5 out of 5 stars Savall family extravaganza.......2006-01-27

Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras are the two giants in the Catalan early music scene. On this album they enlist the help of percussionist Pedro Estevan and their two children to produce some truly exceptional music. Jordi Savall, the most famous family member, almost fades into the background, although he is obviously the rock that anchors the album. His playing is superb, and it seems as though it was most likely him who chose the excellent repertoire. Figueras, like wine, is only improving with age. Also like wine, however, she's a bit of an acquired taste; I am a huge fan of straight tone singing and even I took a while to get used to her bizarre, raw sound. It's worth it, however, as she is one of the most intriguing singers of this era.

Daughter Arianna is a world-class artist in her own right. Like her father, she is multi-talented; she sings, plays the harp, and composes (her contribution to this album, "La Salve," is beautiful and affecting, but some of the selections on her own solo album "Bella Terra" are far superior). Like her mother, her voice is haunting and beautiful, more polished than the elder woman but slightly less interesting. She sounds particularly lovely in the background of the first track. Ferran Savall also lends his voice to the album, although his singing is far less classical sounding, which may be a plus to some listeners. "Noumi, Noumi, Yaladatii," which Figueras has previously recorded as a solo, includes a vocalise from Ferran astonishing in its power, although his one solo on this album, "La Canco Del Lladre," is the least impressive track, as his voice can be irritating after a while and the song itself is repetitive and overlong.

The instrumental tracks are universally excellent. Jordi Savall is one of the world's best viola da gamba players and this album proves that he is still at the top of his game. Arianna's virtuosic harp solo is one of the album's highlights; her playing is less restrained and more visceral than most harpists. Pedro Estevan seems to have very little to do, but a little goes a long way with this music.

I sincerely hope that this will not be the last album to feature the Savall-Figueras family together. These five musicians have produced an album of surreal beauty, not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Light of Women's Songs.......2007-04-14

The commentary on this CD opens with the most appropiate acknowledgement. Montserrat declares that "to thank others is to recognise we are not alone". Her statement is in recognition of the many roles every woman must play in life. Those roles are honoured by the grandest voice available to offer paeans for their variety and intensity.

Any attempt to describe Montserrat's vocal abilities can only show the paucity of language. As she takes us through the history of women in song, the spectrum of sublime joy through unfulfilled love to lamentations of forced marriages and forced religious dogmas. The artist conveys us through a heart-tugging array of emotions in more than a dozen steps, each a tribute to women and to Montserrat's soaring voice. Her presentation has the great advantage of seeming to come from a back garden or near-by meadow than from a studio stage. She brings an intimacy to her performances few other vocalists can match.

As with any such collection, setting your player to "Random, Repeat All" will provide endless joy as you listen to each outstanding rendition. Whether in sequence or "shuffled", the quality of her voice and the expertise of the ensemble backing her, delights the listener with the variety and emotion evoked. In some of the tracks, Montserrat is joined by other voices, Tina Aagaard and the Savalls' daughter Arianna. Among the outstanding pieces is yet another version of the canto Sibila, the chants of the Sybils which the team has rendered in several CDs performed in various locations. This one is particularly well performed, as might be done in a small chapel.

No disc by Montserrat and her consort group is ever a poor investment. This one, produced by Savall's speciality firm of Alia Vox, is another of their examples of premium quality. The sound is rich and commanding, and the accompanying notes again bespeaking of Savall's and Figuera's firm dedication to deep and thorough scholarship. The disk demands space of anyone favouring the finest sounds a human voice can produce. As a gift, it will grant you in a special place in the heart of the recipient. It is a passport to the finest listening. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

      4 out of 5 stars A family project?.......2006-09-12

This CD is very good. Jordi Savall, as Daniel Morris affirms, has done a formidable work... But... why Montserrat Figueras is in every CD? yes, she knows how to sing this repertoire... But there are GREAT singers who can do much better. We keept buying this material because it is good and important, but, Please, give us other choices!

      5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY!!.......2006-08-06

I own nearly 100 titles of Jordi Savall (Montserrat's husband), and continue to purchase new releases on his Alia Vox label. Everything in which the two of them are involved is uniformly excellent, even if a particular disc is not always my cup of tea, but sometimes there are recordings that are absolute standouts, of which this is indeed one. Just skimming through the tracks, I knew this CD was special, and listening to it in its entirety confirms that impression. This is music to be savored, music to be heard when you need refuge, an exceptional programme of lovely pieces for an exceptional voice, medieval to renaissance. Encased in a virtual hardback book of words and art, this CD is beyond even the typical high accolades Savall and Figueras merit. Do NOT miss this one!

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

I'm a long time fan of Timbuk3 and Pat & Barbara(Kooyman) Macdonald. I use their/his/her material on my community radio show often. (I cringe to hear them described as 'one hit wonders'; they are much better than that.) This cd is a great improvement from his previous effort. He is still an angry man. The songs have a tendency to stick to the same groove. I think he could have varied the selections a bit more. He's good enough not to get stuck in a musical rut. I wish liner notes were included with this release including lyrics. He tends to mumble at times. This should have been the follow up to the 'Sleeps With His Guitar' cd.

5 out of 5 stars Pat MacDonald is a manic depressive genius.......2007-06-27

It is too bad that so many artists are afflicted with severe depression... too bad for THEM, that is. The rest of us are free to enjoy the fruits of their cynical genius. Pat Mac Donald is one such tortured soul.

Timbuk 3, his Austin, Texas-based combo, helped to keep me angry through the Reagan/Bush years. Now, from his new European home, he has done the same for the W years. Great music, scathing lyrics and a window into a sharp, yet tormented mind. My idea of a great album!

