Confused About One Thing- Love The Album!!.......2007-04-02
Great pop!.......2006-12-22
Her voice isn't squeaky and "Barbie"ish anymore. She seems to have found her sex, and she uses it to the best of her ability on songs like "Play With Me",
"It's Your Duty", and "Bite You".
She also takes a stab at Stella Soleil's "Pretty Young Thing" which works fairly well. I believe it's her voice that makes this possible. She also originated the track "Here We Go", that Girls Aloud would later cover on their album What Will The Neighbours Say?
Her standout tracks, though, are "Virgin Superstar" and "Bad Coffee Day". I believe both songs fully represent what this woman is capable of, and I strongly believe she has a great future in music IF she can continue putting out material of this caliber.
This girl kicks booty!.......2006-08-02
Excellent in parts, but a little too much filler, amongst other things........2006-03-13
Strange subjects is a good way to peg down some of the other reasons why this album isn't a 5-star affair. Lene seems to have caught "break-out fever", the sudden rush of independence causing her to stretch her boundaries a little too much and come off a little haphazard as a result. With a little more coaxing and guiding from producers, Lene probably could've grumpily put out a much better album at the expense of a bit of her pride...but unfortunately, sometimes artists get caught up in politics and don't realize it's about the music in the end.
Regardless of the flaws inherent in this album, if you like catchy eurodance-ish tracks and find this used for cheap like I did, you might enjoy it. But those who pay full album price may find themselves with a bit of buyer's remorse.
Our darling Aqua girl has grown up .... beautifully........2005-09-11
Certain songs definitely stand out - "It's Your Duty" is a very fun and playful ode to - what else? - shaking your booty! The clever, sinfully wonderful lyrics on "Bite You" are very-well enhanced by the sing-songy, almost-childlike chorus - it's odd to hear such dirty lyrics sung in such an innocent voice, but the song works very well. And of course, the range that Lene displays throughout "Scream" is very impressive - we all know that Lene is very good at the high-pitched squeaks and squeals so famously displayed in Aqua's songs, but who knew she could also make her voice so low and sultry? I was definitely impressed. Other strong, upbeat tracks are "Virgin Superstar," "Surprise" and the title track, "Play With Me."
There are a few weak tracks - "We Wanna Party" and "Pants Up" spring to mind immediately, as they seem to be nothing more than mildly enjoyable filler songs, but the rest of the album is as strong, sexy and sassy as Lene herself :)
All-in-all, this album is a must-buy for any Aqua fan, or anyone who's a fan of playful pop tunes.

An ok album........2003-07-02
All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.
I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.
If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.
Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.
If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28

Gabby at her deeply thoughtful and soulful best.......2005-08-03
From "Ten Years Time" where she asks someone to ponder their situation in life to the triumphant "Play To Win" (probably her finest song ever) where she pleads with someone to stay determined and hopeful in spite of life complications, and the poignant "Fallen Angel" where she tries to help someone shake their demons to see their potential and validity in life, Gabrielle does not hold back on this record.
Her voice sounds incredible throughout and the musical arrangements could induce tears of joy from the beautiful sounds they create. Although this album is definitely more low key than her past releases, this is likely a reflection of where Gabrielle was in her life when writing and recording the album (fresh off a highly successful third album and Greatest Hits album and tour) and wanting to take things down a notch. Some stunning downtempo moments include the introspective "Sometimes" (which also features in Bridget Jones 2: The Edge of Reason) as well as the heartbreaking "You Used To Love Me", the affirmative "No Big Deal" and the compelling "Tumbling Down" which addresses peace conflict in the world.
The album also has tinges of country throughout, and several uptempo moments including the Cure-sounding "Stay the Same" (also a bit of a testament to Gabrielle's commitment to quality music) and the glorious hidden track "Letting Go" (also the bside to the Stay the Same single).
This album is indeed a win and will touch your heart for years to come, as will any item within Gabrielle's stunning back catalogue.

Excellent Re-Release.......2007-02-03
Contrary to the "official" Amazon review, this is not a mere compilation of older performances and recordings. This is no 'best of . . .' rehash for quick record company profits. Rather, these are fresh takes on material the original Trio performed, and the first this current trio recorded together. Comparing these to the earlier period, this December 1984 performance finds the playing not only technically superior, but also more rich, dynamic, and mature in feeling. Nowhere is this more evident than in Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and the two Concertos, where quiet passages are played with delicacy and respect, and strong ones played with pure thunder.
I prefer this 'middle period trio' to the more invasive and experimental explorations (sometimes verging on garish) of the early trio, and again prefer it to the later trio (same personnel), where the jazz explorations and improvisations have taken the backseat, becoming mere stylings at times.
The flaws (though not catastrophic by any means) lie in the engineering and recording: too much long delay reverb, and the shimmer of the cymbals and triangle are lessened by the early 16-bit digital recording. Four of five stars here.
The CD's high points (for me):
"Toccata & Fugue": like I said, delicacy, intensity, and thunder!
"Chorale: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" begins with a wonderful counterpoint between piano and bass.
"Italian Concerto": Listen for the swing stylings in the Allegro. In the Adagio, from about two minutes in to the final thematic statement, Loussier maintains the statement of the melody progression with his left hand and uses his right for free impovistation inside it--Modern Jazz heaven! Same goes for the Presto, though now it feels like a all-out blowing session.
"Chromatic Fantasy": given the walking blues beat treatment (of sorts, obviously not a blues)
"D Minor Concerto": In the improvisation passages, I'm reminded of Bill Evans Trio. Arpino's mastery, though evident throughout, is showcased here in the Allegro risoluto. After listening to this closely, re-listen to the entire album again and focus in on his usage of cymbals and the triangle (and also his spare usage of the skins). Arpino's interpretations place him in high company--with great drummers such as Gene Krupa, Shelley Manne, and Joe Morello--all of whom show the rare ability reach beyond the beat, get out of the rhythm section and interpret the melody. Nice little splash of the keys by Loussier at the end.

