5 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time.......2007-05-05

I bought this album on vinyl in the late 70s while in college. Yamashta's beautiful synths and thundering percussion meld perfectly with Winwood's crystal clear voice to create a modern fusion masterpiece. A who's who of late 70s music contributes to this masterpiece. Is it jazz? Pop? Ambient? Classical? You be the judge. Rejoice that this is now available in all it's CD glory!

4 out of 5 stars Complete Go Sessions.......2007-03-14

Although I recognise how brilliant these musicians are,I found most of it heavy going and very technical.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good .......2007-02-11

I bought the original GO and GO TOO brand new on LP many years ago unfortunate couldn't find the Live in Paris version and the GO sesions on CD till now all in one and only if it was digitally recorded I would give it 5/5 so if your into jazzrock fusion and like Aldi Meola's guitar playing as much as I do is worth buying recommended .

5 out of 5 stars Fusion Lovers Dream.......2006-08-09

I got this Cd over a recomendation of a friend of mine who told me it was very good and with that line up I was very curious about it. Al Dimeola who needs no introduction, Steve Winwood from Traffic, German Electronica pioneer Klaus Schulze (Cosmic Jokers, Tangerine Dream), Ex Santana's drummer Michael Shrieve contributes with Stomu Yamashta in this really mind blowing Space/Fusion/Jazz/Rock stravaganza that makes this CD a must. Highly recommended

3 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2006-03-06

For all of you who cannot grasp the sure sensationality of this, think again....Okay, maybe the re-production of this may not be up to speed, but you must rememeber this was done before most of you were born and without saying, one of the most brilliant recordings ever done. Then, we have a super-house of compositions into the world of some very far-reaching sonic excursions not heard since 1976. I have the vinyls, all of them, and with out doubt, this is sensational recorded history of one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken with a host of legendary composers, notwithstanding, a brilliant spread of musical tapestry not found often in the world of contempory music and Al DiMeola delivers a myriad of tasty guitar solo's that would make Jimi Hendrix roll over in his grave... So, when I tell you this should be in your CD collection, make it so, if not, then find something else better to listen to............highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Spine tingling.......2007-01-03

When you get a bunch of guitar virtuosos together, that usually adds up to a real snoozefest of lots of technical proficieny and zero tunefullness. So an all acoustic session would be even worse right? Wrong!

People can go on about the technical proficiency demonstrated by messrs. McLaughlin, Di Meola, and Delucia. But technical proficiency alone is not music. This, my friends, is music. Nominally, this is labeled as a jazz album but is really defies any genre. If you have even the slightest affinity for great guitar playing, plunk down your ten bucks and listen.

3 out of 5 stars Far Below Nothingness & Eternity .......2006-01-19

No no no!
JM's adventures in LA are misleading. Shakti's albums are amazing journeys, For the live album i pick Between Nothingness & Eternity.

Funny postcards, jammin' the pink panther's theme, but far - so far from Mahavishnu's best standards.

5 out of 5 stars Seminal acoustic guitar masterpiece.......2005-11-22

The first time I heard this recording I thought it had been sped up in the mastering process. I simply couldn't imagine three musicians playing at such breakneck tempo's, plucking strings at such amazing divisions, and all of it with seeming effortlessness. In many respects this was the end of the fusion era. Dimeola has never again played with such intensity, Mclaughlin has never been so competitive, and Paco may have outshone them all. The fact that there is no professional recording on film of this concert is an extraordinary tragedy. This is the most mind blowing acoustic guitar playing ever...until....
Strunz and Farah's "Frontera", the absolute pinnacle of guitar brilliance and speed, followed by the even more astonishing "Guitarras". The Dimeola, Mclaughlin, DeLucia trio set the bar. It was broken in 1984 by Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah and THAT bar has yet to be broken.

3 out of 5 stars Technical virtuosity yes, but where's the soul?.......2005-10-10

I hadn't listened to this album in many years, having worn out the original a ways back, but I felt compelled to comment after picking up the remixed CD. For me it's a split decision on this one. While it is whimsical and fun at times, and of course a technical tour de force, it leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. While de Lucia and Di Meola at their best are emotionally stirring, this trio seems to not have found that groove the night this was recorded. de Lucia and Di Meola work well together as a duo because they combine Al's blistering speed with Paco's more thoughtful, musical playing. Back and forth they go, Al revving it up and Paco reeling him back in. Truly magical, as in the studio versions of Mediterranean Sundance and Fantasia Suite. On this CD, as the liner notes say, this trio challenged each other to play with technical virtuosity, but the soul was lost. Good to have this album if you are an enthusiast; otherwise there's better acoustic guitar to be had.

