5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-05-14

"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.

5 out of 5 stars The last round-up.......2007-04-19

As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.

This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars cool water music cd.......2007-01-09

the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you

5 out of 5 stars Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09

First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.

As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.

The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.

It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.

Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.

Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!

As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.

First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.

The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.

The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!

O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?

ABSENT.

No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!

In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!

If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!

P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.

P.P.S. - Dig that bass singer!!! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09

This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection of classic Western music.......2004-12-28

Though this doesn't cover the entire Sons' career, it captures them in the full-flower of their post-Roy Rogers line-up, after founding member had returned to the group. At the time the Sons' were a 5-piece with the vocal trio of Spencer, Bob Nolan and Lloyd Perryman backed by Pat Brady on bass, Hugh Farr on fiddle and Karl Farr on guitar. All three of the instrumentalists also added vocals.

The group was well-served by the compositions of Nolan, including numerous Western standards like "Cool Water." In addition to their trademark harmonies and yodeling, the band also cut the occasional instrumental, such as the hard-swinging "Cajon Stomp" and the hot fiddle tune "The Texas Crapshooter." Forty-two finely-remastered tunes on two discs may be an oversized helping for a few, but for fans of Western song, this is an outstanding value. Those wishing a broader overview (with less detail on this particular Sons' line-up) might look at Hip-O's single-disc "Ultimate Collection," which includes earlier highpoints like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Bluebonnet Girl."

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2004-10-23

I have a lot of cassettes by the Pioneeers, some dating back to when Leonard Slye wasn't Roy Rogers yet; they are all special to me. I've read the other reviewers' comments and I agree wholeheartedly with the positive comments about this CD. I'm especially happy about one song in particular, "He's Gone, He's Gone Up the Trail", originally done by Pat Brady and Gabby Hayes (yes,Gabby Hayes) in a Roy Rogers movie. This is a real collector's item.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing stuff.......2004-10-08

This music has made a really deep impression on me; it's pure, simple, honest and...historic---it preserves a sound, a vocal and instrumental style and a world view which I'm afraid is just about dead in 2004. A real pity. In fact, it's tragic.

So get this set and experience it! It's vintage PIONEERS, at the height of their fabulous art. The bare essentials---vocal trio, bass, 2 guitars and the astounding fiddling of Hugh Farr (who famous conductor Leopold Stokowski called one of the 2 greatest living violinists during the 1940's!)

Bob Nolan's "Song of the Bandit" is like a mythical American folkloric ballad--that third verse, when the bandit comes to the girl in her dream, complete with angels and a winged horse gliding down the moonbeams---whoa!! And yet, the tune is upbeat and energetic--not at all what you would expect from the lyrics.

"So Long to the Red River Valley" is another beauty---the haunting yodeling in the final verse, with Hugh's fiddle gently wailing away---it's true ART!

"Trail Herdin' Cowboy" is another rare gem---with more amazing fiddlin' from Mr. Farr, paricularly at the very end, when the voices go into what sounds like an extended "Amen" cadence.

"Whispherin' Wind" resembles a 19th-Century "parlor" Waltz tune--rather simplistic--yet the Pioneers arrangement and performance transform it into something remarkably elegant and touching.

This performance of Bob Nolan's masterpiece "Cool Water" is MUCH better than the later ones I've heard; the RCA version included on the "Cigareets & Whusky" cd is rushed and almost sounds like they were bored with it; this version, even though it ends a bit abruptly, really captures that mythical quality which we associate with the Old West, as man interacts with nature.

AND FINALLY----"Ridin' Home"---for me, the ultimate in the Pioneer's art---profoundly beautiful, the absolute essence of the romantic spirit of the Old West (unfortunately THIS TRACK is marred by some pretty harsh crackling from the old acetate master recording---but GOD, it's still so lovely!)

Wonderful music, beatifully preserved and re-mastered.

Incidentally, I am a "classical" (symphonic) conductor by profession, but this 2-cd set has given me some of the most satisfying musical enjoyment of the past 10 years.

5 out of 5 stars "the Pioneers paint a musical landscape".......2003-03-17

This 42 song Varese Vintage Series album represents a range of The Sons of the Pioneers musical styles. Guitars are strummed as fiddles add quality of a wistful echo of sentiment, of the B-Westerns we enjoyed as little cowboys and gals. Saddle up for "The Essential Collection:The Sons of the Pioneers", as we sit round the campfire listening to lesser known works that render the ultimate of "pure Americana". Enjoy the cue "BLUE PRAIRIE", melody is deeply woven into the American landscape, blends of warmth and simplicity add a welcomed appreciation for the early days of The Western.

