4 out of 5 stars Japanese Orchestral Favourites.......2003-10-12

This is an excellent CD, well worth its price. I was particularly drawn to Kiyoshige Koyama's Kobiki-Uta (The Woodcutter's Song) which brought back wonderful memories when the Singapore Youth Orchestra played it during its trip to the Kumamoto Festival in 1992. The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra did a stellar performance on this piece and the closing bass clarinet part contrasts well with the vibrancy and fiery of the earlier parts. Not to be missed also is Yuzo Toyama's Rhapsody for Orchestra, a combination of famous Japanese folktunes and as the opening piece in this CD rightfully sets the mood for a festive delight in Oriental music. I had a pleasant surprise at Track 3 (Nocturne by Akira Ifukube). The sad folk-song like theme, with an extended viola solo was not only haunting but also absolutely captivating. Strongly recommended for music lovers in traditional Asian music and a taste of diverse musical expressions.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the Akutagawa alone.......2003-09-24

The enjoyment I had hearing the Akutagawa piece on this CD (especially the allegro) is worth the modest price of this disc alone. Yes, this piece is reminiscent of Prokofiev, but that doesn't begin to describe how wildly fun and yes--exhilirating--it is to listen to. I just love it and wish I could hear some more of this composer's music. The rest of the music on this disc is also very enjoyable. I frankly don't understand criticisms of this music as being too Western. It is not meant to be classic Japanese music like music from the Noh dramas or folk music, but it is clearly influenced by native Japanese musical traditions. And why shouldn't Japanese composers be influenced by the likes of Prokofiev? It's not like Russia is on the other side of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Widely Varied Music from Japan.......2002-11-12

Naxos brings us six widely varied pieces by Japanese composers on this disc of Japanese Orchestral Favourites. Yuzo Toyama's Rhapsody for Orchestra is a short suite based on four Japanese folk songs, written as an encore for one of the NHK Symphony Orchestra's European Tours. As such, it is perfect--slick, commercial, and appealing. Other works on the CD are more challenging, and for me, more rewarding. Whether they truly represent Japanese orchestral favorites I can't be sure--it's difficult to imagine such a category without a work by Toru Takemitsu--but they are certainly worth hearing. Often drenched in pentatonicism, the pieces range from the ancient--an arrangement of Gagaku Music originating in the 5th century--to the modern.

The latter is well represented by Takashi Yoshimatsu's introspective Threnody to Toki for String Orchestra and Piano. The liner notes are misleading in that they describe the piano as playing "in the style of jazz"--there is no such sense in this piece. But the notes do tell us that the toki of the title is a Japanese crested ibis on the point of extinction, and that the composer sees this bird as a symbol of beauty under threat from the ever encroaching modern world. Yoshimatsu incorporates many of the extended string techniques of the avant-guard, and that he alludes to Penderecki's most notorious composition Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima in his title can be no accident. But Yoshimatsu's use of these techniques is gentler, more evocative of a quiet sadness than a heartrending cry.

More traditional than Yoshimatsu's work is Yasushi Akutagawa's Music for Symphony Orchestra. It is a two movement piece very reminiscent of Prokofiev. The variety on this disc is fantastic, from this work wholly and convincingly rooted in the traditions of Western Classical music, to Kiyoshige Koyama's piece equally rooted in the traditions of Japan. Koyama's Kobiki-Uta presents a series of variations on a wood-cutter's song. Balancing avant-guard compositional techniques with conventional ones, the work is quite intriguing.

Most fascinating of all to me is the arrangement of Gagaku, an ancient form of Japanese Court Music imported from China. Composer Hidemaro Konoye does an excellent job of imitating traditional Japanese instruments with a western orchestra in this arrangement of Etenraku. For some tastes, this work may move too slowly with too much repetition, but I'm transported by it.

All in all, this is a superb CD, well worth owning. The performances by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra directed by Ryusuke Numajiri are first rate, with impeccable intonation, excellent balance, and compelling interpretation of these works. Hats off to Naxos for this--I heartily recommend it for all.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy Western music.......2002-09-04

I bought this CD because of a firm conviction: I believe it's perfectly possible to promote a beautiful marriage between the musical cultures of Japan and Europe. Just as the gipsy spirit has been caught by Brahms and Liszt, I think an attempt to express the Japanese spirit through our instruments and musical forms could be very successful.