5 out of 5 stars 10 stars.......2003-12-06

20 some years later and I still remember the first night I heard this CD for the first time, like it was yesterday. And after 20 years I still get goose-bumps every time I listen to this CD. Anyone who loves guitar has to have this CD. Now whenever I hear that somebody loves guitar I put on this CD and wait for their jaw to drop. The technical skill of any one of the three of these gentleman is amazing. But how they play together and play off each other is mind blowing! Guitar lovers prepare for 40 minutes of heaven.

Ever since he burst on the scene as a teenage member of the fusion group Return to Forever, Al Di Meola has reigned as a guitar god in jazz, flamenco, and world music circles. Those genres are well represented on this disc, with guests Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, flutist Alejandro Santos, and World Sinfonia members Gumbi Ortiz (percussion) and Mario Parmisano (keyboards). While Di Meola's lightning licks are still in effect, they are tempered by Old World, classically tinged settings with a dash of '70s-style fusion. Chick Corea's "Señor Mouse" is elegantly reworked, and "Fugata" by the Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla retains cool and complex contrapuntal lines. Di Meola plays a number of guitars on this date, from a 1958 Les Paul to an Ovation model, but it's all Al Di Meola and it's all good. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Al is playing his own style now!.......2006-02-13

With Flesh on Flesh Al Dimeola has developed his own style. Let me say a word about my approach here. Too many Amazon reviews gush all over about how great the album his, without providing context. This is written for the experienced or curious Dimeola fan, to discuss where Al has come from and where he is now.

In 1974 Al Dimeola made a big impression in the jazz-fusion world as Chick Corea's new guitarist for Return to Forever, replacing the amazing but gritty Bill Connors. With his first few solo albums in the 70's he showed good writing ability as well. But since then he has labored in the shadows of guitarists John McLaughlin and Pat Metheny, as well as his mentor Corea. In the 80's he got a bit mired in a fusion rut where speed and accuracy trumped most everything else. He tried to climb out by following Metheny's lead into Brazilian sounds, but to me it was too derivative, not quite right for Al. In the 90's he did some world music, more fusion, and more Brazilian, all excellent, but he never quite achieved a cohesive sound. The best exception to this was 1985's great, all-acoustic Cielo y Terra.

Well, I'm glad to say here that has changed. This album is a complete whole, with great playing, but more importantly, all good compositions that reflect Al's own style. Some songs are great, including the edgy intro Zona Desperata, title piece Flesh on Flesh, which runs a range of emotions as it implies, and the complex Fugata. His band supports him perfectly, not reclusive as some times past but mixed in just right. Al even has fun with Corea's Senor Mouse, funking it up a bit and curtailing the tense middle section. (Al clearly wishes he'd played with Chick for the great Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, as this is his third song from that album.) He has less need to impress here, and just wants to play his own music for us. Keep it up, Al!

3 out of 5 stars Lacking innovation.......2004-06-08

Al Dimeola is a great master of guitar. He knows how to make the guitar to cry, to chat, or to sing. Does he experiment? Yes, he does. But Flesh is probably not his best recording. It weaves anxious tunes you want to move through as soon as possible, it brings no innovation and leaves no memories. The tracks do not stick together well and the last track does not round the album on high note. Rather it hangs in vague and is cut undone.

4 out of 5 stars Mystic Tranquility.......2004-03-14

Al DiMeola's music is hard to write about. I have had this CD for more than a year now, and still have difficulty finding the proper words to describe it. It's technical, it's virtuoso, and it's extremely intellectual. There is something about DiMeola's compositions, particularly since Soaring Through A Dream, that is almost trance-inducing.
DiMeola is far more than just another fast guitarist, he is an explorer and a genre-bending virtuoso. With Flesh On Flesh, he shows once again that he is not afraid to take chances with the music of some of the greatest modern composers of other lands. Argentine master Astor Piazzolla has been a long-time favorite of his and in addition to one of AP's compositions, DiMeola offers his interpretation of a work by the renowned Brazilian Egberto Gismonti.
I had feared, as a couple of other reviewers, that the nude woman on the cover was a device to disguise schlock within much as with DiMeola's uninspired Kiss My Axe. To my delight, it was not. The CD is jammed with great music that fills the listener with a feeling of mystic tranquility.
Some reviewers complain of a similarity to other DiMeola works. Perhaps there are superficial similarities with music he has recorded in the past, but beyond that Flesh On Flesh just adds to the catalogue of DiMeola's fine accomplishments. My favorites are the dreamy Innamorata, the Piazzolla classic Fugata, and the mellow Saffire Soleil. I also enjoy the reworking of Senor Mouse, an old standard from Al's Casino album. I am least fond of the title cut, but it does not really detract from the album as a whole.
Over all, Flesh On Flesh is an excellent album that should please most current DiMeola fans as well as attract some new ones. The four stars mean that its not among his very best, but its not at all bad. Check it out!

