5 out of 5 stars Superb import release loaded with bonus tracks........2005-07-26

In the late '90s, alternative music was collapsing on all fronts, with a smooth and overproduced variant of it starting to seize public attention, and the burgeoning Boston alternative scene pretty much completely collapsed. For her part, Juliana Hatfield had a rough go, with "Only Everything" not selling as well as the superb "Become What You Are" and the label rejecting her proposed followup, "God's Foot" (unreleased to this day). Hatfield broke with the major label and snuck and EP out (the phenomenal "Please Do Not Disturb") before releasing "Bed", again on an indepedent label.

What's perhaps most surprising about "Bed" is that it largely feels like a followup to "Only Everything". Given how different the material from "God's Foot" and "Please Do Not Disturb" was from that album (the former was well constructed and arranged, the latter loose and agressive), its a surprise that four years later she'd return to that sound. The main differences is that she's experimenting quite a bit more with vocal harmonies, and the mood is overall a bit more passive. The big problem is that, like "Only Everything", while the material is largely decent enough, very little of it actually stands out.

What does stand out is fantastic-- opener "Down on Me" in the tradition of "Only Everything"'s "What a Life" starts with a blast of feedback and churns and bubbles as Hatfield mumbles her sarcastic lyrics before breaking into one of her better solos on record. "Backseat" is among the best ballads she's written-- an extended, driving piece with a lovely chorus, it really is inspired. Ditto for the somewhat heavier "Bad Day", with the kind of catchy chorus that drills itself into your head and some great fretwork again from Hatfield. But for these, there's too many songs that while not particularly bad, just don't go anywhere ("I Want To Want You", "Live it Up", "You Are the Camera").

This Japanese release augments the album further with the entire "Please Do Not Disturb" EP-- the first recording Hatfield did after exiting Atlantic Records. While largely a bitter affair (the manic "Sellout" and guitar-and-vocal-harmony-laden "Get Off"), the EP's standout is acoustic ballad "Trying Not To Think About It", written about the death of Jeff Buckley and perhaps the best ballad Hatfield ever recorded. It also adds two other unreleased tracks, "Mean and Evil" (somewhat unessential) and the amazing "Anemia". Filled with bright guitars and fantastic vocals, it is just stunning, although its clear why it was left off the album-- bright as opposed to "Bed"'s darkness.

Even with its flaws, "Bed" is a good record. And certainly this package is among the best assemblies of her music. Highly recommended.

            5 out of 5 stars Tasty.................So Tasty.......1999-05-16

Juliana Hatfield is one of the few artists out there producing really excellent material. It seems that she's becoming a bit more jaded in her lyrics - call it ennui or anomie - whatever, it's kick &*$. Musically, she totally rocks and can credibly run the gamut from straight up songs like "Down On Me" to very interesting ones like "Mean & Evil" (coincedentally the first and last sons on this import). If you like any of her previous efforts, Bed (especially this version) is a must. Apparantly, she's got an album in the can, "God's Foot," that she's waiting to release. I've heard it is her best music to date. SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE HER THE DEAL SHE WANTS SO I CAN HEAR THIS RECORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

              5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Import Album.......2003-03-22

I ordered this album on 3/12/03 and received it on 3/21/03. I got it nest day shipping. This is the Japanese version. I have all of Juliana Hatfield's albums including the Beautiful Creature and Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure box set. I ordered this one because it had the additional two tracks "Every Breath You Take" (A Police cover also on the bonus disc of the box set) and The U.S. Mix of "When You Loved Me". Honestly, I can't tell the difference between this mix and the original song. The box set has the Mex Mix of this song and there is definitely a difference. Anyway, I am happy with this album because it has the lyric sheet included in American and Japanese and comes with a cute little slip cover for the left hand side of the jewel case. It has pictures of Juliana I have never seen before from the Beautiful Creature era. What's also cool about the box set is that it includes the bonus disc with a letter from Juliana, a screensaver and pictures. So now, I have the orginal copy of this album, the box set and this Japanese version. The disc itself was made in Taiwan! I have also found that this disc sounds better than the American version. I have heard it before that Japanese album versions sound better and it's true. Please add this disc to your Juliana Hatfield collection. If you are a true fan of hers like me, then the ... price isn't a big deal. It was well worth it!
