5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Cajun patois has long figured heavily in the music of Ann Savoy--with her husband Marc, the Savoy-Doucet Band, the Magnolia Sisters, and Linda Ronstadt--but this jazzier effort puts a different sort of French twist on her artistry. The result is continental gypsy swing in the tradition of the Hot Club, with the sprightly interplay of guitarist Tom Mitchell and violinist Kevin Wimmer recalling Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The is mood music for a variety of moods: saucy on "If You Don't I Know Who Will," dramatically bittersweet on "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," jaunty on the uptempo finale, "The Way You Look Tonight." Among the French material she interprets, listeners will recognize "Ces Petites Choses" as "These Foolish Things." Savoy compensates with the warmth of her conversational phrasing for whatever her voice lacks in range and power. --Don McLeese

    Album Description

About this CD (notes from the artist )

    Topanga Dreams
Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...

    Katyia's Dance
This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!

    China Lily
This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.

    Lhasa Love
I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!

    Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.

    Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

    5 out of 5 stars A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05

I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2004-01-01

Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. For more bamboo and metal flute improvisations, in this case without accompaniment, check out also Richard Warner's "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind".

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-07-05

I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2001-06-28

I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you want to listen and dance at the same time.......2000-08-31

This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

4 out of 5 stars Judee Sill still sounding good, but a bit addled.......2006-08-08

This is put together like a box set, but what it was put in was just cellophane, not a box. It does not have any big hit songs, so it might have been hard to sell as a box. The description on the cellophane strikes me as being entirely accurate:

Judee Sill ~ Dreams Come True
hi ~ i love you right heartily here ~ new songs
two-disc set featuring her previously unreleased 1974 3rd
album, mixed by Jim O'Rourke, plus studio and home demos,
and a 12-minute QuickTime movie of a '73 concert. Contains
a deluxe 72-page book with interviews and vintage photos.

Credits in the book for the Judee Sill Live at USC 1973 movie mention "Original video produced and recorded by Pat Blessing . . . restored by Bay Area Video Coalition Preservation Center, San Francisco, CA . . . Portrait photography of Judee Sill by Wesley Pouliot, Joan Plummer and Judy Himmel." During parts of the five songs on the video, still pictures of Judee Sill are panned. The microphones which appear in the video do not seem to be responsible for the sound, which is typical of what cameras were picking up from a distance.

For those who would not recognize the titles of the five songs that appear in the movie, I would suggest getting the many versions that are now on a 2-CD set with 19 bonus tracks that are available as the complete recordings of the Asylum years. When I bought that set, it was called `Abracadabra.' It included seven songs Live in Boston, 1971, which included more informative comments than anything on `Dreams Come True.' The quality of her singing on her demos is so great, I'm now buying every song she has been recorded doing, including the Tommy Peltier `Chariot of Astral Light' CD which has a QuickTime video of two songs on which Judee Sill was one of four people in a studio that got a decent soundtrack for `Chariot of Astral Light' and `Smile All the While.'

I like Judee Sill's gospel piano abilities slightly more than the competent guitar she plays half the time on any CD. Her voice is heavenly, but words in the early Gospel songs skewed the theology in a highly personal direction that always sounded great coming from her. I like listening to her, whatever the circumstances, and I wish I could find ways to know her songs even better. Sheet music would be nice, but I haven't seen any.

      4 out of 5 stars Dynamo.......2005-05-19

Because it's so well done, this package is a welcome addition to Judee Sill's legacy. While she is unknown by much of the public, to those who really focus on music, she is a legend. The book detailing her life is revelatory. I had heard about a troubled past, but had little understanding of the depth of problems from the alcoholic mother, abusive stepfather, brother who died, prostitution & lesbianism. While I had heard about her heroin addiction, I was unaware that she'd also had committed armed robbery. The funniest quote is from Russell Giguere, one of the original members of the Association, "She told me that she got busted for armed robbery & was so nervous she actually said, 'Okay mother sticker this is a fu*k up.'" This is the stuff from which movies are made!

But her musical muse is well in tact on her "lost album," one to be sought by those for whom "Heart Food" and the self titled Asylum LP are classic listening. "The Apocalypse Express" showcases Judee's lovely sense of melody & harmony, "Here it comes with dynamos churning, Love steady burning & knowing no rest, Savage shield is twisting & turning, screaming a sermon, That's smoldering stress." "Things Are Looking Up" has Judee's lovely vocals that seem to float effortlessly, "What a spell I'm under, I've been smiling at the Earth way up here on high, Is it any wonder that my trouble disappeared & I learned to fly?" The studio demo of "'Til Dreams Come True" is beautiful just to hear Judee playing piano sans vocals.

