Very, very addictive. But in a good way........2007-04-11
My wife and I recently saw Fraser and Haas perform in Olympia, WA as part of the Highland, Heath, and Holler Tour with Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and Appalachian fiddler Bruce Molsky. We bought the Fire and Grace CD at the concert. Our only problem with this recording is how addictive it is. We can't stop playing it. We play it at home. We play it in the car. We play it at work. And when we're not playing it, the 'chunes' (Alasdair's preferred pronunciation) run through our heads. This marriage of Scottish fiddle and Julliard-trained cello is exhilarating and revelatory. It's an amazing merger of Celtic and classical. We've never heard anything quite like it. Josefin's Waltz and Archibald MacDonald of Keppoch are the most achingly beautiful numbers. Sailor's Wife/Lads of Dun and Rob Roy Crosses The Minch best show how perfectly Fraser and Haas complement each other's styles. Every track on this CD is great.
Scottish Fiddle Pyrotechnics.......2007-02-13
I bought this CD expecting it to be good. I didn't expect it to be so mindblowing, though! Mr. Fraser's fiddle flies flawlessly through the tunes to the pounding, rumbling rhythm of Ms. Haas's cello. They could not have chosen a better title for their album. Whether you're a fan of fast-paced, foot-stomping music or slow, beautifully voiced music, you'll thoroughly enjoy Fire and Grace.
The opening track, "Calliope Meets Frank," starts the album off with a bang, and is one of my favourites of the CD. You'll find yourself drumming your fingers along in no time if you don't jump up and dance outright! I particularly love the second tune in this medley.
The end is just about as spectacular, with the explosive "High Reel". I find it hard to believe it's humanly possible to fiddle that fast!
In short, Fire and Grace is a top-rate album, with it's heart-pounding rhythms. You can't help turning up the volume! Definitely one of my favourite CDs in my collection.
FIre & Grace describes it all.......2006-05-02
Such a lovely and inspiring recording! Now exciting, now poignant; do yourselves a big favor by not only buying the cd but by attending one of their performances. Grasp the experience! You'll never forget it.
Fire and Grace: fantastic journey.......2005-11-12
Sheer joy. Full of surprising, incredible harmonies. Alisdair has never been better. The pairing of fiddle and cello will take you on a fantastic journey.
Buy this disc and see them Live.......2005-04-16
I stumbled on Fraser & Haas performing in a small venue in Asheville, NC in October 2004. I was stuck first by Haas' Cello playing and a short time later by Faser's even greater talent. We recently saw the two again at The Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA. Another enjoyable evening of great talent and traditional music at one of the Mid Atlantic's most incredible intimate venues.
Buy the disc but make every effort to see them together live.

Customer Reviews:
Great Things In Store For This Guitarist!.......2005-07-16
This is a very talented young man who has a great future ahead of him. It's hard to believe he's only in his twenties.
You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.
The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".
The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!
One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!
The blues lives on.......2005-03-29
In a world infatuated with hip hop, young African-American blues guitarists are a rare commodity. Rarer yet are those whose touch, tone, and vibe recall such Chicago blues greats as Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush in their youth. Meet Kirk Fletcher: Still in his '20s, he plays with the conviction and authority of a seasoned vet, yet burns with a young man's fire. Fletcher favors toothy Strat tones, stinging bends, and flurries of tight, staccato riffs that seem to pop from his fretboard like little firecrackers. His touch is supple and his fingering fluid, yet his phrases never sound slick or contrived. Fletcher and his no-B.S. band cover blues classics by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, and Magic Sam; toss in some R&B (including Percy Mayfield's "The River's Invitation" and a funky take on Booker T. & the MG's "Hip Hug Her"); and cap things off with modern offerings from the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson. Fresh, vital blues.
A real talent to watch .......2005-02-06
Every now and when someone is able to emerge from the crowd of very good blues musicians out there and demonstrate that he has something special that distinguishes himself. I think that this is exactly the case of Kirk Fletcher. This album is a real gem that shouldn't be missed by any serious blues fan. With the help of veterans like Kim Wilson, Finis Tasby and Janiva Magness sharing vocal duties and the support of a fantastic band Mr. Fletcher delivers 17 strong blues songs that deserve to be listened. His guitar work is outstanding in every track and, even though very close to the style of the great players of the past, he brings something new into the mix. Fantastic tone control and fluid phrasing are, from my point of view, his main assets that together with is innovative way in creating music progression, make his sound fairly unique and very personal. Not a bad tune to be spotted, this is the classic CD that you would listen from start to finish and when it is over, well... you will play it again!

Sentimental Favorite.......2006-11-30
My parents purchased this album back in the sixties, and I grew up listening to it. For this reason alone I love it. Even after all this time I still love these arrangements. Mr. Gould's orchestra give polished performances, the tone colors are varied and vivid. You will be carried to exotic locales by this music. It's a classic!
Jungle Fun.......2005-11-23
More soothing renditions by Morton Gould and composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Andalucia" is simply beautiful on this album. It has a strong melody that would sound good in almost any setting. My daughter brought this in for her second grade class, and most of the kids an parents liked the music. Some of it is very cinematic, and I think that's what some of them reacted too...made then think of old films. Highly recommended.
interesting change of pace.......2003-11-06
I had originally purchased this CD because I thought the music was similar to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman (I made this assumption based on the picture on the jacket). I thought it was another "exotica" album. Boy, was I wrong! While the arrangements all have lush melodies, the music is symphonic in nature and have great orchestral arrangements. I like this CD a lot.