      5 out of 5 stars Why oh why isn't he a superstar.......2007-06-20

This album (are they still called albums?) is more harder edged then is others and it is GREAT! hate to say it, but his pain sure makes some fantastic music. I recommend this album, and all of his others, to any one who is sick of all the prefabracted pop rock alternative music out there. Come back to the States Pat, and claim your place in the music world.

5 out of 5 stars Fully worth waiting for.......2007-04-10

Pat Macdonald, one of the now-solo halfs of Timbuk3, continues to create a deeply uncompromised music out of the idioms of the deadliest swamp blues, strained through a sharply agonized 21st century intelligence. Pat can't, won't let go of the pain, until it's time, if that time ever comes. This music was made like a Japanese samurai's sword - heated, bent, and folded, over and over, until it becomes as hard as it is supple. The edge of this music is razor-thin - three revenge songs from an collapsed marriage (according to the liner notes) - but Pat Macdonald had made an album about survival, not defeat. Not a bad song on it. Get it right now.

      1 out of 5 stars non-existant cd.......2007-03-15

has anyone heard this cd i have been waiting for my cd to arrive for months

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sampler.......2006-07-28

Let the great Christian Age fill your soul through this wonderful compilation of music both sacred and secular. In contrast to many other early and medieval music collections which may seem monotonous to the modern ear accustomed to "intolerable music" (in Solzhenitsyn's phrase), the range of percussive dances, complex harmony, and elaborate melodies don't let your attention wander. Highly recommended for all those knights and princesses in spirit. Chivalry lives!

4 out of 5 stars Recommended despite some failures.......2006-03-28

The music on this two CD compilation is excellent: well-performed, as authentic as modern scholarship allows, and wide-ranging in context.

The problem is that for anyone really interested in the material, even as a recreational listener, the liner notes are appallingly general. Perhaps even more irritating is the fact that there are no transcriptions or translations of the vocal pieces. Given the high quality of the rest of the package, this is a puzzling lapse.

4 out of 5 stars I you liked the movie "Kingdom of Heaven"..........2006-03-19

..and, like me, you are curious about the music of the time, then this is an excellant collection. This is a two CD set and seems to be a fairly good sampling of the music from that era. It also makes good background music should you need to focus on something else.

The only downside was that Windows Media Player couldn't find any album information. It's usually not a big deal to add the music information yourself, but the titles on this CD were the originals, ie. long & in Latin, Italian, and whatever else..

All in all, it was a good value for the price.

This record will transport you into a different world of sound and spirit: simpler, purer, more tranquil and serene. The program consists of chants from the 12th to the 15th centuries and includes several Sephardic songs--some quite dancelike, some rather mournful. Though the melodic range of the chants is naturally very limited, and the prevailing mood is devotional and somber, they have a lot of textural diversity. Some are purely instrumental, others are for one or two unaccompanied voices. When the tenor and bass sing alone, the latter provides a drone to the former's more florid line, or they move in open intervals, alternating between unison and solo. Their duets with the soprano combine unison, conversational give and take, and counterpoint. Most of the chants use a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, with fascinating results. The final song employs the entire group; vigorous, assertive, and celebratory, it keeps adding voices and instruments, becoming increasingly elaborate.

The performing group is most admirable. Several singers also play numerous instruments, which include a citole, a cornemuse, a hackbrett simulating a psalterion, a Persian def, and a Syrian rek, in addition to the more familiar vieles and a large variety of flutes and percussion. Among the singers, tenor Hervé Lamy is outstanding. His voice is sweet and velvety, his expressiveness both chaste and intense.

The disc's packaging is odd. The booklet gives neither the texts nor any information about the music or the performers. But both the makers of the instruments, which are, of course, modern reproductions of the ancient originals, and the dates when they were made are listed in meticulous detail. --Edith Eisler

          5 out of 5 stars SEMI-SEPHARDIC HEAVEN.......2007-02-15

This record is new to me, as is most music of this type, from this era. I've a taste for middle-eastern music, both Islamic and otherwise -- including Hindu -- and am wild about most Hungarian and Slavic music. The frankly Sephardic music I've heard I find rapturous and profoundly satisfying. This music of EL SABIO fits into that category, easily, and the musicality of the performers is distinctive in the best way.

A new favorite has appeared on my shelves.

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-08-02

This compilation is dedicated to the works and compositions of Alfonso X, 13th century King of Castile and Leon, and a Renaissance man long before the concept of Renaissance had even been conceived. Alfonso was responsible for a tremendous period of advancement in learning in medieval Europe, and was a remarkable scholar and composer in his own right. At a time when the Bishop of Paris enjoyed a library of only four volumes, Alfonso had sponsored a library in Castile with over 30,000, collecting the works Christians, Muslims and Jews into one massive complex devoted to learning and freedom of thought. In this latter vein, Alfonso was also a competent astrologer, and, some say, adept of the esoteric Art. Irrespective of this, he was ill favored by the Church, predominantly due to his tolerance of the Muslims and Jews, with whom the Christian residents of Castile lived in harmony in contrast to the balance of the known world of the day.

DuFay Collective are, in a word, brilliant, basically the Pink Martini of the music of the period. Their music never fails to transport you back in time. In this collaboration with the 13th century Castilian King, they have produced a phenomenal, almost mystical album, whose compositions are highly reminiscent of those of Hildegard von Bingen, and the evocative and mystical harmony of the album Diadema, by Vox.

Of all of the works by DuFay to date, this is, by far, my favorite. It takes the mind and soul to other places. It is truly a masterpiece, and a collaborative effort across 700 years between an enlightened King at the end of the Dark Ages, and master performers of medieval music in modern times.