Of the music on the second disc, it's interesting to read about the tunes in the booklet. "Dead Time Bummer Blues" is referenced as the first song she wrote and was during her incarceration, "My cellmate stole a Cadillac & she's going home tomorrow." "Sunny Side Up Luck" has Judee's lovely sense of melody that makes you wish you could have heard the arrangement she'd have developed for the tune. "Emerald River Dance" is another delightful gem, "It seems like everyone's so afraid of the ocean 'cause they can't bear the pain, but the deeper sorrow carves in the heart of your being, the more joy you can contain." Judee's home recording of the randy tale "North Country" is a hoot, particularly when you realize it was sung by bank robber and has the cooing of a small child in the background.

Judee's life was a hard one, some of it by choice. However, the religious imagery and the exquisite sense of melody give birth to the beauty of her music. While this set is for those who already appreciate her craft, it is a welcome addition to her recorded legacy. The concern footage is also welcome for giving a glimpse of her live performance. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Get the studio albums first.......2005-04-30

Although I have given this 4 stars, this has been put together with tender loving care, with packaging which is very well done and quite unique.

I have been a Judee Sill fan since her first album came out in the very early 70's. I knew of Heart Food but not until it was unavailable. Then both became available on CD last year (or the year before) and I splashed out £40 for each - they are still selling in UK shops for about that, but they are well worth the high price.

I never knew of any other material. So this is a treat. The songs are typical of the type she wrote and the album sub-title (Hi I love you right heartily here) oozes Judee Sill-speak. I think the songs mask the troubled life she must have left. You only have to read the extraordinarily informative booklet to get an idea of the life she led a tortured soul, perhaps. However, the songs fly away on the breeze but always make a soft landing.

The film footage from 1973 on disc 2 is not great quality, but is the first I have seen of her and is very enlightening and enchanting.

So if you liked her first two albums, then you need to have this little gem - but I think you need the two studio albums first to appreciate her at her very best before embarking on this package.

5 out of 5 stars mind bogglingly awesome.......2005-03-25

let me say that iam a true fanatical fan of those two judee sill records and that HEARTFOOD in particular is one of the pinnacles of the greatest ever records..yep along side PINK MOON BLOOD ON THE TRACKS ASTRAL WEEKS the great tragedyis that she is so unknown..nice to see uncut magazine hopefully starting some sort of huge revival ..like nick drake and brian wilson have ..i urge all readers to buy the rhinohanmade versions of the first two albums immedietly...sell the car..pawn the tv..but get those cd,s..they are limited editions.and they are both total masterpieces.Anyway when i heard about DREAMS COME TRUE icouldnt beleive it.I got a copy immedietly and it does not dissapoint in anyway..The packaging is simply beautiful with a book so lovingly put together containing many interviews with those who knew her..she obviously seems to have left a huge mark on thier lives. And even more incredible is there is video footage .But its the music and her songsthat make this wonderful release one of the most exciting cd,s in years ..yesthis is as greatas her two albums i kid you not.Okay i admit it took me a good few listens over a few days before the whole thing just really blew my mind, what an incredible bunch of songs..how on earth did this go unreleased..the whole cd is heartbreakinly beautiful and so very sad...its one of those very rare releases which i just cant get outta me head.I will let other reveiwers describe its detail as m totally inebt at being rational enough o gather my thoughts clearly enough to say how much this has knocked me out..best thing ive heard this century by the greatest female singer songwriter of all time..

      5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2005-03-22

Judee Sill's first two albums are two of my favorite records of all time. They are consistently brilliant in every way. So you can imagine my great anticipation when I heard that her fabled 3rd album (plus rarities) was to be released. Needless to say, this collection does not disappoint. Disc one, which is devoted to the 3rd album "Dreams Come True", is fantastic. The 2004 mixing and mastering of these titles is tremendous, with a very rich and full sound. Interestingly enough, Judee decided to change her style a little bit. At first listen, the Sill fan will notice a much "earthier" approach. Not only in the song production (which has a very "jam session" kind of feel), but in the material itself, which is more upbeat. It's still catchy, concise and clever as hell, but in a new way - which is refreshing, because every artist should grow. Her back-up band is wonderful - there's not a misplaced note anywhere in these 8 songs (supposedly all recorded live in the studio, including Judee's lead vocal). These tunes aren't as immediately accessible as her previous ones and I think that is due in part to the strange, new environment in which we are hearing Judee's music. But once you get used to this, it's classic Judee Sill. Each of the 8 songs is a gem, but the finale in particular ("Til Dreams Come True") is an absolutely beautiful song and worth the price of the CD alone. It's just Judee and her piano running through one of the most achingly powerful performances I've ever heard. After the proper album, there are 3 demos, which are a nice touch (especially the solo piano backing track of "Dreams Come True"). Disc two is a collection of "lost songs", which are pretty much all home demos, so the scratchy, amateurish quality is to be expected. The songs themselves are great. One of the discs is enhanced, featuring an old Judee Sill video performance. It looks like she's playing in a University courtyard or something. The quality is inferior, but that's perfectly understandable and only enhances her haunting legacy. I'm happy just to see her in action. Lastly, the accompanying booklet is about 70 pages and features all you could ask of a booklet. Overall, this is an excellent collection that Sill fans and non-fans alike will surely enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars Gabrielle - Sunshine.......2005-07-02

