Songbird cherry-picks tracks from the three locally released albums of Eva Cassidy, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals went virtually unheard outside her native Washington, D.C., during her short 33 years with us. Lost to melanoma in 1996, Cassidy sang with an unaffected purity and an astonishing ability to make both classic and contemporary songs sound like they were written just for her. Sting's "Fields of Gold" finally lives up to its title through the alchemy of Cassidy's transcendent rendition, while other tracks on this anthology showcase her ease in the realms of pop (Christine McVie's "Songbird"), soul ("People Get Ready"), gospel ("Wade on the Water"), and traditional standards ("Autumn Leaves" and "Over the Rainbow"). Framed by understated jazz and pop arrangements, Cassidy's clear, soulful voice and exquisite phrasing make her that rarest of vocalists whose interpretations are a complement to any song. A fine introduction to a true talent. --Billy GrenierAlbum Description
Songbird is a posthumous anthology culled from the album Live At Blues Alley and her other solo release, Eva By Heart, along with one track from her 1992 duet album with Chuck Brown titled The Other Side. Blix label.Customer Reviews:
A pure delight.......2007-07-10
Before dying of cancer in 1996 at the age of 33, she left behind a plethora of recordings, enabling her family and friends to release "new material" every so often. Relegated to obscurity outside of the Washington DC area that she jammed in, she was "discovered" five years later by an English radio station DJ who was mesmerized by her very beautiful take on Judy Garland's classic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Whereas most artists try to belt out the song in varied octaves (thanks to American Idol), Eva's version is quiet and melancholy, and stands the test of time.
Though Cassidy has numeorus CD's of material, Songbird will always be my favorite for its timeless collection of such varied material. Stand out tracks include "I Know You by Heart," "Songbird," the exquisite "Over the Rainbow," a gorgeous and lush rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold" (which is much better than his), and my personal favorite, "Autumn Leaves" an old standard that somehow seems fresh.
Cassidy had a way of evoking so much emotion in her simple songs and soulful arrangements and would have been a joy to see live. Sadly we all miss out.

This fourth effort from the soft-rock-masquerading-as-country band Rascal Flatts moved more than 721,000 copies its first week out, which let the female-friendly trio rub elbows with some mighty heady company. Only four other country artists (Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks, and Tim McGraw) have rolled out numbers like that, and only 24 other acts total (including Eminem, 50 Cent, U2, and Coldplay). So what's the hook, besides Gary LeVox's wounded tenor and Joe Don Rooney's boy-band face? Clearly, it's the songs. Or it usually is. On Me and My Gang, "What Hurts the Most" is the one that'll end up on a tape loop in your head, though "Yes, I Do" memorably frames romantic yearning and regret with ersatz reggae rhythms, and the sexy "Cool Thing" does a slow burn. The problem? New producer Dann ("King of Excess") Huff bloats too many tunes with screaming, by-the-book guitars and general bombast. And despite his über success with Faith Hill and Keith Urban, Huff has never really understood what makes country, well... country. Instead, he insultingly works in a snippet of steel guitar and a couple of family lyrics--e.g., the melodramatic "Ellsworth" is meant to pull the heartstrings of anyone who's seen the cruelty of Alzheimer's--and thinks he's thrown Nashville a bone. Worse, "Backwards" boringly reworks that hoary ol' country joke "What do you get when you play a country song backwards?," the title song is a Big & Rich ripoff, and even God gets dragged in for a half-baked attempt at middle-America resonance ("He Ain't the Leavin' Kind"). C'mon now. Call these boys pop and be done with the pandering. Joe Don's famously photographed derrière got a fairer crack than this. --Alanna NashAlbum Description