01 Play (Radio Edit) (3.18)
02 Play (Full Intention Remix -- Radio Edit) (3.19)
03 Play (Artful Dodger Main Remix) (4.37)
04 Play (Thunderpuss Club Remix) (8.20)
05 Love Don't Cost A Thing (Main Rap #1 feat. Puffy) (3.36)
The first 4 tracks for Play flow very nicely. The radio edit is like the album version the part took out is the 'swearing' part (Now Mr. DJ, I've asked you three times, play my mother****** song). Track 2 is a more laid back remix but very nice. To hear the full mix turn to the Aussie CD part 1! (This is part 2) Track 3 is also on the 'other' Aussie CD but I enjoy it! It sounds very much like Artful Dodger's music! Track 4 is the treat. People either love or hate it - for the amount of techno in the mix -- but in this case, everyone seems to love it and praise it -- and so do I! Track 5 is 'Love Don't Cost A Thing.' The Main Rap #1 feat. Puffy is rather pleasant. Everyone seems to hate it but it's alright.
Overall Score - 10/10
Not what this song deserves.......2003-06-01
Awesome mixes of an awesome song!.......2001-09-06
This Disc is what a CD Single was meant to be--AWESOME.......2001-08-16
#1 - Radio Edit (3:18) - I love this edit because all they really did was cut the profanity out (thank you, it doesn't need to be in there Jennifer). The song length was only cut by 14 seconds.
#2 - Full Intention Mix/Radio Version (3:18) - This is an awesome club mix that gives the song a 70's disco/funk feel. I could totally picture Cameron Diaz dancing to this mix in "Charlie's Angels." It would have fit perfectly. The beat is sped up to 140 beats per minute (as opposed to 115 in the original).
#3 - Artful Dodger Mix/Main Mix Radio (4:35) - Another really good club mix with more of a hip-hop feel to it. It does a good job mixing the vocals from "Play" with a melody line from "Love Don't Cost A Thing" and a steady, dance drum beat. There is also a little synthesizer mixed in that sounds a little bit out of place (sounds like something from Yaz or Gary Neuman from the 80's), but it doesn't bug too much.
#4 - Thunderpuss Club Mix (8:20) - This is a pretty good techno-style club mix. I don't like it as much as the others, but that might be because I get tired of the techno sound sometimes.
#5 - Love Don't Cost A Thing (Main Rap #1 Featuring Puffy) (3:35) - This is a VERY cool hip-hop style mix with a rap (~20 seconds) from Puffy/P-Diddy. I like it more than the original.
I would rate song numbers 1,2,5 with 5 stars out of 5. #3 would get 4 stars, and #4 would get 3.5. If you want to get one of J-Lo's CD singles, this is the one to get. I've got two others (Feelin So Good & Ain't It Funny), but this one is the best. "Ain't It Funny" would be a better purchase if you like her Latin stuff a lot. But this one is great if you like the original album version of "Play."

weak voices.......2006-01-21
Dont waste your money on this cd. There are a lot of singers on this cd. that dont have the voices and the range and richness to be singing this music. buy one with the best of the singers who sang in the stage productions.
LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST OF IN A SINGLE DISC.......2005-01-07
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever.
2. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is beautifully performed by Julie Covington, who was Evita at the 1976 concept album. She sounds like Madonna, only much better and the London philharmonics are the best orchestra ever used in this song. David Essex sings "Oh what a circus" with a strong voice, in my view, much better than Mandy Patinkin.
3. From "Tell me on a Sunday" we have "Take that look of your face" sung by Marti Webb. This studio version blends perfectly Marti's voice and the strong back vocals.
4."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. The one here is from the London cast recording, sung by Elaine Paige. I love Elaine's version very much, but this one is not the definite one. Her best rendition of this song, with the much matured voice, can be heard in "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004.
5. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem". Sarah Brightman is joined by a young boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston in this solemn deliverance. Very pretty.
6. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs in their single versions. In the song of the same title, we have Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley sounding very appropriate, although my favourite will always be the one with Sarah and Michael Crawford, which can be found on the American version of this compilation. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
7. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
8. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Jason Donovan with a youthful warmness. Wonderful pop piece.
9. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this next song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices are a perfect fit. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
10. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. "The perfect year" is here in its single version, sung splendidly by Dina Carroll, and it sounds much better with this orchestration than in the show on stage.
11. As we approach the end, we have an Academy Award winner, that is, "You must love me" with Madonna, from the 1996 movie version of "Evita". This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
12. The last two songs are from "Whistle down the wind". The first song has the same title and it's a pop single performed by Tina Arena. She has a really strong voice and the drums and guitars here are a well made combination. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals.
All in all, this CD is a must have for all the Webber fans. It works well as the background music or on the headphones. The booklet contains some pictures and an introductory text. The sound quality is excellent. Every song here really is a pure gold.
