Album Description
Atlas has a well-earned reputation for being one of the most original and innovative artists of our time, both in the Middle East and in the West. The exotic Arabic scales, rhythms, and textures open up new horizons for 4/4-entrapped western pop and create possibilities for the enormous and varied Middle Eastern music scene to communicate outside itself. This collection assembles tracks from her solo albums, as well as unreleased and rare remixes, updated edited versions of her most famous songs, and a live track.Customer Reviews:

a musical menage..........2005-09-20
(she kinda looks like the woman im in love with/but that's beside the point... but that MAY be what first drew my attention/but i babble...)
umm...
completely fell in love with her 'sound'... she's a human mash-up of the middle east, india, hip hop, reggae and r&b... i dont know whether to belly dance or break dance!
(well... breakdancing might be a lil bit over the top... the 'hip hop' influence is very subtle... mostly some well placed, smoothed out 'scratching' sounds)
but i'll buy omost ANY album that covers 'i put a spell on you' and as an added extra bonus, you get her rendition of 'a man's world'... fyi - only 3 or 4 of these songs are in english... the rest is either arabic or hindi or some transmogrified verbal concoction of other-worldly conversations or sumphn...
im not bi-lingual... i can barely master this american dialect... ebonics be my mangled amalgamation for assonic communication of choice, butchall already know that right?
umm,
NATACHA...
yeah...
the sista sounds good... enjoyin this a whole lot better than M.I.A.'s album... this is just a good ol' fashion cd to me...
beautiful.

One of the original global pop divas, Natacha Atlas has long combined Middle Eastern and Western musics. Her sixth solo album is very much a continuation of works past. She continues to maintain links with her old band (Transglobal Underground's Count Dubulah produces), and she continues to add traditional and modern influences as need be. One particular standout moment is Atlas's sensual performance as she rides a straight-up bossa nova groove on "Gnanwa Bossanova," but equally strong is the slightly cheesy "Bathaddak," which sounds like it could be piped out of a cassette stall in a North African casbah. Those looking for her cosmopolitan trip-hop vibe certain will be satisfied with opener "Oully" or the menacing-sounding "Hayati Inta." No matter the genre, however, the singer really sounds best in the stripped-down arrangements here where it's her voice that exudes nuance and mood instead of counting on the accompaniment to fill in those blanks. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:
Hate it one day Love it the next!.......2007-06-13
Maybe it was the mood I was in, maybe it was the bus, but for some reason I was really diggin the exotic beats and the light mystical feel of this CD, as well as the toe tapping dance rhythms on some tracks.
The latin tracks have a great laid back sound that just picks you up and makes you drift around on a cloud, something different for Natacha that works very well.
I agree with another reviewer that the Princess Juliana presence does spoil the overall quality of this CD, only 4 stars, but apart from that it is a great CD! Much better than Something Dangerous, her worst effort.
This is a return to those wonderful rhythms that attracted me to her music in the first place, even in a modern context the rhythms are hypnotic and her singing is in top form, thanks for not doing any more English versions!. As I said I have done a backflip on this one, so please make sure you have a good listen to the whole CD before you purchase. Luck for me I had a second chance to listen to it properly. It is different again from what we know of Natacha, but a step back in the right direction.
If you really don't like the modern/western influences in this music, have a listen to my other favourite female Arabic singer Nawal Al Zoghbi, she is the real deal!!
Natacha, leave out the American/RapCrap hip hop next time and I'll give you five stars for sure!!
One of your biggest fans.