First rate singers, the Pioneers are also wonderful instrumentalist with this line performing ~ Bob Nolan (string bass/guitar/baritone vocals), Tim Spencer (tenor vocals), Lloyd Perryman (tenor vocals/guitar), Pat Brady (stand-up bass/vocals/comedy), Hugh Farr (fiddle/bass vocals) and Karl Farr (guitar/tenor vocals) singing and yodeling, became quickly the very definition of Western Cowboy Music. Moving tunes inclusive "WEST IS IN MY SOUL", "TRAIL HERDIN' COWBOY", "HE'S GONE, HE'S GONE UP THE TRAIL", "OPEN RANGE AHEAD", "DOWN ALONG THE SLEEPY RIO GRANDE" slow sad songs about a very difficult life in the west. Loneliness, old age and romance made a lifelong impression upon the wranglers. In closing this 2-CD-Set we enjoy "I'LL TAKE YOU HOME AGAIN KATHLEEN", traditional tune that director John Ford used in many John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara films ~ this lyrical and melodic song still tugs at your heartstrings. If you want a collection of the Pioneers, this album would be the essential choice.

From the melodious harmonies to the great cowboy tunes,
this album has it all. A totally sing-a-long experience!

3 out of 5 stars pulia.......2005-03-12

This is great music, but there is a lot of white noise on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-06-24

I love the Sons of the Pioneers. This is a great price. I bought the cd for about 3 times as much at the Roy Rogers Museum. There is no sound like the harmonies of this group. It also captures the musical style of the era.

1 out of 5 stars Good music, awful sound.......2003-08-31

One of the benefits of CD is that the background pops and hiss of vinal can be eliminated. However, nobody bothered to do that before releasing this CD. On some cuts the background hiss is so bad it is difficult to hear the music.

The music is great, the sound quality is awful. Spend your money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Pioneer Classics-No Strings Attached.......2000-08-24

If you're looking for basic down to earth versions of the Pioneers most popular songs this CD is for you. A delightful simplicity in the playing here breathes fresh life into songs we might have heard too many times. 'I'm An Old Cowhand' with Roy on lead vocal and fine fiddling by Hugh Farr, interestingly enough, has a 'One More Ride' style yodel harmony at the end, and is that Lloyd Perryman or Pat Brady slappin' that bass? Great Stuff! For a Pioneer nut like myself the spartan 'Tumbling Tumbleweeds' on this CD is worth the price of admission, and the haunting eerie mood of 'Blue Prairie' couldn't be improved upon. 'A Melody From The Sky' and 'Blue Bonnet Girl' are both tender and masterful, while the plaintive 'Empty Saddles' never sounded better. 'Over The Santa Fe Trail' is the anomaly here, it almost sounds like an experiment in weirdness, but the strange phrasing and off-key sound make it something of a conversation piece, I'm wondering if the recording might be off-speed. I think 'Cool Water' is one of the best songs ever written, maybe the definitive example of Bob Nolan's poetic genius, and this take is very nice, although I think I slightly prefer the version on 'The RCA Victor Years Vol. 1' (RCA CD (9744-2). According to an old friend of Bob Nolan's, 'Cool Water' was written by Bob back in the '30s, while he and his mule 'Dan' were walking the Mojave Desert on a trek from his cabin here in Big Bear. That story gives a wonderful vignette of Bob talking to his mule ("Keep'a movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan, he's a devil not a man, and he spreads the burnin' sand with water. Dan can you see that big green tree, where the water's runnin' free, and it's waitin' there for me and you."), as they trudged toward the cool wet shade of the Mojave Narrows almost 70 years ago. Because MCA chose not to include any notes with this release, the oddness of 'Santa Fe Trail', and somewhat uneven sound quality, I considered giving it a 4-star rating, but after many listenings, the overall content, and the sweet rarity of these selected versions begged 5 stars. A very nice collection!

