Have another scoop of music--it's good for ya!.......2006-11-25
More important though for fans are the previously unreleased demos of songs that WEREN'T recorded by Pete or released by The Who. These aren't second rate bits of music by any stretch of the imagination but, in most cases, just didn't fit in with what Pete or the band wanted to put out at the time.
As with the other Scoop releases there's lyrics and liner notes by Pete discussing the various tracks and their recordings. If you purchased the previous version the sound is slightly better here as they were remastered from the original source tapes but keep in mind that many of these demos were recorded on 4 track machines, etc. in Pete's home studio vs. a modern recording studio and have some limitations (and charm)that you won't find on the finished album.
Amazing Work From a Legend.......2006-09-21
Every band seems to have, at some point in their career, put together a collection of unreleased work. The Beatles had their 3 Anthology sets, The Rolling Stones released multiple collections, and now you can have the newly rereleased Scoop albums, full of fascinating material by Pete Townshend. I'm only sorry we can't hear more.

Remastered journey through Pete's archive of demos..........2006-11-14
As with the previous editions of "Scoop" we get liner notes from Pete discussing the origin of the songs/compositions and additional background information. Some of the songs such as Pete's guitar/percussion demo for "Athena" and the unusual remake of "Eminence Front" with Pete on piano are better or different enough from the original versions to make them essential for Townshend/Who fans.
an excellent buy.......2006-10-19
At the current going price, this is a very good buy. Highly recommended.
New Edition Of Scoop Catches Us Up To The Present.......2006-09-17
This collection examines Pete's latest work, by including the newest stuff he had been working on, material that is more classical and composed, as opposed to the more rock material he wrote before. This was the first collection of new Pete material released since Psychoderelict ten years ago. It whetted the appetite, somewhat, for the new Who album that was being promised so much, but being so highly doubted. Then Wire and Glass and an October 31st release date. It's a good time to be a Who fan, as Wire And Glass was VERY promising. John and Keith are missed immeasurably, and it's debatable as to whether or not they should continue as the who.
However, and this may seem harsh, Pete has been and always will be The Who. He wrote 99% of the songs both musically and lyrically. He took the band in whatever direction he wanted to, crafted the concepts etc. And as the Scoop series illustrates, the sounds you hear on the who albums are entirely of his mind. Again, I don't mean to insult Keith or John, brilliant instrumentalists, and in John, a very good songwriter. Without John and Keith's input instrumentally, the band wouldn't have been as kinetic and electric as they were. Yes, Pete could arrange all these songs and record them easily. But could he fake chemistry? These demos all sound like demos, with a great sound, great songwriting, but no oooomph. John and Keith, greatest rhytmn section in rock history, added that oomph. Their chemistry with Pete and Roger cannot be denied. Though the sound of the who was all pete's, John and Keith took that sound and interacted with Pete, fine tuned it, electrified it, and helped make it the classic sound that it is.
Which is why they'll be missed. The new e.p. has a lot of electricity, and the bandmates do seem to click with great energy. However, it's not quite the same as that almost psychic interaction between the who that existed all the way up till moon's death. So while Pete is definitley the who, it will not be the same without Keith or John.
Sorry to go on a long tangent. The quality of the songs here is uniformly excellent. The extra material makes good segues and background music, and begs the question as to why pete hasn't scored movies, besides that awful Tommy movie. Come to think of it, his score wasn't so great on that either. Nevermind.
Basically, buy this if you have the other scoop series. It makes no sense not to.

Still a healthy "Scoop" of Pete's solo demos but could have been put on one CD.......2006-11-12
This remaster (sadly) doesn't feature any bonus tracks nor did anyone bother to add any special notes to the booklet beyond what was in the original vinyl release/CD release. That along with the fact that BOTH discs could have fit on a single CD (they come out to about 75 minutes total)suggests that this isn't really worth repurchasing if you got the first CD issue.
On the other hand if you don't own this set and are a Who/Townshend fan you're doing yourself a disservice. There's some terrific previously unreleased material contained on this set. As with later sets in his series "Scoop" (which probably inspired The Beatles to do the Anthology series)features some thrilling tracks that were surprisingly rejected for Who albums. Even the "rejects" prove Townshend's depth as a writer with fascinating melodies and thoughtful lyrics.
The sound quality is marginally better with Jon Astley doing a nice job of remastering the songs for CD. There is slightly better depth and clarity but that is all dependent upon how good the original demo sounded as well.
The songs cover Who releases (demos for "So Sad About", "Squeezebox" which has quite a bit of charm in Pete's solo version, "Bargain", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Magic Bus", "Cache, Cache" and "Love Reign O'er Me")and rejected demos for both Pete's solo albums ("You're So Clever", "Body Langauge") and The Who ("Popular" which when retooled provided the basis for "It's Hard", "Dirty Water" and "Zelda" demos for "Face Dances", "Mary" originally intended for the double "Lifehouse" album that turned into "Who's Next")as well as odd instrumentals and experiments. Most of it is tuneful and well worth listening to.
In many respects the "Scoop" series inspired other performers/writers to release their rarities/demos (Andy Partridge's "Fuzzy Warbles" series, The Beatles "Anthology" series which included band outtakes as well, Dave Davies' demo releases, etc.)and some of these releases certainly live up to the quality of Pete's first venture into the archives. If you don't have "Scoop" and are a Who/Townshend fan it's well worth picking up. If you have the previous CD edition I'd suggest spending your money on something new or with bonus tracks (or--radical thought--try and download the best songs here and save a bit of $$).

