Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great pipes.......2007-04-05

Very well done, Amazing Grace is fantastic. All in all a fine pipes album.

2 out of 5 stars Two thumbs doon.......2006-03-21

Ach! T'were pipin' music I were wantin', not ELO does "Rebel Piper". I mean, disco bagpipes? Good lord. Yes, the cheap-hotel-lounge-rock-band backups were grim indeed; the full orchestra numbers weren't much better. In fact, the only reason I didn't give this one star was because a (very) few of the selections weren't TOO bad.

Unless you want Highland/Second-rate Hollywood fusion, then avoid this gobbler at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral - Pipes and Drums.......2006-03-21

I like it, up lifting, and exciting music. Dont like two of the tracks much with horns and band, but thats ok.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2005-04-19

The tracks that are worth listening to on this CD are done far better on their more recent CD, "Parallel Tracks." Why they bothered with arranging the Titanic theme is beyond me... Not a bad CD, but they've done better.

4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2004-09-03

This is a very nicely done cd of the Scots Guards, playing with Military band and their Ceilidh Band. There's a good mix of music on this cd from Traditional to Movie (Braveheart, Titanic, etc). This cd has great recording quality and the pipers are together throughout the cd. I only give this cd a 4 star rating due to my own preferences for pipe music (I'm not a fan of The Castle Walls, The Rebel Piper, or Soldier, Soldier period!)

5 out of 5 stars Makes a Scot proud.......2001-07-17

The cheapest 2-disc set I have ever purchased in my life. Very good quality, awesome songs. Scotland the Brave is played at least three times in some form or another. A lot of well-known favorites: Amazing Grace, Cockney Jocks, etc. I'm actually playing some songs from the discs at my wedding. Very upbeat, traditional bagpipe and drum music.

4 out of 5 stars Pipes and Drums Potporri.......2001-03-03

These two CDs are a grab-bag selection of Scottish pipe band recordings going back over the years. Most of them are civilian bands which play in the competitonal style. While I'm not a big advocate of collections like this, prefering the original recordings if possible; many of these tracks are no longer available. Others may still be out there. At least the bands are listed and the tunes they play appear to be accurate as well. This is not often done with these types of potporri collections where bands and music are often just thrown together in slip-shod fashion. The last few tracks on the 2nd CD are interesting becasue they are the massed bands, pipes and drums of the Scottish Division. These selections are no longer available commercially. Buy this collection if you are a pipe band nut and just want a lot of good pipe music by different bands.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-07-13

I bought this cd for a memorial service I hosted. It was exactly what I wanted and since then I have played the entire cd over and over.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-11

I think this set is wonderful. from my own personal point of view, there are much worse bagpipe sets out there. I know and love this type of music, but this tops all my other bagpipe CDs.
It really brings out the meaning and feel of Scottish music.
It was worth my money, and if you like this type of music, this is right for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-11

This is a truly wonderful set and should be a part of every
music collection!

1 out of 5 stars Horrendus!.......2004-04-02

This album is simply awful. I was looking for some scottish vibes but I really don't want to be listening to this terible screechy music. It is painful to my ears, and I strongly recommend that you NOT buy it. Instead, If you want something irish, try LOREENA MCKENNITT. (...).

1 out of 5 stars What junk.......2003-09-25

I just received this CD in a two box set and am so diappointed by it that I am returning it immediately. The first expectation I would have is that music today should at the very least be recorded in stereo, a format as old as I am. Read other neagtive reviews as well before buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Highland Pipes and Drums.......2007-03-09

This CD was wonderful, the music just captured you and each song had it own unique sound. My husband died in a fire and he always said he wanted bag pipe music played at this funeral. We used this CD and many people asked the name of the CD, they felt it made the funeral more meaningful. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to bagpipe music.

1 out of 5 stars Look Somewhere Else.......2003-09-26

If you're looking for Pipe music you'll be most dissappointed by the amount of "accompanied" works on this CD

2 out of 5 stars Please listen to some AMAZING music instead of this stuff..........2003-02-13

I picked this CD to write about because it's the #1 seller on Amazon for Bagpipes. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, people don't take this as what is going on in the Bagpipe & Drum world!!! This CD is ok for having many different Military Marches and that's about it!

Please listen to some of these bands to really experience the BEST of what this awesome music can bring: Shotts and Dykehead Caledonian Pipeband, Victoria Police Pipe Band, Strathclyde Police Pipe Band, 78th Frasiers, Boghall and Bathgate, and SFU.

Amazon actually sells some CD's from these bands. At least I know there is a Shotts CD.

This in not a definitive list, there are many other GREAT bands.

Lismor Recordings also has a series of the Actual Worlds best pipers and you can't get any better. Once you start listening to this stuff, you won't get anymore of these.. compellations.

3 out of 5 stars Good practice CD.......2001-03-10

If you want to practice with a good tempo and get examples of setting .. this is a good CD.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great!.......2000-02-05

I love military and police pipe bands, and for the most part, this CD delivers the real thing. One unfortunate choice of music sounded like it was performed by "Alvin and the Highland Chipmunks", and has generated a lot of amusement in my office whenever it plays.