With their glorious three-part harmonies and sophisticated musical arrangements, the Sons of the Pioneers more or less defined the genre known as Western music. Hip-O's hour-long, 21-track compilation is a superb overview, containing the best of the group's Decca, Vocalion, RCA Victor, and Coral recordings from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Formed in Los Angeles in the 1930s, the earliest version of the Pioneers comprised guitarist Leonard Slye (later known as Roy Rogers), bassist Bob Nolan, and singer Tim Spencer. Later members included the brothers Karl and Hugh Farr, who created the group's signature (and surpassingly jazzy) guitar and fiddle instrumentation, with its echoes of Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti; bassist Pat Brady; and singers Lloyd Perryman and Tommy Doss. Despite the personnel changes, the group's rich sound never wavered, and their mournful, melancholic evocation of the Old West on such classics as "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "Blue Prairie," "Cool Water," and "Riders in the Sky" is pure Americana. --David Hill

4 out of 5 stars FUN.......2006-08-23

This is just plain fun. You may start off enjoying it in a campy vein, but you'll find it's more than that. They know they're musicians pretending to be cowboys and they usher you along for a session of make-believe for grown-ups. They poke fun at themselves and C&W in general with lines like "I know all the songs the cowboys know 'cause I heard 'em all on the radio, yippy-kayo-kayeh." And if you liked their nutty yodelling from Way Out There in the film, "Raising Arizona" it's all over their other songs. Play this CD at a party and be forever known as a musical freak.

5 out of 5 stars Love That Sound!.......2006-03-17

Only the Sons of the Pioneers have that sound!! Great country music, and that mellow sound. If I didn't own this one yet--I'd buy it. It's good music to listen to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Not country, western........2005-05-17

I remembered hearing my folks play the old "Cool Water" record when I was a kid, and it made me pick this up. "Ultimate Collection" is almost that. It's great because we gets songs from the 30's through to the 50's, a lengthy 21 tracks, and it's most of the good stuff. Included are the classics "Way Out There", "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "Blue Prairie", "So Long To The Red River Valley", and of course "Cool Water". However I do sorely miss "Whoopee-Ti-Yi-Yo", "Cowboys Dream", and the excellent "Wind". No collection really has it all, but this one does a good enough job. Also, I doubt this is remastered, as the sound is a bit dull.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for the Music, 3 1/2 for the Quality.......2005-04-13

Terrific CD with some great sides from The Sons of the Pioneers. Tunes cover 1934 through 1954 with heavy emphasis on the earlier stuff. Surface noise on some of the old tracks can be a bit distracting. Don't believe this one was "digitally remastered."

2 out of 5 stars Quality is lacking.......2004-01-30

Yes, this is a good selection of songs from Sons of the Pioneers. Unfortunatly, the recording is also obviously created from old vinyl recordings. There is an unacceptable amount of hiss and popping on several tracks that really detracts from the music and I have yet to figure out if the recording is stereo (don't think so). I was really disappointed at the quality but for those of you who miss the nostalgia of a well-worn mono LP, give it a try. I doubt that I'll be listening to this CD much.

Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) was, during his long creative lifetime, one of the major voices in 20th-century American music. He was a noted critic, teacher and, above all, skilled composer. Like the American romantics of the 1930s (Roy Harris, Howard Hanson, and Samuel Barber, to name a few), Thomson drew from many sources, but mostly from 19th-century American folk music and dance theater (as did Aaron Copland). Captured on this disc are four of Thomson's better-known works, played with sympathy, warmth, and charm by the New Zealand SO, with American James Sedares at the helm. It's also part of Naxos's dynamic American Classics series that, so far, has yet to stumble. And, at midprice, it's also a steal. --Paul Cook

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great American Music.......2006-05-02

I must confess that my opinion of Virgil Thomson has been colored by his somewhat sharp tongued music criticism so I have not been much interested in his music. This was until I heard his Symphony on a Hymn Tune over the radio. The charm of the music and its wealth of melody changed my mind and led me to buying this disc of Virgil Thomson's music.

The music on this CD represents his entire career with the earliest music from 1926 and the latest from 1972. The Symphony on a Hymn Tune is from 1926 (revised in 1945) during the composer's years in Paris and is cast in four movements. The tune in question is a Scottish melody "How Firm a Foundation." It is as the composer described it simple and folkloric is style, evoking the America of Currier and Ives.

The Symphony No. 2 is a short work in three movements composed in 1930 and re-orchestrated in 1941. The key of C major dominated the first and third movements and the music begins with a melody upon which the symphony is based building on that theme. The Third Symphony dates back to 1932 but was expanded and re-orchestrated in 1972. The symphony is in four short movements with its inspiration coming from the quartets of Mendelssohn and Schubert - a classically inspired work utilizing the sonata form. A waltz movement is substituted for a scherzo which gives the symphony a lightness of tone. The Adagio is calm and reflective while the Finale is a charming rondo.