Mish Maoul is "Unbelievable!".......2006-12-28
I am a huge fan of Natacha Atlas as I own seven of her albums. Before buying Mish Maoul (Arabic for "Unbelievable!"), I logged onto the mish-maoul[dot]com website, which lets you listen to her complete album. (I highly suggest doing this before you buy! I never would have bought this album based on a 30-second listen of each track on Amazon.) Upon first listen on the Mish-Maoul website, I was repulsed by every song, because it lacked that Egyptian pop/ambient dub/drum 'n bass sound I had been so accustomed to hearing from Atlas. Mish Maoul just didn't seem like Natacha Atlas to me, but instead appeared to be too abrasive and intangible to my ears. When I would click on a song, I would find myself saying "Ugh!" and go on to the next one. After reading other positive reviews about the album, I thought I would give it another try and listen to more than just the first fifteen seconds of each song. After a complete listen, I discovered that the album was growing on me. Each song has a feel of its own and Atlas brings something new to the table: her fusion of North African, Arabic, and Western music is her most organic and indigenous release yet! She does include some ambient sounds, "Wahashni" (I Miss You) being her most atmospheric while still remaining beautifully organic. With its incessant clapping and Atlas' angelically meditative lament seeming to extract every exotic note from the qanun, "Wahashni" is definitely one of the best songs on the album.
With its hip-hop overtones, "Feen" is the album's biggest (and only) stumble; Princess Julianna's voice is too nasal and very annoying. This song is simply out of place, but can easily be skipped in the CD player. The smooth sounds from "Ghanwa Bossanova" and "Bab El Janna" are pretty good, and if you like Brazilian bossa nova, you will definitely like these two tracks. Atlas does do a great job combining Middle Eastern arrangements with the bossa nova genre. While a bit on the glitzy side, the Europop-influenced "Bathaddak" has a nice catchy tune; once again, Princess Julianna appears on this track, but just as an accent piece so as not to be too overbearing like in "Feen." An intoxicating male-female duet with the Algerian talent Sofaine Saidi, "Oully" has a hint of bossa nova percussion with a splash of Moroccan sensuality. The tribal groove "Hayati Inta" has a wonderful rhythmic North African beat, sounding as if it was recorded on the very streets of Marrakesh; Atlas' voice works very well with the male vocalists while the electric guitar reminds us of Atlas' western sensibilities. The playful "Haram Aleyk" lazily meanders between organic and electronic elements, while the rhythmic drum beats seem to rise from beneath the scorching sand of the Saharan Desert. With its pleasant string arrangements, "La Lil Khowf" is perhaps the strongest song on the album. It features English rap from the incredible Lebanese rap artist Clotaire K (You can visit ClotaireK[dot]com to view his excellent website and hear outstanding music!), followed by Atlas' trademark voice in Arabic accentuated with exotic male vocals from Sofiane Saidi. (You can also visit myspace[dot]com/sofianesaidi.) Although Mish Maoul lacks the pop feel of Atlas' other albums, "La Lil Khowf" has the greatest chance of hitting the Arab pop charts. And finally, "Yariet" takes the album to a soothing, organic close as Atlas sings to the tune of a Brazilian-flavored acoustic guitar.
The blissfully invigorating Mish Maoul is Atlas' most mature album yet and shows that, as she returns to her musical roots, Atlas is growing as a world artist. This album is filled with great drum beats, percussion, and string arrangements from the heart of the Middle East. And Atlas' voice once again does not fail to amaze! She has the absolute BEST voice in the Arab world, far outdoing Nawal al-Zoughbi, Najwa Karam, Elissa, and other mainstream Arab female singers. Atlas has the most versatile and sensual voice of them all, not to mention the most creative music which spans the globe from Middle Eastern to North African to Western. Thus, Natacha Atlas cannot be placed into a single genre of music, for she ignores cultural boundaries and celebrates humanity's musical history, making her a truly gifted world artist.
I have to say, I agree with other reviewers that if you are new to Natacha Atlas and Near Eastern music, Mish Maoul might at first seem a little too abrasive for your ears, but at least give it a try. If you are a fan of Atlas, Mish Maoul might be a bit of a shock at first, but if you listen to the album with an open mind and immerse yourself in the organic atmosphere of her album, you will become addicted. And did I mention...the album artwork is exquisite! Be sure to visit Mish-Maoul[dot]com before you buy! After this work of art, I cannot wait to hear what Natacha Atlas brings us in her next album. Classical Arabic music perhaps?
Well done, Atlas. You are "Mish Maoul"!

Album Description
Virtuoso vocalist and songwriter Guida de Palma and multi-instrumentalist Michele Chiavarini have come together to form Jazzinho. This London based outfit records and performs a repertoire of original material in an idiosyncratic style that Guida calls Jazzinho (pronounced jazz-EEN-yo). Jazzinho, loosely translated as "Sweet Little Jazz", is a luscious blend of dance rhythms, Nu-Jazz arrangements, Portuguese traditional instruments, Afro-Brazilian percussions and R&B background vocals with soulful and organic Bossa melodies. Drawing on Jobim/Gil but giving it a twist of newness with effects and dub styles, the songs travel the Bebel Gilberto road but are a little edgier. Guida sings in Portuguese (her native language) and English: although either way, the lyrics seems secondary to the constant shake of the maracas. This special US edition of the album features 14 tracks including 4 exclusive bonus remixes, 'Sim Ou Não' (Sleepwalker Re-Work), 'Constelação' (Quant Remix), 'Astral' (Gerd's Straight Mix), & 'Yambou' (Phil Asher Remix).Customer Reviews:

Rarely am I ever capable of listening to a CD without skipping tracks ~ Jazzinho afforded me this opportunity.