The fifth-season American Idol finalist has a Nashville record deal, and his talents have traction. Bucky Covington's gravel-rough, expressive voice is sufficiently flexible to handle a wide spectrum of material. His flair for a light touch comes through on the Mark Nesler/Marty Dodson tune "I'm Good" and the pleasant "A Different World." Regrettably, he often has a tough row to hoe, since in the case of material and arrangements, producer Mark Miller (of Sawyer Brown fame) has simply thrown him onto Music Row's insidious studio assembly line. Covington gamely pours his heart into a sheaf of predictable songs, from the sentimental bathos of "I'll Walk" to "The Bible and the Belt" and "Back When We Were Gods," the types of generic heartland tunes sung so often by so many in the past decade that they no longer feel fresh or compelling. Musically, Miller wraps Covington in a sterile, studio version of Travis Tritt-style southern rock that robs him of any sort of distinctive style. American Idol is a difficult road, even for the Carrie Underwoods who ultimately come out on top. One who got as close as Covington did, with his potential, deserves better. --Rich KienzleAlbum Description
Bucky Covington was a finalist in the 5th season of American Idol, where he went on to win the heartsof the American public, finishing 8th on the show. Originally from Rockingham, North Carolina, Bucky's long journey to national attention began where he and his identical twin Rocky were born. Drawn early to country music, Covington was a fan of Tim McGraw, George Strait, and Travis Tritt, among others. After getting his first guitar at age 19, he claimed local fame with the country/southern rock cover band Southern Thunder. He says his style of music is "country, with as much rock in it as I can get away with."Customer Reviews:

On Street Love, Lloyd packs in the urban-tough reputation he was going for on 2004's Southside and becomes, unmistakably, a sweetie. His heart beats for two on "Valentine." He whispers candy-coated nothings on the title track. And by the time we're nine songs in, the man has sunk, love-scorched, to his knees. Which turns out to be a pretty great position for him to make a record from, actually. Lloyd's shift to the soft side on this well-executed sophomore set will cause the inevitable comparisons to the reigning king of all R&B love-song crooners, Usher. But it shouldn't. Mr. Polite, as the well-acquainted call him, is a different sort of singer entirely: sub out the realistic, realtionshippy lyrics for something sensational, and he could be Michael Jackson. That he chooses to hang his songs on relatable scenes (like "Killing Me," at the club) gives us a glimmer of what a street-loving, lady-killing Michael might have sounded like. And then the disc adds a little more: the soul-leaning joint "Hazel" hints at stylistic leaps to come, and "I Want You (remix)," with Andre 3000 and Nas, is as satisfying a kicker as we've seen in 2007. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

Somewhat remarkably, the youthful trio Rascal Flatts has an uncanny ability to sound 20-something going on 13. They are often dismissed as just another slick, contrived "boy band," though that hasn't kept them from chart-topping success. Admittedly, these Rascals do sound slick and even generic on run-of-the-mill teem anthems like "Fast Cars and Freedom" and "The Day Before You." Yet, on a few shining tracks like "Bless the Broken Road," "When the Sand Runs Out," and a lovely hidden cut called "Skin," the chic threesome also betrays poise, maturity, and thoughtfulness amid its chart-conscious predictability. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:
Dreadful and soulless tripe.......2007-07-03
Having said that, I do not like this band, Rascal Flatts, and bands like them one bit. I think that they are third rate mediocrities, whose success is a result of their packaging as much as anything else. Their songs have all the profundity of a Hallmark card, or perhaps a Chinese fortune cookie, and are sung in an incredibly irritating, whiny American Idol/Radio Disney style. In short, there is nothing here of merit. I urge the fans of this group to do a bit of research, and check out some real country.

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers--artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Description