Alas, this CD is not about that. To my ears it sounded like some Japanese composers trying hard to write Western music, only adding a few touches of incense here and there. It gave me the same feeling I got when I tried the Big Mac with Teriyaki sauce in Japan; it doesn't taste Japanese and it doesn't taste better than the original.

For a really good exploration of the true Japanese musical soul, try some gagaku, or try some music for koto, shakuhachi, shamisen, or a combination of them. That will give you something truly original and outstanding. This CD will only give you the impression that you're listening to the soundtrack of one of those lousy Kung Fu movies.

I'm keeping mine anyway. For the price, it's worth the curiosity value.

      Kagrra is INSANE.

Just kidding, that would be Dir en grey.

But seriously. It's a cryin' shame amazon doesn't have Kagrra's (only?) full-length album Miyako. This band is one of the most unique things to come hurtling out of the Japanese indie scene since Kyo popped out and started screeching into a mic.

Their visual aspect is fabulous. Very convincing crossdress with modernized kimonos, great hair, pro makeup, and a bitchin' old-Japan concept.

Musically, Kagrra kicks butt. Otherwordly rock infused with Isshi's dreamy vocals and the occasional traditional instrument, they are definitely my second fav of Jrock. They are young and fresh and their music is like cherry blossoms in a morning mist. You float through each album on Zephyr's breath, Isshi's vocals are like vanilla, carrying you far away to a mysterious ether.

Give this band a chance, you won't be dissapointed. I'd go with Oukaranman first, and if you like it, pick up the other mini-albums like this one. if you can, scour the earth for Miyako.

5 out of 5 stars music from the Pacific Rim.......2001-08-06

A solid collection of pieces from composers hailing from both the West Coast of the U.S. and Japan, this recording documents Asian influences across a broad spectrum of twentieth-century Western music. From early works like the Cowell, Cage, and Hovhaness to more recent (well..from the 80s, anyway) pieces from Somei Satoh and Lou Harrison, this album is full of enchanting moments and brilliant colors throughout. The Cage and Satoh pieces are my favorites with their explorations of harmonic stasis and tone color, but every work on this recording is a real gem. As always, the Abel/Steinberg/Winant trio delivers a masterful and nuanced performance, reinforcing their reputations as some of our most skilled interpreters of contemporary music. Highly recommended!

      5 out of 5 stars Tsuji relaxes..........2006-10-07

More Tsuji. As if releasing a full length album in December 2005 ("Calendar Calendar") and a "Best Of" album in July of this year wasn't enough, Tsuji cranks out a mini-CD that includes one of her best songs. Take a break, already. Of course, if she continues to gush out such high quality material, then she can just disregard that advice.

Referred to as the "Relax" album on her website, this CD includes a smattering of musical styles. And relax she does. Some of the harder-edged sounds that pervaded "Calendar Calendar" have vanished. In their place smooth pop, jazz, boppy reggae, and some thick and juicy string arrangements. These six songs conjure up moods from 2003's mellower "Renrenfuka". The Tsuji of old reemerges.

The song "Fly High" probably necessitated this release. Tsuji had a minor hit earlier this year with "Sobaniirukara" (a movie theme) and her record company may have anticipated another one with "Fly High". Thus, a mini-release as opposed to a full album. They were probably on to something. "Fly High" stands comfortably amongst Tsuji's best songs. The soaring sing-along melody tenses into an enrapturing chorus length creshendo. Her ukelele strums along fervently throughout. Though the video for the song features a barefoot and prostrate Tsuji laying on the floor. She's anything but flying high. Regardless, the video matches the mood of the song. It also features plants and flowers prodigiously sprouting from every conceivable location. Hopefully "Fly High" will bring her some well deserved success in Japan.

The other five songs pale slightly to "Fly High", but they still represent high quality Tsuji. Songs two and three pick up the pace with boppy pop and bouncy reggae rhythms. Then the cryptically titled "Bathroom" escorts in piano based jazz. Tsuji has walked this terrain before, and she once again shows her mastery of the style. Track five presents another great Tsuji ballad. A sparse voice and ukelele arrangement slowly fills in with thick melancholy strings. The ending is almost devastating.

For the finale Tsuji walks into the room, tunes her ukelele, takes a breath or two, and sings "I'm Happy". The home demo feel recalls the Kyoto side of her 2004 "Cover Girl" album (sans birds). Things end as they began, with Tsuji and her ukelele. Nothing else.

Seeing that she's released three albums in less than one year, will we not hear anything from Tsuji for a while? Probably. A new release within the next six months seems fairly unlikely. But hopefully she won't relax for too long.
