5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2000-07-22

I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florence during my trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it has captured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favorite of all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumental and can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir the wanderlust for a trip back to Italy! A must for every romantic!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding compilation of the Italian classics,.......1999-05-01

I have been a music lover for years. This CD introduced some Italian music to me that I was not familiar with. I listen to this music very often...it is almost theraputic in effect. I have never heard more beautiful music together on one CD. You won't regret getting this one!

Well, it is a La Face record, so of course it has the Babyface stamp all over it--especially on "Let It Flow," also featured on his Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, and "There's No Me Without You." 'Face does step aside, however, to give other producers, songwriters, and artists their time with Miss Braxton, most notably R. Kelly, Diane Warren, Tony Rich, and Kenny G. R&B songbirds in their own right, Shanice Wilson and Chante Moore even show up on backing vocals. The album doesn't quite live up to this overdose of talent; it's too crammed with boring ballads (even if Braxton's low, husky vocals are perfectly suited for them, especially the wrenching watermark of the album, "Un-Break My Heart"). It's when she slips into a sultry groove on "Come On Over Here" and the smash single "You're Makin Me High" that she really shines. --Rebecca Wallwork

2 out of 5 stars Boring CD.......2007-06-04

There is only one really good song, "Un-break my heart", which warms my heart with the sadness of the emotions of this song. The other song I can stand is "How could an angel break my heart", but the rest of the songs are not good in any way. Boring music, no melodies, they sound really rushed.

5 out of 5 stars The good old days A... Toni.......2007-05-20

Everyone knows of Toni Braxton and this cd was one of the reasons why.

5 out of 5 stars amazing r&b/jazzy/soft rock album.......2006-12-31

I bought this album sometime after Unbreak My Heart was released, I was about 13. I thought it was one of the best albums I owned and it's aged really nicely too. I still listen to it time to time when relaxing. She may have played it safe with her sophomore album by working with hot r&b producers like babyface, r.kelly and tony rich, but it really works. The ballads are beautiful and smoky hot and her voice blends into the music so beautifully. A lot of singles were released from this album from 1996 through 1997, some of which were just released to radio while others had music videos. I remember her getting a lot of billboard, ama and grammy awards at the time in her revealing dresses, and her being the talk of the award shows the next day at school. Another memory is the remix of you're making me high that had a reggae/hip hop vibe to it. Just be warned that this CD doesn't really have any fast tracks, it's mostly soft, jazzy r&b ballads.

5 out of 5 stars still the best.......2006-03-10

after 10 years on release secrets still is one of my fav albums.I brought this album when i was ten ( YEAH A LIL DEEP FOR A TEN YEAR OLD BUT HEY THATS ME) now im all grown up i can appreicate this album for what it is ,a magnificent collection of pure bliss.Toni's voice is rich and emotive while the music is what truly makes this album one of the greatest ,melodic ,seductive and sexy bests. evey track just flows .The best tracks for me are let if flow love the guitar arragement,i love me some him, theres no me without you, find me a man and the timeless beauty that is how could an angel break my heart.Lovely saxaphone from kenny g flawless songwriting from babyface (one of my favs) and the beautiful voice of toni .

what i love about toni is the way she pronounces every single letter of the lyrics she sings so amazingly.Toni might be on album number 5 but this will always be her higest moment .x

5 out of 5 stars Romantic & Relaxing.......2006-03-04

This is one of her best albums in my opinion, and I have 8 of her albums. If you're into her upbeat and fast tracks, then I wouldn't recommend this one. This one is very romantic and relaxing.

The perfect matchup of singer, song, and producer is a wondrous thing, and no more so in the producer-driven realm of black pop. Such a wonderful moment was the debut from Toni Braxton who, in Kenneth Babyface Edmonds, had an uber lord who tapped into the dark yet radio-friendly recess of her soul. Braxton gives nobility to heartbreak with classics like "Breathe Again." Her debut remains one of the best of the '90s. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Toni hit on all cylinders with this album!!!.......2007-02-13

