Splendid Brahms Symphony Cycle from Haitink, London Symphony Orchestra.......2006-05-12
The London Symphony Orchestra's LSO Live label finally offers as a box set acclaimed conductor Bernard Haitink's latest - and third - Brahms symphony cycle (The other two - which are still available - were recorded by Philips with Haitink conducting the Royal Concertgebouw and Boston Symphony orchestras in the 1970s and early 1990s.). Those interested in a fine Brahms symphony cycle by one of our greatest conductors will not be disappointed with this box set, which compiles the individual LSO Live CDs released over the past few years (These were recorded at live concert performances of Haitink conducting the London Symphony Orchestra primarily back in 2003 and 2004.).
Highlights include Haitink's spellbinding interpretations of the four Brahms symphonies and a brilliant performance by concertmaster Gordan Nikolitch and principal cellist Timothy Hugh of the Brahms Double Concerto. The London Symphony Orchestra's performances are absolutely impeccable, rivalling those from preeminent Dutch, German and Austrian orchestras.
Haitink offers a compelling interpretation of Brahms' 1st Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra in excellent form, which ranks as among the best performed and recorded I have heard. His latest interpretation is one which seems a bit less restrained than his earlier versions, but still replete with strict adherence to Brahms' tempi. His latest interpretation is, in some respects, more exciting than his earlier Philips recordings, emphasizing the rich sonorities and complex architecture of Brahms' score.
Without question Haitink's LSO Live recording is the best live recording of the Brahms 2nd Symphony I have heard, easily eclipsing Kurt Masur's acclaimed account with the New York Philharmonic recorded nearly a decade ago by Teldec. It is also Haitink's finest recording of this work, which he has recorded previously with both the Royal Concertgebouw and Boston Symphony orchestras. Haitink does a wonderful job emphasizing the textural richness of Brahms' score, while keeping the orchestra playing well at a very brisk tempo. However, the real treasure on this recording is the excellent performance of the Double Concerto by the London Symphony's Concertmaster and Principal Cellist which opens this CD. Theirs is a vibrant, rhapsodic performance which compares quite well - indeed I think may be better - than the recent Deutsche Grammophon recording featuring violinist Gil Shaham with Claudio Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Once again the orchestra plays with much intensity and warmth, led ably by Haitink.
Bernard Haitink's LSO Live CD of the Brahms Serenade Number 2 and the 3rd Symphony, is recorded from concerts he conducted in 2002 (serenade) and 2003 (symphony). Brahms' Serenade Number 2 could be regarded as an early precursor to his symphonies, since it is a five-movement work. Haitink leads the London Symphony Orchestra in yet another excellent performance, noted for warm, rhapsodic playing from the string section. However, the best performance on this CD is that of Brahms' Third Symphony. This piece itself is a bit unusual for a 19th Century symphony, in the form of Allegro Andante Poco Allegretto Allegro. In its overall tone, the work itself is a bit "darker" than the Second Symphony, which many have regarded as Brahms' "Pastoral" symphony. Haitink excels in emphasizing the more melancholy aspects of the work, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in the best-conducted and recorded version of this symphony that I've heard so far, with the possible exception of Harnoncourt's Teldec recording with him conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Haitink's latest recording seems a bit darker than Masur's New York Philharmonic Orchestra recording from Teldec, and perhaps, Harnoncourt's as well.
Haitink has conducted the London Symphony in an unusually warm, vibrant performance of the Brahms 4th Symphony, which is replete with excellent solo performances from the french horns, woodwinds and strings. I was especially pleased with Haitink's dignified, but still brooding, interpretation of the 4th movement, which comes across as a musical interlude between darkness and light. I personally regard this recording of the Brahms 4th symphony as the best currently available, in a crowded pack that includes distinguished recordings from the likes of Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Carlos Kleiber, Kurt Masur, and Kurt Sanderling.
