Writer-director Marc Lawrence's romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry's past and present via Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the '80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible--if often gently tongue-in-cheek--performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of "Meaningless Kiss," the emotive piano confessional "Don't Write Me Off," and two versions of "Way Back into Love," the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher's unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant's ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer's Britney-esque "Buddha's Delight," "Slam," and the more obviously snarky "Entering Bootytown." Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds' bouncy "Tony the Beat" and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears' "Different Sound." Highlighted by Grant's sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it's a pop-lover's delight from start to finish. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
The Problem Is - I Want More.......2007-07-12
I was a little irked at what I felt was another attempt to show that the 80s was nothing more than a vapid, superficial decade which only produced goofy, forgettable, lightweight fluff. Yes, there was a lot of that, but there were also many serious, moving, culture-defining moments as well. If we want to assume that "My Humps" summarizes all of the music produced during the current decade, then I'll buy in that "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was what the 80s was all about.
Anyway, half of songs here are designed to sound like they came out in the mid-80s; obviously the ones Hugh Grant sings on are supposed to be like the equivalent of Wham! (not that Wham! was a synth-pop band, but whatever). And I have to say - they're great songs, and it's a pleasant surprise that Hugh sings; his voice works well with these songs!
When I went to see this movie, people in the audience were laughing at the "music video" for "Pop Goes My Heart", and I was like, "Why are you laughing?? Videos were in its infancy back then, so many of them by today's standards appear kind of goofy!" Awesome song; love the "crash" after "Pop" during the chorus. "Meaningless Kiss" is a great knock-off of "Careless Whisper" (whatever happened to the infamous saxophone solos anyway?). "Tony The Beat" is reminiscent of "Push It" by Salt N' Peppa, and for the longest time I couldn't decide if the singing during the chorus was annoying or not; eventually I decided it wasn't (although just barely).
Now, on the "current day" songs, I love the Haley Bennett songs; the best being "Buddha's Delight" and especially "Entering Bootytown." I know these songs were written to sound like the typical Britney Spears/teen pop music from a few years back, but they're great songs regardless. There's no reason why these songs wouldn't (or shouldn't) be as popular as songs by the artists in which they were inspired by.
I was angered that Haley's songs were so wonderful, but that she was just playing a character for this movie and I'd never hear anything else from her. However, I see that she will be coming out with her own album soon.
I have to commend the writers of the songs on this soundtrack. They wrote songs as if to sound like they came from a specific time period, but still they created some great songs. However the problem with loving songs by these fictional characters is that - you want more, and unfortunately it's just relegated to this one album. If Haley's material sounds anything like what appears on this soundtrack, at least that will pacify my desire to hear more from her.

What's Wrong with a Bit of Meaningless Fluff?.......2007-07-06
And why does he need these lyrics? Because the greatest female pop icon of all time, Cora (played brilliantly by newcomer Haley Bennett, hilarious as a cross between Britney Spears and Christine Aguilerra) has invited him to join her on her upcoming world tour--IF he can write the "perfect song." This would mean goodbye to performances at county fairs--goodbye to has-been-hood and hello to resurrected rock-hood!
Can they do it? Can they write THE song when they only know each other's names, are completely different in age, temperament, and just about everything else? Hey--this is Hollywood.
Just fun all the way through, and the songs (both from Grant's mythical Eighties band "Pop" and his "new" hits) are actually catchy. Very enjoyable.
Hugh, Drew, and Haley-an awesome musical pair!!.......2007-07-01

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey WrightAlbum Description

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics. The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.
2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.
3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.
Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

Album Description
Imagination Movers combine pop, hip-hop, rock and world music with educational themes for kids and their parents. The Movers sing about healthy eating, separation anxiety, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid, but the group's musical style has a decidedly grownup groove. Think Mr.. Rogers meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Regardless of how you describe it, Movers music is catchy stuff that parents and children will want to listen to over and over again! The Movers' new disc, "Calling All Movers," features the band's trademark blend of kid-friendly themes and sophisticated rock and hip-hop music. "Please and Thank You" is a Caribbean-touched homage to every parent's three favorite words. The call-and-response jam "What's in the Fridge" is evidence of the Movers' continued obsession with snack food. And "First Day of School" is a sentimental look at a milestone from a child's point of view. These and 12 other new Movers tunes will be favorites in family CD players for years to come.

A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09
This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!
The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.
Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05
TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.
Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").
While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.
Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).
Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.
Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.
Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.