Toni,was NOT,ashamed,to show,that,it is not a crime,for a woman to show hurt,for being betrayed,by a lover...Most women today,think that it's the mark of a "weak"woman,to,admit to being hurt,by this heartless,act!!Everyone knows'that women,are creatures'of sheer emotion...Yet,the prevailent thought,among,"tough"women,is that NO man,could cause them emotional distress,under ANY circumstances!!With songs'such as "7 Whole Days"and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home"Toni basically says'"Hogwash"to that(silly)train of thought!! Toni expertly navigates'the razor-thin line,between,total emotional devastation/despair,and bravery,with a tinge of anger...(when one realizes'that it's NOT,the end of the world)...Toni,exudes'RAW emotion,in conveying this!! On"Love Affair"Toni lets'us know,that she's not gonna be some dudes'little side"trick"..She cites'that she couldn't respect herself,if she did that!! It,would behoove,a lot of young ladies',to listen carefully,to the lyrics'of this track!!Theres definitely something to be learned here!!!"Best Friend" touches'on how fickle,"friends"(as well as lovers')can be!!One can clearly see that Toni has experienced a lot,in her life,simply by noting,the various topics'she addresses,on this masterpiece,of an album,as well as the sincere PASSION,she exhibits',in the vocals'on this album!!Toni,gets madd props'from me,for this album,because,I've experienced,most of these dilemmas'firsthand,so,I know EXACTLY,where shes' coming from,on each subject!!Excellent vocals'+True-to-life subject- matter=5 star album!!'Nuff Said!!

4 out of 5 stars CD Yes! Live Singing No!.......2006-11-09

After seeing Toni's show in my hometown Las Vegas,I was truly disappointed. Toni's album is very good. She leaves her personal problems out. However, her voice and personal problems were brought out too abruptly at the show!

5 out of 5 stars Toni Braxton's Greatest Album.......2006-06-29

This woman had it really going on her debut! Toni Braxton, born in Maryland on October 7, 1966, is a six-time Grammy award winner. She released her self-titled debut in 1992. She won all six of those grammies for this one album, including Best New Artist! Her debut went to sell 8 million copies in the United States and 10 million worldwide! Also, it stayed #1 for 2 weeks.

The great songs of this album include "Breathe Again," "Seven Whole Days," and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home Last Night," which made it to the Boomerang Soundtrack. The other songs that topped the Billboard charts are "How Many Ways," and "You Mean The World To Me."

Now that you know about this album, you should go get it!

3 out of 5 stars Toni the Hottie.......2006-06-07

I dont remember when Toni first released her debut album. I think it was about 10 years ago. I was mesmerised by her looks, voice and the songs she sang. Every song is sung with a deep feeling. At times she reminds me of Whitney Houston. You mean the world to me, Another sad love song and Breath again are my favorites. I havent heard the rest of the album though. Try it if you wish to.

5 out of 5 stars Grammy-winning, "Boomerang" showpiece debut.......2006-03-19

Toni Braxton really can sing and she's one of several artists still around whose talent gets ignored because she's not the latest "flavor of the month."

This debut really was back in the "good ole days" as far as her career ... remember that Babyface sound was just coming in with artists like Toni and TLC.

She won a couple of Grammys for this album and they were well deserved.

This isn't necessarily a happy, uplifting kind of album, but it's a cool, smooth vibed LP that's perfect for every mood of modern day relationships as "relationship" type music goes.

"Seven Whole Days," "Another Sad Love Song" and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" are the midtempo, though scorned lover-inspired tunes that made Toni famous (though my dad still laments 10+ years later that Toni's music is "never happy").

Everybody either remembers or should know that "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" was the blockbuster single that emerged from the soundtrack of the 1992 hit movie "Boomerang" -- I'll never be able to hear this song without that Halle Berry-coined phrase from the movie going through my head ("Love? Don't talk 2 me about Love!!!! Love, Shoulda Brought'cha ass home last night!!!!" -- a timeless catchphrase, at least in Black America).

Her quote, unquote "happy" song on this LP is "Breathe Again," another hit single conjuring images of deep love on another level.

Toni's music is less soulful and more distressed than even Mary J. Blige's early stuff, but Toni's always had the better voice. She's not quite a Whitney or Mariah, but she's definitely above Mary J., Janet Jackson and Aaliyah -- top female R&B artists who all shined in the '90s.

This is, however, another "must have" CD for all 1990s R&B fans.

This debut was easily one of the Top 10 albums (in popularity and sales) of the decade.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2007-05-19

Love, love, love this CD. It has mostly every hot hit Toni Braxton made. If you buy no other Toni Braxton CD, you'll be very satisfied with owning this one. This CD hasn't moved from my car CD player since I first played it.

I do have one observation. Almost every song is about a man messing up. It seems to be the theme throughout this CD, and listening to song after song about heartache and pain can get a little much after a while. But with Toni's voice, she can sing about anything she wants and I'll listen because she can even make heartache sound good.

4 out of 5 stars denlan.......2007-02-04

This CD is good but she is the tipical recording artist with the voice fixed mecanically in studio. I saw her in Las Vegas january 26 2007 and she has no voice at all. She fools around with the crowd half of the show without singing (She loves her body) and when she sings we hear only scattered sounds covered by the band. Her background singers (her two sisters) have a lot more better voice than her's. I saw a lot of shows in Las Vegas, it's the worst. I saw Celine Dion and Tom Jones and beleive me the are not in the same league, wow, they have the voice.