Pilgrims and Pioneers began as film music for a Journey to America, written for the New York World's Fair of 1964. The film, and music, tell the story of immigration to the United States using hymn tunes and evokes the folklore of the people. Thomson created an overture from the music that was first played in 1971. The music recorded here is instantly appealing. When I first played the disc, I had to start it over again; I liked Virgil Thomson's colorful use of the orchestra and enjoy the way he weaves his melodies with such lightness and color. I think this is among the best discs in Naxos' series on American composers and I can now say I have a different appreciation of Virgil Thomson.

5 out of 5 stars More American Music.......2005-10-23

Most often, the only CD's of Virgil Thomson's music you can buy are of his film music, all excellent compositions, but it is nice to have some recordings of his concert music, presented here thanks to Naxos' American Composers series.

Symphony on a Hymn Tune is just that, "variations" on the tunes How Firm a Foundation and Yes, Jesus Loves Me, and some other pentatonic themes he creates to tie the piece together. There are a few Ivesian sounds portrayed, as well as some jazzy syncopations; a great American masterpiece.

Symphony 2 is very diatonic; from the opening trumpet melody (evocative of Lt. Kije), to the lyrical andante, to the restrained, yet grand finale; it is charming from start to finish. In contrast, Symphony 3 seems to be unified through dance. Rhythm and perpetual motion seem to guide the music along. Perhaps a bit more on the serious side to begin with, the 3rd Symphony also revels in melodiousness and optimism, something shared in all of these works.

Pilgrims and Pioneers is a concert version of music written for a short film at the 1964 Worlds Fair. Again using a wide variety of hymn and folk tunes, this time it is used in a much more pondering and dissonant manner, again, almost in the manner of Ives. It is a kind of mish-mash of ideas, perfect for visualizing the American immigrant.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra plays this music with great fervor. The hall is reverberant, although, not overly so. Since most of this music is not easy to find on one CD, this disk is an easy recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a great way to discover American composers.......2001-01-09

Thanks Naxos for bringing the music of Virgil Thomson to us and even at a great price. I have been wanting to experiment in listening to more music by American composers...with this release I am happy I did. It is amazing that foreign orchestra like the very good New Zealand Symphony are playing Thomson and our orchestra seem to ignore him. Try like I did and explore more of our composers. Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Music from a very influential composer.......2000-02-16

"We all loved his music and rarely performed it." Thus Leonard Bernstein in 1989 after the death of Virgil Thomson. I have read many critics who claim his methods of composition were "forced down the throats" of students in America; others who praise him highly. I feel someplace in the middle, but the new addition to Naxos' American Classics series has nudged me a tad toward the second group.

Since many CDs no longer have any definite titles, I will give what the cover states: (8.559022). These four works are played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under James Sedares. Since the liner notes give the composer's own descriptions of much of what you will hear, I wish only to say here that (a) the "Hymn Tune" piece will be more pleasing to most listeners simply because it is the most melodic, (b) the symphonies are honest attempts to bring an American sound to the symphonic format [and you may decide how well he succeeded], and (c) they all influenced other American composers, some in a negative and some in a positive way, dpending on which critic you read. But it is all very listenable and the Naxos bargain price not to be ignored.

Most of this set was recorded for LP in 1978, but Leo Smit returned to the studios in 1993 to add some recently discovered short pieces. Smit, a friend of Copland and a composer himself, plays all of Copland's piano music with great comprehension. He sustains the flow throughout the difficult half-hour Piano Fantasy, though he doesn't create as much excitement in the Piano Variations as the composer did in 1935 on 78s (now on Pearl GEMM CD 9279). Much of Copland's piano music is occasional works or pieces for students, but the major works in the set make it well worth hearing. --Leslie Gerber

It was a pleasure to hear the complete piano music of Copland. Pianist Leo Smit brings pleasure and enlightment to the listeners ear. Who better than an American pianist to interpret the music of Copland.

4 out of 5 stars Copland's Growing Musical Style.......2001-11-06

Leo Smit has done more than just give us a complete collection of the piano music of Aaron Copland. In doing so, he has also given us a sizeable record of Copland's growth as a composer stretching from the angry tones of the Passacaglia and the Piano Variations, to the majestic and sometimes poetic Piano Fantasy, and beyond. The two CD's also showcase Copland in his many moods, sometimes light hearted and fun as in the Scherzo Humoristique and the second movement of the Piano Sonata, or sometimes nostalgic as in Down a Country Lane or the third movement of the Piano Sonata. This is a must-have for all Copland fans.