Well what can I say about Gabrielle? She is like an Angel - Her song Sunshine is so soothing and it's like a dream. If you have not yet discovered this amazing artist - I suggest you do.
I discovered this terrific singer from a friend who lives halfway around the world - dreams can come true - every where u turn there is the Sunshien in your Window! 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation by one of the UK's leading females.......2003-06-10

Gabrielle's voice is so moving and so utterly-what's the word F-U-N-K-A-Y - that the fact that she's not more well-known around the world is a true tragedy. All of these songs are brilliantly produced and performed. I'm a big fan of her more recent album, "Rise", but the earlier material contained here is by no means less compelling.
Favorite songs: dreams, give a little more time, sunshine, rise, should i stay, out of reach, don't need the sun, if i walked away.
There are no low points on this excellent retrospective. If you're into elegant R&B & pop, you can't miss this!

      5 out of 5 stars Rise.......2002-09-25

I absolutely love Gabrielle's voice and I sincerely wish that she was more well known in the states, most Americans don't know what they are missing. I don't recall exactly how I came to purchase the CD Rise, perhaps by sheer luck. I must admit that it is one of my favourites! I would recommend Gabrielle to anyone who appreciates talent and beautiful music

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Soul From Over The Atlantic.......2002-05-21

Sadly, Gabrielle is a virtual unknown in America, but in the UK she is the most successful female solo artist since Dusty Springfield and that is certainly a huge achievement!

Evoking the spirit of soul, but with a decidedly pop-influenced style as well, Gabrielle's songs (all but one of the tracks on this greatest hits are co-written by her) are generally about love and life, overcoming heartache, standing up for one's self and becoming a better person.

Her one top 30 hit in America, 'Dreams', opens the album but is actually one of the weaker tracks vocally and melodically. On tracks like 'Forget About The World' and 'If You Really Cared' she shows a stronger, fiercer side to her voice, not to mention a more interesting talent for songwriting. She touches on very Motown territory on tracks like 'Give Me A Little More Time' (another huge standout) and 'When A Woman' and rounds the album off with haunting ballads 'Should I Stay' and 'Out Of Reach'.

Arranged chronologically, it is interesting to hear how her musical style develops over the 9 years she has been in the business. From the early-90s dance pop in 'Going Nowhere', to her experimenting with a more 'live' sound in the middle of the album, to her lessons of life in the possibly more mature second half of the album, we can experience this woman's struggles with her and relate to the things she's singing to.

Great album to chill to or even to cry to. Fingers crossed that she may still break America. We'll see. :)

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Dance/Soul At Its' Best.......2002-03-10

Though she hasn't managed to gain much ground stateside since 'Dreams' was a minor hit in the early nineties, Gabrielle remains one of the U.K.'s most popular vocalists, and listening to this collection reaffirms the justification of that popularity. Though 'Dreams' remains one of her bests, there's more here to make one question why she couldn't muster much attention beyond that track here in the states. 'Give Me Just A Little More Time'finds her mining Motown territory, while both 'Sunshine' and 'When A Woman' suggests she had more than a passing affinity for sixties girl group pop. Among the many other standouts:new track 'Don't Need The Sun To Shine'and the sterling'Out Of Reach', quite possibly her finest moment. Highly recommended.

Dreams Come True is one of the few J-Pop groups that can actually sing (along with Spitz), thanks to Miwa Yoshida. Its unfortunate that the only album released in the US market, 'Sing or Die', is not very good. Their earlier work is very good. 'Delicious' was the first DCT album I bought and it is also my favorite. 'Magic' and 'Love Unlimited' are also very good, light-hearted CDs.

      4 out of 5 stars Smashing Album.......2005-11-11

Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26

I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15

This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.

      4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25

The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.

Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.

Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.