5 out of 5 stars I Love me some Her!.......2006-05-26

So it has everything you could want, minus a few but with so many hits your bound to get screwed somewhere...BUT, the point is that what is included is just what we want. Great ballads like 'Un-Break My Heart', 'I Don't Want To' and 'Another Sad Love Song' are here beside dance numbers like the steamy 'You're Makin' Me High' and 'He Wasn't Man Enough'. Toss in some great old school tracks like 'Breathe Again' (still love that song) and 'Give You My Heart', some more recent tracks like 'I Love me Some Hime' and 'Hit The Freeway' and then add some brand new songs (the only good one being 'Whatchu Need' since 'The Little Things' sounds too much like 'Another Sad Love Song') and you have a hit maker...now I will say that the dance remix of 'Un-Break My Heart' rapes the song of all heart and soul but whats one drawback to a bag od success? Great album.
Full track list is as follows:
1. Give U My Heart 5/5
2. Love Shoulda Brought You Home 4/5
3. Another Sad Love Song 5/5

4 out of 5 stars Great collection from an R&B songstress!.......2006-02-22

Over the past 13 years, Toni Braxton has released four proper studio albums, which have each been mixed bags in terms of both genre and quality. For the most part, Ultimate Toni Braxton cuts the filler and presents a decades-worth of pop/r&b hits by one of the most recognizable voices in recent music history.

"Another Sad Love Song", "Un-Break My Heart". "Breathe Again", "He Wasn't Man Enough", "You're Makin' Me High" and "You Mean The World To Me" are all radio staples worth revisiting, and several of the songs found here, including "Let It Flow" and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home", have enhanced the films in which they were originally featured. ('Waiting To Exhale' and 'Boomerang', respectively)

As a perk, the versions of songs on Ultimate are the versions heard every 30 minutes on the radio back in the 90's. It's often disappointing to pick up an artists CD, only to realize there are an additional two minutes of the hit single(s) that you don't (and don't care to) know. This is the only Toni Braxton release to contain her debut single, a collaboration with Babyface (not so much a duet...there's more Toni than Kenny) from the 'Boomerang' movie soundtrack called "Give U My Heart".

In addition, there are two new recordings. The fun and essential Rodney Jerkins production "Whatchu Need", is easily Toni's best song since 2000's "He Wasn't Man Enough", while "The Little Things" is a yawn-fest R. Kelly rehash of "I Don't Want To", the song he penned for her in 1996, already included on this CD. The grand finale is a previously unreleased radio cut of the Hex Hector remix for "Un-Break My Heart". More effort could have been put into the sleeve art though.

Whatever is in the future for Toni Braxton, her legacy has already been conjured up. No matter what happens here, the voice she has recorded will continue to inspire so many actresses and vocalists. I just keep hoping that people will still continue to enjoy Toni Braxton's music for a very, very long time. That isn't a sad love song to sing about. A solid collection worthy of a place in any pop and R&B music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Toni and her soulful voice.......2005-12-11

Its just the perfect album to spin while you have a long bubble bath with scented candles around you.

Toni's voice never fails to make me get dreamy and all tingly inside.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-01

Polychoral music-music written for several groups of musicians separated spatially-was not peculiar to Venice, but it was associated with the Basilica of San Marco and ceremonial events in the Venetian cultural calendar.
Chordal writing reached its peak in the polychoral works of Giovanni Gabrieli(1555-1612), the principal church composer in Italy of the progressive development. He not only increased the number of choirs to four and the total pitch range to over four octaves, but also juxtaposed passages of conventional rhythm with strikingly jagged suncopated motifs. These dramatic contrasts were further intensified by occasional chromatic harmony and unusual dissonances and, more significantly, by the use of instruments that alternated or combined with the voices. All of these traits are well demonstrated in the music on disc 1 of this set. His music is wonderfully exciting!!!!
Upon his death, Monteverdi succeeded him, and took his own direction musically; much different from Gabrielli. It is not just that their styles are different, but the instrumentation is much different as you will hear upon listening to disc 2.
Two subsequent directors of music represented here are Legrenzi and Lotti, both primarily opera composers.
Vivaldi had no direct connection with the basililca; he worked at the 'Pieta', and his motet 'Clarae stellae' was written for a 'Signora Gertruda, a singer who sang at the Pieta. This is one of the most attractive pieces on disc 2, and is often recorded by countertenors (altos)but on this disc is sung by Randi Stene, mezzo soprano, who sings it quite well. Andreas Scholl has recorded this, and I do personally prefer Scholl's countertenor quality for this particular piece.
Monteverdi's 'Currite populi' is another favorite of mine, and its excellently performed herein.
There is just so much to enjoy on these two discs for the early music lover. The instruments are very skillfully played and the styles of the various composers are adhered to all the time. The balance between the voices and the instruments is perfect as one might expect from Parrott's performers. The soloists: Emily van Evera (soprano), Randi Stene (mezzo) and Jeffrey Thomas (tenor) all sang with the correct emotional investment. Certainly worth listening to!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review .......2007-01-09