5 out of 5 stars Scots Guards on Display.......2001-02-25

This is a very good recent recording of the pipes and drums of the 1st battalion, the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards were the first Scots unit to tour the States in 1955, and thus made a very big impression. They were the main word in piping over here before the Black Watch took over the show! The Scots Guards have toured many times since, but unfortunately it has been a while since they have done so. Thats why its good to see a new CD by the pipes and drums which have also not recorded in a while. Under Pipe Major Macdonald, the band sounds very impressive. The playing is sharpe, and the selection of tunes is very good. The medleys are well arranged and played as only a top army pipe band can do. The listener might find it interesting to compare how the band sounds today with the older sounding recordings which are available here as well. Here one can discern that the style of playing has changed over the years. The older rope tension drums have been replaced by the newer Premier drums, which produce a very sharpe and less deep tone. Purists like myself prefer the older sound, as it is more martial in nature. The modern drums are almost jazzy, and do not belong in an army pipe band in my opinion. In years past the Scots Guards use to have two battalions, thus there were two pipe bands, which when combined produced an impressive sound. Today only the 1st battalion remains. Again, the older recordings will give the listener that opportunity to hear the massed pipes of the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards also use the standard double three beat intro for the drums in this CD, instead of the longer single five beat drum roll which normally introduces the pipes in the Scots Guards and Guards regiments as a whole. Its odd that they would do this, almost as if the style of playing was intended to be civilian-like for this CD, instead of more army style playing. Still, this is a most excellent CD which the discerning pipe listener should enjoy. The CD notes on the band and current Pipe major are also good. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "That Thin Red Line Tipped with Steel".......2000-12-28

This is one of the recent recordings by the pipes and drums of the 1st battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. (Princess Louises) The Argylls have toured the USA many times over the years and therefor should not be strangers to lovers of good army pipe music. This CD, the last to my knowledge recorded under the auspices of pipe major Jim Motherwell, the Queens piper, presents a colorful collection of regimental and popular pop tunes. Some of the tunes are very demanding, and a little modern for my taste. I would prefer it if the regimental pipe bands stuck to the more traditional fare and let the civilian bands do all their competitional stuff. Still, the Argylls show that they can do it as good as the civies can! The "Drummers Salute" is an interesting amalgam of old and new Scottish drumming techniques. There is a nice selection of tunes here, played in a variety of arrangments. Some of these tunes were featured in recent tours of the USA, and have been recorded here in fuller versions, mixed with other selections. It would have been nice if the Argylls still had their regimental band, one of the famous in the British army. Some combined selections and marches would have provided some depth, and added to the sound of the pipes. But since there are no more regimental bands in the british army, the Argylls have to get on without them. A pity, the combined musical resources of the Scottish regiments is what made them so special in the past. The regimental band of the Argylls was famed for having the great Kenneth J. Alford, Britains march king, who directed the band during WW1 and wrote that famous march, "Colonel Bogey". Still, the Argylls must soldier on without their band, and the pipes and drums here amply demonstrate that they can. If you are looking for a good selection of regimental piping, played by a fine army pipe band, then this CD should do it for you. Its a little short, only 45 mins, but thats just about the right amount of time for heavy-duty pipe music! From Balaclava to Aden, from Lucknow to Korea, that thin red line tipped with steel!

5 out of 5 stars The Thin Red Line Revisited.......2000-10-27

A classic CD...rich with the traditions of one of the most esteemed regiments of the Scottish Division in the British Army! The Pipes and Drums of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders have produced a superb CD under the direction of Pipe Major Gordon Rowan and Drum Major William Jordan! It's the "Real Thing".....the real Thin Red Line!

5 out of 5 stars It's a good CD, but..........2003-11-26

...has anybody else noticed that it's categorized under the African section of world music? Since when has Scotland been a part of Africa? lol

Great CD, though. Probably one of the best piping CDs that I've found.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent studio recording........1999-07-20

Many "best of the bagpipe" audio cds today are poor recordings. This is one of the few good recordings that have made it to the popular market. I urge everyone interested in piping to buy this cd and I urge Amazon to carry other high quality bagpipe cds. I'll be glad to give you some suggestions.

      2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2003-01-02

A major disappointment for anyone hungering for the skirl of the pipes, as it's almost entirely either the regimental band, or the combined bands. Only a few selections by the pipes and drums alone. A good choice only if you like the regimental sound.

5 out of 5 stars The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.......2001-03-26

The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, are continuing in their tradition of excellence and succeed in keeping up to date with popular music and maintaining their status as a pipe band - future recordings are well worth listening to and buying.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.......2000-03-22

Lovers of Amazing Grace should know who the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are. These bands recorded that tune in 1972 when the Royal Scots Greys and 3rd Carabiniers combined to form the current regiment which is aprt of the British Army's Royal Armoured Corps. Both regiments can trace their origins back to the 1670s. In this way they combine the old with the new in their music. After their hit making 6 million selling records of "Amazing Grace" the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards went on with the business of being military band musicans and soldiers. They continued to release a number of recordings in response to demand, demonstrating their versatitilty in combining old and new, scottish with popular. In this recording we have a fine example of that. No bands are better than the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards when it comes to that unique combination of band and pipe music. We have some fine scots medleys for combined bands, as well as some interesting arrangements of more popular pieces which show the true imagination and energy which these two bands had in their heyday. In their solo medleys the pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards amply demonstrate why they continue to be one of the best British army pipe bands out there. Sadly the regimental band is no more and only the pipe band lives on today. Therefor, the listener has a great opportunity to hear some interesting music played by two excellent bands from Scotlands only cavalry regiemt, who live on today as the elite of the Royal armoured Corps. It is the cavalry spirit which lives on in this fine regiment and its excellent bands