Fans of Haitink's critically acclaimed 1970s Brahms symphony cycle may miss the ambient warmth of the Concertgebouw's main concert hall in this Brahms symphony cycle, but I will contend that these new recordings sound more vivid than the earlier Philips recordings. LSO Live is currently releasing Haitink's second Beethoven symphony cycle from live performances he conducted last year; I am eagerly awaiting these, suspecting that they will be regarded as among the finest Beethoven symphony recordings issued in the last few years. Later this year he will be visiting New York City, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a Beethoven symphony cycle at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. Not only do I look forward to this visit, but also to Haitink's future performances at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium as Principal Conductor of the venerable Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Awesome Live Performance.......2007-04-04
Great performance by one of the best bands ever. Shows Better Days at their best!
Get this one while you can!!!.......2005-12-09
This is an absolute great live album. The sound is great and Butterfield's Better Days Band are in excellent form. I wonder why this never came out in the domestic market so it could be better availiable. This is one album that should be bought for all Butterfield fans. The vocals are first rate and it includes an introduction by Bill Graham. Too bad the whole show which included Mike Bloomfield was not released. Get this now--just a click away.
A fine live set from a very under-raeted group.......1999-09-11
This is a tight, well played live set from Paul Butterfield's last and perhaps finest band, Better Days. Better Days consisted of Butterfield on harp and vocals, Geoff Muldaur on keys, guitar, and vocals, Ronnie Barron on piano and vocals, legendary studio musician Amos Garrett on lead guitar, Bill Rich on bass and Christopher Parker on drums. Better Days was relatively short-lived, releasing only two studio albums on the Bearsville label in 1973 and 1974. This set is a very welcome addition to their body of recorded work. Better Days was one of the rare bands made up of veteran musicians who brought a wide variety of musical backgrounds and experiences into a seamless mix. Paul Butterfield was a harp player second to none; he certainly merits inclusion in the short list of harmonica greats, along with Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter Jacobs, Junior Wells and a few others. His gritty vocals brought a strong Chicago-blues component to the Better Days sound. Geoff Muldaur was a veteran of the east-coast blues school, having played with Jim Kweskin and also releasing several fine albums his then-wife, Maria Muldaur. Geoff played rhythym and slide guitar and keyboards with Better Days, in addition to sharing the vocal work with Butterfield and Ronnie Barron. Barron, a New Orleans native, played piano and sang with a deep and beautiful cajun sound. Amos Garrett was a well respected studio musician who had played with Kweskin, Geoff and Maria Muldaur, and others. His solo on Maria's hit "Midnight at the Oasis" is widely considered a masterpiece by guitarists. Garrett was probably the finest guitarist to play with Butterfield since Michael Bloomfield left the original Butterfield Band in 1967. Better Days was reminiscent of their Woodstock neighbors, The Band, in several respects. Each group had three strong lead vocalists who could easily have carried their own band. In addition, each group was comprised of veteran players who knew enough to sublimate their egos to the music---there is no showing off, there are no virtuoso turns (quite an anomoly for the early 70s!) These folks were smart enough and experienced enough to know what to leave out, as well as what to play. This live set is a nice showcase of what this fine group of musicians had to offer. Butterfield shines on the opener, "Countryside", a previously unrecorded number by this group. Geoff Muldaur has two excellent vocal turns here, "Small Town Talk" (written by Bobby Charles and Rick Danko), and Nick Graveneties' "Buried Alive in the Blues". Amos Garrett has a lower profile on this set than I'd like, but his solo on Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" is a thing of beauty. This show was recorded on February 23, 1973, at Winterland Ballroom. The lineup that night was the Elvin Bishop Group, Michael Bloomfield and Friends, and Paul Butterfield's Better Days. The Better Days set was followed by a reunion of the original Butterfield Blues Band alumni, Butterfield, Bloomfield, Bishop, and Mark Naftalin. One can only wonder if that reunion jam was recorded....I certainly hope so, and I hope Bearsville (or whoever owns the rights to the tapes) will release the reunion set. It's music with great historical as well as artistic value...how about it, Bearsville?