Venetian Church Music?....never thought I'd be listening to that, anyway this music is for those who seek it out, If thats not you this probably won't interest you (but you can try some renaissance/baroque experimental listening to see if you'd like it!). If your into this though, this is a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional tone quality.......2006-03-28

When I purchased this recording, I had not yet had the pleasure of owning an Andrew Parrott/Taverner Consort recording. I was so impressed! Andrew really excercises an understanding of this genre, an understanding that I haven't often seen. In particular I was quite pleased with this rendintion of Gabrieli's "In ecclesiis" (although the Bass, I don't know his name, is too lacking in volume). Other than that, I just adore this CD set. I also recommend Andrew Parrot for anything predating Bach (*not including Bach!). There is a 5 CD of particular interest and quality called "From Monteverdi to Vivaldi" by this same ensemble that you might consider purchasing instead of this set (almost exact same price, and one of the CDs- the better of the two in this set- is included in the 5CD set).

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Andrew Parrott.......2005-08-04

Who else but Andrew Parrott?! The fabulous adventurer in the field of early music, Parrott has time and again unearthed unknown masterpieces, shedding light on their original luster through a keen sense of the historical settings, employment of the proper historic instruments & period vocal style, and his own inspired musicianship. Throughout the 2nd half of the 20th century music lovers like me knew the works of Gabrieli through the appropriations by well-meaning ensembles of modern brass instruments: Chicago Symphony Brass, Canadian Brass, etc. Parrott has been the first to perform and record many of these works with early 17th century instruments, providing a restored sonic image for the 21st century connoisseur. Bravo! Encore, please!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous introduction to Venetian sacred music.......2003-07-24

This fantastic collection of music is probably one of the best introductions to Venetian Baroque (early to late) on offer.
The first disc, devoted to Giovanni Gabrieli, is nothing short of amazing. Cornetts, Baroque violins, tenor cornetts, sackbuts and multiple organs (try the first track - the huge Dulcis Jesu patris imago à 20 voci) can be heard on this disc and they are all played with great panache, style and, most importantly, expression. I bought both of these discs when they were issued on EMI Reflex over ten years ago - and I have never stopped loving these magnificent and colourful performances.

If you want only one recording of Giovanni Gabrieli's music - then this might be the one for you! The other might be the Gabrieli Consort's 'A Venetian Coronation'? (if you want two Gabrieli recordings in your collection!)

The second disc contains a very tasty selection of music by Legrenzi, Monteverdi, Vivaldi and, again, Giovanni Gabrieli (the star of the show!).

If you want to know what 8 cornetts and 16 sackbuts sound like - then this is the place to go! The singing and playing from all concerned is excellent.

I love this CD and I bought this reissue because my old EMI CDs were getting a bit old!

Album Description

Toni Collette delivers a velvet gloved punch with her much anticipated debut album, which contains eleven self-penned tracks written over the last ten years. 'Beautiful Awkward Pictures' charts Collette's fluctuating emotions as she's worked her way round the globe and reflects her growth as a person and an artist. Laying herself open in her usual honest and unaffected way, Collette's lyrics are often poetic, intimate observations of life and the world around her and this makes for a heady, soul-stirring mix.

5 out of 5 stars Artistically deep and beautiful.......2007-05-25

I'd never heard of Toni Collette & The Finish until I did a web search on Toni Collette after being very impressed with her role in the recent movie 'Little Miss Sunshine'. I saw Muriel's Wedding years ago and have always cherished her portrayal in that film.

As soon as I listened to music samples on her band's website, I was taken in in a way that has only happened to me once before, in regards to bands. Her music has a genuine, clear depth. Each listen reveals a different part of a multi-faceted, beautiful, soulful crystal. The music holds heartfelt mysteries and is unabashed. The songs and lyrics are very well-crafted. And her voice is so true in clarity, raw with emotion yet polished by grace - it is unfettered, real, and pretty!