3 out of 5 stars Come on Al.......2003-10-07

Lets get this straight, I have been listening to Al Dimeola for 25yrs plus! I purchased this Album and also "The Infinite Desire" album okay I listened to "Flesh on flesh" the opening track is familiar straight away, Well "Zona Desperata" sounds much the same as "Beyond the Mirage" on the "Infinite Desire" CD, and really the whole theme and sound of both these Cd's is a bit "samey" Its all good stuff, great Music, and personnel on each. trouble is its just the same as each other. The plinky plinky piano gets to you after a while, Al switches brilliantly from Acoustic to Electric Guitar in the same track, on most tracks, great mixing. And lots of stuff going on in each Track, you can always hear something different going on. And the whole music is flowing from one thing to another, but thats the problem it does not stop! Then you have the now obligatory "oldie" track tacked onto each album as a standard item, The infinite Desire Cd has, "Race with Devil on Turkish Highway" and now flesh on Flesh has the golden oldie, "Senor Mouse" both of which are versions revamped re- mixed or regurgitated. "Flesh on Flesh is to me the better buy but certainly do not buy both! Come on Al you can do better than this! Even Al's photo is the same on both CD back covers! A Great Musician, but we need some new stuff, But these 2 Cd's are a bit disappointing, as I feel that the buyer is being taken for a slight ride, great though the content is, if that makes sense!

5 out of 5 stars an outstanding work by outstanding musicians.......2003-05-02

This album is amazing. Full of energy and performed to perfection, this album cannot help but knock your socks off. Mario Parmisano plays the keyboards to within an inch of their life, and Alejandro Santos makes one wonder how a flute could possibly be played so precisely.

The album also includes some slower, introspective pieces, as well as an update to the classic Senor Mouse. The music itself has benefitted from a lifetime of learning since the early classics Casino and Elegant Gypsy.

Truly outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying .......2007-06-13

This is probably one of the best albums of all time. it showcases Dimeola's brilliant guitar techniques, his speed and versatility. The musicians who accompany him are monsters and can keep up with Dimeola's complex music (they're the best around).Unbelievable chemistry among those guys. The transition from track to track is so smooth, not to mention the clear recording. The opening track "flight over Rio", and "race with the devil" are mind blowing. I have been listening to this for 30 years and still enjoy it. This is a must for guitar freaks and fusion lovers.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant latin-flavored fusion jazz & accoustic flaminco.......1999-09-03

Brilliant! This was my 1st Al DiMeola disc & I've enjoyed it for over 20 years. Mediterranian Sundance (w/ Paco DeLucia) is the most amazing accoustic guitar duet I've ever heard. Flight over Rio features Al's electric guitar duelling w/ Jan Hammer's keyboard . . . and Race w/ the Devil on a Spanish Highway is as frantic as it sounds! Possibly my all time favorite jazz-fusion disc, I reccomend it highly.

This CD is a bargain for those who want a compilation of Al Di Meola. All the songs are great and essential but if you really want all of Al Di Meola's best work you need to get this along with the Al Di Meola Anthology. The Anthology has about 3 of the same songs on this CD so you don't get much doubles. This CD is highly reccomended for the great jazz-fusion guitarist.

4 out of 5 stars One of Al Dimeola's best solo albums ever! .......2004-11-11

      ______________________________________________________________
      [...]

Well what all else can be said that has not already been said about Al Dimeola? The man is hands down the greatest Guitarist to ever live and he is a 1,000 times better than Jimmi Hendrix. So the next time you hear that Hendrix is the greatest guitarist of all time, they either do not know what they are talking about or are lying to you. Speaking of which in my personal opinion people were too messed up on drugs back then and that is my theory of why Hendrix and The Grateful Dead are so overrated to name a few. Until proven otherwise Al Dimeola is the most devastating guitarist in the whole world. No one is better. NO ONE!