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2000-06-03

This album is one of my favorites to listen. Notice i didn't say on of my favorite MILLENCOLIN albums to listen to. it's SO good. every track is just incredible. they keep their edgy punk side on Highway Donkey, let us know they still love to goof around on Fox, and show that they really aren't just self-concious jerks on The Ballad. Their lyrics are clean and the album is uplifting and fun to listen to. they have such a great skill, these Swedes. If you've never heard Millencolin before, this is where you need to start.

2 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2006-08-10

Perhaps I was expecting too much, but I thought this set was a big letdown. In addition to the points brought up by some of the other reviewers (missing tracks, songs out of sequence, etc.), I thought the sound quality was anything but excellent. I could see some of the recordings from the 30s sounding weak, but there is no excuse for those from the 40s and 50s sounding as poor as they do. I have a ton of 40s recordings and very few sound as bad as these do. Hell, I have 78s that sound better. It's a shame as I really like the Sons of the Pioneers, but for good quality cowboy recordings going to have to stick with Riders in the Sky until some one comes up with a better set than this.

4 out of 5 stars Good box set.......2006-02-24

Just great tunes. The only problem is that they are all not there. This set is missing some great songs from the Memories from the lucky U ranch album. Instead there are multiple renditions of the same songs but 90% of this set's content is free of repeats. Great value for good recording quality of some great music.

5 out of 5 stars My Saddle Pals and I Box Set Review.......2005-10-06

I recently purchased this box set of great tunes from what I consider to be one of the premiere vocal groups of all time.

I am 54 years old and can still remember my dad playing some of these tunes on our old 78 rpm record player. The cd's are superior quality and the music sounds better today than ever.

I understand that some of the information in the attached booklet on the group may not be accurate and there is a couple mistakes on the rotation listing for some of the songs but to someone who truly enjoys most types of music this was a "must have" for my collection.

The lead and harmony vocals are clean and tight and the accompanying instruments are just right for this music.

I was not disappointed in any sense.

4 out of 5 stars Bargain-priced bonanza.......2005-08-03

For anyone who loves western music, the Sons of the Pioneers are essential listening, and this collection of 4 CD's provides 100 beautifully reproduced studio recordings from the 1930s through the 1950s. There are earlier and later versions of "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," and "Chant of the Wanderer," plus such gems as "Hills of Old Wyoming," "Timber Trail," "Out California Way," "The Last Roundup," "River of No Return," and "Montana." My only complaints are that the enclosed 50-page booklet is riddled with errors and omissions and that the selections include some dross and omit such classics as "Wagon Wheels," "Love Song of the Waterfall," and "Along the Navajo Trail."

2 out of 5 stars Pioneer box leaves me saddle sore!.......2005-07-27

Let's start off with the technical problems. First, Disc one, track five is not "The Rovin' Cowboy", but actually "Chant of the Wanderer." This really stands out when hearing a 1947 recording tossed in the middle of a bunch of 1935 recordings. Also, "Chant of the Wanderer" is the closing track on disc two, which means you get "Chant of the Wanderer" twice and NO "The Rovin' Cowboy". Ouch!
Secondly, disc four is all screwed up with it's track sequencing. The songs are printed one way, but the disc plays it another. Pretty sloppy stuff from Proper records.

Maybe it's just me, but I also felt the song selection wasn't quite up to the Proper standards. Before I heard this box set I thought I WAS a fan, but now I question that. How much of a fan can I really be, when I'm skipping 25% of the songs. Maybe I'm just a person that needs a "best of" collection. I hope Proper has the Andrews Sisters in their pipeline. But, I also hope they do a better job of quality control!

Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. You could never change the records that quickly. As I recall, the British Beatles albums from 1963 to 1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away. It basically gives each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of Songs!.......2004-02-17

This is a wonderful CD and a great one to add to your collection, regardless of whether or not you are a big fan of African music. The songs are all uplifting and joyful. This album aslo contradicts the stereotypical style of African drumming music that many think of when picturing what African music sounds like. The songs on here are melodic and use different types of instruments in addition to great vocals and harmonies.

Any time I feel a little down with every day life struggle, I just put this CD on to dance away my worries and sadness. And I hope you will feel the same way too if you are an open minded soul to the magic of world music, especially this one. "SALUTE TO HIGHLIFE PIONNERS" BRAVO to all the musicians involved.