I would highly recommend this cd, it's unlike anything I've ever heard before. I look forward to many more listenings as I fall more in love with each listen.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-02-19

What a brilliant album!

Admittedly, I was inspired by her name to invest in this product - and anyone who saw her as the lead in Broadway's "The Wild Party" will agree that that is not a bad thing. This woman can SING! Toni's voice is mellow, subtle and STRONG...

The instrumentation thoughout this album is superb. Toni has surrounded herself with the best mix of musicians and producers etc to get everything out of this recording experience.

First single "Beautiful Awkward Pictures" is simply gorgeous - second single "Look Up" is more energised and, like the rest of this album, affects you spiritually (in a positive way) before you realise it has even touched your soul.

This album is non-pretentious; non-diva; no-holds-barred, unabbreviated and unadulterated brilliance.

The only way this could be improved is by adding some bonus material ("Don't Dream It's Over" from the "Cosi" soundtrack . . .) hopefully a DVD with a live performance and the promo-video's will be released when the promotion is closing up...

Initial Australian pressings of this CD had a mastering fault in the eleventh track - I contacted the supplier (via toni's website) and they happily exchanged it by mail to a corrected copy. Hopefully this won't stop people from enjoying this amazing CD.[...]

...but she can sing and write music too! Beautiful Awkward Pictures is an exquisite piece of work. Mellow, soothing, calm...I'm gonna run out of words. It's just plain beautiful. They're about to start touring out here in Australia. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a talent....why no more music????.......2007-04-05

I still recall watching the 1989 Grammy Awards where Melissa Etheridge, Sinead O'Connor and Toni Childs all performed (they were each nominated for best new artist, I believe, although it may have been for best Rock Female Performance). All three were fantastic, but Toni Childs blew me away. I would have thought she would have had more staying power.

She has one of the most impressive voices ever recorded. There is not a single bad song on this CD--I have gone through the LP, then the cassette, and now the CD. Her versatility is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-03-05

This album should have turned Toni Childs into a superstar with her haunting voice and moving lyrics. It did not. It's been 19 years since this came out and it is still better than any of the Beyonce/Shakira crap that passes as music these days. There is not one bad song on here but Zimbabwae and Don't Walk Away (a minor hit single) really stand out. My favorite is Dreamer for it's moody minimalistic music behind her powerful voice. No one I know even knows who she is but this is a great album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Union Stands with the Best .......2006-11-19

I love music of all genres, as long as it's good. I admit, however, that I have a fondness for "women" singers - especially if they're original. Toni Chiles is about original as they come, in company with artists Joan Armitrading, Phoebe Snow, Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams and perhaps a handful or two others. Certainly, there are other female singers of great talent besides these. However, few can grab and twist your insides with a keen the way they can; listening to their music is often a true emotional experience.

Toni Chiles received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist on the strength of Union. She didn't win that year and her follow-up release, while including some very decent material, pales in comparison to this CD. But that can fairly be said about many CDs in comaprison to Union, from a long list of other artists; Union is that good. Be forewarned that Ms. Chiles has a very unconventional voice. It's harsh, sometimes to the point of ugly. But it is fierce, plaintively vulnerable and beautiful at the same time. And rawly visceral.

If you are trolling for something "new" that's exceptional, why not try something perhaps older but with at least as much freshness and originality as that offered by many contemporary singers. Once you grow accustomed to her unique and brilliant artistry, I don't believe it likely that you will ever tire of listening to Ms. Chiles' masterwork, Union.

4 out of 5 stars Intense with positive pleasures for your`e ears.......2006-09-26

Toni Childs has a very intense voice that sparks quality. She bend`s here voice sometimes in directions that glimmers in your`e ear. Track 1 Don`t walk away has a quality rytmic feel that makes your`e blood
warm. This has big band beat, and Childs make it quite extraordinary. Track 2 Walk and talk like angels is in an another mood. It`s more laidback in it`s musical structure, and has a slowmood ballad form that fits Childs quite good. Track 3 Stop your fussin has that extraordinary melodious hit feel over it`s form and content. Goodie goodie for your ears. Track 4 Dreamer is a ballad that not hit the mark. It`s too thin, with just synth blippers and blopper to make the musikal background up against Childs voice. Very ordinary. Track 5 Let the rain come down has the charm.it`s lightweight but full of "jungle passion" with it`s humming choir in the background. Track 6 Zimbabwae has also a touch of african jungle feel over it`s atmosphere. She sure hit`s the right musical spot on this one. Track 7 Hush is the lighthearted quite atmospheric little gem on the cd, and it`s right on the right track alltrough. Track 8 Tin Drum is the reaggea and funky influenced song on the cd, and it`s quite good. Track 9 Where`s the ocean is a ballad that shows first a great voice that lifts a quite ordinary song. Anyway Toni Child`s has the right quality touch all trough.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering 'Union' & an update on Toni Childs.......2006-08-26