Five Star Effort.......2005-07-15
This is a killer album. It starts out with "Sim Ou Não" (one of the major differences between this and the others) instead of the energetic and breezy Yambou. "Sim Ou Não" is a track with that bit of attitude and tight organization - neat guitar, great hooks. Meanwhile "Yambou", which is moved towards the end of the CD, reminds me a bit of Sergio Mendes more recent work (from say 1996 with Oceano) although IMO it wasn't the best vocal arrangement for Guida. "Vertigo" was another track that takes you away... quick and... again... tight. I could go on and on about the songs; other stand-outs to me were the original "Constelacao" and "Astral". And then there are the remixes; the Sleep Walker version of "Sim Ou Nao" has a great moodiness in it and there's also the full 12" version of Phil Asher's remake to "Yambou", along with Quant's full edit of "Constelacao" - both of which are chopped a bit in different compilations. Both are stellar... Constelacao given a heavy beat and groove while Yambou has a poppy tune that'll make you wish you hit the beach more this summer.
I HIGHLY recommend this. Especially this remix version. And if you have this and like this, definitely check out Brazilution 5.2, along with some of these artists and groups: Wagon Cookin', Soul Quality Quartet, A Bossa Eletrica, Povo and Rosalia De Souza. Also - Guida features in a couple of sweet 12" (vinyls), like "O Misterio" with Nathan Haines, and a cut on Kyoto Jazz Massive's album. "O Misterio" can also be heard on Brazilution 5.3. The only gripe I have is that I actually prefered the other track order.
edit - please note that the title to this is NOT "Atlas". It is simply "Jazzinho". I cannot stress that enough. "Atlas" was the name of their new album for 2006, but now that will not be the name of the upcoming album either.
Brazilian Jazz @ its very best.......2005-04-13
Everything in this CD is absolutely awesome; the music, the style and sofisticated taste, and most importantly: Guida de Palma.
Wow !!, her voice is very special and unique, and sometimes reminiding us of singers ranging from Rosalia de Souza to Flora Purim.
There's no weak cut in this CD (and that's hard to find).
I have hundreds of Brazilian Jazz CDs, and this one is easily in the best 10, no questions asked.
I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!

The "3 Minute surprise" on this album?:
"The Sea Reivers" is a thrilling, roller-coaster ride of musical enjoyment. Having heard only the Handley version on Hyperion, I cannot imagine any other version having any more excitement or fire! Bravo!!
An incomprehensible neglection of an outstanding composer.......2002-05-25
Each new listening becomes a new delight for the ears, and deep emotions arise once an again, making this CD a unique experience, unforgivable to miss by any symphonic music lover.
I'm absolutely delighted with Hyperion, the RPO and Vernon Handley, as they keep recording Bantock's music, and I hope they will be doing so. I'm craving for more Bantock!.
A sleeper...a delight!.......2000-06-02
Though I love the initial three pieces on this CD (particularly the lovely Celtic Symphony with its gloriously peaceful opening), it is the Hebridean Symphony that is on my Desert Island list. From its brooding, dramatic opening (clearly preparing the listener for a meaningful experience) to the lovely climax and ending, this music is always totally involving. The recording is spectacular - the dynamic range is huge, and the brass the percussion make some huge punctuations; it is hard to find just one listening level for the car, in fact!
Don't miss this high point of not only British classical music, but all of music, in total! Now if only it would start showing up in local concert halls....