Album Description
Scoop is the new contemporary comedy from writer/director Woody Allen who stars in the film with Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and Ian McShane. Scoop is the second consecutive picture that the filmmaker has set and shot in London (following Match Point). The soundtrack for Scoop includes several classical tracks hand-picked by Woody Allen.Woody Allen reports that he chose the music based on "his instincts about what would work in the film."Capturing the playful spirit of the film, the soundtrack's lush orchestrations and quick tempo complement the mysterious motif of the story. The soundtrack consists almost entirely of beautiful classical music by Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Johann Strauss -- a unique assemblage for any soundtrack, especially one from a movie not entirely about classical music itself. These timeless melodies from The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Peer Gynt will be recognized with pleasure by every listener.
Scoop tells the story of Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson), a student journalist for a college paper visiting friends in London who happens upon the scoop of a lifetime. Along the investigative trail, she finds magic, murder, mystery -- and perhaps love, with British aristocrat Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman).

Review by William Cuddy - age 9.......2006-12-19
Scoop has comedy in almost every corner, a plot that seems elaborate but is simple for its viewers. I understand why all who watch it seem to get the giggles. It's an amazing film, but then again most of Woody Allen's films are funny and clever. Scoop mixes the suspense of his earlier movie, Match Point, with the current comedy of Scoop. The reality beats that of Casino Royale by far. Scoop's one-liners and physical comedy make it one of his funnier films. Some reviewers of his previous film, Match Point (such as Stylus Magazine), have given Scoop a bad review because they think it is too similar. This is not true, as Scoop follows quite a different story - for example, the appearance of Ghosts. It inflicts no damage on Allen's career. Now, onto the movie itself.
We start off with the death of the celebrity journalist, Joe Strombel, a reporter who is the foundation of the movie, and is the main cause of its beginning and end. We cut to a scene of Joe Strombel, and a group of people on a mangy boat. When we cut to the boat piloted by Death, it seems Strombel has been there almost an hour, and he has met a secretary. This secretary hands the scoop to Joe Strombel, and Strombel jumps off the boat to return to earth as a ghost. Earlier, Sondra Pransky, a journalist in training, had made off with a Film Director, and had now gone to see a Magician called Splendido (Sid in cast, and Woody Allen in life). She is picked to be put in a disappearing box (the kind that makes you disappear), and through that, she meets the deceased Strombel. Strombel tells her he had a giant scoop on his hands, saying that the mysterious Tarot card killer was Peter Limen, Lord Limen's son. But then Strombel mysteriously disappears, and when Sid, (Splendido) opens the box, Sondra had also disappeared; I believe this was a by-product of Strombel's disappearance. Sondra Pransky then drags Sid out to look at Peter Limen, the person who was supposed by Strombel to be the killer. She pretends to drown, and by then has, at that moment, won over his heart. I shall not spoil any more of the movie, for the sake of the pre-viewers. I give the film of which I have reviewed a great big comedic 9/10. I say, a Jolly Good film.
Another Comedic Masterpiece - Thank You Woodie Allen!.......2006-12-12
By now, most of us who have seen more than one Woody Allen movie, are familiar with his usual themes: Jungian symbolism, human frailty, love, and above all else, life's rich pageant of absurdity. I could see how to some, this could be an old, tired formula, but I don't agree at all. In the hands of the genius who created it, it is still fresh, interesting, and relevant. With a brilliant cast starring Woody Allen, the smart and sexy Scarlet Johansen and the suave, debonair and deranged, Hugh Jackman, this movie is a winning formula.
Just as Bob Dylan's music has returned to the simplicity of its origins, so has Woody Allen come full circle. Like Dylan, this is not to lean on something tried and true, but to come back and perfect it. This movie is highly entertaining and extremely funny. So, stick some popcorn in the microwave and prepare to be thoroughly entertained.

one to own.......2002-10-12
I've just found this band, in a search to find some balance between my love of jazz and lindy-hoppin' hobby. The collection spans from Brubeck to Duke to Ella and Satchmo and Getz. And then there's Louis Prima - that's where this fits in (it's obvious that he's mimicking the style, and a given in the redo of "Angelina Zoom Zoom"). Sure, it's great for swing dancing. But it's better than most of the "neo-Swing" stuff that's out there. Just listen to the sample clips and you'll hear for yourself. Want comparisons of other popular ones? Cherry Poppin' Daddies (quite a contrast, eh? This one is pretty shameful) Good ones include older Mighty Blue Kings (Uptown), Rhythm Rockets, and Lavay Smith. At the very least. You just have to find them. This is one of 'em. Cheers!