This is a wildly under-rated and under-appreciated album. I have been constantly surprised that this album has not made it on to any music industry must-have lists. Even though 'Union' was released in 1988 it has retained a timelessness that I think increasingly marks it as an original classic. Nothing else sounded like it when it was released, and its hard to think of anything that has come close to 'Union's sense of late 80's capitalist-revolt, and hippy-revival (God, wasn't that short lived!). 'Union' is a near perfect statement about the remembrance of love-lost and the comfort of idealistic belief. It is a cry for activism and out-reach, while suggesting the tending of individual emotional well being... and yes, it is a little 'hokey' in places. But as long as you are not scared of anything that suggests 'feral hippies' then 'Union' belongs in any serious music collector's catalogue, while Toni Childs herself deserves far more respect and exposure than she has been afforded at this point by the music industry.

Admittedly there are one or two tracks on 'Union' which are now sounding a little dated, especially the opening 80's rock thumper 'Don't Walk Away', complete with responding trumpet chorus. But, even this track still manages to portray a sense of perfection and immediacy which will endear itself to anyone who knows the confusion of denial and rage that exists when someone walks out on them. (If you managed to find a copy of the extended mix of this track, it is well worth it!). This track is also somewhat disjointed from the rest of the album, which as a whole still remains incredibly consistent.

Much has been said of Union's use of African beats and other World Music influences, especially on 'Let The Rain Come Down' and 'Zimbabwe'. This is certainly apparent, but what is also obvious is that Toni Child's makes imaginative use of her already unique voice throughout the album. There are lots of non-verbal sounds that rise out of her throat and just seem so perfectly communicative.

Toni Childs' music really sold well in New Zealand & Australia than perhaps it ever has in the States. However, it should be noted that Toni Childs has been nominated for music awards numerous times. 'Union' alone received a few Grammy nominations in 1989, and even her critically under-valued 1994 album 'The Woman's Boat' received a Grammy nomination for 'Best Female Vocal'. Furthermore, Toni Child's received an Emmy Award in 2004 for a track she wrote for a television documentary. Otherwise it has been unfortunate that Toni Childs has largely been absence from the music scene since 1994. However, this is all about to change; her new web site states that she has a new album (the first in 12 years) 'Keep The Faith' due for release in the next 6 months. 'Keep The Faith' has also seen Toni Childs re-team with the producers (David Tickle and David Rickells) that created 'Union'. So buy 'Union' from Amazon to see where this amazing artist all began (well, after she provided some back-up vocals on David + David's 1986 album 'Boomtown')... and get ready for her soon to be released new album.

Venice was a good place to be in the 17th century if you liked to hang out in church--not that you had much choice in those days. Gabrieli's reputation rests on his "polychoral" compositions: works for several choirs, a choir being any size group of voices or instruments. For example, a sacred composition for three choirs might have two brass groups and one chorus, or two choruses and one brass ensemble. The idea was to keep things flexible to allow for changing local conditions. The result, in any case, was a magnificent "question and answer" style of writing, in which great blocks of harmony challenged each other from opposite sides of San Marco Cathedral. If this sort of thing intrigues you, then you owe it to yourself to hear this terrific collection. It's a cosmic experience. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Antiphonal Masterpiece.......2007-05-16

This recording unifies arguably the 3 best brass sections from American Brass orchestras in a performance of the antiphonal music of Giovanni Gabrieli. The Chicago, Philadelphia, and Cleveland brass sections are used here and they work together as groups as well as they ever did with their corresponding orchestras. This was recorded without conductor, rehearsal, or even a tuning note, however, this is irrelevant when looking at the result. Given performers of the caliber of Adolph "Bud" Herseth, Arnold Jacobs, and Gilbert Johnson it is little wonder that this fine quality could be achieved with minimum preparation. I have looked at a number of other examples of this music including recordings by the Empire Brass and the Canadian Brass (and friends) and neither comes close to the emotion and beauty of this performance.

The different groups played directed off the vocal and instrumental parts written by Gabrieli making any adjustment for transposition in their head on sight, thus allowing them all to be as much focused on the music as possible as they were not looking at 3rd generation arrangements which always tend to leave out markings. These possibly were the best brass performers in America at the time and their interpretations are unified through exceptional listening across the ensemble for intonation, style, and tempo. A slightly non-justifiable reason that I hold for this album's excellence is the raw energy and beauty of this unprepared collaboration. In the time of Gabrieli, rehearsals were rare, and musicians would, on a daily basis, sit down and perform music that they hadn't studied, and while these are not the original instruments for which Gabrieli wrote, the quick pacing of this production (one weekend) to me lends more on the positive side for the enjoyment of the listener.