Minus all the machinery that the music industry can put behind an artist, Eva Cassidy sang bewitchingly in Washington, D.C. and then died without fanfare in 1996, when she was a mere 33 years old. And then the world began hearing Cassidy, thanks largely to Songbird, a posthumous collection of locally released album tracks that went on to garner media attention, critical praise, and commercial success. This collection gathers both live and studio cuts delivered within warm, mostly acoustic settings; often it is simply Cassidy, her voice, and her guitar. Inside are some of Cassidy's best-executed covers, beginning with Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" and ending with a stellar rendition of the traditional gospel "Way Beyond the Blue." In between are heart-wringing versions of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." What distinguishes Cassidy so completely is her offhand ability to transform songs beyond their initial character with a voice that brilliantly mixes an airy floating quality and an edge that you know can pop open to reveal a belt-it-out strength to rival the best in the singer's trade. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Description
The 2000 release Time After Time is a collection of 12 previously unreleased Eva Cassidy performances, primarily studio recordings, Time After Time also includes four live tracks. This album continues the tradition set by previous Eva Cassidy releases, a mix of traditional favorites such as 'I Wandered by a Brookside' and more contemporary songs like the title track, a remake of the 1984 Cyndi Lauper hit. Addendum.......2007-01-13
That aside, with no disrespect to reviewer Timothy J. Mccoy, this review was meant to make an addendum to his review: Only if you purchase this album straight from an independent record store would you be supporting said stores. Amazon is not an independent record store, and Live at Easy Street was released on J Records, owned and operated by Sony BMG. Nothing independent about that.
Also as a side note, if you are a bootleg collector, PJ performed 16 songs at this show, so if you are a completist you may want to find the complete show via audience recording.

The Pearl Jam songs are of course wonderful but I love the covers. These guys are my age so when they pull out covers of rockin' songs from my youth (Clash, Who, Split Enz, etc.) I get excited. Versions gathers 18 Thievery Corporation remixes from across a music spectrum that only the most eclectic could love. The vinyl-popping digital duo embraces '60s psychedelia with the Doors and '60s kitsch with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. They put them all into the mixmaster, usually adding the downtempo jazzy electro-lounge beats upon which they built their early reputation. Alpert's "Lemon Tree," taken from the recent Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, is a vintage noirish mood piece, but this doesn't always work. Fear of Pop's "In Love" becomes a tedious vamp, and the Doors' "Strange Days" is a missed opportunity squandered on a Cagian "indeterminacy" moment, like two bands in different rooms. But the Thievery formula usually works wonders on even the most unlikely material. There's an Indian twang to many of these mixes, including the Middle East-via-Bombay grooves of Trans-Global Underground, the Indian singing of Ustad Sultan Khan, and the fragile sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Even the tunes that aren't Eastern, like Nouvelle Vague's Euro-lounge "This Is Not a Love Song," get the full Indian treatment with droning tambouras and tabla percussion. I wonder what it says that no matter whether they're using Astrud Gilberto, Sarah McLachlan, or the Doors as source material, it all comes out sounding like Thievery Corporation. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Songs from the Street, the boxed set that stretches back to "Sesame Street's" 1969 debut, is the kids' record of the year, if not the decade: Big Bird and the gang might've pulled it off themselves--for a crew of fix-it store workers, shopkeeps, and goofball monsters, the talent quotient's off the charts--but when you've got this many names to drop, they've got to land somewhere. What impresses most in three discs is the lack of a single thud. Cab Calloway, Pete Seeger, and James Taylor mosey in on disc one; Johnny Cash, BB King, and Tony Bennett take seats on the stoop for disc two; and the Dixie Chicks, Gloria Estefan, and R.E.M. raise the brownstone roof on disc three--and that's leaving out stars like Lena Horne, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Trisha Yearwood. When it comes to inspiring preschoolers and their parents to sing the praises of rubber duckies, bein' green, and the people in their neighborhood; "The Street" gets busy. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
I'd rather just the first 10 years, thanks.......2007-05-26
Nowhere is it stated whether those compilations used the original versions or re-recordings, so who knows? Even the TITLE theme is not the original (It might be the version they use nowadays, but it's not the version most people know from the 70s).
Sesame should have just used the original TV versions of all tracks as that's what collectors of vintage material would be looking for (and paying quite a lot for).
They also should have focused more on the early years when the show was the most innovative. And as music was a major element, I'm sure there's a lot more material that could have been used, particularly those odd demonstrational songs about the number 5 or the letter R. Instead they've focused on the celebrity guests, most of whom don't really add much value.
I personally hoped there'd be that funky counting to ten song that featured on almost every episode (not the Pinball one, which I love too).
Disappointing, but until a better option comes along, this will have to do.