A representative introduction to Furtwängler's art.......2003-02-15
We are not exactly short on recordings by Wilhelm Furtwängler, and for collectors and aficionados of the great German conductor this box of 6 CDs with live recordings from 1944-1953 will undoubtedly be a severe disappointment. The only rarity is the (otherwise unnecessary) Tchaikovsky "Pathétique" from Cairo, 1951. All the rest are reissues and have been released by various labels in different couplings.
This set is therefore mainly destined for anybody wanting a well-programmed and representative introduction to the art of Furtwängler. Except for the already mentioned Tchaikovsky, the "Rapsodie espagnole" by Ravel, and the "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Hindemith, interesting but not really indispensable, the rest of the box is required listening. There are stunningly revelatory cuts of Brahms 2nd (Vienna, 1945), Beethoven's 7th (Berlin, 1953), Schubert's 8th (Berlin, 1952), Bruckner's 8th (Vienna 1944), and a formidable disc of orchestral excerpts from Wagner's operas. On top of that the Vienna 1944 recording of Beethoven's Leonore III is a real killer. The "Haydn Variations" by Brahms, "Manfred" by Schumann, "Don Juan" by Strauss, and the "Symphony" by Franck are equally rewarding.
It goes without saying that the sound quality of these live recordings from the 1940s and 1950s is variable, although within context everything is acceptable and well remastered (There is some serious distortion though in the final movement of the Franck "Symphony").
This set comes in yet a new limited-edition historical series "Original Masters" from Deutsche Grammophon. The liner notes emphasizing the rarity of the recordings (so-called "buried musical treasures") are however to be taken with more than a grain of salt. The presentation of the CDs in paper bags with a transparent cover isn't exactly a great idea either.
Indispensable for those music lovers willing to find out what Wilhelm Furtwängler is all about.

Jansons, RCO play Beethoven and Brahms.......2006-11-27
When I saw this recording in a music shop, I wondered if the listening public could possibly gain anything from another recording of two of the most famous symphonies ever composed. The answer is, it can. This is a truly top-notch rendition of Beethoven 2 and Brahms 2 in almost every respect. One of my few gripes would be that the celli, in some crucial parts of the first movement of the Brahms and opening of the second movement of that same work are simply not present enough--although, it is always a challenge to capture on disc that middle register. The clarity and precision are both wonderful, as are most of the tempi, save the Adagio of the Brahms, which feels slightly pushed at points. The Finale of each work is superb; especially in the Brahms, which moves at a ravishingly fast clip. Most pleasing, however, is the palpable excitement that is evident, maybe because these are "live" recordings, or because of the relatively new (then) maestro. Either way, bravi to all. This CD is a welcome addition to my already very full and expansive music library.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

A legendary salsa band reunites........2003-07-03
Tipica 73 was undeniably and unquestionably one of the very best salsa bands of its time. This reunion was a more-than-welcome treat with many original members being present. I personally don't find it as superb or as mind-blowing as most of their 1970s releases but this CD is still wonderful.

Iggy Pop - 'Live In L.A. '73' (Original Masters).......2004-10-12
'Live In...' is apparently the same/exact show that was recorded at LA's famed Whiskey A Go Go on Sept.16,1973 that was also released under the title 'Live At The Whiskey A Go Go' on the French import label,Revenge.Although it's always nice to hear the Stooge classic foot-stompers like "Raw Power","I Need Somebody" and "Gimme Danger",I cannot really say there's much special about this CD,except for MAYBE the cool hand-drawn cover.Just another CD title for us Iggy die-hards.
Live Ig,Dead Sound.......2000-06-27
It's impossible to tell if the band was any good the night this live recording was made...because it sounds like it was recorded on a cheap cassette deck hidden under someone's jacket in the middle of the crowd.I'm a die-hard fan but this is sonic garbage.