In short, this is a remarkable collaboration of some of the best performers on fantastic Renaissance literature and worthy of owning merely for that fact, and when combined with live and engaging performances where the music is played expertly from one section to the next off of each individual, this album becomes a gem for anyone with an interest in the brass ensemble sound.

5 out of 5 stars All-star brass.......2007-01-17

If you like antiphonal music or even just music, it doesn't get any better! With the best brass players in the world playing Gabrieli, you couldn't want more musically!

3 out of 5 stars Instant playing.......2006-07-11

I very like the diversity of instruments used in this recording, and it is shure something special to have all the first brass of so many US orchestras together. But they play on first sight, without preparation, and this results in lack of precision, it is just not the right kind of music to do "ad-hoc". They would do very well with Jazz, but not with Gabrieli. Nevertheless the performance is by far better then the one of Empire Brass. Overall I would recommend the complete Gabrieli Works on Naxos played by London Brass. They lack diversity of instruments because they play on Trumpets and Trombones only, but there is the precision adn musicality.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY special album.......2005-08-03

If you've been into brass for 40 years, you probably already know that this is a very unusual gathering of the top of the top!
My only complaint is with the web site sound samples being MONO !
This album is in STEREO and really portrays the placement of the 3 major antiphonal quintets! You won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars I think Gabrieli would like this album.......2005-04-28

The purists have a good point - this recording is not historically accurate. In Gabrieli's time most written music was for sacred events. I'm sure the church officials would have objected to the volume level and intensity of this recording. Composers in the Renaissance and Baroque periods were pretty much slaves to their employers. I think that if Gabrieli had present day instruments and full performance control he would have performed his works differently.
If you love quality brass music read the five star reviews and buy this album!

After a nearly four-year absence from recording, Toni Braxton returns with The Heat, her third album. Full of drama--sometimes melodrama--it unsurprisingly puts Braxton's rich voice and command of nuance front and center of one state-of-the-art track after another. Unfortunately, The Heat plays up her taste for ballads to such a point that the disc bores itself into a quiet-storm rut. The big exception is the Rodney Jerkins-produced first single, "He Wasn't Man Enough." The song's smoldering rebuff and Jerkins's measured funk make a perfect match for Braxton's matter-of-fact hauteur. She also delivers a tough take on reality with "Just Be a Man About It," which pits her against Dr. Dre in a breakup scenario that carries much more force than weightless trifles such as the filler sex-me-up "The Art of Love" and Diane Warren's "Spanish Guitar." --Bob Roget

4 out of 5 stars Toni's Changed Her Style, But Still Good.......2007-03-16

After Toni's bankruptcy trial, she came back with The Heat a great album but if you're looking for another Secrets then you'll be disappointed. The album's opener "He Wasn't Man Enough" was a banger and all women could relate to this track and Toni was looking sexy in the video, the title track was good and ballads "Spanish Guitar", and "Fairy Tale" are good listens but the best one was without a doubt "Speaking in Tongues" and it should've been released as a single. This album was pretty solid but the last two track should've been left off. But Toni fans won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2006-12-04

I was reluctant to bring this out of the vaults, because I remember how everybody said this album was terrible. I guess I took their opinion as mine and just forgot about this album. But when I finally started listening, I was pleasantly surprised. No, this is not another Secrets or even her debut album, but it is still very good. She manages to keep her old style while still incorporating new ideas. There are a few minor missteps, and "The Art of Love" should have just been left off completely, but the rest is quality. It makes me sad that she went from this to More Than A Woman...

4 out of 5 stars The voice speaks for itself. . . ........2006-09-06

Like a great many Black female R&B vocalists these days, Toni Braxton can't seem to keep enough of her clothes on (see Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson). Braxton is now approaching 40 and it's almost as if she--like Carey and Jackson--doesn't trust her voice or music enough to stand on its own without that tired marketing gimmick of skin-baring (one of the sexiest photos of her was the back cover of her debut album, a stunning shot of her tastefully dressed in a simple yet elegant black mini-dress, her hair stylishly cropped) . Fortunately, "The Heat" proves that Braxton can still sizzle if given the right material. To be sure, the CD has more than its share of filler material, but when Braxton is on, she's great! For me, the highlights included the title track, the feisty uptempo "He wasn't man enough," the Babyface-inspired "Fairytale," "Just be a Man About It" (in which she offers an indignant call-and-response to a wayward Dr. Dre) and the tongue-twisting "Maybe." I also loved the pulsating groove of "The Art of Love," a song that is about as steamy and sexy as an instrumental can get. I hope Braxton is around for the long haul, but someone should tell her (maybe her husband?) that there is nothing more sexy than the imagination--something you can't literally see. She should leave the striptease act to non-singers like Britney Spears. Braxton's voice is more than enough to satisfy. . . .