Product Description
Guitar legend Adrian Belew will be the primary guitarist for the brand new concept CD by Man on Fire, titled Habitat. Adrian brings his signature style to this release, providing a stunning array of searing solos and unique textural soundscapes to the recordings. Adrians contributions add a whole new layer to the CD, which Man on Fire believes to be their most definitive musical statement to date. Conceptually Habitat details a variety of different lives existing within the confines of a single urban city block. Each of the tracks paints a musical portrait of one or more of the individuals living within this block, allowing for the CD as a whole to reflect many varied emotions and dynamics. In addition to the contributions from Adrian Belew, Habitat features the amazing artistry of former Kansas violinist David Ragsdale, who adds an intoxicating combination of gorgeous, melodic atmosphere and fierce technical virtuosity to the tracks on which he performs. The final mixes of Habitat were mastered by veteran mastering engineer Brad Blackwood (Evanescence).
Customer Reviews:
AMAZING!.......2005-11-21
First and foremost, BUY THIS CD! This is an amazing album that mixes elements of modern music, ambience, and progressive hard rock all into one sick mix. In this musical journey you experience the lives of 10 people on 1 city block. The music is very complex, sometimes catchy, rockin, melodic.... probably more. With Adrian Belew playing guitar and solos from an ELECTRIC VIOLIN by the guy who played for Smashing Pumpkins, your in for some real treats. If your a fan of music get this CD. Think King Crimson meets RPWL meets modern alternative.

Six Stars........2007-04-03
I have not written a review in over a year but for this my silence will be broken. Usually, it takes a couple of listens for me to decide an album is good enough to put on my short desert island list. This disc made it by the end of the first track!
The Gamelan Galak Tika engages me on every level: polyrhythmic, harmonic, emotional, cultural, intellectual, micro tonal, physical, and just plain being in awe of the composer and especially the musicians. After listening to decades of extremely challenging music i have finally found something that stretches my ears in completely unexpected directions.
The above reviewer is right, run, dont walk! Not buying this CD is not an option. You dont need any more input. Its worth full price. Just get it.
Incredible.......2004-12-09
I originally picked up this CD because I dabble in using Gamelan parts in electronic music. This recording absolutely blew away my conception of what was possible in the realm of cross-cultural composition. This music is simultaneously perfect for long drives, dancing around your house, or inspiring creative work. For those who are intimidated by modern classical composition because it's often too "difficult" (read: boring), I would strongly recommend this CD as a perfect blend of creativity, serious academic work, and enjoyability (if that's a word?).
RUN, don't WALK!.......2000-07-28
We frequently hear about the development of a "world music culture" in which elements of Western (Euro-American) and non-Western (everything that isn't 'Western') coexist peacefully Unfortunately, a good portion of the evidence we are given of this musical 'evolution' consists of either sophomoric pop-tune noodling using 'exotic' modes or instruments, or at worst complete and shameless misappropriation of the music of another culture in an attempt to gain some sort of artistic credibility. Thankfully, this recording represents the complete opposite end of the spectrum. With these two works, Evan Ziporyn sets a new standard by which all other cross-cultural musical experiments should be judged. I have never before heard such seamless integration of Western and Balinese instruments and ideas. Both _Amok!_ and _Tire Fire_ should appeal to gamelan enthusiasts, lovers of contemporary music, and rock afficionados alike. Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
A very uneven album.......2001-04-03
I normally like Tinsley Ellis' albums, but this one is the exception. It doesn't really hold together with any cohesion, and was evidently the result of (at least)two different sessions. The ones with the basic band of Bob McNeely (guitars) Scott Koziol(bass and Tad Parker (drums)[tracks 1,2,6,9 and 10] are tight and show off Ellis' guitar playing. I'd guess that this was his road band at the time; it certainly sounds like it. Producer Tom Dowd evidently wanted more tracks and variation, so the other tracks have a different band ( Duck Dunn on bass) with the augmentation of Kevin McKendree (keyboards) on some tracks.Best track from this session is Magic Sam's "Look what you done", but on the album as a whole pick are "Diggin'my own grave" and "One sunny day". If you're new to Tinsley Ellis buy another album first.

Album Description
Tone, style and a great sense of groove are what fill guitarist Tom Principato's CD "House On Fire". This is a tough guitar album with some cool Hammond B-3 underlining it's musical current. Lots of guitar edge alongside Principato's low-down vocals kicks the opener, "'Til I Get What I Came Here For", into overdrive. This is a cleanly (self-) produced record. The organ is mixed right up front with the perfect frequency of his Tele alongside of the drums and bass guitar. Principato is a cat that has chops provided by the play-every-night-of-the-week club
