite of the fact there are true milestone performances in the whole musical firmament, we are talking about of one of the supreme pianists of the last Century.
Go for this album. The sound quality is fabulous.
BACK TO BACH.......2004-03-14
In the Italian Concerto and Chromatic Fantasia I already owned performances by Gould and by Malcolm, the latter also giving us the fugue that normally accompanies the Fantasia. Making allowance for the obvious difference in the genius of a harpsichord from that of a concert grand, there is not a world of variety in the three artists' approaches. Malcolm takes the opening flourishes in the Fantasia faster than even two such piano-players would dare do on a resonant 8-foot grand, and he is rather more grandiose in the fugue than Serkin is. Serkin is a bit faster than the others in the first movement of the Italian Concerto, and in the last movement his speed is somewhere between Malcolm's fairly steady tempo and Gould's headlong and very exciting onrush. The slow movement, marked `andante', is my idea of adagio from all three of them. I am not scholar enough to offer an opinion on this - there is no mistaking what `andante' means in Handel, viz a definitely fastish tempo, but in Bach I'm not so sure and can only suppose that three such interpreters know what they're doing. The performance of the Capriccio on the Departure is from Puerto Rico in 1957, and intriguingly you can hear another performance by Serkin in Lugano in the same year, which comes as part of a hair-raisingly wonderful recital. That recital is incandescent, but it is not Serkin at his smoothest. This Puerto Rico performance has a crystalline aristocratic perfection, the touch in the Lugano reading is less even and there is a fluffed note somewhere, but the opening section of the Capriccio could bring tears to your eyes in a way he doesn't do this time. In the 5th Brandenburg the `marker' performance for me down the years has been from Menuhin and a Bath Festival group, with Malcolm taking the harpsichord solo. Serkin scales down his mighty touch to perfection, and if anyone equals or even surpasses Malcolm in the first movement cadenza it is Serkin. It appears to be taken in a single breath, but listen carefully - the rhythm seems so wonderfully straight precisely because it is not mechanically straight.
In the third millennium a record where the sound-quality is not top-class has to struggle for a fifth star, but I can't withold it from this record. It is not bad by any means, just not what we have come to expect nowadays. I recalled the account of how Serkin got his first opportunity, playing Bach to the Busch family. Adolf Busch exclaimed excitedly to the others `The way the boy plays you can see the whole score in front of you'. Just so. There is one slightly sad little extra here, the aria from the Goldberg variations, all that survives of a work Serkin was associated with all his life and that he was still practising on the counterpane of his deathbed. It is played at a dead-slow tempo as it ought to be, and I experienced a great wish to hear it again at the end of the record, rounding it off as Bach used it to round off his variations. I am in no doubt at all that Serkin would have disapproved of any such sentimental proceeding, but the advantage of cd technology is that I can do this if I want and nobody has to know.

Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28
Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.
That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)
The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.
Highly recommended.