1 out of 5 stars BAD.......2006-03-24

SHE ISN'T A GOOD VOCALIST, THIS CD IS A WASTE OF MONEY, BUY INTO SOMEONE GOOD. I'D RATHER BUY COUNTRY WESTERN MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars The heat that grows on you.......2005-10-27

"The Heat" is Toni's best album, with more mid-tempo songs than her last one, it's my favorite album. There's people who thinks that Hip-Hop doesn't go with her, but everyone has the freedom of taste new sounds, and this was her case.
This 3rd album was Toni's transition into a Gangsta R&B, saddly many fans and Toni herself said that it isn't her style... Anyway, if I liked it that's my business, don't you think so?
The lead single "He Wasn't Man Enough" (produced by Rodney Jerkins) was a hit; saddly the other singles only had moderate success. "Gimme some" and "Speaking in tongues" deserved to be commercially released.

5 out of 5 stars Before their time and gone too soon..........2007-06-22

TTT is one of the most influential groups of the 80's R&B/New Jack/Soul era. As i mentioned i beleive them to be before their time...it's sad how some groups aren't appreciated until we don't have them anymore. In the mid to latter 80's "New Jack" was the King and a group u may have heard of..."Guy" was the leader of the pack but there was another group that may not have gotten the attention they deserved...Tony!Toni!Tone! was that group! They had it all...great vocals, great tracks/beats, and a lot personity on the records. Their version of "It Never Rains(In Southern California)" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love how it makes me long for the beach, my flojos and a good Long Island Ice Tea...! I love that song!!! They first hit the scene with a mildly popualr semi-hit "Little Walter"...but we all knew that there was more to come from these guys. "Let's Get Down"( with DJ Quick) still gets played every weekend and "Feels Good" is the kind of song that you can't sit down to with it's Killer hard beat and piano rhythum THIS IS A CUT!!! These guys were also big time pioneers of the smooth, quiet strom ballad with grinders like " What Ever You Want" and a song that's sadly not included here " Just Me and You" ( featured in the movie "Boyz In The Hood"). "Anniversary" is a cut that i will always play at Anniversary Parties and Weddings..."If i had not Loot" and "The Blues" got play in the club back in the day. These guys were before Jodeci and Joe, Tyrese, Robin Thicke, JT and the like of Remy Shand and Kem...i have to believe that TTT had a lot of influence on all the smooth brothers of today. Pioneers...before there time...If you don't have a TTT CD in your collection...do yourself a favor and open up to some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Songs-I Miss these Guys.......2007-03-22

I really enjoyed the songs chosen on the CD. I really miss this group in the music business. There are not any bands like them out there right now.
I wish they would come back together again.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect...........2006-11-04

All the cuts here are great, and really help capture the sound of their era: Late 80's/early 90's "new jack swing" sound that was all the rage at the time. But the disc is missing a couple of tracks that no true fan should be without: "Born Not To Know" was the follow-up to their debut single, "Little Walter." And while it wasn't a big hit, neither were a few other cuts on this collection. A more essential jam is "House Party (I Don't Know What You Come To Do)" from the House Party 2 soundtrack. It's easily one of the group's best party anthems, right up there with their crossover smash "Feels Good."

OK, those may be minor quibbles with an otherwise terrific collection. Like PM Dawn, the Tony's were ahead of their time, and too-often ignored by the public-at-large. But HITS is a fine (though incomplete) retrospective.

5 out of 5 stars thank you.......2006-08-14

the cd is off the hook. I have always been a fan, and when i ordered this cd it brought back all those good memories.

5 out of 5 stars How Could I Forget.......2006-06-14

This album was the perfect selection for me. I was only about 10 when they TTT really hit is big, at that point I was really getting into them and then they disbanded. So to play this album bring back a lot of memories for me. Although I am the at the age when hip hop should be my life, the R&B acts of the 90's are classics to me. To re-introduce their music makes me a little bitter sweet because there is nothing after this. I am a big fan of Raphael Saadiq solo act so I still have a little joy. I am a big fan of live music and bands so just about everything that they have done I love.

So for all those who need a little rememberance from that time this is the perfect album to take you back.