If Danny Elfman the film composer seems ever farther from Elfman the former cult rock icon, his work on director Ang Lee's adaptation of the Marvel Comics legend suggests he may be reinventing himself yet again. While he seems to have largely abandoned his melodic interests somewhere south of Sleepy Hollow, the diverse concerns--ranging from bright, propulsive rhythms and repetitive wind phrases through ethnic modalities of (deliberately) undetermined origin and delicate pastoral touches--suggest a textural mindset more akin to Herrmann, but informed by the incandescent, hypnotic cadences and sonorities of Steve Reich and other post-modernists. While he occasionally lapses into the overbearing tribal drum sturm und drang that may have made some listeners of his overwrought Planet of the Apes score yearn for an umbrella, they are at least leavened here by slashing horns and Middle Eastern vocal flourishes. Subtle electronic sound washes ebb and flow throughout, serving up a percolating tension the composer gleefully punctuates with blasts of brass and thunderous percussion. This isn't your mother's--or Lou Ferrigno's--Hulk, and Elfman has done a fine job of musically propelling the big green fella into the 21st century. Also features the Guns N' Roses-meets-Stone Temple Pilots line-up of Weiland, Slash, Duff McKagen, Matt Sorum, and Dave Kushner performing the angular riff-rock of "Set Me Free." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
The Elf-man Becomes The Hulk.......2007-02-21
I'm kind of upset that there is no discernible theme for "Hulk", execpt for a six-note motif that is heard all over the CD. There is the music for Bruce Banner and his father, mostly played by, I think, the duduk. Then there is Natacha Atlas who does the odious moaning on this CD. Thank God Elfman isn't at all influenced by the Oriental music style because he uses electronics and percussion to maintain the right balance between the artistic and the classic Hollywood compositions. The action music heard in 'Hulk Out', 'Hounds Of Hell', and 'The Lake Battle' is fantastic and very propulsive, good Elfman compositions. The rock song 'Set Me Free' is the last track of the CD, and deservedly so because it feels like out of context with all the rest of the album.
But not all the Middle-East influence is bad, and neither is Natacha Atlas. Because there is the track called 'Captured', which is the best musical cue of the CD. I don't know why, but when I first heard it in the movie theater, I sorta started dancing to it. It's too cool. I really love that theme, and when I got the CD and listened to it for the first time, I turned up the speakers because it's such a fine piece of music.
"Hulk" is a good composition by Danny Elfman, but I'd say 'Captured' is the real deal on this album, and if you don't like rock, then skip the last track.
Interesting eclectic mix of non-traditional Elfman music.......2005-02-21
Elfman did it again.......2004-08-20
Great Music that Leaves You Begging for More.......2004-08-16
The main theme is suprising. One would expect something loud and clamoring with brass for a character like the Hulk, and while the music does get that way at times, the Hulk's melody is actually a steady, soft melody that resonates with wonder. It almost feels like what you'd hear when looking at DNA, molecules, and whatever else would need to be involved in the Hulk's origin. In the background there is a low, appropriately grand brass.
The score uses this theme to different heights throughout, along with fast-paced drums and occasional synth instruments. The most memorable tune outside of the main theme is a Middle Eastern choral section in the second half of the score, emoting the desolation of a solitary creature like the Hulk (and used for the desert backdrop seen in the movie.)
The finale varies the theme, making it granduer, because in it's simple 12 notes, a score for a movie about science fiction makes it seem like a score for a movie about magic. It peaks curiosity, majesty, and even innocence, and then turns into the backdrop for what the movie entails as a climactic battle.
Danny Elfman has been given a large responsibility among composers. He's had to tackle the objective of composing unique themes for three different well-loved super-heroes: Batman, Spider-man, and now the Incredible Hulk. And because he is such an excellent composer, the Hulk can join these other fine scores, and I can only hope Elfman is brought back for the sequel.
Not Elfman's best, but a solid score nonetheless.......2003-10-10

With her fourth solo recording, Ayeshteni, Egyptian songstress Natacha Atlas puts her voice dead center, coming on snake-hipped, seductive, and sophisticated with a feral emotional core. Made in Cairo (with some assistance from her Transglobal Underground mates, whom Atlas has collaborated with since the early '90s), the songs swell shaabi style, incorporating trippy beats, guttural cries, sinuous strings, and a disturbing yet undeniable beauty that brings no one to mind so much as musical kindred spirit Björk. The latter is perhaps most evident on the artist's bewitching scratch-filled take on Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" and the Jacques Brel classic "Ne Me Quitte Pas," infused here with North African-by-21st-century fervor. Elsewhere, Western listeners need not fear the Arabic language; Atlas's focused delivery and challenging arrangements are more than tastefully tuneful, rather they are so compelling as to transcend language and cultural barriers. This is music of the cells, the body, and the roaming spirit; yet another way to free the mind and have the flesh follow. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

The Magic Spell of Natacha Atlas ..........2006-12-28
The traditional and modern instruments, the oud, the darbouka (percussion) and drums, occasionally the violin, viola or cello, qanun, along with the clarinet and guitar create an exciting adventurous visit to an Arabic cafe ...The programming, back up vocals, and overall stylization of music is exceptional in creating a mood and feeling which is truly cultural and authentic.
The entire CD contains music and vocals which capture the listener's attention and captivate for the entire playing time ... Take a look at the cover, Natacha's voice sounds as enticing as her extraordinairy beauty ... She has an outstanding ability to interpret the traditional cultural Arabic vocals and music into mainstream music. It is a most precious gift. Erika Borsos (pepper flower)

Wonderful!.......2007-01-26
(2) That said, this is not really a classical violin disk, per se. Kennedy complements Kroke, but does not impose himself at all--what great modesty and restraint for a player of Kennedy's renown! Bottom like, this is an awesome E. European folk disk accompanied by some of the most inspired and flawless violen playing that I have (in my admittedly limited experience) ever heard.
This is just a wonderful, fun and eclectic disk that has much to offer music lovers of a number of different persuasions. (I must admit that Ajde Jano is still my favorite track.)
Can't stop listening.......2004-02-04
I have been to Krakow and with this music in the back of my mind I am looking forward to going back again and to hopefully find folk bands which are similar to this astonishing master piece performed by Nigel Kennedy.
Enjoy!