Now as for the cd, here we have one of the best instrumental solo albums ever released in Dimeola's musical career. This album is a masterpiece and is clearly a jem. Al's mind boggling guitar picking, finger tapping, and musical fusions are all here. Just sit back and listen to the Teacher show you a thing or two about how to play the guitar.

      1. Egyptian Danza:
This first song has a very exotic melody as per the title. Beautifully genius guitar licks and riffs that showcase Al Dimeola at his finger picking/finger licking good. Most guitarists will wish they could only play half as good as he does on this song. Like to point out how Mr. Dimeola always has a lot of depth, emotion, and soul in his songs. This song proves how this guitarist can make his guitar go through all types of various musical mood changes. And to think there was a time that people claimed he had no soul in his early playing days.

      2. Chasin' The Voodoo:
This song is really good especially the drumming, beats, loops, and synthesizers that enhance the guitar playing. The main riff is just awesome! One thing like to point out about Al Dimeola that differentiates him from the rest of the pack is that he makes albums that are not just great guitar chop records, but rather albums that are musical records. Artists should always make sure to surround themselves with other talented people to enhance the vibe of their recordings. Too many instrumentals albums have great guitars, but not enough of the other parts. In essence most solo/instrumental albums are not as good as they could of or should have been. Remember Dimeola's albums are not just great guitar chop records, they are great musical records. So expect a lot of fusions of various genres in his songs.

      3. Dark Eye Tango:
On this one the mood is slowed down to give the album a shift from a progressive fast pace from the previous songs to a smoothing, relaxing, and very romantic vibe. While this is a slower ballad type of song, it is still good, with a hooking upbeat. I.E. you will not fall asleep and you will not want to skip this song.

      4. Senor Mouse:
Here we have a song with a lot of Latin flavor. This song has a vibe along the lines of a Santana type of song with Latin dance vibes, some flamenco, and other genres as well thrown in the mix. This song is not a very fast song, but it not a slow one either and is just another example of how this man loves to take his music to the next level by mixing things up and avoiding the musical norm.

      5. Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars
      a. Viva La Danzarina
      b. Guitars of The Exotic Isle
      c. Rhapsody Italia
      d. Bravoto Fantasia
Well he we have a "Suite" themed song that is divided in to 4 parts. Part A has a beautiful intro guitar lick that resembles some of the licks that Eddie Van Halen did in the early days with the acoustic guitar. I wonder if Al Dimeola or this album influenced him in those songs. Then the song shift to some exotic classical licks reminiscent of something the locals in Hawaii would play. Next shift in the song goes to some classical old Italian guitar techniques that may seem out of place in this up-tempo song, yet still fit. The final part of the song changes back to the similar moods of the way the song began with the acoustic guitar licks that sound very up-tempo with a flamenco/bolero guitar styles that are flying all over the place. This song is just VINTAGE Dimeola.

      6. Casino:
Finally, the title cut. Al Dimeola saves the best for last. A song that has a lot of texture, progression, melody, and of course fusion which is signifies the skills of the guitarist godly talent. The vintage Dimeola-esque guitar shredding is here(DiMeola always had a knack of being able to play super fast while keeping his sound super clean) and as expected the sound is very unique. The song is very progressive with lots of notes coming at you from all directions.

Well there you go. Al Dimeola is Guitar God and will go down with the best of them. Like to point out that this cd also helped put socks in the mouths of his early critics that claimed he did not have his own signature style....did they ever take into consideration how young he was back then in reference to his musical career? Well no one these doubts Al's guitar playing and this cd set the stage for his brilliant solo career that kept evolving. My advice to you is:

4 out of 5 stars THIS ONE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR DiMEOLA FANS!.......2004-10-04

Al DiMeola is a wizard of flashing fusion electric guitar and is also a master as an acoustic player with an eagerness to explore other cultural music stylings. He broke out in the music scene when he joined the great Return To Forever in 1974 and immediately became a very influential fusion guitarist. Though with his great talent, he was criticized early in his career that he overplayed with an excess on notes and lacked true feeling in his playing.

After his short time with the short-lived Return To Forever and due to their breakup, DiMeola led his own groups, alternating between electric and acoustical guitar throughout his career.

"Casino" was his 3rd solo outing released in 1977 and showed that he was progressively maturing as a musician and playing with much improved feeling and growth since his Return For Forever days showed in all of the compositions here with distinct strength and diversity. Several tracks are ripping, straight ahead fusion/rock assaults. "Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars" displays his masterful acoustical guitar talents while his growing affection for flamenco is displayed as well.

Truely a recommended CD of his for your listening pleasure !!!
