It would be wrong to pigeonhole Derek Trucks as a southern rocker despite his ongoing day gig as the Allman Brothers Band's second guitarist. On his fourth solo album (actually recorded before his third, 2002's Joyful Noise) the young slinger shows what he's made of, and it's not barbeque and bourbon. Instead Trucks caters more to the martini crowd, giving a sophisticated cast to his slide guitar, snaking it into elegant musical conversations with a rather frivolous flute, and some off time drumming that are reminiscent of the clean jazz fusion that Traffic used to conjure up. On the opening track, "Soul Serenade"/"Rasta Man Chant," Trucks inserts some of the languid licks and flirts with Miles Davis before devolving into Bob Marley. "Bock to Bock" is a more structured affair that recalls Henry Mancini. Gregg Allman sits in on "Drown in My Own Tears" and spits out the bitter words in his grizzled voice while Truck follows along in a perfect slow dance, punctuating each of the singer's phrases with his own mournful slide. Trucks ventures south of the border in "Afro Romp" and the band evokes the great jazz drummer Elvin Jones on "Elvin." --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Truckin'.......2007-02-02

Soul Serenade (Columbia) by the Derek Trucks Band is one of the best albums I have heard this year(2003). It won't matter how this album is classified, either, because it has it all. For those who liked Allman Brothers guitarist Trucks on his eponymous band's major-label debut, 2002's Joyful Noise, will find this CD to be even more impressive. Soul Serenade was actually recorded three years ago, before Joyful Noise, but is being released only now. It's been worth the wait because the Derek Trucks Band is hitting on all cylinders from start to finish.

The album begins with covers from two musical music legends-King Curtis and Bob Marley. Trucks uses "Soul Serenade" by Curtis and "Rasta Man Chant" by Marley to deliver one of the more exhilarating musical moments of the year. Trucks' guitar-sling and the fine work of his band show that the difference between the rock-steady beat of Jamaican reggae and Afro-American soul is so slight that it hardly matters. The next track, "Bock to Bock," is even better. Bassist Todd Smallie and drummer Yonrico Scott set the table for the band to deliver a powerful yet subtle swinging blues number. Trucks is on the case with his ax, and his band stays tight and focused at all times, letting the guitarist roam where he needs. The magic of this album doesn't end there although the first two songs will leave you awestruck.

The Derek Trucks Band then pumps the soul classic "Drown in My Own Tears," with Gregg Allman providing a heavy, blues-drenched vocal, which is followed by a tricky version of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue." By this point you will have no doubt about the importance of Derek Trucks and his band. They defy category. They challenge those preconceived conclusions that often muzzle music, and they will leave you wondering why this album had been held up for so long.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Synthesis?.......2006-06-22

I read most of the reviews and the words 'jam band' crop up way too often. And to try to pigeon hole this stuff as jazz/fusion/southern rock doesn't do it justice. "Derek should use his fingers to play". Believe me, he uses his fingers! He's obviously 'cut the umbilical' to Warren and the ABB. He stays with them because he loves it. I believe he can play/sit in with anybody. To say it's 'courageous' is not quite accurate either, since the ABB has fooled around with Soul Serenade quite a bit; not to mention some jazz licks, etc. Words that come to mind when I listen to this album: range, eclectic, inventive, stretching, synthesis, experimental. I listen to it and imagine this may be very similar to what Duane would have done. My only concern is that Derek throws in licks from Mountain Jam a little too often. The ensemble is tight and this CD has a laid back feel. A righteous effort. A definite 'buy' rating.

4 out of 5 stars continued growth by a prodigy.......2006-02-27

Derek Trucks continues to blur the lines between jazz, blues, and world music. His slide playing, always among the best around gives several standards a new twist and the bands playing is first rate.

The record starts with a sweet taste of King Curtis' Soul Serenade seguing into Rasta Man Chant. Bock to Bock slides into cool jazz and afro Blue is a trip to the heart of Coltrane country. the two are sandwiched around an outstanding take on Ray Charles' Drown in My Own Tears featuring Gregg Allman doing some of his best singing in years.

