Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves to be a winner........2001-03-22

There used to be a ready market for fanciful, colourful, evocative little orchestral items such as these. You could find almost all of them available in countless versions in the 78s catalogues. Some of the items represented calling cards for Marek Weber and His Orchestra in Europe, and Arthur Fielder and the Boston Pops in the USA.

Well, here they are, marketed now as "classics" in beautifully recorded, slightly English-accented performances. Gounod's own orchestration of his piano piece "Funeral March of a Marionette" is one of the stand out items here, seeming all the more unusual for not being much heard these days. Joseph Hellmesberger's "Ball Scene", a test for the string section of the orchestra, receives virtuoso treatment here. The polka from "Schwanda the Bagpipe Player" stands out too, making one wish there had been time to include the fugue with which it is usually coupled.

Nevertheless, the results of considerable research, long selection processes, program building, two days of recording, and the preparation of excellent notes by Andrew Lamb make this another Hyperion release which deserves to be a winner. My only quibble is regarding the statement in the notes that the Alfven piece included here had wide currency in the 1950s under the name "Swedish Polka". It was the first few minutes of Alfven's "Midsummer Vigil", in a version by Percy Faith and His Orchestra, that topped the charts in the early 1950s, given the title "Swedish Rhapsody".

5 out of 5 stars A great series goes to Europe........2000-11-11

To Hyperion's credit, "European Light Music Classics" is more than Johann Strauss's greatest hits -- they've done some real researching to come up with a wide variety of composers and yet another home run in their popular "Light Music Classics" series. A great idea just keeps getting better!

As usual for the series, you get a tightly-packed CD, nearly spilling over with elegant and fun tunes -- some of which you'll undoubtedly recognize. Also as usual, premium packaging and notes. This is great for the days when the "heavy classics" need a break at your house and you're still hungry for some good but undemanding music. Perfect for dinner parties, wine and cheese get-togethers, or just some casual Sunday afternoon listening.

Try the others in the same series, all of the same high quality: British Light Music Classics 1, 2, and 3, and American Light Music Classics.

3 out of 5 stars A Spike that promises but delivers only now and then!.......2006-11-23

This 2002 Spike Jones indie release of some rather rare tracks in the Jones arsenal is one that promises alot but doesn't really deliver overall.
Harlequin is an indie company in England who makes their living obtaining copies of sometimes rare/hard to find records now in the hands of private collections and releasing them onto records/CDs....a great way to get around copyright laws in many countries.Harlequin,Proper,Flapper,ASV,et al have done very well over the years trying to fill the niche collectors market in material that the biggies won't or aren't interested in releasing. This release while produced in England was made in the Czech Republic....make of that what you will,if anything.
This is great for collectors and compleatists looking for those rare items to add to their favourites collections. But like everything else in this world caveat emptor, buyer beware. Not all indie releases are made equal as some companies take more pains to get their work done as well as they can while others are just out there to exploit a gullable public.
While this release doesn't fall into the latter category by any means it is certainly from a audio point of view rather disappointing. It's a mixed bag with some tracks sounding quite well while others sounding pretty poor.
There are two main factors involved here: 1) the person on the sound board,i.e. the expertise/committment at equalizing and remixing the sound the best he/she possibly can and 2)the source material involved,i.e.how worn/damaged are the pressings they have to work with.
And this is the crux on which buying these releases rest on.You takes your chances and settle for what you gets.
Another bone of contention I have with the release are the liner notes. For the most part they are all over the place. They are written by a member of the Spike Jones International Fan Club who(should have known BETTER) wrote them like he was releasing them to a bunch of buddies instead of a more generalized public. It's filled with alot of inane patter,in-jokes and references. While I "got" many of them this kind of liner note is NOT for general fan consumption and shows a disturbing lack of professionalism and subsequent lack of respect for the buyer.
To top this the liner notes do blurbs on just 13 of the 23 tracks on the disc!! The best thing about the booklet really are the pictures included, not much else.
In conclusion unless you are a Spike Jones compleatist who REALLY wants these performances, about five released studio recordings and the rest split between alternate takes and live recordings, then I suggest you give this a pass. The sound varies considerably on these tracks and are no where near what you would hear on official releases and should have been better than they are.And let's not get into the liner notes again....as annoying as a Popcorn Sack!!

3 out of 5 stars New To Spike? Don't Buy this until you complete "Slickers 101".......2006-07-28

If you are new to Spike and the Slickers, buy one of the "Best of Collections" first! The reason is simple: those CDs contain the polished, finely tuned performances that made us fans. This CD contains material that an old time Spike fan like me appreciates as "the other stuff Spike did".