Eden for ears and dancing feet.......2003-08-18
Eastern Folkmusic meets an incredible strings section and sometimes vocals that I like and that I don't (!!!!) like.
Kroke, the incredible Trio from Krakow, Poland is working together with Kennedy in the whole Eeast European music history and they give their chosen music a modern touch with sometimes jazzy influences I like and a really cool picked in e-violin. The album is almost very danceable and that is quite lovely. I like those tunes.
1.) Ajde Jano ... is the first track it has a really danceable lovely rhythm. I remember that tune cuz I heard it as opening track at Krokes solo tour this year in February in Germany. I absolutely don't know the vocals. I dunno why. I think after listening to it for even more times I will got to love it. I see small kids dancing at bloomy fields when I am listening to that tunes.
2.) Lullaby for Kamila ... is a melancholy tune. I really love it. I love all tragical melancholy sounds. They make me smile and the simple *mmmh mmmmmh* backup vocals are breathtaking for me.
3.) T 4.2 (hint:Tea for two) is just cool ... I heard it for the first time at the Berlin Museumsinsel Gig last year in Berlin. ... And well I was dancing on my chair ... ... (the rough mix of that piece is at "Ten pieces to save the world" without Kennedys e-violin ---> he goes crazy ... *yummy*)
4.) Eden ... is a track that is on "Ten Pieces to save the world" by Kroke as well without Kennedys e-violin and that was my favourite one of their album. It is a good way straight to Eden. That is honey for ears ( ... with feet ) FOLKY ROCK'N'ROLL, Yeah!)
5.) Dafino ... mmmmh ... that is "stolen" at one Slawish wedding party ... maybe ... ... It sounds really lovely ... I see the happy people taking each other by their hands ...
6.) Jovano Jovanke ... that is music for taking a trip on a long lonesome bad road with a even more bad car and someone in the back is telling you stories of the region where you are right now. It can be that you are on the road with horses as well but it is definitely a traditional Roadmovie soundtrack ... ... or it is the last song at one very long party ... you know when the sun is almost coming again in the morning. Everyone seems to be tired but none will stop. Just lovely. And when the sun is up. The band at the party will find new energy and kicks all their energy in the last tunes.
7.) Ederlezi ... that is originally by Goran Bregovic ... I love this interpretation ...
8.) Kasimierz ... He is Jewish and he is telling us a story ... it isn't a sad story ... it is one with happy end ... it is maybe a story about a love ... .. who cares. It is lovely.
9.) One voice ... someone is telling a sad story ... definitely ... it is without happy end. That was my first impression. That's it. I love Kennedys violinpart.
10.) Tribute to Maria Tanase ... was a Romanian singer ... she was known as East European Edith Piaf. I got some tunes of her at one Vinyl LP. She is incredible.
... well and she is dead and these tunes are for her. A better tribute cannot exist.
11.) Time 4 Time ... that is a joke with time ... and with rhythm and with folky tunes. I really love it.
12.) Vino ... means Wine ... so it is clear it can be just a drunken song ... ... it shows me how my brain looks like in delirium. ... everything isn't that clear I want to see.
13.) Lost in Time ... is just and simply wonderful.
14.) Kukush ... is my favourite track ... that is Hardcore Party. I love those tracks I love those music. I know such similar tracks from my trips I have done already to Romania. And I want to dance of course. It is my favourite, definitely before Eden!

Still inspiring.......2006-06-09
If you REALLY want the exact music from the show, there is an exclusive soundtrack that includes these tracks plus six live recordings from the show (though it costs much more). I can't tell you where online to find it because Amazon will get angry, but I'm sure if you're determined you can find it. ;)
Not as expected..........2005-12-06
Not exaclty expected, but good nonetheless........2005-10-26
Some people are angry that it doesn't have all of the tracks from the show, but none of the Cirque Du Soleil CDs do! This album was a departure from Cirque tradition, though, because it was the first CD to be released under the CIRQUE MUSIQUE label...they tried more the idea of the show, instead of the show itself. The CD and the show are two different entities, but they are both ones that I love very much!