As the disc moves toward conclusion it takes some interesting turns. The band plays (pun intended) tribute to Elvin Jones in the original Elvin. A sweet turn on Wayne Shorter's Oriental Folk Song leads to the acoustic Sierra Leone which takes the band out with the same mood altering dubro turn that Duane Allman lent to Eat A Peach with Little Martha.

Definately a record for those who love good playing on good songs.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE DUANE LEFT OFF......>>>>>.......2005-09-22

The unexpected tradgedy of Duane Allman left the band with a continuation of what they were left with, and the Band did its best, which was Jam! Wth defined Soul, and Blues, the Allman Brothers Band strived for this continuance for many years. Dicky Betts, was obvioulsy a limiting factor in the Allman Bros. Band's later progression, and then came Warren Haynes, form Gov't Mule with a reinvigorated "Southern Rock 'n Roll"!

However, what Derek Trucks passionately embraces is the brilliant diversity of what Duane Allman was searching for (Remember Duane Allman An Anthology), continuing to incorporate the diversity of appreciation and foundations from which they learned, within the defined already successfull style of The Allman Brothers Band>>> Never forget how it was Duane Allman who was the creative spark, and intuitively so, Derek Trucks is running with the torch in a way that will make Duane Allman proud of how magnificent Coltrane's AFRO BLUE could sound with the smooth manifesto of a slide guitar. An hey, what's wrong with a flute intro???

This "KID", which is a joke for calling him young, for discerning his musical appreciation, as well as his bravado for attempting to record measures fromm the brilliance of John Coltrane, deserves a more acute measurement in the dimension the Derek Trucks Band is presenting here in the 21st Century.

This Band is a deserved embodiment of how the blues, jazz, and pure rock 'n 'roll can all come together. An amalgum of music is what every musician strives for in there fortitude of composition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars What A Waste of Money............2005-06-25

This album is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. There are some songs on here that had real potential and Derek Trucks butchered them with his psychotic slide playing (e. g. "Afro Blue," "Bock to Bock," "Oriental Folk Song," which are jazz standards now). He needs to learn how to play actual notes without the slide, because quite frankly I'll never buy anything by Derek Trucks again for the simple reason that his style isn't up to par with anyone that I like. Not to mention that he's not that mature of player anyway. He's a wild card. One minute he's playing something with substance, then he totally ruins it by playing slide.

In my opinion, the slide is an effect. That's the only reason I would use one, but Derek really needs to learn how to restrain himself and he also needs to play with his fingers, because that's where the actual beauty will come in. I can't relate to a glass slide at all, but I can relate to fingers touching the strings and that's something he hardly even did on this pathetic excuse for an album!

If you've never seen kids harmonizing on a street corner you didn't grow up in any major city in the 1950s. The music was pure, the lyrics understandable, and the theme was love--unrequited, lost, and found. Where classic doo-wop is concerned, the leader usually boasted the best voice, but his or her supporting cast was of equal importance when it came to vocalizing the likes of "Blue Moon," "I Wonder Why," "Barbara-Ann" and "Get a Job," performed here by the Marcels, the Regents, and Dion & the Belmonts, respectively. Also included among the 20 artists featured on this hit-laden 22-song primer are Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"), the Monotones ("Get a Job"), and the Flamingos ("I Only Have Eyes for You"). Decades after these songs filled the airwaves, they still elicit memories and a desire to sing along--in the background, of course. --Cal Greilsamer

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FANTASTIC CD !!.......2007-06-28

I'll keep this short: I'm not new to chant or choral music but there are SO MANY options out here that it's hard to know which ones are worth buying. I've got a few titles in my budding collection but I have to say that this particular recording is FANTASTIC. It is at once awe inspiring, meditative, and peaceful. Simply wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars Sacred and a treasure!.......2007-06-11

Wow! This is as good as the first Sacred Treasures if not better. These holy and divine works are truly "the speech of angels".

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2006-12-28

I've really become taken with Russian choral music as of late. I've tried to get my hands on every recording I can, and amongst them all this is one of the very best. The phrasing, tonality and selection is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars More Divine Beauty and Peace!.......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as of "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the text to a Russian "Cherubic Hymn" prescribes) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES III"...

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09

Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2007-01-27

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

5 out of 5 stars Opera in English.......2007-03-19

Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)

    4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2Stars...exciting voice and singing.......2004-12-02

Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.