5 out of 5 stars And now for some REAL info?.......2003-05-15

Incredible performances: just listen to the live performance of "Dance of the hours", or Tommy Dorsey trying to fit in Spike's rendering of his own sig tune "I'm getting sentimental over you" (also live)... a bunch of other gems too. BUT: again, like with the other Harlequin records, you have to know already a lot about Spike & Slickers, because their liner notes keep referring to "insiders only facts". I like the style of the notes, but the contents are lost on me... Since I actually would have liked to rate this CD SIX stars, leaving of one for the liner notes still gives me five stars. Hahaha!

5 out of 5 stars Long lost Spike Jones tracks surface!.......2003-01-25

Harlequin has been releasing hard-to-find Spike Jones items since the 1980s, beginning with the Standard Transcriptions. But this new release, Fonk, is absolutely the best of the litter! Even if you are a rabid Jones collector, you will find a goldmine of long out-of-print discs, previously unheard radio excerpts, interviews, and even several alternate performances from Spike's golden days with RCA Victor. The sound is quite good on all tracks. There is not a "lemon" among them!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect finale to an excellent band.......2000-03-13

When I came across After Glow unexpectedly in Tokyo, I bought it without hesitation. I was in for a pleasant surprise. Most of the tracks on this disc are quickly memorable, filled with trademark Neil Finn guitar flourishes, hooks, humour and harmonies that typify the band and pop into your head when you least expect it.

The most interesing feature of After Glow is that many of these rare or unreleased tracks spanning the band's musical career were recorded while still in the rough, adding a spontaneous quality representative of a CH concert. On "You Can Touch," Neil takes on drum duty, with hilarious off-beat results. Amazingly, this only adds to the enjoyment of what turns out to be another great CH song. Paul Hester's own "My Telly's Gone Bung" perfectly captures another of the band's nutty but enjoyable eccentricities that fans have come to look forward to.

Also interesting are the liner notes, which explain a bit of background about each track, including the year it was written and why the song didn't make it to a CH album.

Overall, this is an excellent disc which anyone who likes Crowded House will find an essential addition to their collection. In fact, it far surpasses Neil's solo effort ("Try Whistling This") and ranks alongside some of CH's finest albums. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Southern cross for Northern Lights........2000-02-18

Did you like me love Crowded House ? Did you spend lonesome nights in wintery Scandinavia (or elsewhere) feeling the lovelly sunshine come from your speakers as Neil Finn gave us his little life lessons and musings ? Did you like me perhaps shed a few tears when you watched the Farewell to the World concert from the steps of Sydney's Operahouse on the telly ? And have you like me, been craving just one more hit like some recovering junkie ? Then buy buy buy buy this afterglow. I recommend it with all my heart. It is after all like a Recurring Dream.

5 out of 5 stars Other bands would kill for these b-sides and unreleased gems.......2000-02-10

I've had the album for a month now, and though I listen to other things, I keep coming back to this solid, thoughtful record. Despite being a collection of b-sides and unreleased material, it holds up as a complete album with little in the way of filler. The highlights are the sensual "You Can Touch" and the romantic "I Love You Dawn", which I listen to over and over again, singing along as I drive the freeway to and from work every day. Crowded House was a special band, folks, and deserve your attention. Don't you wonder what I'm singing along to as I pass you in the fast lane?

4 out of 5 stars Left overs taste better than the original meal.......1999-12-20

I, for one, did not lament the end of Crowded House too much because I am a Neil Finn fan and there was no doubt he would go on making great music, with or without his Enz or Crowdies bandmates. "Together Alone" is their crowning glory, so it was best that they went out with that. Having said that, however, basking in the afterglow isn't too bad. I already own or have heard these songs on various singles or fanclub CDs . . . but to have them all in one place, they sound better than ever. The three TA outakes are great, as are "Recurring Dream" (version two), "I Love You Dawn," and "Anyone Can Tell." I've never cared for "Dr. Livingston," but this improved version is better . . . If anything, it just makes me more eager for Mr. Finn's second solo CD.

5 out of 5 stars The CD is called Afterglow NOT Appendix.......1999-12-18

A collection of Crowded House Rarities & B-Sides which spans over the 10 year duration of the band. Most tracks come for the turmoil ridden times before the amazing woodface CD. Tracks are studio fresh and full of melodies which will work their way into the cracks of your everyday life.
